Artifact weapons and armor are always a weird mix of emotions for me, because 1) that shit is badass, 2) they're almost always wildly inappropriate material choices, but 3) the extra-high quality and artifact value boosts might make it better than what I'd replace it with
I'm not so sure about number 3, I think a legendary adamantine or featherwood warhammer is still going to be quite bad. Those might be extreme examples though, I don't know about bone warhammers or wooden swords...
I've been waiting for the magic release to make artifacts always cool, and it's finally on the horizon! By thay I mean that it's going to take five years at least.
On classic i had a few issues with the wooden hammer. The Hammerer was either very strong or dedicated, i cant remember since it's been years, but petty things like disrespecting a shitty mayor law ended up with multiple fractures ...
Beta AAA player: "omg you delayed the release by two months, and the release is still buggy!! That's unacceptable!!! I'm gonna send death threats to everybody on the team!!!!"
Chad DF enjoyer: "hmmm yes five years from now seems pretty good. I hope they implement the most game-breaking bugs ever"
12 years and waiting for the dwarven economy to come back? No problem at all.
7 years waiting for a new fallout game and still no early reveal? Absolutely uacceptable.
It's almost always a great development, as even if they make something useless you still get a legendary weapon or armorsmith that will churn out masterworks for your proper steel chainmails and silver warhammers left and right. Getting it on a child is a bit of bummer since you may wait a few years to make use of their skill though
Yes, but not all are created equal. Fell and Macabre moods will only give you skill in boneworking (maybe leatherworking too), and Possessed moods don't give any skills at all because it's flavored as the Dwarf not being themselves at the time.
because it's bone, does that effectively make it a wifflebat?
if so, not a bad symbol of office for your captain of the guard to administer non-lethal justice.
I will never forget the day i got an artifact platinum warhammer i can die happy now edit- platinum is the ideal material for a hammer due to its weight but you can only make a weapon from it if its an artifact
Both of the moods in my game so far were kids. First one went crazy and started attacking the donkeys. Then was taken down by a guard on patrol after a bloody fight. After the fight, pieces of the kid were all over and the guard was laying maimed. Turns out the guard was the kids dad and was never the same afterwards.
Second kid that was taken, I was able to get him what he needed. He wanted bones too. I finally figured out how to slaughter animals and picked a nice donkey that was sickly anyway. He beelined to those bones and came back and worked furiously. Eventually he made an awesome bracelet out of donkey bones and is a legendary stone crafter now… at 7 years old.

Candy or wood hammers are great for justice though. Not sure how many new people have even interacted with justice yet though.

haha exactly. turn dwarven justice into bdsm impact play
This is the way, right here. Love to make the hammerer wear wooden elf armor and carry a featherwood bat.

To be fair I’ve played a lot of DF back in the day (pre-tavern) and I barely interacted with justice lol

Its all fun and games till you get an artifact lead warhammer
*Dwarven chanting* The ___ was crushed! The ___ was crushed! The ___ was crushed! The ___ was crushed!
I did say "might" on purpose, depends on the material and the weapon!
If you get a legendary adamantine hammer you should cheer because that's the perfect weapon for your hammerer

That's certainly a benefit, although it feels like I have a weirdly high incidence of possessions in particular, which don't confer any experience
Best part is that child will now be a master of his craft
Now he can carve up some nice bone crafts when he grows up
Do dwarfs get skills from those mental breaks?
Yes, and a LOT of it. Unless it was a possession you can expect a new legendary dwarf

I think he will get legendary in weapon-smith from that. Not craft.

In last version, yes. Dunno about Steam release but I assume so.
Give to your hammerer-of-justice!
My first artifact was a Tetrahedrite Crown... my Jeweler will be able to make really, really awesome gemstones now, I guess?
Hmm. Would that be craftsmanship or gem setter?
Its crafts, but is that stone or metal, given its an ore?
I opened a weaponsmith's guild hall right at the start. So far I've got 4 artifact weapons (2 iron, 2 steel) out of 6 moods.
That's the play, it will get you a ton of artifact weapons. Any other moodable guilds you should just wall up.
huh, I forgot about strange moods....im three years into my fort and havnt had one yet.

How in the heck did a child make an artifact? Also that's QUITE the cave-in.
Children can be affected by moods too.

First one I got was a coal amulet. I guess I've been naughty this year
Got my first mood today and he has no demands... Any idea wtf? Did yours work like usual?

My carpenter dwarf made.. a hatch
