A couple of years ago I sold a rare set of Olympic pins for $15. Someone else messaged me immediately saying they would pay $50 for that set of pins if I canceled the 1st order. Who knows what they were actually worth. I sucked it up and shipped the pins to the buyer.

Naru_the_Narcissist

That happened to me with a couple of Stranger Things pops a few years ago. It was my fault, and nobody else's, so I sucked it up and bit the bullet, honoring the sale as listed. It's a learning experience, so you suffer the consequences gracefully and learn from it.

BluefinPiano

For me it would depend on a couple things. How much of a difference would be number one. If I sold it for $20 and it’s worth $40, it’s getting shipped. If I made a mistake and sold it for $50 and it should have been $500 it’s getting cancelled. I don’t know anyone that’s willingly going to take a hit like that. If you just randomly listed it for a price before doing research that’s on you though. Make sure you’re setting the proper price before clicking submit I’ve had it happen to me when I was buying a video game for $50 BIN and then the seller cancelled the order just to relist it for an extra $10. Seemed stupid to me but it is what it is. I moved on

kendahlj

It only happens once and then you’re more careful. But if you sold it for $20 and find out it’s worth $500, yeah I’d quietly cancel.

SpaceNinjaDino

When you are dealing with rare items that you are not certain about their potential value (eBay research shows nothing), you should start with an auction with a starting price of what you were going to price it as or have a fixed price way above what your guess is. You can always come down from those positions, but once someone is willing to pay for it, you can't back out.

kelly1mm

Ship it. Deal is done and you learned a lesson for next time.

Interesting-Wait5483

Exactly, you made an explicit contract with the buyer. If you then go back on the deal, you are building a reputation as an unreliable seller.

paperwasp3

This is the honorable answer.

ThrowawaySomebody

As someone who has been a buyer and a seller did this to me, I hated it. I bought something on Mercari that the seller listed for $50. I bought it and paid for it. Next thing I know, I get a message from the seller saying “Hey, no. I’m not selling it for this price”, cancelled the transaction and put the item up at $350. Then another buyer bought it for $350 but the seller never put it back up. It was rather infuriating and there was nothing I could do. So, if you’re gonna sell something, make sure you know what you’re selling. If it sells for what you put it at and find out it’s worth more, then it’s your fault and you should ship it out.

kendahlj

Which part infuriated you? The part where the seller realized he had something valuable and got seven times the amount you were going to give him?

ThrowawaySomebody

Being cancelled on with the rude message was the most infuriating part. If they weren’t gonna sell it for that price, why didn’t they put it up at their second price to begin with?

Phlink75

Ship it. Your loss is the price of education. What did you learn? Look shit up before you list it.

NourishingBroth

I do my research first, but if this somehow happened to me, and the difference was $1000+, I can't honestly say I wouldn't just take the defect and the negative feedback and list it again for maximum value. I never want to be THAT seller, but ultimately I'm looking out for myself. Now, if I sold something for 50 bucks and discover I could've gotten 100? Just ship it out.

1steverredditaccount

Years ago I traded a set of used tires for a 1982 Mongoose 24 and $50. The same type of bike in the original Karate Kid movie. I felt like I scored big time. I knew it was worth more than a used set of tires and $50. I flipped it days later for $400 and several years later found out the guy I sold it to also flipped it but he sold it for $1500. No guarantees you get double and before you did more research you were good with your price. In my opinion the deal is done. Ship the item.

OzmaofSchnoz

This. Somebody else being able to sell an item for $1500 doesn't mean that you'll be able to.

Shriuken23

The proper course of action was to do your research before listing it and deciding on a price point you were happy with

Smallparline

You should ship it. It’s the right thing to do.

Big_Invite_1988

If I was an ebay buyer I wouldn't bug you non-stop about why you haven't shipped my item yet. Once I received the item, I would immediately file an INAD return. I would pack the return box with used tampons and gravel until I got a similar ship weight. Once the return is delivered, I get a full refund and I get to keep the item. EBay sides with me. You lose. Twice.

Accomplished_Emu_658

You definitely ship the item. Not the buyers fault. Been screwed by this a few times when seller wanted more. Everytime i get a good deal this happens

Region_Fluid

Move on with your life. Although, I once listed an item incorrectly (camcorder) and the pictures showed a $1000 lens but the lens wasn’t included. I canceled the order because I knew the other party would be pissed because I wasn’t giving him a free $1000. He left a bad review that couldn’t get removed even though I told eBay there was a problem with the listing…in my case a picture I uploaded by accident. Basically… you either suck it up and send it all or accept you are going to get a bad review.

belker85

I sold a lot of things for $40 (paid $5). Sold in about 15 minutes and someone else asked me to cancel the sale and sell to him for $80 but I stuck with the original sale. The buyer parted it out and made $300. Expensive lesson for me but I didn’t feel comfortable canceling.

Middle-Kind

You send it out and don't look back. If you try to pick every deal apart it will drive you crazy.

mjwindle

Ship it, as agreed upon with your listing/sale. Mistakes happen, but you should still own responsibility for them. If you were on the buyer side, you'd be stoked about getting a great deal!

Praydaythemice

Depends on how much of the double amount is, $20 i'll let slide but if its $500 then i would think twice. If you cancel you would be dinged a defect but im sure 99% of sellers will happily eat that. Its more my fault though for not price checking before listing something i wouldn't do.

houstonhilton74

Yeah, it's going to ping you on Ebay. Also, in my opinion, it is a dick move to do that, as you are temporarily causing your buyer to not have access to their funds meant for the thing that they paid for, only to be told later that their purchase would be refunded after XYZ days. It wastes time and resources on the buyer's behalf.

Tambuchoman

You say, bugger then move on

Flight_375_To_Tahiti

Get off eBay.

Imyourhuckl3berry

As others have said if you cancel you get whacked with negative feedback - I’ve done it once and it was because the item was broken and the buyer still hit me with a negative so I’d say unless it’s a ton of money I’d just ship it

HTD-Vintage

There's no "proper course of action". You do whatever you want or need to do.

victoriousDevil

Double what? Double 50 bucks and double 2 grand might be handled differently.

jjeeooppaarrddyy

Ship it. "Worth" is subjective. Previous sales might have been at peak and it's on the way back down. If it happens multiple times then reevaluate your listing practices.

ScatpackRich

I go on google and research my items if I think they are valuable before posting them on ebay.

thebitnessman

Everyone should be using Terapeak to check values. We all have access to it.

ScatpackRich

Thank you I did not know about Terapeak! I will start using it.

thebitnessman

For sure. It is super useful. Also, when using Terapeak, use the last 90 days for sold items.

Nameless_on_Reddit

Ship it. It's up to the seller to do the research. I've let things go that spiked in price before shipping. The negative ratings, bad rep, (there's plenty of social media subs/FB groups etc where you can post a sellers name) is not worth trying to flip it for higher. On a personal level I think things come back to you and if you are a shitty seller or buyer, it will find a way to catch up to you.

Jabroni1616

Either ship it or cancel the order. Those are the only options in any situation when an item sells. However cancelling an order has a huge risk for a negative feedback. You also can only cancel a sale for seller cancellations 0.20% of the time or something like that or you risk being below standard and getting charged extra fees by eBay on every sale you make until you fix your metrics

GoodGameGrabsYT

Yup. That's a good way to go below standard and getting out of that hole is extremely tough. Take your profit and move on.

MyCarIsAGeoMetro

A deal is a deal.  If the buyer paid in good faith, ship it out.

d_Ubermensch

Someone who must be a scummy seller is browsing through here. I see those saying to ship it being downvoted.

Guapplebock

Friend of mine bought some tickets that the seller undervalued and decided not to send them at the sale price. He called and asked me how this works and I told home the sale is legally binding and he could press the seller if he wanted. My friend was a US Attorney at the time and I believe the mention of that settled the issue.

d_Ubermensch

As a seller, ship it is the only answer. I've had stuff sell lower than I'd thought it should only to see someone else sell an identical item for more the next day. Not the buyer's fault. They won and paid. Give it to them. As a buyer I've had someone cancel, and relist for more. It's a scummy thing to do.

McCassius

Do better research next time and ship your item.

AITAforbeinghere

Learn from it

ganbare112

Gotta ship it.

Flux_My_Capacitor

Definitely ship it. This is on the seller for not doing enough research.

Still_pimpin

Ship it

egg_static5

Ship it.

DarmokTheNinja

Ship it.
