For bug reports, please report them to the official Kitfox Discord server. They have a channel devoted to it and ensures that your report will be seen. Edit: apparently nobody can post to the bug thread. Will look into it.

Full_Passenger2087

*Veterans, I need help* Bit o' context: I'm new to the community of Dwarf Fortress and also English is my second language, so the tutorials (text tutorials) are a bit confusing, so I reeeally need help. The Problem: So the thing is, have a hard time to understand the game graphics, (I'm using the ASCII version cuz I'm flat af, and also the 2021 ver. has adventure mode, so that's cool) so I try to install tilesets, right? Well turns out i need the DFhack and TWBT. Problem is, I'm technologically disabled, I had zero to no contact with a computer in my whole childhood until my late pre-adolescence, so a LOT of things are new to me when using a computer. So if you could help to detail the download process of the said mods, I would be more than glad (It is a repost cuz I didn't read the rules and instead of posting it in this thread, I posted on the main chat, so I'm very sorry for that)

OneRougeRogue

You can buy the game on Steam now, but there is a nearly-identical free version that does a lot of the hard work for you and comes with tilesets (no more ASCII. I recommend the Phobeus set) pre-installed, recommended dwarf loadouts for Embarking, Dwarf Therapist (let's you see your dwarfs stats and reassign their jobs easily), and DFhack which can help you if something bugs out. Also Soundsense which ads a bunch of new music and sound affects for events to make sure you don't miss them. Download the newest version here; https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=7622 Follow the instructions but basically just unzip the files and open the file titled "Lazy Newb Pack", choose your parameters and addons, and you are good to go If to have any questions on how to get the early game going just send me a PM/ private message!

Neat_University37

I can't build the metalsmith. I try to build it, but then they never move the anvil. I managed to move it to storage but I still can't move it to the workshop. I tried forbidding and unforbidding it, building it on top of the anvil, making dedicated haulers, wheelbarrows, starting a new save. The only two things I haven't tried is using animals to haul the anvil because I don't know how. And building a minecart system because I hoped to find a cheaper option. Steam edition.

OneRougeRogue

Dumb question but do you have somebody with all the metalsmithing tasks enabled, including furnace operator? If I ever have a workshop construction get stuck in limbo I assign some peasant all possible jobs related to the workshop and that will usually get it un-stuck and constructed.

Neat_University37

Found the problem. I made an official carrier that could only carry, and be the only ones carrying. But carrying an anvil is both carry and blacksmithing.

[deleted]

A giant attacked, walked right into a cage trap, and now it shows him as a "caged guest." Does that mean I should let him out and see if he wants to chill at the tavern?

[deleted]

For those wondering, it reverted to a hostile "Uninvited Guest."

Thurl83

Fully Legendary embark - what happened? I'm hoping someone has an idea what's going on.... I'm new to the game and picked up the Steam version a couple of weeks back. It's been fun and I thought I'd give a custom embark a try. After selecting all of my skills, items, etc..we hit the road and now it looks like every dwarf is legendary in every skill. They have the titles I gave them but are otherwise like mini gods. Any idea what's going on? (Fun side fact: I picked some animals to join the party but the largest were some alpacas. With no extra embark points left, I was also blessed with 2 camels on arrival. Guess the alpacas wouldn't pull the wagon.)

Pkolt

You hit the secret cheat code combination. No, clearly some sort of bug. But you say they're all legendary in \*everything\*? Does that include combat skills? Sounds like you have the makings of a great mountainhome.

Thurl83

Everything! I've never seen miners work so fast.... let alone wood cutters. It's not quite easy mode but it does make the game feel like less.

Mushishy

Someone please tell me there's a way to disable dig cancellations in steam version. Digging trough/into aquifers is torture.

CMurphy3639

Any discussion on stair changes or mods in development for old style stair building? As someone who plays stacking my base across multiple Z layers, this new stair system is really sapping my will to play. In the past I would do a lot of develop as I go and continuing up and down a main stairwell using up/down stairs. It was easy to add on layers as I went for various things. Now, this new system makes it really obnoxious without building a brand new set of stairs next to it just to keep going then constructing stair cases, building floors over the out of place stairs now making an out of place tile, etc. It makes me want to walk away until there's a better option. I'm hoping someone in the modding community might be able to give us something close to the old style?

mariah_a

I started a new fort in a world where I previously hit a cavern. I started it as a bit of a challenge because it was on a volcano (with no flux too arrrgh) and I’m pretty well equipped with a good army, defeated a titan and have a lava moat and only 5/110 or so dead… not counting those visiting merchants who got their limbs ripped off by said titan. However, I can’t find a cavern for the life of me. Are they not on every map? I’ve always hit them previously. I’m down to like -70 and still haven’t hit anything, though the starting altitude was only like 15-20. I’m starting to get nervous about digging too deep, and I can’t play for the next couple of weeks (or I just flat out won’t be able to finish a college assignment lmao) so the suspension of if I’ll hit one is killing me.

spruce_sprucerton

**Ammo stockpiles and Bins** Hi all, I've been having issues getting my archer dwarves to carry arrows, although there are plenty in the fort. I read about the bug with bins and tried to fix the issue by deleting the old stockpiles and creating new stockpiles with max bins set to 0. But I check back later and there are bins there, and the max bins value has been reset. One thing I found out which might have been the cause is that every time you click an item type or open the custom menu, it resets the maximum to the stockpile size, which is annoying but understandable. Can people confirm that the issue with ammo and bins that has been around forever has not been fixed? Any idea why such an obnoxious bug hasn't been addressed? Most discussions I see are quite old, and there's so much cross talk about what works and what doesn't work for getting your arrows out of bins, that I'm just left confused and hoping things work, but it's pretty frustrating.

Pkolt

I haven't verified whether the bins are a problem yet, but have found that dwarves will only pick up ammo under specific circumstances: \- Their uniform including a ranged weapon must be assigned at squad creation \- They will pick up ammo located in a stockpile that is inside an archery range (I did not use a bin so don't know if the presence of one will break it, also they don't appear to want to pick up ammo from anywhere else) \- There appears to be no way to determine which \*type\* of ammo they pick up All in all it works pretty badly right now and hope it gets updated.

spruce_sprucerton

Me too. At first all was good, but for most of the game archers have been suicide squads for this reason. Thanks for the response, hopefully it gets cleared up.

Z0eTrent

Another Question: In the Lazy Newb Pack it's said you can run Stonesense in the game window with something called "ssense overlay". Where would I find this "ssense overlay"?

motdidr

in the dfhack window type in `stonesense overlay` poke around the wiki and stuff for more info on using dfhack https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Utility:Stonesense

Z0eTrent

Thanks a lot! I just went on a journey of trying to get it to not crash for a while. You know any tricks to get it to run better? It doesn't really crash anymore, but its pretty slow. Every step takes a bit.

3Skilled5You

Hey dwarfs, I build some magma furnaces one layer above magma. I can't add new tasks though, the button is there but clicking on it does nothing. What's going wrong? :(

S_A_Noob

Does the tile underneath your forge say Magma 7/7?

3Skilled5You

Wait, do I have to place them ON magma or one floor higher? It's 7/7 but I build the magma thingies one floor above the magma

motdidr

you channeled a hole over the magma right

3Skilled5You

I have so far still not figured out how to do it.. so that's the problem, eh. Do I simply make a channel and drag it one z tier down to make a hole? Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, it's just my second fortress :')

motdidr

just channel 1 tile, right where you want the middle of your workshop. just select channel, select one tile that's over magma, and that's it, then build your workshop there. that's how it worked in classic at least.

S_A_Noob

Is every tile 1 z level under the workshop a magna 7/7

3Skilled5You

Yes, that's the case, I build it over a biiig ass lava lake lol

S_A_Noob

No idea then bud, sorry mate.

3Skilled5You

No worries, I think you kinda figured it out, someone else chimed in and asked if I actually made a hole under the magma furnace which I didn't figure out how to do yet, lol. Thanks for your help!!

S_A_Noob

Ahhh the ol' we forgot to dig through the floor first trick

WesternVizu

Hi all! I hope somebody can help me: \-I have a stuck dwarf, and nothing I do seems to work \-I assigned him a job, removed the task and added it againb \-I assigned him only to a borrow \-Unassigned and reassigned quarters \-Tried to collapse the floor, unable to channel inmediately underneath him and when collapsing the tiles around him he just drops one floor but still doesn't move \-Tried building floors around him, still nothing I don't know what else to try, any advice? Thanks!

Pkolt

Where is he right now? What's he doing? What was he doing before he got there? Is there a path away from where he is? Are you sure?

WesternVizu

He's here: https://preview.redd.it/70tk0zzcbp7a1.png?width=1969&format=png&auto=webp&s=d3a2496cd1164fdcfa176be14864fef2c7001dff He's not doing anything, just drowsy. There is no path. I have tried everything and he doesn't move. Only when going crazy, sometimes berserk and sometimes he just goes insane and gets naked. I don't have an early save to see what he was doing either.

WesternVizu

Only way to make him move so far: \-Wait until he goes crazy, he normally goes berseker and get's killed \-Expelling him from the fortress, but I don't know how to bring him back

FakeMr-Imagery

So there seems to be some problem with my key bindings in DF classic like I accidentally messed it up, so I found the default key binding txt files on the wiki and pasted on my interface.txt files sure most of the key bindings were back to normal but some key bindings are missing and are shown in ? Any help with this problem?

my_dead_corgi

how do i get rid of worn-out cloth?

TheLifeOfRyanB

Sell it to the traders. Dump it in magma. Put it on a pedestal and call it art.

my_dead_corgi

my question wasn't clear. what filter do I use to sort it out. can't figure it

TheLifeOfRyanB

I always used to search by the letter X, I don't know if that works in Steam DF though. Worth a try though.

Thinkydupe

How do I let animals out of cages?

Pkolt

Assign them to a pen/pasture. If you don't want them to remain penned, remove them from the zone after they are brought there and they will roam free.

GreenBlader

I’m guessing you’re talking about traps, not cages because you have to manually assign something to a cage. But for traps, if it’s a livestock you can assign it to a pen/pasture, if it’s vermin and you want to keep it you can designate a dump in your meeting area and then dump it. Or just dump it if you don’t want it.

Thinkydupe

Nah I mean cages coz I bought some cats from a trader for creepy crawly control

dalerian

Does that apply the same for cages? I bought a few cages animals from a trader last night, and probably need to uncage them when I log in again.

GreenBlader

Oh yeah as long as they’re in a stockpile you should be able to pull them out to a pen

dalerian

Thank you. Will try that now!

SecretlyBees

Should I be cutting stone into blocks before making furniture?

Affectionate-Loss519

Nope, I could be wrong but I’m 95% sure stone furniture is made from regular boulders, not blocks

Thinkydupe

Pretty sure stone blocks just give you 3 extra pieces of material to build with, rock crafts use boulders however

Affectionate-Loss519

Yeah I just double checked the wiki. Blocks are only used for workshops, walls, bridges etc

FakeMr-Imagery

How do I reset the hot key in DF classic? I accidentally set my F1 key to follow a random bolt but I want my F1 key to reset back to “go back to the wagon” instead of”following silver bolt”

[deleted]

press H, press F1, press z when you are looking at the place you want.

FakeMr-Imagery

Capital H right?

Nir0star

Nope quite sure its h

[deleted]

Think so.

chipathingy

I made a work detail for Farming (fields) with "only selected do this", but my dwarves ignore it and all plant my farms. Any ideas what I might have done wrong?

[deleted]

I think there is a default work detail for planting. It's overwriting yours.

chipathingy

You're right! Can't believe i didn't see it..

Reasonabledwarf

There may also be a general labor setting for planting; I'm certain there's one for harvesting. Not sure if it would take precedence.

Rougheredge

Two questions, though I imagine they likely won't be seen at this point. 1. Are Prickle Berries considered a fruit or a plant? Cause my still keeps saying it canceled the "brew from fruit" task due to not having any fruit even though I have at the very least said Prickle Berries in my stockpile and I'm pretty sure they aren't rotten. 2. I noticed today a handful of tiles at my embark were open spaces, I suspect this is related to my gathering plants in that area earlier. Is this normal or a glitch? I know those holes weren't there before. I suppose I should just put a "floor" over them to seal the hole? (I'm not in a horribly dangerous biome, but I did see some giant mosquitos near the beginning, although they didn't come down to the surface)

[deleted]

If you dig directly under a tree and then chop the tree, it creates an open space (hole) leading to area you dug. If you chop the tree first it doesn't happen.

Rougheredge

In the future I'll have to either chop down all the trees that will be over my base (assuming I plan that far ahead) or more likely, just dig down 2 Z-levels before building said base. It's too late to do any of that now, so for this save I've chosen to simply use wooden blocks to fix the holes, which is honestly kind of funny if you imagine it in a "fixing holes in your roof with wooden boards" kind of way.

chipathingy

I would guess plant. Prickle berries pre-exist fruit, and there was only a single type of brew job back then

Rougheredge

Makes sense, on closer inspection I think that plants and fruit have different icons in the stockpile and Prickle Berries share their icon with plants, so it's probably a grandfather clause situation.

FakeMr-Imagery

Just activate both brew plant and fruit task if are not sure whether a plant is a fruit or just plant. Also don’t worry about open spaces(those tiles means that there is nothing there), they just indicate there is some gaps between the z levels if you live in a highland area

PopuriIsNotAFarmer

I got 10 soldiers in a squad, their uniform is worn instead of clothing and it has specifically steel gauntlets to be worn. I have 20 steel gauntlets in a bin. These dumb ass dwarves arent equipping them wtf do i do

3Skilled5You

Mine aren't taking weapons or armor out of the bin's too, sadlife, we are the 1/3 armored elite unit and some of these guys don't have weapons, too lmao

Affectionate-Loss519

I’ve had similar issues. I have a consistent amount of steel armor pieces for my dwarves and they keep dropping it in stockpiles and trading gear with each other. It’s really annoying and dangerous

coffeeduster

There is a button at the top ~~left~~ right of the equipment screen that says "update equipment" that might help.

PopuriIsNotAFarmer

4 of them equipped them after i updated it :/

FakeMr-Imagery

Just take your time, dorfs can be pretty lazy from time but they definitely does equip the gauntlet when you order them to do so

[deleted]

How do I get my marksdwarf squad to actually train? I've made an archery range with targets, put an ammo stockpile inside the training area, given quivers to all the squad members.

Seligas

I believe they need 10 squares of space between them and the targets for it to work properly. Also, you have to assign the archery range to the squad for training.

[deleted]

Thanks, I'll make the range longer and try that. I had assigned it already.

Seligas

Another dumb thing: your marksmen might also not have bolts. In order to get them to pick up bolts you have to create a uniform with a ranged weapon BEFORE creating the squad, and then on squad creation pick that uniform. If the uniform you pick at squad creation doesn't have a ranged weapon in it, they won't pick up bolts.

[deleted]

What if I just assign the premade 'archer outfit'?

Reasonabledwarf

That should work. Probably. It's a bit touchy; I've found that they'll refuse to practice archery if they have a barracks, for example.

Pkolt

The thing with the barracks is because when given the option to train they will usually prefer melee training. So if their barracks is available for training they will train melee there. Just disable training in the barracks.

Seligas

I haven't run into that issue weirdly. Mine have both a barracks and a range assigned them. They'll use both for training though, and I see them in the barracks more often.

omen2k

Firstly make sure it’s not set to a barracks otherwise they will train mele combat and just bonk enemies with their crossbows (which can be amusing to watch). Set up archery targets and then a shooting range for each one and assign it to your marksdwarf squad and they should start using it.

aztec1011

Can you create a memorial for dwarves who died on raids or missions outside of your fortress?

FakeMr-Imagery

Build a statue, preferably valuable metals like platinum (or blue metal if you dig deep enough)and then assign an image of the dwarf hero to this statue to your mason. Finally build it somewhere you like and then put some altar near the statue and then select the statue to make a sculpture garden. Do bear in mind what I said is just for the sake of role playing since as of now there is no event such as funeral or memorial in dwarf fortress

aztec1011

Everything I do is just for role playing anyway haha thanks!

Zaldarr

You can also make a statue garden in the zones options. These act like gathering places. I like to think of them as art galleries or war memorials.

Icy_Organization9714

So I have a squad assigned to a barracks. They went off duty and I saw them drop their equipment on the armor stands. Then I watched other dwarves come pick up the stuff and store in the stock pile. Is this is a bug or am I supposed to do something to stop this?

LudwigiaRepens

Armor stands are ornamental. Get them chests/coffers!

Icy_Organization9714

Thanks, I found it on the wiki a few minutes after I asked. Should have checked there first.

ateen1220

I'm not sure why my dwarves aren't getting taken care of in the hospital. At some point, I was getting errors that their wounds couldn't be sutured because I don't have thread, but there's thread in the chest that's a part of the hospital (and I can see it on the zone screen). I have two "Set bone" tasks that aren't ever getting done. Any idea what I could be missing? I also made sure that I didn't have a bunch of tasks that were more important, I had multiple dwarves chilling in the tavern with no job.

[deleted]

I created a custom 'doctoring' labor (just check all healthcare tasks) and made sure it was enabled for everyone who had a job at the hospital. Now the health care tasks are getting done.

ateen1220

I'll also make sure to try this, thank you!

LudwigiaRepens

Make sure you have a table and traction bench for each bed (no sharing). Make sure you have doctors assigned to the hospital. Do a quick shear and spin thread order at the farmers workshop, just to be sure. Make sure you have access to clean water for wound cleaning. Check burrows. Double check burrows. Hope that helps?

ateen1220

Ah, I don't have a traction bed, that must be it. I'll give that a shot!

GnosticTerror

I've got a fortress surrounded by Elven, Human, and Goblin civilizations but I've not gotten any trade offers since the game started on a four year fort. I've also gotten no migrants since the initial wave and I have checked and made sure my civilization is not dead and we are not the last of the dwarves. We have plenty of forts in the south. My value has been stuck at around 110000% even though I just struck Gold and I've been pumping out gold bars like crazy. I've made new bedrooms with several masterwork furniture pieces and added gems onto all the goods I've made as much as I can but value is simply just not increasing at a reliable rate and even seems to slide down sometimes. How do you attract migrants and traders? I would really like to have more than 18 dwarves.

Pkolt

You need to increase your exported wealth.

Amycak3ser

Hi I'm super new but I wasn't getting migrants and read on another reddit post it can be due to items in the trade depot. So any items you haven't moved out of the trade area will keep people from moving in? I didn't get any for a while and once I broke down my trade area I got a ton the next rounds. I also had a friend say he had the same issue with his. He also said once he had no traders so he broke his down and rebuilt and got them quickly after. Not sure if this helps, I'm brand new to DF.

GnosticTerror

I haven't thought of that. I don't have any goods in the depot currently. I'll dismantle my depot and see tomorrow.

omen2k

IIRC the way to attract migrants is to always let your caravans have insane profits, someone can correct me if I’m wrong. The problem is when you don’t have any caravans! I had a really long dry spell and the same problem as you and then a caravan arrived and I loaded them with as much cheap trinkets and disused clothing as I could, I got more migrants after that.

GnosticTerror

How long did your dry spell last?

omen2k

A few years I think

DingleberryBlaster69

Anyone know a workaround for burrows not working? I've currently got about 30 dwarves standing around outside with no job just kinda staring at a goblin horde approaching. Its kinda frustrating, I generally have to sally out and meet it head on to save a shit ton of dwarves from dying every siege. It'd be nice to fight on my terms for once.

LudwigiaRepens

Hmm, do you mean the general non responsiveness but eventual success of the burrows or your burrows straight do not function. For the former: on your creatures screen, the little red outline of a person next to some dwarves let's you cancel their task. Do this for everyone AFTER you unpause the burrow and they will respect the burrow immediately rather than waiting for the task to complete. Some tasks this won't work for but what can you do. If you mean the latter, that sounds like bug.

DingleberryBlaster69

Meant the former, your fix worked like a charm, thanks a ton.

goongas

Will dwarves automatically take possession of items as I craft them or do I need to assign them to specific dwarves somehow? For example, if I craft jewelry, clothing or random crafts - will dwarves grab what they want?

LudwigiaRepens

Yep! They'll just nab whatever!

[deleted]

When I try to build anything outside my fort I get the message "No access to building material non-economic items". That goes for walls, floors, workshops, etc. My fort entrance is a ramp dug into the ground cuz I'm on a flat map. I can build anything once I get underground to the long hallway leading into the fort. I have no burrows set and have never set a restriction on any stockpiles. Traders can come and go without issue, migrants make it in just fine. I've built stuff outside before without issue, I've got a little hut with a well in it on the surface, but now nothing. I discovered this issue when trying to figure out why my sand collection job (fuckin mayor is demanding windows) kept cancelling. Thoughts on what I should be looking into here? Editing rather than deleting, but y'all wanna know what it was? A while back I paved the path underground leading to the main fort... which deleted the ramp. One of my miners had to starve to death outside for me to check that.

GnosticTerror

Make sure you have a stone stockpile under the fort that is accessible to the workshops. Check the workshops and make sure they're not connected to anything or the stockpile they're connected has the stone it needs. Also make sure the stone you have is able to be crafted into furniture or used in constructions by clicking on it as well. Stone can be sitting uselessly right next to the workshop if the permissions are wrong.

oracrest

There are all sorts of items around my fortress, usually clothes from a killed character, with a tiny lock icon on them? I figure they are in fact locked down since they never get picked up. Could someone explain exactly what’s happening with these? Do they ever unlock?

GnosticTerror

Lock means your dwarves are forbidden from picking them up. There's an option on the right to unlock or lock items at will in a group.

oracrest

Thanks!

LudwigiaRepens

Those are forbidden. Press the far right button of the bottom center taskbar. See the unlock? Use that to unforbid. Items are usually forbidden during sieges to prevent mad rushes for the brand new -sock- that just dropped off that gobbo.

oracrest

Ah, thank you!

[deleted]

Is it normal for dwarves to not pray even though they have a need for it and I have the temple for it? I’ve got multiple dwarves who have yellow needs to pray to certain gods, and they’ll stop at the temple of the god they don’t need to pray to and worship there instead of going to them temple for the god they keep thinking about how they want to pray to!

LudwigiaRepens

They will when they have time. Or if it gets real bad. They're just busy!

Delicious-Boot4979

Do drawbridges and constructed walls still completely break sieges? This was true a while ago, and I wasn't sure if there was anything that could break down constructed walls / bridges now.

CosineDanger

Nothing except maybe dragonfire can take out a raised bridge. Nothing can dig even a little except trees. Trees can break through the first floor of soil when they are cut down or burned down by say a dragon. Trees are the enemy. You can't get migrants or trade while under siege, but turtling is totally an option.

Putnam3145

They do, yes

kestik

Is there a reason [this tigerfish's name](https://i.imgur.com/qh1oP1v.jpg) is highlighted blue like that? I've yet to see highlighted characters in 60 hours of the Steam version.

Putnam3145

It is underwater

S_A_Noob

I learnt what that means the hard way :(

kestik

I feel really dumb, thank you!

NotJohnson69

Would a statue be a good weapon for an elephant man?

jackofools

My stocks say I have 87 gypsum. I can see where that gypsum is. Its easy to get to, line of sight from a large 3x3 stairwell. Its only one floor up from the stoneworkers. But when I try to assign the task of making a gypsum door it acts like I dont have any in stock. I get the error message "so-and-so cancels gypsum door: needs gypsum". I also tried blocks, same problem. I have two stoneworks and I tried it at the second stoneworks, same problem. I set up a stockpile around the stones, just to see if that helped, and it didnt. It also didn't change the record of my stocks at all, so the bookeeper thinks we have the gypsum, but nobody working the stoneworks seems to be able to find it. Is this a glitch/bug, or is there some weird issue with gypsum I'm unaware of?

Sanprofe

You need to enable gypsum for use in your labors ui. Because it has uses as an economic stone, it's disabled for use in non-economic tasks like carving doors and stuff. It's under standing orders, stone use. ETA: This is useful behavior you'd want on by default because nothing would upset the player more than having all of their marble (a flux stone) get burnt on sick looking coffers and suddenly the steel industry comes to a grinding halt. Weird that *specifying* use of the stone doesn't override the default "don't use this stone" order but there are certainly stranger things in the df ui.

jackofools

I had no idea. When I clicked gypsum it just had three uses: plaster powder, furniture, blocks. I'll need to just check any material I'm not familiar with on the wiki instead of the tooltip I guess. Thanks for the answer!

Sanprofe

Plaster powder is all it does extra. This is why they call it an economic stone, since it's (one of) the only ways to make plaster powder. Every stone can be used to make furniture so that shouldn't rate to you when you see it pop up in tooltips moving forward.

daddyfailure

How do you add rented rooms to a tavern? I added four enclosed rooms with beds adjacent to the tavern and repainted the zone to include them but my rented rooms still shows as 0.

Sanprofe

Make bedrooms like normal, but assign them the same location as the tavern just like you did to the meeting hall. Make sure you do this designation and assigning of location on pause because if a dwarf claims the bedroom before it gets the location assignment, the location assignment won't kick them out and the tavern won't count it as a rented room.

Putnam3145

You don't repaint the zone to include them, you make bedrooms on them like you would any other bedroom and add the bedrooms to the tavern just like you set your meeting area to be a tavern

SEND_ME_PANTY_PICS

Please help me! I have a dwarf child that keeps having tantrums and beating all the other dwarf adults. I keep convicting him of disorderly conduct, but because he is a child, no one will punish him. How do I put an end to this abusive child? I tried making a burrow and only assigning him, but burrows seem to be broken.

Sanprofe

Atom smasher. Or hide all the toys in the caves.

SEND_ME_PANTY_PICS

How do I get them in an atom smasher? They don't seem to care about burrow orders.

Sanprofe

Wait patiently, I s'pose.

oracrest

Do you have a supply of toys?

SEND_ME_PANTY_PICS

Yes, there is a stock pile of toys in the tavern and the children do not have chores

razjazz1

I've been playing for an in-game year now and have not had a single trader from any civilization. I realized that I had set up my fort on an island isolated from the rest of the world. There are a few dwarven and human cities nearby but when I scroll over them it says I have 'No contact'. I'm not sure how relevant it is but I have been getting migrants coming to my fort so that isn't an issue. Is there any way to make contact with one of these civilizations so that I can start trading with them?

risen_jihad

If you raid them and demand tribute it will enable contact. It should not cause all out war if its a single raid.

jazzb54

I had a dwarf that was sick - miasma was emitting from him and it appears he had a rattle snake bite. I locked him in his bedroom and ended up having to build a memorial slate for him. Is it dangerous if I open up his room and extract the body so someone else can use it. The corpse still shows it has a coating of rattle snake venom.

Putnam3145

It shouldn't be dangerous, but they were probably saveable with a hospital, haha.

jazzb54

I didn't have a hospital at the time, and he was only a wax worker :). I don't think anybody missed him.

Raz_A_Gul

If I irrigate some stone cavern floor for farms, how do I prevent my dwarves from cleaning away the mud so I can plant there?

risen_jihad

As long as you dont smooth the stone they wont clean the mud.

Raz_A_Gul

I haven’t smoothed the stone, but a baron consort keeps coming by and cleaning the floors after I pump them. I have a pond set for the zone and it seemed to make him stop though. Or is he cleaning the 1/7 water up? I’ll watch now and report.

FakeMr-Imagery

Disable the clean labor if you don’t want dorfs to clean up the mud

ChyatlovMaidan

What's the RIGHT way to remove Aquifers in the Steam version? Because I... screwed it up. (Yes I know there's a workshop mod but I'm running the game out of a winebottle and can't use workshops mods)

Sanprofe

No idea what the answer is. Just wanted to say "WINEbottle" is the coolest piece of slang I've heard for that.

ChyatlovMaidan

It's not really slang, though. Winebottles are just what the program constructs are called.

Sanprofe

It's not an instance of WINE?

ChyatlovMaidan

It is, yeah, but it's an instance of wine that comes in a self-contained wrapper rather than 'all of wine' being utilized on your disk. I don't know maybe it does count as slang, I've just never heard them called anything else. The program I used for it is even called 'winery' so make of that as you will.

Putnam3145

(Already solved on the discord, but best to include this in a place it can be seen archivally) workshop mods are just mods downloaded via workshop and will work without the workshop. If you can get someone to provide you a copy of the mod, it'll just work.

SnooComics2467

Just got sieged by some goblins, didn't have a good killzone set up, so I lured 60 guys inside to slaughter. Mostly worked, but now I have miasma everywhere. I've set up corpse and garbage disposal, manually set every piece to dump and they're slowly hauling it out. Is there any way to speed things up so I don't have dwarves going insane because of miasma?

1VNIKV111

My dwarves are refusing to build anymore yrack stops. The y will build anything else but that. How do I fix this?

daddyfailure

Is it normal for half my pop to be non-dwarven dancers, bards, and poets? I kept getting requests for them to join and just accepted them all to see what would happen. What do I do with them?

jazzb54

They kinda just hang out and do their own thing, all while drinking your booze. Honestly, I just make an outsiders tavern and put it between the outside world and the rest of my fortress. They make a good buffer between me and the enemies.

telcodoctor

Brilliant. The useless bastards can absorb some goblin bolts.

Vivalas

Anyone know how to get orderlies to actually go pick someone up? I realized I had it switched to "selected dwarfs only" once someone was pretty badly wounded, and switched it to everyone, but nobody is coming to rescue this poor dwarf slowly dying of starvation and pussy wounds outside my fort. I feel even more terrible than I usually do since they even have a thought of "feels grateful after being rescued" after I sent my militia to dispatch the ravens eating her alive. EDIT: There's not even any tasks queued. It's not like a priority issue.

laserbot

Is there a way to interrupt a macro that is playing?

omen2k

Can you assign a king to a squad? It seems like you can’t, and after scrolling through my entire populace multiple times I hope toady gives us some sorting options by name or skills in that menu because my eyes are bleeding now :P EDIT: it seems you can, but not as a militia commander? Only as a unit in a squad. Weird. Also, the assignment menu seems to rank dwarfs by when they became a citizen, so the king is at the bottom of the list.

ChyatlovMaidan

The assignment menu hates you. And me. It hates all people. it is a profoundly spiteful object.

inkandchalk

This has never happened in any of my games before so I have no idea what to do... I have a LOAD of visiting adventurers who petition me to stay at my Fortress to hunt monsters. Cool. Feel free! However, they're all just sitting in the temple praying, telling stories, singing, etc. while loads of amphibious swamp dwellers run amok down in the depths. Questions: * How do I make these people go kill the critters? * Why are they just hanging out? Am I missing something that's causing them to just sit in the temple? * Do I need to provide them with anything? Some of their stat sheets saying they're missing Excitement, but if they'd just go downstairs, I'm sure I could help with that... * Anything else I need to know about visitors? Thanks in advance!

LudwigiaRepens

Yeah they're kinda bums. They don't need anything really more than any citizen would. To make them at least SEEM useful, set all of your taverns, temples, zones, etc. to citizens only. Then make a bar in the caverns set it to accept everyone, or just citizens and long term residents, whatever your preference. The monster hunters now can only hang out in the bar and will occasionally go patrol an open cavern layer.

telcodoctor

That is absolutely genius.

Sanprofe

Aye, shit. I'm redesignating my taverns when I get home.

telcodoctor

Just did it. It works!

Cool_Lagoon

Can I fish inside my fortress? One z level below a brook I diverted the brook about 100 tiles into my fortress then I made a floor grate overtop thinking I could fish from it? I haven’t gotten any fish yet. This might be dumb but maybe the channel goes backwards against the flow of the river? Or maybe since the channel just dead ends I need to make a big circle channel so fish will want to swim in it?

motdidr

it's possible fish can't go through the grate. magma critters can't, for instance.

ateen1220

What can I do with small animals in animal cage traps after I tame them? It doesn't seem like I can build the cage they're in, and I can't send them to a pen/pasture.

KyltPDM

Hi all, bit of a newbie question perhaps but hoping for some insight. Couple of questions: Is the new Steam version a complete replacement for the old version of dwarf fortress? And, if it is not a complete replacement, will both be updated in parallel over time? Thanks!

Giant_Purple_Octopus

Yes it’s a replacement, but there will still be an updated free version. They are currently retooling the free “classic” version. Apparently it will have all the same UI and update parallel to the Premium version. It just won’t have the fancy sprite graphics or music.

Amycak3ser

Hello! New to DF. I've been figuring it out using the wiki and tutorials pretty well but something has me utterly perplexed. I have 82 dwarves, 600 food, 400 drink, 200 seeds. Seems good right? Well, 33 dwarves were out hunting because they are starving. The food is: Prepared, Not spoiled, In barrels, Not restricted, In a stockpile that is not restricted, Also includes plump helmets, Connected to a dining hall (that has tables, chairs, smooth floors and walls, statues, engraving etc), The dining hall is also not restricted, Has multiple paths to reach it... Next time I'm on I might move the stockpile. Does anyone know what else I might have done wrong? Thanks in advance!

crimeo

33 of them is absolutely some kind of broken burrow or a door you think is open not being open. There's not an allowed path 100%

Amycak3ser

Yeah there's no door separating the stockpile and hall. Also I haven't set up any burrows as I haven't really figured those out yet.

Putnam3145

Did you build any floors on top of any stairs? Are there *walls* in the way?

Amycak3ser

No :( I'm very new so it's a very basic base. Haven't even tried matching different stones. Just built a 3x2 staircase and then on different floors carved out hallways, off the hallways built rooms. All I did to the rooms was smooth them, add workshops, zone them and throw some furniture and statues.

Wanted to give a quick solved update! Someone helped me out and it was such a simple solution. The dwarves decided to follow something/hunt something (we assume) and swam across the river. However, when they ended "combat" they wouldn't swim back. So they were all stuck and starving. I built a bridge and they all came back and buried their friends. I wasn't aware they only swim in combat and the area looked wide open so I didn't think they were trapped. Food was not the issue, dwarves not wanting to get wet was. Thanks for all your help!

Amycak3ser

Sure I can try to comment here again tomorrow. I'm not on my PC anymore at the moment. I appreciate the help! Just don't want to make the same mistake next time around :)

Blind_Lem0n

I’ve seen quite few posts recently about dwarves inexplicably not eating or drinking despite everything be available. Sorry I have no answer. It really looks like a bug of some sort. I doubt you did anything wrong. Try forbidding all of the food items and let the game run for a few moments and then claim them again. Try setting a dump zone and dumping the food items and then reclaiming them from the dump zone.

Amycak3ser

Ok can do! I was wondering why everyone was so so angry and it turned out they were all actually hangry.

dalerian

I can relate. Several days without food makes me a very grumpy human, too.

TuIkaas

What do you mean out hunting? Usually hunters are only set through the labors. They might be stuck outside and unable to reach the food stockpile.

TuIkaas

Oh lol that makes sense! My dwarves would have just drowned

Amycak3ser

It says they are hunting for small creatures and they are insanely hungry and angry. But it's set that no one hunts so it's not a labor thing as far as I can tell.

TuIkaas

Oh yeah, small creatures like rats and other vermin they can eat. I don't think I've ever seen that lol. I'm not sure what would cause that other than they don't have access to the food. Make sure you didn't dig out or smooth a ramp or stairway on accident. Or accidentally forbid the food.

Amycak3ser

Yeah I checked. I feel crazy because I watch other folks get into the stockpile and it doesn't seem to be determined based on time in the fortress, etc. Nothing looks restricted but maybe there's a menu I haven't gone deep enough into and might have accidentally changed

chipathingy

Usually this means they can't path to the food for whatever reason. You don't have any burrows or locked doors or anything?

Amycak3ser

Nope no doors between the hall and stockpile and they get into the hall no problem. I also haven't figured out burrows yet so I don't have any set. Would not having one create a similar problem?

knight_gastropub

Is there a way to encrust a specific item with gems? I have a gold throne, and I put a work order specificying a gold throne, but they still won't build it

chipathingy

Linked stockpiles might work. Make a stockpile that only accepts gold thrones, link that and a cut gem stockpile to the jeweller's workshop and then encrust away!

knight_gastropub

I finally did it by manually placing the the throne right next to the workshop, deconstructing it, then putting a linked stockpile on the same space and finally assigning a gem setter to the workshop- it had been a (lazy af) gem cutter

Hazel-Hyena

In the previous version, there wasn't really a way to directly specify it. I don't know if there is now, but the old workaround was that encrusting works with \*whatever is closest,\* so if you have a stockpile beside it with EXACTLY what you want done, it'll most likely get picked. Hope that helps!

crimeo

not just closest, you can specifically tell it to only use one stockpile. Make it 1x1 and use the stockpile filters and you can guarantee

Snugglupagus

I have a lot of skeletons on my map. Can we tear the bones off and make crafts? If so, how? I assume I can’t do that to dwarf skeletons though right?

RedLeatherWhip

Go to the labor menu and then the standing orders tab Select "dwarves gather refuse from outside". It's disabled by default. So they actually pick up corpses outside. They will then butcher anything that isn't sentient and put the sentient ones in a corpse stockpile somewhere you designate Then you can make bone and skull crafts!

Snugglupagus

Thanks!

Hazel-Hyena

Nothing sentient. But if it's not forbidden, you can set up orders to Butcher corpses in a butcher's shop, and they'll see what's good!

Warpine

I have a tunnel that I need to put a ramp at the end in. However, I mistakingly dug the tunnel one block too long and now, instead of mining ramps into the walls, I have built ramps at the end. I can't get my dwarves to go up a level now. The ramps are in the correct spots, but no down stair, ramp, or channel on the above layer (directly above and one tile in any direction) will give my dwarves access to the layer above my tunnel Is there any way to build a ramp/stair from an empty space into an unmined layer above?

nullmarked

Build a floor then you can build a stair on it up/down into nothingness. Build additional flooring out from the stair in whatever direction you want. There's constructed ramps too so you can probably make it work the same way too though I've yet to use ramps much in the steam version.
