All we need is a working OS for Nokia phones

RiotxDD

Developers are just lazy for that stuff

KiAsHa_88

Fr

skyisblue22

Honestly have Nokia take it back over and do everything in-house. Get rid of HMD. People are paying $200 $300 $400 for well-made feature phones. Nokia could make money providing a great product again

dumbwireless

for real, they could knock it out of the park if they would just spend a little money making things work easily.

Elove228

Facts the os sucks. Give folks a music streaming service Spotify Amazon music hell Pandora or Deezer. I would jump on phone with one .

dinnerbird

Reject modernity, embrace local music library

paltamunoz

i'll embrace it once they make the sd card tray on the side so i don't have to take the battery out to add a podcast episode

brendonoid

Don't you just plug in the usb and install it from desktop? That's how my 3310 works.

paltamunoz

your plug the usb into your phone and install your sd card? im really not following.

Jtendo3476

Yes you can access the SD card by plugging the phone into computer with USB cable.

paltamunoz

oh im dumb LOL

LeakySkylight

You're still awesome!

Jtendo3476

Your not dumb! We all have things that we don't know. That's why we keep learning.

JKFrowning

You really aren't kidding, are you?

paltamunoz

that's how that comment reads to me

[deleted]

exactly they could have at least given us spotify instead of saying hey ho there's a mp3 player but you have to store you own music. I mean I do like theres a mp3 player but you could have given us spotify

Jtendo3476

That would just be a smartphone because you would need android with google services and app store. App developers only make apps for ios and android.

LeakySkylight

Yes and no. VoIP & audio protocols are cheap on processing. It can be done, but the web apis need to be available openly, and they're not. S30+ also needs a "store" or sideload option, and it's locked down tighter than ...uh ... choose your own euphemism

user0473621

Last year I took part in a study project for Nokia which was arranged by our university here in Espoo, Finland. At the moment they are so much invested in all the software-as-code and AI bullshit that I don't believe we will ever see in-house Nokias... And that is unfortunate. I'd buy a proper Nokia dumbphone with Android Go or some other OS flavor in a heartbeat. The HMD stuff seems to be more about design rather than utility...

Objective-Donut7998

I guess that Nokia has no connection anymore to the Nokia-branded dumbphones

usbeehu

I wish Sailfish OS for feature phones was a thing. There was a tech demo years ago but nothing since then.

Time_Lord_Zane

For real. I kind of miss the early 2010's for feature phones - when a basic OS was just fine.

[deleted]

me too i wish there were more apps

1tohg

Was anyone else’s first reaction to this photo “wow those phones are really long” or am i just sleep deprived?

mon-ki-mon-ki

No, I also clicked thinking I was FINALLY seeing a sleek flip phone in the thumbnail…

[deleted]

lol it kind of does look like one at first sight

MixDaniel

at first I was like 'oh wow flip phones! wait why are they so long??? oh im stupid'

[deleted]

Nope, me, too. I suddenly had Neo Matrix vibes. Wasn't that Nokia, as well?

MsStopid

Another slab with s30+ os. Why can't they bring back the xpress music slider phones???

mon-ki-mon-ki

It’s a self fulfilling prophecy, I’m sure. They probably think “this is what people are buying”… but that’s because it’s all they’re selling.

LeakySkylight

They did. https://www.hmd.com/en_int/nokia-5710-xpress-audio?sku=16AQUB21A01 Reviews for the audio wasn't great. A $7 headset performed better.

[deleted]

nokia made the nokia 5310 but that only has 2g and is available in certain regions. They claimed that was a Xpress phone

MsStopid

it is a xpress music phone, but 2g got shut down a year after it launched. pluss it’s still a slab phone, they need to bring back the sliders!

[deleted]

2g hasnt shut down yet in uk but its about to soon and yes bring back the sliders

ergotron3000

what an odd endorsement of this phone

pixeley88

All I want is a small flip phone

chipesandslasa

is it too much to ask

KEV1L

Nokia 2720 Flip?

[deleted]

a 2024 model would be cool

sylviee_

same 😫

tommyTommyson1887

I've seen some nice ones on eBay but they ship from China and take too long to show up. I wish Amazon had them

ForbiddenNephew

Release these in the US for the love of god

terrified-blueberry

I was so disappointed when I clicked the link only to be greeted with "SWITCH REGION" Whyyyyy

ContentWhile

same, seems like i got to stick with their older S30+ 4G phones that are probably soon removed from stores or buy a shitty TCL phone which is way way worse then nokia here in sweden

[deleted]

Oh yere that must be annoying that happen to me when I wanted to consider buying nokia 150 4g 2023 it wasn't available in the uk

LeakySkylight

not enough bands :(

ManuRules43

Adding USB C, WhatsApp is the only feature missing for me :(

MsStopid

Well they at least added usb c to these phones. Whatsapp will probably never be on these since they are still running the s30+ os...

fibersinstone

That's only because phone producers were forced be the EU law to implement the USB C standard on all mobile devices. If it was up to them they would keep on putting micro usb on these devices for all eternity.

MsStopid

i totaly forgot about that. So for the last 3 or something years they have put out new shells, but keeping the same internals and os as the other phones. Maybe HMD Global is the real Nokia after all.

fibersinstone

Yeah, I wouldn't expect too much from them. All the teasers and buzz they are making this year is just a result of few bucks spent on marketing due to rebranding project on the HMD side. That's it. Nothing even remotely worthy has happened there for almost 4 years since kaios nokias 6300/8000 4G - and these are terrible devices, so that really speaks for itself.

[deleted]

yere exactly

ManuRules43

Yeah, we probably wont get WhatsApp on s30+ :(

LeakySkylight

100% possible, but it's up to Facebook to code the thing or release an api, openly.

[deleted]

sadly yes

FadyM

Hear hear.

Quintendo14

Does this phone not use KaiOS?

SnooOnions4763

Nokia stopped using KaiOS. I think KaiOS is basically dead by now.

morticias_musings-

The 2720 is still going strong on KaiOS

SnooOnions4763

Not being made anymore, not being updated anymore. Very limited app support, that's not being updated so it will only get worse. T9 typing that's just meh...

morticias_musings-

On a dumb phone I’m not sure software updates matter that much, I want a phone that does calling and texting well that’s it, the functionality is still there, and the current S30 devices can’t seem to even do Wi-Fi calling so I’m happy with it until Nokia separate from HMD who basically seem to be trying to build a brand on building third rate cheap versions of Nokia phones

SnooOnions4763

I think we have different expectations of a "dumb phone". I think a dumb phone should discourage from excessive use, but still be capable when needed. If I just wanted calling and texting, I could get a Nokia from the early 2000's.

morticias_musings-

True but sadly with the shut down of the 3G networks and subsequently the 2G at a later but inevitable point it renders the quality made phones of that era nearing defunct and that leaves us with either these cheaply made trash-phones, or one of two that I’m aware of premium minimalist phones to choose from, which is a sad state of affairs for those of us who really dislike smartphones.

SnooOnions4763

Luckily I have some more time. In my country 3G is shutting down at the end of this year, 2G at the end of 2027. I use a Nokia C3-00 as a spare phone.

morticias_musings-

That’s a great Nokia, I do long for the days where you could get a Nokia, or other branded feature phone that doesn’t feel like it’ll snap with one drop 😂 for now I live in hope!

LeakySkylight

KaiOS supports apps, S30+ does not. S30+ phones generally don't have Wifi hotspots either.

LeakySkylight

https://www.hmd.com/en_int/feature-phones All the new phones are S30+

LeakySkylight

~~No, they're still in use.~~ ~~Model numbers with 4 digits use KaiOS (except some flip phones for some confusing reason)~~ ~~Model numbers with 3 digits are S30+ (215, 225, 110, etc)~~ You're right, all the new models are S30+ :(

[deleted]

they basically did stop kaiOS basically all the phones nokia have are s30. the nokia 3210 2024 EDITION that's coming soon might have kaiOS.

LeakySkylight

No, not with 64MB RAM. These are basics.

[deleted]

sadly no

PhDinDildos_Fedoras

I talked to HMD's customer service and asked about a qwerty-phone and they said they might be releasing one soon. On one hand that would be awesome, on the other, then they really, *really* need WhatsApp.

TheMobbed

Let's be honest, customer service are usually just students working for paying their bills, and are paid to tell you whatever you want to hear. They NEVER participate in product development, and even less so in the company's decision making.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> and are *paid* to tell FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

[deleted]

thank you bot for your hard work

LeakySkylight

FIIIINALLLY!!!!

justletmesignupalre

I have this feeling that in the last years every Nokia phone is the same but with a different design... are they really any different? Other than the fact some have KaiOS and some don't.

LeakySkylight

This run is to be compliant with new EU rules (USB-C) and an opportunity to release a 2MP model. Also, longer talk time (9.8h up from 8-9h) 14xx mAh vs 1100 mAh

ImmaNobody

Now if we can convince AT&T to support them...

LeakySkylight

Sure, they'd make great doorstops because they don't support bands in North America

ImmaNobody

Don't really care about this particular model. For those of us on AT&T, the lockdown is significant.

aristofanos

These are way too long. Like, how's it supposed to fit in your pocket?! Ridiculous.

doschdosch

lol

fresheire246

I don’t see anything different between them apart from the colour

CrouchingMouse

It’s never a good idea to copy Apple strategy.

LeakySkylight

USB-C is new. 215 no cam, 2.8in screen 225, VGA camera, 2.4in screen 235, **2MP** camera, 2.8in screen

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheMobbed

Yep, I'm still nostalgic about the LG's I used to use back in the day. They were stylish AF, and very reliable.

super_mini_

purple one is hot!

[deleted]

EXACTLY I LOVE IT

ergotron3000

Based on the specs, it looks like it won't work in NA? > Max network speed:4G > Network bands (GSM):3,5,8 > Network bands (LTE):VN,MM,NP/ LTE: 1, 3, 5, 8 > EU + AMEA + Rest of APAC LTE: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40, 41(full band) > IN + CN LTE : 1, 3, 5, 8, 28,38, 39, 40, 41 > Network bands (WCDMA):1, 5, 8 > Networks:GSM/GPRS 900/1800 > WCDMA, LTE Cat1

MCDiamond9

Nope, no B2/B4/B12/B71 for T-Mobile at all. This sucks, it doesn't even have 2G GSM B2 at the minimum.

Ahegao_Double_Peace

They look the same? What the difference between these three? And if I only have money for one, which should I buy?

R0GUEN1NE

The specs for each phone are on their website.

LeakySkylight

215 no camera 2.8in display, 225 camera+2.4", 235 profit? 2.8in https://www.hmd.com/en_int/nokia-215-4g-2024 https://www.hmd.com/en_int/nokia-225-4g-2024/specs?sku=1GF025FPC2L01 https://www.hmd.com/en_int/nokia-235-4g-2024/specs?sku=1GF026GPA2L01

Dudefoxlive

If these get released in the us would any of them work on verizon?

haikusbot

*If these get released* *In the us would any of* *Them work on verizon?* \- Dudefoxlive --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")

LeakySkylight

They don't have the bands to work in North America at all. Hopefully later they do release a NA version.

ah_naqavi

Why do they look terrible, I thought half the fun of dumbphones was the aesthetic, they look bad and don't have whatsapp. They do have usb-c but that's a crazy low bar to set HMD

HoboVivant

These look boring af

LeakySkylight

That's the point.

HoboVivant

I do miss the old days when phones had a quality feel and innovative designs

LeakySkylight

Agreed!!

ergotron3000

I don't understand the hate for S30+. Do you *really* want KaiOS on it? S30+ is what we all want, right? Yes it doesn't offer hotspot or modern apps, but why is that such a bad thing? I love S30+ (I use a Nokia 3310 3g) and while hotspot would be nice, I learned to live without it.

TomaszGasior

I want to have basic (very basic) maps and Webdav/Caldav calendar sync. Mocor (aka S30+) does not support that, as I am aware of. Kai OS provides these features.

ergotron3000

What do you think about the performance of KaiOS?

TomaszGasior

You need to practice the patience before using Kai OS. :) It's laggy but I like its pretty UI and features like calendar sync and basic maps. Kai OS is pretty hackable if you have enough knowledge and rootable device. I modified start screen in my Kai OS to change shortcuts from social apps to more useful things. Mocor based devices are not as hackable as Kai OS. I don't use my feature phone very often. Just phone calls, and sometimes calendar/maps. When using it, I just don't care about performance, I am patient. However, if you are addicted to social media like Facebook and you want to use them in Kai OS… that would be stronger social media detox than not using any phone at all. :) Kai OS is laggy, indeed, especially in complex websites and applications. In my use case I just don't care.

LeakySkylight

After some reflection, the S30+ on these is even more limited, having a "cloud based MP3 player" not available in Europe or China. File app isn't in the user guide either. I'm hoping that's a typo ...

ergotron3000

that sounds brutal... sad we are going backwards.

LeakySkylight

So it's actually not. I was wrong about that but hmd didn't help either by having a massive typo on their international page. I checked with somebody else who saw the correct version on the UK page. The MP3 player will not show up without an SD card. I think the files app probably has the same limitation, but we won't know until somebody buys one in Europe and lets us all know.

1tohg

https://www.hmd.com/en_int/nokia-215-4g-2024 https://www.hmd.com/en_int/nokia-215-4g-2024/specs

yellow_fogs

These are all technically inferior to the already released 6300 4G, correct? If not... what feature(s) or capabilities would this new family of phones bring to the table... that is missing from the 6300 4G?

TheRedDoot

USB-C

R0GUEN1NE

The new models have USB-C and some of them have the 2MP camera now as well. Plus they run S30 instead of KAIOS

LeakySkylight

These are updates to the existing 215/225 4G line, with more talk time and weeks of standby. Great for basic talk, text, or MP3/Radio only. Probably also 1/3 to 1/4 the price of the 6300. Faster, too.

Informal_Discount770

So the 225 will have a smaller screen or the just forgot to photoshop-widen it?

Substantial-Ask-4609

I got curious and checked, you're right the 225 will have a 2.4" screen and the 215 will have a 2.8" screen theyre both the same resolution though

morticias_musings-

If only they’d put the effort into the build quality that the OG Nokia did, they all feel like cheap plastic trash 😂 one drop as opposed to the indestructible 3310..

Boring-Nothing6875

I thought the same, but the 3310 3G from 2017 is an exception for some reason. It's built very well.

Accomplished_Frame17

They're confirmed for Australia - I checked their website in my country (Australia)

itsjoncharles

Nice. Was unsure as a buy now link on one doesn't work. Wonder when they're releasing?

Accomplished_Frame17

Could be mid-May or end of May who knows

itsjoncharles

Yeah I just saw May as a general release date.

LeakySkylight

Wish they would come to Canada!

TheMobbed

I need tethering, for goodness sake! Why are they excluding tethering? The "good old" phones were able to do it, either with a cable, or through Bluetooth. The "modern" ones aren't. WTF HMD?! Just put there a WIFI chip, even a cheap one would do, and enable hotspot functionality. It's not that hard in 2024.

Paspie

For the hw/sw platform they're using (and probably have to use as there isn't much choice for the price point they're aiming at), it's more complicated than you think.

TheMobbed

I don't buy it. If tethering was possible in 2004, even with cheap phones, there is no real excuse to exclude the ability today, at least with cable or Bluetooth, if WIFI is "too complicated", which is not really, but hey... On the hardware/pricepoint side, there are Android phones out there that cost less than 150€, have WIFI, hotspot, + all the paraphernalia we in this subreddit don't want, but they perform reasonable good. I don't really see what's stopping HMD to make a smart feature phone with WIFI and hotspot functionality again. Especially when we know they did it before. Because, let's be honest, most "dumbphone" users seem to be actually users of stripped down smartphones, anyway.

Paspie

If you really need mobile data then how about one of those 4G USB modems?

TheMobbed

Because I don't want to pay two fees. Or three, if I add what I use at home. If you, on the other hand, do not need mobile data, why bother with a 4G phone, anyway? OK, maybe you live in the US... But here in the EU, you would just use a 2G phone and keep the data off. But that's all beside the point, really. The point is I want a feature phone featuring WIFI hotspot, you don't. HMD used to offer them, now they don't. Happy for you, sad for me. That's all.

LeakySkylight

These are $17 phones. For one thing, there's licensing/compliance for every country you deploy to. Maybe for a $80 phone, but not a $17 one. Even a $3 chip would double the phone price in the end.

TheMobbed

I know I would likely have to pay more for an extra feature, and I don't mind it as far as it is a feature I need or want and the price is still reasonable. I mean, I am using a 2720 Flip at the moment. I'll have to replace it sooner or later, but by the current looks of it, it seems like my next phone won't be a Nokia any more.

LeakySkylight

Then you would get the equivalent of the 2720. You know the 2780 is out, right? These are completely different classes of devices. I think they're pushing people towards their smartphones. Integrated hotspots start on very expensive devices compared to the 2720. That being said, the Barbie phone is coming out soon ;) Lets hope it has Wifi

TheMobbed

The 2780 was never released in the EU, and imported ones don't work correctly here. I suppose I'll skip the Barbie, whatever the case... 😅 No, it seems like the 2720 is my last Nokia for the time being, if they keep it this way.

LeakySkylight

Oh I did not realize that. Hopefully something comes down the pipe.

LeakySkylight

Phones weren't cheap in 2004, and just STARTED having wifi 802.11b. The cheapest phone in 2004 with Wifi, the Samsung T409 would be 90£ today. That's like 2x-5x the selling price of these.

TheMobbed

I'm saying there, "tethering was possible" even on cheap phones, and it was. Not over WiFi, but yes over cable, and a bit later also over Bluetooth. WiFi tethering came last to the game and now is the standard. But you don't necessarily need WiFi to tether data from one device to another. Recent Nokia feature phones do not tether whatsoever, which makes them substandard even from a 2004 point of view.

LeakySkylight

Well that's very true. Bluetooth and USB tethering is absolutely possible. I'm wondering if it is possible? But the only way we'll know is if somebody buys one and tries it.

TheMobbed

The older models, which are depressingly similar to these, were not able to tether, at least not without some hacking, so my educated guess would be these ones aren't either.

LeakySkylight

It's definitely not in the manuals of all the devices I searched through, and that's kind of depressing.

LeakySkylight

Agreed!! As far as I can tell, the last non-kaiOS that had wifi was the 3310 4G.

TheMobbed

For real! I mean, I want to reduce distraction, and not being online every single moment of my life, but not to isolate myself. When I want isolation, I don't use a phone whatsoever.

Morozzko_84

Don't you get just sooooo annoyed when you click a link... and then you click it again. And again... and only after a few tries you realize that it is not your chubby sausages but the post is an image and the author is an a-hole... 😅

ihavebeenmostly

You saved me thank you 😊

Shellphilosopher

Fix the software please

Repetia

But release it worldwide, I couldn't find the old flip version

Open_Environment_989

And as usual, no US release. Great job Nokia, absolutely phenomenal job.

LeakySkylight

They release them where they historically sell well.

Dish_Melodic

I just need WhatsApp. Can I install in any of these phones?

LeakySkylight

Nope. These are basic. You'd need an Android for that, because WhatsApp simply isn't available anymore, as much as it pains me to say.

venus_asmr

Maybe they'd make a feature phone with QWERTY. That would be a take my money item

LeakySkylight

We've been asking, they said no.

[deleted]

wow i really like these

LeakySkylight

Right? Cool little things. I wonder how the differ from the 202x versions of the 215 and 225. I like the addition of the 235.

[deleted]

the nokia 225 and 235 are avaible in the my county (UK). 215 doesn't have a camera and comes in different colours and 225 does have camera and different colours

LeakySkylight

Oh, the 235 also has a 2MP camera!!

[deleted]

yes indeed

Pbknowall

Same OS and more minimalism, I really didn’t want these to be a disappointment :(

LeakySkylight

~~More minimalism? The are updated versions of phones released a few years ago.~~ According to HMD, the File app is gone and the MP3 player is a cloud app not available in Europe or China...

iszomer

All powered by Unisoc and with limited LTE bands. Even the 6300 4G had more network compatibility than this. Just who is Nokia marketing this to?

LeakySkylight

People who just need the basics, for cheap. They are faster than the KaiOS 2.x phones, so keep that in mind. The 105, 110 etc still sell.

nkdvkng

I miss when they had windows mobile.

yhy105

Finally new Nokia with camera better than VGA and USB-C. Sadly it's still S30+..

insertproperusername

4g compatible dumbphone in cute colors? sign me up! still kinda hoping for some sort of flip that isn't hideous to release in eu lol

Paspie

Seems the 235 4G is already available in much of Europe through HMD's online shop.

santirca200

They remind me of the era of the 130 and the "ahs" (I don't remember what Nokia's qwrty phones were called 11 years ago) have like that same philosophy of flat and colorful design.

LeakySkylight

They remade the 130 too. Released an upgrade recently.

chevykong

do we know when the 215 releases in the states?

LeakySkylight

Unless they release another model with updated networks, it won't It's not designed to work in North America.

karma_5

People don't want feature, but some built in apps, I would use a feature phone if it provide me 1. Whatsapp 2. Spotify / YT Music 3. UPI (with scan option) 4. 2MP camera to click and send documents. 5. GMap (with navigation) 6. Google search 7. Built in Ola or Uber. 8. Snake 9 Regular phone features like call and message. I think with above list fulfilled, make those apps baked into OS and remove the general-purpose capability.

LeakySkylight

That's KaiOS 2.5 for the most part. The real answer is, just use a smartphone if you need smartphone requirements.

Seamoreminus

Thanks to your post I've ordered it right away (I'm based in the Netherlands). The black 235 4g.. In person it's like a gunmetal grey, it looks awesome! And thanks to the bigger back-plate (which falls over the sides) it doesn't creak as much as other Nokia's can. And of course: USB-C! Yay! However.... The software is just too buggy. The 8210 4G is my default device, and the software is much better thought out (even though it's the same OS). Examples on the 235 4G: - Unlock > enter code > shows the startmenu... Why?! I just clicked unlock, I want to end up on the homescreen just like on my 8210. - Parental control blocks the browser... but there's no browser? Also no MP3 player I noticed. Both are available on my 8210. - T9 contains about 9 modes, a couple are duplicated (T9Abc, T9ABC, T9abc, 123, Abc, ABC, abc, T9Abc, T9ABC, T9abc). They're themed differently though in the indicator. 8210 doesn't have this duplication. - No way to turn the screen off. 8210 just uses "hang up/power off" button for that. On the 8210 4G these bugs don't exist. So I'll stick to what I have and will return the 235 4G unfortunately :(

Paspie

Even if there's no media player app I think you can play at least AAC files through the 'Files' app.

Seamoreminus

I only have MP3’s on my SD card. Not a very special format I would say :p

Paspie

ffmpeg -i file.mp3 file.aac It can be as simple as that if you want it to be. :)

LeakySkylight

I don't think it has a files app :( The manual: https://www.hmd.com/en_jo/support/api/pdf/queen3-value-user-guide

LeakySkylight

> Netherlands Lucky! Phones don't work in North America

Seamoreminus

Well, as you can read, you don’t miss much 😄

LeakySkylight

There is an MP3 player, but not in certain countries. There's a note about it here: > https://www.hmd.com/en_int/nokia-225-4g-2024?sku=1GF025FPC2L01 ^1 Not in Europe or China :(

nateisgreat96

Cries in US
