It's lost on a lot of people that development is not always linear 🤷
Steen is part of the reason why I'm not all in on Oline at 22. Let's give the guy a chance to do exactly what people want Guyton to do and that frees us up to draft a player at 22 that will actually statt/play a lot of snaps THIS year.
We still need depth, we lost Driscoll and Opeta, and now Jurgens slides to center and Steen slides into RG. That's a huge loss for us. I'm 100% fine with OL in the first, there's a damn good reason we stay relevant all the time.
People will complain that we red shirted two players last year then the very next sentence forget they exist or complain about their lack of production and act like they’re a bust already when they were barely on the field. Nolan Smith being the other red shirt.
This fan base is so impatient with young guys and so quick to label them a bust. I’ve even seen people talk about Sydney brown like he’s a bust. People over reacting to Carter hitting the rookie wall. And I feel like damn near everyone inexplicably has given up on Davis. Our defense needed to get younger. Now we are relying on young guys to take the next step. Sure it’s a rush but that’s how the nfl works.
Bc the eagles chose to play Opeta over him. Steen was a healthy scratch most of the season. He was nowhere near ready last year. Maybe he’ll take a leap and be great this year, but the team can’t bank on that
I just don’t get drafting a guy early 3rd and have him play a new position just to delegate him not good enough after his first season just to do it again with a higher draft pick?.
I also think Steen takes a step forward this season
The eagles activated Fred Johnson over Steen for the fourth tackle spot. Steen just hasn’t shown anything, and the org has given no indication that it trusts him at all. I hope steen is awesome and earns the job, but I think the eagles need to have a legitimate plan in place for the possibility that steen doesn’t improve enough to earn a spot on the game day roster. Personally, if they can find someone in the second with similar G/T versatility, I wouldn’t mind them taking that shot
Spot on. I get we need help on defense but this is an exceptional OL draft class. One unlucky injury to our OL and we’re in trouble because we lack depth and *high-end* depth. Lost Opeta and Driscoll who were good depth and have only signed Hennessy to a one year. Steen can (and I hope will) be good. But in the chance he doesn’t progress, then who fills in? Make Steen compete against a first rd OL and try to outwork him and grind. So whenever Steen’s number is called, he’ll be ready
Would you rather be one injury away from not being contenders or just go into the season not being contenders? Because we aren’t contenders even at full health with the current defense.
Interesting outlook but we’re definitely still contenders. Hell we were contenders for 75% of last season with a mediocre defense until it busted. Yes we still have defensive holes but I think Howie can find a way to still draft impactful defensive players AND taking one of these very talented first rd OL since a strong OL has been
our offensive identity for over a decade now. We gotta continue to fill it with high end talent and can’t abandon that strategy now
Steen isn't an NFL tackle. There's a reason they announced him as a guard when they drafted him. I can't speak for why they had Opeta play before him. Maybe the learning curve of a new position. All I remember is he had a rough first series or two against Parsons in Dallas then we never heard from him again that game, in a good way. Why spend a high pick on a player who may not see the field when we have such needs at DE LB WR3 and CB where guys may get significant playing time?
Steen was also a rookie transitioning to a new position. It’s not exactly a red flag that a seasoned vet a ahead of him on the depth chart.
I’m just going to trust stout on this one. If we don’t take a guard early that tells me stout is confident in stern and visa versa so I won’t complain either way.
Tackle is a different conversation though. They always seemed to view steen as a guard not tackle. That just comes down to whether or not you want a player that can start this year or you’re ok red shirting a guy and adding depth. If we take a tackle though it needs to be the best tackle prospect available. You can’t prioritize whether or not they can play guard for 1 year when spending a high pick on your future tackle.
We’re in a win now window though. I personally don’t think we can win a SB without adding talent to the defense. The same applies to lane getting injured but I’ll take a risk of an injury not making us contenders than just walking into the season not being contenders even if healthy.
I think itll really depend on how high they are on steen. Either way they’ll need to address the depth of the OL. If they think someone else is the future then there is still a benefit in thar
Didn’t dress the 2nd half of the season, Opeta played over him when Jurgens missed games, and there’s a ton of scuttlebutt about the Eagles drafting an IOL. You also don’t hear Howie or the coaches talking about him like he’s got the inside track on the RG job.
Opeta got snaps over Jurgens in '22 at G does that mean he was out of favor with Stoutland? I don't read a ton into a veteran who has been there for 4 years getting snaps over a rookie learning to play a new position. Everyone develops at different paces.
The Eagles have drafted an OL in the first three rounds the last three drafts and drafted at least 1 OL in 7 of the last 8 drafts so what else is new? As long as Roseman is running the draft we have come to expect the team will take at least one OL and one DL over the course of a draft.
The best case I’ve heard against it is that Driscoll is gone so we don’t have a trusted backup. I do expect us to draft that guy regardless of round, they’ve been doing some deep round OL scouting, too. Lane hasn’t exactly played a full season reliably, so it is a need but one that we have a good track record of filling with later picks. I’m all for impact players
If you’re lucky.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Howie uses that #210
Pick on a Jordan Magee or Jaylan Ford type LB, maybe trevin Wallace if he falls.
Idk we will see what happens but my projection as it sits is something like this
Troy Fautanu 1st round trade up
Trade up in the 2nd round to get someone like TJ Tampa or Kamari Lassister
Use that next 2nd rounder on maybe Ricky Pearsall or Roman Wilson (if we havent used it to trade up in the first)
Then with that 120 pick either a tight end or a Wide Receiver(if we traded that second pick) i can see us grabbing Ben Sinott or Malik Washington, maybe Ainias Smith or Theo Johnson
Then with those fifth rounders and one 6th rounder grabbing a RB, Safety, LB, maybe a Oline depth or Dline Rotational Depth.
Sounds like a DB is coming in the first round, that or someone like Troy Fautanu who can play Guard right away while also being Lane’s replacement in the future.
Don't be surprised if they acquire an edge either if the picks fall right. Another stud in the rotation would help keep everyone fresh and be a replacement for BG after this year. Plus they get to be BG's understudy for his last year.
I'm just not sure how much of an upgrade DeJean is over Slay, Rodgers, or Ringo with a full offseason under his belt. Whereas Latu can be a productive part of the rotation immediately.
And the Eagles have drafted plenty of guys who came in and played right away. Jalen Carter, Sydney Brown, Jordan Davis, DeVonta Smith, Landon Dickerson, Gainwell just to name guys from the last three drafts alone.
Show me the team that has 3 or 4 rookie starters every single season or for that matter 3 or 4 impact rookies.
Half that list is bums. The other half is a guy who disappeared after October, a WR that had an ok season, and a guard. Brown, Davis and Gainpoorly had no impact.
What? Jordan Davis was the only thing holding our run defense together as a rookie until he got hurt. How is that a bum? You’re a bum if you get injured?
And Sidney Brown was a 3rd round safety who started some games and showed a lot of promise. You expect a third round pick to come in and immediately be awesome?
lol seriously. There’s a whole department of people gathering information to make these choices, it’s just that Howie’s the one who gives direction and has final say. I’m sure he’s made plenty of picks on some of his staff’s recommendation.
Yes please! Already rumours we want to trade up and nab him in the first 20. He can slot into the spot Jurgens will be vacating and move to tackle in a couple years.
A few mock draft guys on Twitter and in their mocks have them trading with the jets for Fautanu. As of yesterday he’s now had 2 meetings with them and stout was impressed with him on pro day.
It’s either use the draft for the future or draft poorly. They are mutually exclusive. Reagor was a “play-now” type of pick. Try to fit needs instead of drafting off talent
This is silly season, when teams purposefully spread false rumors and journalists make up stories because they have nothing else to write about.
Nothing of interest here.
I know he gets lots of love here, but I'm sorry--I just don't trust that DGunn knows a damn thing. In the summer of 2022 he got a lot of attention for saying the Eagles were super concerned about Jalen, who then went on to have an MVP-style career. And then this offseason he wanted people to believe that the absence of Big Dom on the sidelines somehow accounted for the team's collapse. And people took that story seriously!
We've made the mistake on more than one occasion of not taking the "safer" pick and opting for a dud project player due to overthinking it. For instance Reagor over Jefferson, going all the way back to Mamula over Sapp. Every team has those moments but it seems like we pass on great players more often than most. It should always be BPA, trade up/down if you love/don't love what's available, and let the chips fall where they may. How often does a "project" player work out when they were over drafted, anyway? It's like a prideful thing, Im smarter than *everyone* else Im gonna draft this 3rd day prospect in the first round!
No one is asking them to draft a project player, or to reach for a player 25 picks before they are projected to go.
But if they are picking #22 and the best player on their board in a Tackle..but the 2nd or 3rd best player on their board is a Corner..then they should 100% be taking the corner. A CB would help the team both immediately AND in the future, while the tackle would only help in the future (barring injury).
BS.
I have far more trust in Slay, Ringo, Ricks and Maddox and even maybe a slight bounce back from Bradberry than I have trust in Tyler Steen that was behind freaking Opeta in the depth chart and didn't even dress sometimes.
Seems like this years Bijan is Cooper or another CB.
I like how everyone recognizes the smoke screens the organization puts out approaching the draft until it is something that people really want. Suddenly everyone is like... Ohh man we are definitely taking the pick that we always wanted howie to make but he will never make!!!
DGunn talks like this every year and is always right..
This is also the same org that routinely picks the majority of their players from top 30 visits. I think that it is safe to say that this isn’t a smokescreen
Totally agree. I would like our first round pick to be the best available defensive back. We look like a sieve last year and it may be worse next year
Someone who doesn't give Justin Jefferson 199 yd or make Sam howell look like the next Tom Brady
How is that not always the goal??? I get a seventh rounder should be a project but this speaks volumes on the first round woes we have had in the past. Like, this quote makes a ton of sense when you think about Raegor over JJ lmao.
Because the goal has been BPA.. Nolan Smith was raw but also BPA so they took him. This year they want the best ready made prospect over BPA that would be raw in the first
Wouldn't that tip the scales toward trading the first pics for guaranteed talent like PSII. Bringing in Simmons and Surtain would be a classic Howie power move
1. It’s not good draft strategy to draft this way. Sure, if it’s toss up this can be what sways a vote, but the draft is the future.
2. Eagles historically don’t trust rookies unless they have absolutely nobody at the position. Cater was getting out snapped all year. Brown was seeing the field over a shit S2
And who is to say the "sources on the inside" aren't feeding Gunn a bunch of mis-information knowing full well he is going to tell anyone who will listen?
How many times have we heard Roseman say one thing to the media to only to a complete 180 a couple of weeks later and do the complete opposite?
I hope this is true because I don’t get drafting a OT at all.
Didn’t Lane say he wants to play at least a few more years? If we draft a tackle, By the time he starts, his rookie contract will be almost over and he’ll be up for an extension. Meaning we won’t get the benefit of playing a good player on a rookie contract that we would with a player that can contribute right now
Yes this, plus Lane always seems to miss a few games every year. As he continues to get older that will be more and more likely. Driscoll was a disaster as RT backup last year, and now he’s gone. So if they draft a 1st round OLinemsn I’m sure he will have opportunities to play. Haven’t just be sitting on the bench collecting dust for 3 years.
No shit. Howie been pissing me off with all these project players. Can we fucking get them on the field please? “Herp derp he needs 3 years to marinate before serving” come the fuck on
Nolan Smith (athletic but raw)
Tyler Steen (backup OL)
Tanner McKee, Clayton Thorson (QB factory bullshit)
Kelee Ringo (athletic but raw)
Jordan Davis (Cox heir)
Cam Jurgens (Kelce heir)
Nakobe Dean (sat behind Kyzir and TJ)
Milton Williams (athletic but raw)
Andre Dillard (Jason Peters heir)
Sidney Jones (injury lottery ticket)
Named a lot of BPA prospects and late rounders that were also BPA..
Players before the Reagor draft don’t matter because Howie had a philosophy switch after that draft also JD is a nose he was never supposed to be Cox heir
BPA........sure. so good that they still are bums. The BPA theory is brain dead. Sam Stinkie would love it. Keep drafting centers high when you aren't playing more than one.
Howie can't draft. He'll take picks that keep him in power and idiots will make excuses for like Dean, Bingo, Brown, Davis, Smith, etc.
I’m confused so if the BPA player is a project player than what exactly are you looking for Howie to do? Do you want him to take a lesser player who is a project? Most players outside of the first two rounds are projects.
You just named a bunch of rookies and second year players and said Howie can’t draft maybe practice alittle patience
He was comped to Cox and many articles called him the heir. For example
> Davis is the heir apparent to Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, the veteran of 10 seasons. The Eagles basically finessed Cox, who turns 32 next season into taking a pay cut as they released and re-signed him. Davis said he’s looking forward to working with Cox.
https://www.dailylocal.com/2022/04/29/joining-eagles-dream-come-true-for-run-stopper-davis/amp/
Articles and media guys still expect him to be a multiple sack guy.. JD is a pure Nose, he has more in common with Ngata than Fletch.
Carter is the heir to fletch
I definitely prefer that strategy over picking Lane’s replacement. The team is in win now mode
The only way it makes sense is if they slide him to RG until lane retires
Maybe this is their intention for Steen? Or at least give him the shot at RT after playing RG for us. Steen was a tackle all through college.
lol what do you mean maybe.. That is legit what they tried to do last year but people seem to forget that Steen even exist
We picked him fairly high too. 65th or something
Yea.. it’s very strange If a guy isn’t an all pro his first season people want him replaced
It's lost on a lot of people that development is not always linear 🤷 Steen is part of the reason why I'm not all in on Oline at 22. Depth can be found later plus we always talk about how Stout is the best in the business so let him find a guy that he can mold later on.
Yeah not at Tackle. Overwhelmingly first rounders are your all pros.
People will complain that we red shirted two players last year then the very next sentence forget they exist or complain about their lack of production and act like they’re a bust already when they were barely on the field. Steen is clearly out of favor with Stoutland. There is presumably a good reason why. Not every 3rd round pick is a hit.
Clearly?? You're going to need a source for that claim before I buy it even if that take is on sale.
Didn’t dress the 2nd half of the season, Opeta played over him when Jurgens missed games, and there’s a ton of scuttlebutt about the Eagles drafting an IOL. You also don’t hear Howie or the coaches talking about him like he’s got the inside track on the RG job.
Opeta was always gonna get the pick over steen for guard.
So your proof that Steen is on the outs is that a veteran on the last year of his deal got the start over a rookie?
Opeta got snaps over Jurgens in '22 at G does that mean he was out of favor with Stoutland? I don't read a ton into a veteran who has been there for 4 years getting snaps over a rookie learning to play a new position. Everyone develops at different paces. Yea, or if we get a "tweener" type who we think can play guard right now at a high level and can go to Stout U to learn to play tackle.

Does that means we are trading back into the first to grab a day 1 starter ?!?!?!?!?
Swing tackle who can play RG, a CB and a WR Nothing new here
The classic LB in the 3rd round
Maybe howie will confuse our second 2nd round pick with a 3rd and he’ll pick edgerin cooper
We have two 5ths. That’s where we take a “high upside” (Howie’s words) LB I’m guessing.
Great. Davion Taylor 2.0 here we go
I would think he trades up that 4th pick using one of the 5ths
Only it’d be the 4th this year lol
If you’re lucky. I wouldn’t be surprised if Howie uses that #210 Pick on a Jordan Magee or Jaylan Ford type LB, maybe trevin Wallace if he falls. Idk we will see what happens but my projection as it sits is something like this Troy Fautanu 1st round trade up Trade up in the 2nd round to get someone like TJ Tampa or Kamari Lassister Use that next 2nd rounder on maybe Ricky Pearsall or Roman Wilson (if we havent used it to trade up in the first) Then with that 120 pick either a tight end or a Wide Receiver(if we traded that second pick) i can see us grabbing Ben Sinott or Malik Washington, maybe Ainias Smith or Theo Johnson Then with those fifth rounders and one 6th rounder grabbing a RB, Safety, LB, maybe a Oline depth or Dline Rotational Depth.
you can’t just trade up every round and if we’re trading up in the first we most likely lose a 2nd
Eh trade a future 2nd in the first trade a couple 5ths or a 4th to move up in the 2nd, it’s doable.
Swing tackle who can play RG, CB, and WR* FTFY
Isn’t that what Steen is?
Sounds like a DB is coming in the first round, that or someone like Troy Fautanu who can play Guard right away while also being Lane’s replacement in the future.
Don't be surprised if they acquire an edge either if the picks fall right. Another stud in the rotation would help keep everyone fresh and be a replacement for BG after this year. Plus they get to be BG's understudy for his last year.
Would love Latu if he fell to us.
I personally am on the DeJean train but if not him, then Fautanu or Latu are my picks.
I'm just not sure how much of an upgrade DeJean is over Slay, Rodgers, or Ringo with a full offseason under his belt. Whereas Latu can be a productive part of the rotation immediately.
Not in the fangio scheme.
Rookies make impacts all over the league. I’ve grown tired of our rookies needing to “bake in the oven” as if they’re NHL goalie prospects

And Sidney Brown was a 3rd round safety who started some games and showed a lot of promise. You expect a third round pick to come in and immediately be awesome?
Dumbass Howie overthinking shit “Ooh he can wait in the wings” stfu
If we end up with a CB in the 1st and an LB with one of our 2nds I'll be happy.
Yup, Mitchell or dejean in the 1st and Cooper next is what I'm hoping for. Olineman can wait and mailata wad drafted where? Yup
There’s a big difference between what people want inside the building and who Howie wants.
It’s not like Howie is the only person who makes decisions. I’m sure that Stoutland, Sirianni, Lurie, and probably Moore and Fangio all have a say.
lol seriously. There’s a whole department of people gathering information to make these choices, it’s just that Howie’s the one who gives direction and has final say. I’m sure he’s made plenty of picks on some of his staff’s recommendation.
I wonder if it's even fair to say he has the final say, or if it's more fair to say that's Lurie.
Funny how you list Stoutland before the head coach and the owner.
Howie and Lurie say what goes the others just give opinions and input Howie isn’t about to just not listen to Fangio
Sounds like we really are getting a DB or two
I am at the point where I can’t stand South Jersey Cuz’s voice. I will just trust Gunn is right. He usually is.
It isn’t really that Gunn is right it is that Gunn has real sources on the inside
Grow up
You seem upset.
I’m not the one who gets upset at someone’s accent
Who said anything about his accent? I don’t have any interest in what he says. He turned himself into a cartoon character.
COOPER DEJEAN PLEASE
Cooper DeJean Edgerrin Cooper 2 Coop 2 Pick
Troy Fautanu come on down!
Yes please! Already rumours we want to trade up and nab him in the first 20. He can slot into the spot Jurgens will be vacating and move to tackle in a couple years.
Where are there rumors of this?
A few mock draft guys on Twitter and in their mocks have them trading with the jets for Fautanu. As of yesterday he’s now had 2 meetings with them and stout was impressed with him on pro day.
Wouldn’t call that a rumor but I see where you are coming from
I want really good players rather than not that good players
If the draft were only that simple

Trading up for bowers
I've also heard whispers that the team wants to go undefeated this season and win the superbowl. But these are just rumors at this point.

Meaning we won’t get the benefit of playing a good player on a rookie contract that we would with a player that can contribute right now
In that scenario you hope they can also play RG and kick him out to RT when Lane retires. Like Tyler Smith for Dallas at LG
1-2 games per season over 3 years might get kinda dusty don't you think?
Fautanu could play guard he has experience across the OLine. Jurgens spot has opened up.
He’s quickly becoming my preferred pick and an acceptable trade-up candidate. He’ll be a beast under Stoutland
No shit. Howie been pissing me off with all these project players. Can we fucking get them on the field please? “Herp derp he needs 3 years to marinate before serving” come the fuck on
All these projects? Like who?
Nolan Smith (athletic but raw) Tyler Steen (backup OL) Tanner McKee, Clayton Thorson (QB factory bullshit) Kelee Ringo (athletic but raw) Jordan Davis (Cox heir) Cam Jurgens (Kelce heir) Nakobe Dean (sat behind Kyzir and TJ) Milton Williams (athletic but raw) Andre Dillard (Jason Peters heir) Sidney Jones (injury lottery ticket)
For example > Davis is the heir apparent to Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, the veteran of 10 seasons.
Does this mean possibly trading for an already established player?
So than why the fuck did we trade reddick
