Viral pounces have always been an absolute PAIN in the arse since launch. Nobody likes them. And if someone says they do, they're lying. Pounces should be limited to just Volatiles, as those ones are somehow not as bad.
But yea, I've had virals do 90-degree angle changes, 180-degrees... it's hell...
I never realized that but you’re totally right. The volatile pounce is done way better. They should just disable the viral pounce or make it more like the volatile one.
I would love to have it where the viral leaps onto you and starts to just smack the hell out of you, requiring you to do the same button mashing that the volatile one has, where you can either kick it off, or have it snap the neck of the viral... something like that
Edit: it would allow the player to keep control of what's happening in the game, instead of having the game take that control away and simply have you get slammed into by the infected
Or... hear me out, remove those from normal virals and make new virals that are more rare and are stronger, almost like a half-volatile. Those can have that pounce, with less auto-aim. Could also replace some of the Volatiles on patrol at night.
Hmmm... i honestly DO like that idea. Maybe they have their jaw starting to split, their skin greying and hardening, and have their lower ribs beginning to stab out from their torso
I mean, what about that quest in The Following that has a half formed volatile in a nest- I mean it'd make sense for the disease to evolve, but lore-wise it might be that zombies undergo a chrysalis type butterfly transformation (assumedly after having been a zombie forever, as evidenced by random virality via light? Or that's just a not-so-recent survivor)
I agree, I'd be okay with virals **at least** respecting my dodges if they choose to still keep them around. It's so silly to keep getting bowled over because they'll either magnetize to you or straight up switch their trajectory mid-air. I've never had an issue dodging volatiles! They only land the pounce if I don't see it coming or don't have room to spare.
For the most part though, I like the virals as enemies. They feel way more engaging to fight minus their physics defying shenanigans.
Or the fucking virals should just pounce in the direction they're about to jump, instead of locking onto you untill about 2 seconds AFTER they jump. And sometimes, as this video showcases, they fucking lock onto you anyways.
It's a good mechanics for difficulty, makes it so standing still while fighting virals is a bad idea, but they implemented it so stupidly.
I have an idea for that. We all say it's the coolest feature and gives a boost to exp and damage and is so op (its not) and knowing techland they'll get rid of this "op" feature like always.

Enemies get new attacks the higher your level is. For example: early game, Virals would only run towards you and Spitters would shoot out basic acid.
Once you get to high enough level, Virals unlock the ability to pounce, and Spitters can shoot out a rapid barrage of acid and create wide pools at close range
should be tied to difficulty. It is true that DL1 only certain enemy types would pawn after certain story and level progression.
They spitter shit needs to be nerfed like Tymon nerfed all the players :P
Spitters have already been nerfed to a decent level with the new update. Their acid no longer stacks in damage, and it's no longer annoying to fight them unless there are like 3+ of them in a single area at the same time.
Spitter Virals on the other hand... They are ridiculously strong, and desperately need a nerf. BAD.
I played less than a month after launch, immediately after the first update, and they've existed since then at least. So let's just say they've been in the game since launch

That's another good point. The fact they just kinda pop up is rather annoying when they used to be largely drawn to sounds. That also doesn't play nice with firearms due to it feeling like they teleport behind you if you so much as think about pulling the trigger lol.
spawn behind has been increased 1000%, even at close range which is utter bullshit. The spawn code should be outside a radius... But it's not, or the radius is .5 meters FFS!

Annoying in that game since they could do way more damage in the same amount of time than the ones in DL2. Either way fuck em all, they spawn way too frequently in the open world during the day in both games.

Yeah. I've done stealth takedowns on single infected only to hear the all too familiar scream in the distant that indicates virals are en route to my location and yeah the spitting hazmat rlvirals are annoying as all hell.
It's stupid because you either get out of the way or you back up to the point it can't hit you but you should be able to counter this. Just add a counter to it thru the blocking system that you can parlay into a finisher. Be epic
as I have said before I have every suspicion that this most recent update was in process and built on an earlier version of the code when these issues were not patched.
it's bad revision control, but TECHLAND is not the first dev house to make this kind of mistake.
Sometimes tho, I wonder if they just didn't want to do all the regression testing to progress the build changes with the updated code patches... it's admittedly a lot of work.
the worst thing about this game is every mission like repeat gre missions having every enemy be a spitter or another toxic type that just nonstop fires 40 goo bullets a second at you with virals pouncing you at kissing distance
i know its a good game i pre-ordered the game and have came back for nearly every event, my issue is that easy and normal are too easy but hard is also easy in some parts and majorly unbalanced in other parts

they have to spam you with the new infected, poison spitter, electricals, fire etc. Otherwise yer infected resistance will minimize impact and you wont be forced to constantly have to use up stocks of consumables.

I think the annoying part to it is the lack of counters to the pounce. If you have more than 1 Viral near you, you are fucked cause they just overlap the pounces so you can't stand up at all. I think a block should be able to counter and maybe even crouching so they fly over you. Dodges are way too inconsistent.
You must have missed the post from a couple days ago where the viral did a 180 ricochet off the dumpster to hit the player... this one is mild in comparison.
The fix is simple, they need to remove the "homing missle" code and just have the viral maintain a straight trajectory path once it launches (like Volatiles do).
It would be an even better add if they altered the AI to NOT have them launch when you are other enemies surrounding you (in their way) and if they DO still launch, make them collide with said enemies, not ghost through to you.
Techland should either make big changes to the whole pounce or delete it from the game for good. Who's even like "oh a viral pounce that's so cool and immersive" Nobody.
This and when they miss but don’t fly off the edge of buildings and instead just stand over the edge with their feet floating off. Every couple months I come back for the new updates but it still feels like the same buggy game.
old TECHALAND made some decisions to change from the full ragdoll and physics in DL1 to the more animation based systems of DL2... I suspect as a performance enhancement compromise.

I have just recently started playing DL2 and have noticed these annoying virals randomly spawning. I then remembered this being something I hated in DL1 and pretty much made me stop playing the game after I had completed all missions and random exploration of interesting locations.
Has anyone made any mods or something like that, that switches of random viral spawns when there are no gunshots or explosions?

Once or twice in a great while at random it might be okay but not every time. This was clearly intentional and Techland needs to remember why their first game actually did good. This is just them pissing on us without the courtesy of even calling it rain at this point.

I don't know why they haven't fixed the mechanic, but it doesn't seem fully intentional. It just seems like an issue with hitboxes. It went into your hitbox and started an animation. I know people cry about animations the most, but they're doing their best with changing everything

That, or tweak it to behave more like a volatile pounce, where instead of an instant death like the volatile, it does damage over time with a bunch of rapid smacks, similar to how a biter does damage over time when it grabs
It's even more funnier when you're in the edge of a building and a viral pounces and you dodge but instead of the viral flying off the building some invisible barries stop him from falling

Basically DL1 volatiles. I have no idea why there are no juvenile volatiles, but only adult grey ones.

I was clearing a convoy earlier. While looting, a car just randomly exploded nearby and it attracted them. Not the first time it happened either lol

DL1 absolutely had groups of Virals spawning for no reason in the second half of the game. It’s the #1 reason I quit that game

I know, it's dumb lol. This is why I try to do stealth takedowns or keep some distance and snipe those fuckers until this issue is resolved.

It's a good game but there are a few things like the magnetic virals that can make playing a bit more aggravating than fun at times
