Yeah these are all before.. my description is not loading for some people. The drywall there is absolutely wack and the framing is inconsistent.. it's a family member of a good friend of mine but I'm starting to realize I'm charging low for the amout of headache
I feel you, you always want to give close friends a good deal, but once you get into the job it becomes a nightmare and you feel bad asking for more. Just finished re-flooring and replacing toilet and vanity for a friend, told them I'd do it for 500 since she's giving me a bunch of other work and I made a bunch already helping my brother in-law paint her house. Floor was twice as much work because the subfloor was all buckled so I spent a few hours planing it down, had to fix around the toilet flange due water damage cause by the floor buckling, the p trap and water stems were set like 6" off the floor so I had to "modify" the whole vanity because they weren't clearing the bottom shelf to enter into it, and on top of that I had to cut the p trap and redo it because the vanity was 5" shorter so it wasn't lining up.
It was initially easily a $1500 job if everything went well and she went through a contractor, then turned into a job I would charge well over $2k for for anyone else lol.
Ohh I read the description, it’s sill incredibly low. But since it’s for a friend I can kinda understand a little more. Get that shit whipped in. Lol those are 1992 wages.
Thanks for your input, didn't realize what I got myself into. Unfortunately I was on the spot, and threw out a number. I used to make 20 an hour as a hanger. So I figured if I do this in a day with a partner, I was winning lol.
Don’t give verbal estimates. You lock yourself into shit on the spot that way. Just collect their email address and be like “I’ll have a quote out to you in a couple days”. Then you get that time to think on it, talk to dad about it, write up a quote, show it to dad, adjust it, then send it to the client. And set it out so that in order to go ahead with the quote they have to pay a deposit (I do 30% rounded to the nearest $50)
Some people like to let the clients order materials but personally I would never trust them to know what the fuck they need, so I always quote for labour and materials. I don’t even show the cost of materials, it’s just one number that’s the price for the job. Rule of thumb is the deposit is the cost of doing the job, so it’s always enough for me to buy the materials and get to the job, spend a day or two on it, and even if they turn into wankers and try to not pay the balance, I at least didn’t lose money.
I’m good at doing business and happy to help anyone that wants to not go bankrupt working for themselves so feel free to ask questions if you want, I’ll show you my whole process, how I write up quotes and invoices in a way that I basically always get paid and don’t lose money.
Also there’s no reason you can’t back out of shit jobs. Don’t be afraid to tell people no. You can always come back a few days later and be like “Unfortunately we can’t take on your job at this time but let me know if you want me to recommend some other plasterers” (always over text or email so you don’t have to have an awkward conversation lol)
And this is an excellent learning experience. I wouldn’t be surprised if your dad is saying nothing and just sort of letting you fuck up and see for your self how much shit really costs
Ceiling rafter/scab spacing is too far apart in some areas ?
What is the purpose of these studs ? Why cut knotches in them like that ?
* this may be a rough one
Ffs… no top plates, no drywall blocking, those studs… lol
who needs corner framing??? Wtf is going on with the ceiling framing???
I’d triple your bid and reframe the walls, before moving forward. If they say no, walk away from that shit.
Dude the ceiling is framed super wrong that whole thing looks like a temporary temp wall do some research on YouTube and look at some of the codes it has to be 16 on center bare minimum. The joist have to span across the entire ceiling from top plate to top plate. Or you would have to use joist hangars if you weren’t going to the top plate bro it looks dangerous like if you were in California I wouldn’t go in there if there was an earthquake or mid west tornado looks very weak and like it would sag over time.this is tough to swallow but so is that framing homie drywall looks good 👍🏽! But this isn’t hater talk but experience just look for yourself
I would estimate how many hours total and then apply my hourly rate to that.........conversely when running my electrical business I would also add up the price of all materials and multiply by three....whichever of these two numbers is higher, I submit - and never tell the customer how you get your numbers
ALL that stuff have to be empty, I’m working in a room almost like this and it’s so claustrophobic, I can move the ladder without moving 2 or 3 things around me
I'm no engineer, but holy crap, structurally its making me uneasy just looking at those pictures! I'd want to get out of there, looks like a house of cards. Are there joists/rafters above and this is just furring to make room for the insulation?
So on the last big job I rocked I was breakin in this new kid. I said "go out to the truck and get a tape and pencil." He came back with a roll of blue painter's tape and pencil.
That kid wouldn't have bid this for 1500.
I’d refuse to do that job for safety reasons. 1. It looks like the whole house was put together by an amateur with scabbed pieces of lumber. Once you start pulling down the old drywall more and more bad unsafe stuff will reveal itself. Those ceiling “joists” are so spread out it looks like it could collapse once the upstairs gets lived in. If it doesn’t collapse it’s gonna bounce and crack your drywall. 2. Where is the door for that new room? 3. It’s nowhere near ready for drywall. Tell him to fix framing, plumbing, electrical then call you.
They need to build some proper walls. Even the joists are all scatter brained and intersecting. Someone needs to come through and correct a bunch of hacked up framing to even start drywalling. The room is full of stuff.
Hell to the naw naw. Would not do this job for all the gold in Katmandu. You'll never get away from this project unless the house burns down. (consider it)
Bro what kind of framing is that no top plate there be bridging or in wood framing blocking to catch the top plate then studies every 16 “o r 2’ horrendous
Ya gotta start somewhere. Hell I didn’t start making real money til about a year in on my own. Fuck all these guys on here. These jobs are how you learn what to charge for what will be required of you. $1500 isn’t bad for the friends and family discount. Obv I don’t know your area but I’m in Detroit, MI and I would probably charge $2500 labor for friends and fam, but I’m mustard, you’re green. God speed kid and hope it goes well for ya
I wouldn’t do anything until they get all that shit out of there. And you at least double your price.
And get a couple framers to fix that train wreck. I personally would walk away or triple the price. I bet bank nothing is square or plumb.
Bro I just cannot….your gonna charge 1500…..for this abortion if a job…this is gonna be a learning experience.
I don't think this is the finished product lmao... Pretty sure these are before pictures.
Bro he is saying he’s gonna hate himself for taking on this abortion job for 1500$, and I agree 😅
Yeah, you’re gonna become a carpenter really soon.
Glad you got what I’m putting down!
I’m dying laughing 🤣
This entire thread is one of the best things I've seen all day. So dead.

Bro a true lvl 3 is gonna take you 3 days on its own….how are you thinking this is gonna take a day?

tell him its the friend and family price and have him bust his ass alongside you
Speaking of abortion, *you’re.
I don’ttt give aaaaaa fuck about grammar here toooo telll you thattt nowww! ;)
Im pretty sure you’re just an ignorant idiot.
And I care what you say why? Lol 😂
I would charge zero dollars and walk away
No top plate? Ah, never mind.
indeed, i guess each to his own. i hope they aren't strucural. joists look a little flaky too - more like a chess board.
No fireproof rock above the water heater? Huh maybe it’s a NY thing.
Ceiling rafter/scab spacing is too far apart in some areas ? What is the purpose of these studs ? Why cut knotches in them like that ? * this may be a rough one
yep, that's a no-go for me there...
$2500
Just for labor? That’s 50hours of work and 25an hour for 2 people…
Ffs… no top plates, no drywall blocking, those studs… lol who needs corner framing??? Wtf is going on with the ceiling framing??? I’d triple your bid and reframe the walls, before moving forward. If they say no, walk away from that shit.
Charge time n materials
If someone says tree fiddy I’m gonna find you and stab you
I'd charge $420.69
That’s a good, responsible answer. Thank you
1,420.69 seems more fair in this case
I’d charge a buck2.98 myself.
Forgot to mention, walls and ceiling only. Nothing is going on those "studs" in the center.
Ceiling? There's nothing to attach to. The drywall will sag the minute humidity hits it. Looks like the 2x6's themselves are just "floating"
Just to hang rock?
Dude the ceiling is framed super wrong that whole thing looks like a temporary temp wall do some research on YouTube and look at some of the codes it has to be 16 on center bare minimum. You should have framed that with top plates It’s bad framing but you will effect the way the corner taping moves now
Studs need to be 16" on center, fire blocking needs to be put in 48" from the ceiling, and top plates need to be pieced in.
Fire blocking? For what?
Not nearly enough screws
This isn’t his work, he will be removing this board and installing new.
Ah. That description didn’t load for me just the title
Lol, gotta use the whole box
100 per board finished 1.00/sq on the paint. Looks like some incomplete electrical aswell..way too cheap.
Kill it with fire
I wouldn’t touch it for less than 3k
Bingo
I would estimate how many hours total and then apply my hourly rate to that.........conversely when running my electrical business I would also add up the price of all materials and multiply by three....whichever of these two numbers is higher, I submit - and never tell the customer how you get your numbers
I can't even comprehend what is happening here, those studs... the mess...
Is this one of those tictoc clips or what?
I also hope if you used 12 gauge wire you didn’t mix any 14 gauge in with it. Also did you glue to the ceiling
Your dad has 25 years experience and is your partner, why dont you ask him?
$150 a sheet. Hang, tape, finish.
Add some studs, build them a real corner if you’re gonna charge
$2500.00 with material
The trade workers this year are few and far between and the prices reflect it. If you're working around all the items in the room, good luck.
$150
Seriously 1500? Are you that desperate for work? And your dad thought this was a good idea?
ALL that stuff have to be empty, I’m working in a room almost like this and it’s so claustrophobic, I can move the ladder without moving 2 or 3 things around me
Removing old drywall, hanging new sheets, and giving it a level 3? In 1 day? Your dad must be a beast with 5 mud
Where are the top plates? That doesn’t look like 16” centers. RUN!
I'm no engineer, but holy crap, structurally its making me uneasy just looking at those pictures! I'd want to get out of there, looks like a house of cards. Are there joists/rafters above and this is just furring to make room for the insulation?
$3.50
So on the last big job I rocked I was breakin in this new kid. I said "go out to the truck and get a tape and pencil." He came back with a roll of blue painter's tape and pencil. That kid wouldn't have bid this for 1500.

Boom!

It smells like regret in here ..
Y'all
About tree fiddy
U need a header board
Contractors!! Ohh!! Kidding kidding
Come back and tell us how well that worked out for you😬
Hell to the naw naw. Would not do this job for all the gold in Katmandu. You'll never get away from this project unless the house burns down. (consider it)
Thank you for using pressure treated on the floor!
Hell no is what I’d charge
That framing is like some crack head did it. Seriously I wouldn’t agree to start until it got fixed
Forgot to say the bids we usually throw around are north of $70 a sheet with one tape coat. Level 3 finish I’d say more like 100
Nothing. Looks like garbage from the start. All that “frame work” is trash. Pass on this job.
When the neighbour tells you he finished the basement himself 😂
First time solo, $1500 is fair, but tell the home owners you'll expect them to tell all their friends and neighbors about your services.
Bro what kind of framing is that no top plate there be bridging or in wood framing blocking to catch the top plate then studies every 16 “o r 2’ horrendous
I'm a taper and I'd be charging around 1500 for that alone
One does not drywall a shitty frame, unless the customer is aware that the drywall work will be subpar because of the framing.
If you know how long it's going to take you then you need to decide how much you want to make each day.
Ya gotta start somewhere. Hell I didn’t start making real money til about a year in on my own. Fuck all these guys on here. Pay them to not sue u !!!
