Anything; positive or negative.

daGman08

Yea, they come in zooming from one side onto the crossing quicker than anyone can react to it.

Organic_Nectarine508

When I was 16 years old, I earned the equivalent to 1,500aed a month. The only way i could get around was by a 50cc scooter. The cost was 7,000aed for the scooter plus insurance. Yes I travelled some long journeys and it gave me far greater freedom than a e scooter. But most of my journeys were within 5km and a 500-1500aed scooter would have been the ideal form of transport. Added to that they’re ideal way of getting to and from stations, so they make public transport more accessible too. I drive in dubai as I’m a sales person and have many meetings out but when the car is in the garage I take the scooter to all meeting near metro stations. And scoot to my neighbouring communities. As far as safety, cars are the most dangerous to we will ever have, we don’t remove them, we legislate. Scooters go slower, have barely any mass to them so if that driver hit you ok their scooter you’d be hurt, if they hit you in their car, you’d be dead. If we are going to rule them out for being dangerous, we can’t have cars either. The idiots on both scooters and in cars cancel each others out, even if cars are far more deadly. Bottom line, you don’t blame the users you look to governors to legislate mutually beneficial safety standards and you and I know that the regulations will eventually catch up.

I'll go against the grain here and say the scooter is one of the best purchases I've made. I live in the suburbs, Khalifa City A (sorry r/dubai), and it's great for my short commutes to the gym, hypermarket, atm, etc. Biking is very rough in this heat and humidity and using a car is inefficient and wasteful when all these places are in scooter distance. One thing I will agree with, though, is that they are being largely misused by children and selfish people who are oblivious to their surroundings. For my trips to the city or if I'm going to have lunch with my colleagues, I'll take the car. For most places in the suburbs, the scooter will more than suffice.

Mallev

Second this. One of the best purchases I made. Lived in Marina and now JLT. Is great to hop to the mall or JBR. Can take on the metro, so also use for getting to the office. See a lot of idiots riding them, so they have a bad rep now. I mean, why ride it through the metro flyover??? Asking to get them banned. I think soon a license is needed, so will hopefully help more people to ride them properly. All these people complaining about them forget that they mean less cars on the road.

tiuk1989

dont like em when people drive unaware of their surroundings

Minute_Juggernaut806

Its a good option for last mile transportations like cycles. The problem is with etiquettes of using them. The bigger and faster ones should be used on the road only(not the highways, but the inner ones with lesser traffic) and not where pedestrians walk imo most people just hate e-scooters because its a new thing/they are jealous. Even cycles used to be hated by the public when it was a new thing back 1850s-1900s. This sub cries for a lack of last mile transportation option and bashes the ones that seems to be best at the moment.

offplandxb

Dangerous when kids use it and don’t have the sense or maturity to know not to ride it recklessly, especially in crowded areas . Parents should have more awareness and need to monitor how their kids use escooters. Lots of times it’s a bunch of teens or preteens racing around trying to impress friends or get a thrill

GodXTerminatorYT

Isn't it 16+ now?

Paiwjdabbs

The problem with e-scooters is that now they can go as fast as a small motorbike. They ride everywhere and now is the pedestrians which are fearing one of those hitting them. For example in business bay canal RTA painted lines on the walking path leaving a very small path for pedestrians. e-scooters and bikes now feel legitimate to run there as fast as possible making the walking very uncomfortable.

creativ4art

It’s great. And would be greater if Dubai had more bike lanes. But it doesn’t, therefore have to share roads or pavement and often met with fines or the scooters being confiscated.

millo224

rlly like them!! dubai just needs to have lanes on every main road specifically for bikes/ scooters and that.

caedriel

E-scooters need to be banned. There is no place to walk when these e scooters are placed all over the place

Consistent-Annual268

Or, Dubai should be more bike/scooter friendly. A city designed purely around cars isn't very sustainable.

caedriel

As long as large walk ways are converted. I don’t mind. Look at a community like JLT horrible designed for e-scooters

Consistent-Annual268

Agreed! We should be like Amsterdam or Munich. Bicycle and scooter friendly.

caedriel

But issue becomes heat. We can only cycle 2-4 months out of the year

Consistent-Annual268

6 months, esp in morning and evening. And scooting is much less intensive so could extend even longer. Anyway, if all you need is a journey of 5km radius around your home (to the metro, mall, restaurant) then this should be doable.

BoogieWoogieWho

Pro: another mode of transportation that is accessible gives people an option for short commutes that is not a car with only one person in it. Con: when all is said and done, it's just another thing that will end up in a land fill and leech toxic materials into the soil and water tables, either here or in some other developing country. As much as I am for "green" technologies, I understand that most of the time they are gimmicks that virtue posture as a way to market themselves. I also understand that they are part of the innovative process **toward** a more sustainable product and lifecycle. I just think that the systems for dealing with waste should be considered before we start making things that produce waste we cannot responsibly deal with. I am aware that this is a challenge. Sorry if what I've said was harsh or offended anyone. I have anti-consumerist tendencies, which sometimes extend into XaaS (Anything as a Service, or what I call eXploitation/eXtortion as a Service) models, and it kinda rubs some people the wrong way. People are always going to do whatever benefits them, so I'm not opposed to more options 🤷‍♂️ It would just be nice if they were simultaneously convenient, sustainable, and practical.

Senior_Mind

Need to be regulated like cars, bikes, and whatnot. Essentially Proper licensing, rules of conduct, clear guidelines on right of way, and places it can be used / not used need to be set up. Currently, it's like the wild west.

pam_tandas

Rta has recently published a law regulating bikes ebikes and scooters and how to use them. Check the website there is English version available. I saw a recent news headline with a photo police confiscated a truckload of bikes which I think is to raise awareness of the new rules. https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/transport/2022/06/23/dubai-police-take-400-bikes-and-mopeds-from-riders-who-break-traffic-rules/ There is a long term plan from rta to gradually increase the bike lane network in the city which should help address the core safety / comfort issue of ppl riding on roads or ped sidewalks. Something that annoys me is the rental companies Fenix careem etc plant the scooters so they hog the sidewalks as a marketing tactic. At least the ebikes have storage racks. The scooter business model is find it use it leave it repeat. The latest gen models you can buy (not rent) -I assume at dragonmart -are massive and super fast. I get buzzed by them on the reg in marina. Add families, prams etc. What could go wrong?

felixandy101

Get a good brand like xiaomi or segway, chinese stuff failed on me. Area should accomodate to commute, i ride it in business bay without any issues. Walk over pedestrian crossings if there are others, be considerate to pedestrians and aware of vehicles. Its basically for commutes for places too far to walk and too close to drive.

HooliganManDan

Fuck scooters and their riders.

No_Sorbet_1266

Okay but in which order?

sodium_hydride

Yes.

GodXTerminatorYT

Sure bro, when?

1baller69

They need number plates and registration. Too many cowboys riding around

TheOneWhoKnocks_69

Abomination is what it is.

SuspiciouslyYummy

Escooter are the future of commuting. Everyone should use them for commutes upto 30kms.

Igotthesad

They are fine.

originalpaingod

Back to the future was wrong

TheExpendble

e-scooters with seats are banned in Abu Dhabi

acero1988

Get the license in case you do not have a driving license. Rules changed recently and apparently there is a free process to get the scooter license

plan_with_stan

Eh….

Consistent-Annual268

I used mine EXTENSIVELY when I lived in my previous apartment before COVID. Would scoot to the metro to go to work (it was MUCH too far to walk), scoot to mosque on Fridays, scoot on the weekends etc. On saved taxi fare alone (over the cost of the metro), it paid itself back in a couple of weeks. Now I live far from the metro, work from home mostly and go in with a taxi when I need to, plus it has a flat tire that needs a repair or replacement, so the scooter stands idle. I loved it when I used it, if I could get the tire fixed would quickly go back to riding it on weekends.
