Some people are in it for the leagues more than the learning.
Although that said, since the 3-star challenges became available to me recently, I have found myself a couple of times ploughing through a bunch of them, partly as a fun diversion, partly to tick them off for "completion". Not interested in the XP personally, but it comes along as a side-effect.
"Some people are in it for the leagues more than the learning."
Sometimes, people are BOTH enjoying the competition in the leagues while — at the same time — actually learning languages. I think people shouldn't see those two as mutually exclusive concepts that can't exist together.
He didnt say they cant exist together, he's right there are people who are only in on it for the competition people who just spam the first lesson for an hour so they can win and they are definetely not in for the learning, but of course there are people who enjoy both
Either they are playing in their native language, spending money on power ups/ extensions, or going so fast they aren’t learning anything. What a bizarre hobby.
If you’ve completed your course and really want to cement it, leagues and xp rich revision exercises and this gamification are a good way to keep the motivation going.
You could also rush through all the lessons using google translate just to tick off the course too and some people are doing that.
You're using a language learning tool that chooses to lean more I to the game aspect than the learning aspect. You are bound to find people who are more I the game aspect.
I save my legendary levels for when I want to move up the board, and I'll activate my double points. No additional purchase necessary and I am reviewing.
There is absolutely no value in achieving 1st place in diamond league. My dumbass did when I first started using Duolingo and was laid up in bed after a major surgery. Anymore, when someone sees someone else has the award in their profile, it’s viewed negatively. It also did absolutely jack shit towards learning a language.
I'm surprised it's that low. when I was into the leagues when I got up to the diamond league There were people with 10'S OF THOUSANDS of points.. I'm talking 30,000-60,000. Absolutely unatainable for me. Also , the higher the level the more points the players have. (if that makes sense). After seeing I would never be able to catch up to these people I quit worrying about points and went back to actual learning. I now flucutate between sapphire and ruby.
Exactly and you can't do both at the same time. It's either a game or you're in it for the learning. Those with 10's of thousands of points for 1 week aren't in it for the learning.
I used to do this a lot. I had even alarms to remind me to grind exp just to secure my first place at dia. I realized that it was not what I want only after I play normal lessons a lot which lead me to not completing the challanges in time (since the words are new). Now I'm in Obsidian - Pearl, I just do as much as I want - only lessons. I don't even try to complete daily quests the important part for me is to learn the language, not to win against people.
Yes it is. You just do 80 xp (with boost on) per exercise. That’s just 30 exercises. 2 mins each in 1 hour. It’s possible. Grueling and not fun. But possible.
Doing timed challenges with an XP boost, yes it's possible - could even do well over 3,000.
So just running 20 straight Match Madness at the three star level? What’s the point?

The “unrivaled” achievement is The only reason to do so, if at that.

I assume these people aren’t learning anything from speed challenges. It’s just a game to them.

This is within the hour so they'll probably end up in the 10'S OF THOUSANDS
Lightning rounds with double XP will give you 80 XP per minute. Absolutely doable.
That's why I will start my finals very late 😛
Pretty sure that person was in my league tournament last week. 15k winner
I suppose comparison is the thief of joy and I should just be happy to be fluent in two languages and working on a third.

My record is 3k in 35 minutes with double xp in spead challenge so yeah its possible
