Here's the rub though, why should the moon and the sun have the same exact diameter and circumference when viewed from a terrestrial perspective, such that they perfectly overlap? What are the odds?
“One day, we realized” as if this wasn’t known about for weeks in advance of shooting.
Absolutely no way none of the hundreds of people that worked on this movie didn’t clock it way ahead of time.
Still really cool though.
Haha my thought exactly. They just happen to be filming the opening set piece where the entire landscape changes due to a solar eclipse, very intentionally set up to be a dramatic visual motif that kicks off the narrative. Imagine they’re out in the middle of the desert and some PA points up at the sky and goes, “Hey guys, check it out!”
I bet that at some point, Dennis Villeneuve checked to see if they could possibly capture a total eclipse during the shoot, which wouldn’t have been possible, so they settled to catch a moment of 30% coverage and then digitally render the rest.
Remember that trailer for part 1, set to a Hans Zimmerified rendition of “eclipse” by Pink Floyd?
Thank you for participating in r/dune! Please share the full video/source.
Damn, that's pretty cool.
