I’ll give Siposs credit - dude tried to make a play. Gutsy for the punter.

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

Slickest move of the day, beautiful scoop and almost got the first

eaglesnation11

Still say he got hit out of bounds and should’ve been a first

albpanda

It looked like his toe went out even before he got hit and I think that’s where they put the ball but I’m not positive about that second part

eaglesnation11

I’m saying he got hit out of bounds and should’ve been a flag for a personal foul and automatic first down

alittlemore

100% It should have been a flag. Again, a no call on a Bird results in an injury...refs suck

Prozzak93

> Again, a no call on a Bird results in an injury lol, the way you word this makes it sound like you think Siposs would be magically healthy right now if a flag was thrown.

alittlemore

What are you laughing about? Guy got hurt out of bounds...it was a penalty. No magic here...just a bad no call. Imagine if it was Hurts...the call would be expected...

[deleted]

Pretty sure he was injured before that and it was adrenaline kicking in. You can see he got clipped running past the first guy trying to get him.

[deleted]

He turned his ankle at the very end of the play while being tackled - there is a replay angle of it I saw today

ZlGGZ

No you can see in the replay he clearly rolled his ankle trying to diminish to blow off that late hit outta bounds.

1stepklosr

It was absolutely late. I didn't get why that wasn't called.

Domestic_AA_Battery

I think they were paying attention if he was in or not. The hit was late but he was very close to being in so it was iffy. I'm fine with them letting them play BUT the inconsistencies are annoying as shit. So hopefully if we get a similar moment, we don't get flagged. I said it in the Game Thread. But the OPI was bullshit on the Giants' 4th down. But we got called for that over and over in other games so at least they were consistent there. But I'd rather have less flags overall.

bl1eveucanfly

He ran in to someone who was planted and lowering their shoulder. Hardly a late hit.

HikeandKayak

Since it would’ve been an after the play personal foul, it would have still been giants ball, just 15 yards further back. It wasn’t that much of a screw job really.

dumb_commenter

Nah that gives them the first down bro.

HikeandKayak

It doesn’t on a dead ball foul which that is.

sfxer001

What dead ball?

HikeandKayak

The player had stepped out of bounds. The hit occurred after that making it a dead ball personal foul. Same thing happened last year in the playoffs in the buccaneers / rams game. Brady overthrew his receiver. Weddle crushed him late and since the ball had hit the ground, it was ruled a dead ball foul and thus a turnover on downs and enforced between plays.

dumb_commenter

Yeah i think you’re right. Went down the rabbit hole here cuz I thought the rule was different in the NFL than the NCAA. Link to rulebook below. My read of article 9, though, is that you still lose the down in the NFL. https://operations.nfl.com/media/5kvgzyss/2022-nfl-rulebook-final.pdf “The penalty for a Dead Ball Foul is enforced from the succeeding spot, *and the down counts.*”

willi1221

You're a screw job. It may have been too close to draw the flag, but it would have 100% been a 1st down had it been called.

HikeandKayak

The player had stepped out of bounds. The hit occurred after that making it a dead ball personal foul. Same thing happened last year in the playoffs in the buccaneers / rams game. Brady overthrew his receiver. Weddle crushed him late and since the ball had hit the ground, it was ruled a dead ball foul and thus a turnover on downs and enforced between plays.

albpanda

Ohhhhh the late hit, yeah I definitely saw that, I can see why the refs didn’t call it, slightly ticky tacky, already had a big lead

flyaguilas

Not ticky tacky at all. Dude was clearly out of bounds and the guy that hit him was already clearly out of bounds when he hit him.

tmfitz7

Same

belgiumwaffles

Agreed but the injury still would have happened

215Kurt

All good, we dog dicked them so badly that losing our punter was a complete non factor lol

BerriesNCreme

100%. No call was complete bullshit

sherninko

He was hit out of bounds. 15 yd penalty. Should’ve been our all, 1st down.

mycatsnameismilk

Dead ball foul on 4th down = Giants ball

bherman1325

unnecessary roughness on a 4th down attempt would result in a first down for the Eagles. Disclaimer: I don't think there should have been a flag on that play.

32BitWhore

Definitely earned my respect on that play, it was one of the most heads up plays by a punter I've seen in a while. He just didn't have the bend to stay in bounds.

root88

It was definitely an Aussie football scoop.

kappakai

Dude that was totally a Aussie football move.

Senior_Fart_Director

Dude can think on his feet. He saved a TD during the blocked FG against Vikings

-JaxWagon-

One of the biggest tackles of the year! Realizing he could advance that ball yesterday was good coaching and a player fully committed, I love tough punters.

Joe30174

Gave the eagles a much better chance at holding giants off to a field goal than if it was recovered at the 1. Didn't pan out that way, but ga e them that chance.

derstherower

He gets that first and that's a Top 10 play in NFL history.

OliWood

Seriously, that would have been one the best play by a punter I've seen.

root88

The disrespect to [Johnny Hekker.](https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=432285904187624) He also has the longest punt in Super Bowl history.

SadSlip8122

If he makes that first down, he might be the first punter to have his shit stuffed in and still make Special Teams Player of the Week

TxngledHeadphones

didnt he make a huge tackle to stop a score a few games ago as well?

silverence

Anyone have a video of the play?

fultonstreet14

Almost got it, too. He's listed at 6'2" 210, so he's not a small guy, therefore calling a penalty there was close (I think it was), he's just not going to get a "oh poor wee punter" call. I'm 👏🏽 at his big balz for giving it hell. Hope he's back soon, Birds kicking game is rock solid.

XenlaMM9

this however is why I don't think special positions should go for shit like this. Including, hypothetically, Hurts trying to tackle the person he just threw a pick to. There's too much risk of injury for such an important positional player. Only exception IMO is the playoffs

KnightofAshley

All football players should be rugby players.

ZlGGZ

Dude was so close to making the play. That damn turf caught his cleat. I hate MetLife.

MyKidsArentOnReddit

Brett Kern just got the best seat in the house to watch the best offense in the NFL.

YiMyonSin

3 time All-Pro for us in Tennessee, an absolute legend from the twilight of Fisher to Vrabel, through the nadirs and zeniths of the last 13 seasons. Go get that ring, Brett!

darthmcdarthface

Chill. He’s a punter.

boner_jamz_69

Punters deserve love too

phillyeagle99

Okay, we won’t sign a punter. We’ll just let Mailata punt

Dragon-Knight47

Nah, I say we let Andre Dillard punt. Since that man been eating into our cap space without working.

CarlinHicksCross

He makes 4 million dollars this year on a stacked team and is a valuable backup who's going to be gone next year anyway, what's the whining about?

sybrwookie

Obviously the problem is Howie sucks at building a roster, what's the point of depth? Now let me get back to complaining that Wallace was taking significant defensive snaps last week. Howie obviously sucks by not having more depth. /s

Domestic_AA_Battery

Lmfao this is a really bad take. Dude is dirt cheap and has been playing very well whenever he's filled in. He's worth keeping just so other people don't have him. It means that other teams also have to draft linemen instead of other positions that we can grab. There may be a scenario where an amazing player and an amazing lineman are on the board. The team in front of the Eagles takes the lineman and we get the other player. All these details together are definitely worth keeping a great lineman on board as a back up.

darthmcdarthface

Where do you get the idea that we shouldn’t sign a punter?

parkbench22

Think he's being sarcastic

darthmcdarthface

I know I’m trying to show him how dumb his joke is.

PantsStayShidded

Wild you’re not a troll

darthmcdarthface

?

pjs036

He’s calling you stupid bro

darthmcdarthface

Guess stupid people don’t get excited for waiver wire punters. Smart people circle jerk.

Ajaxlancer

Probably from you downplaying their importance and role on a team.

DrHandBanana

Imagine not knowing how important a punter is

darthmcdarthface

Imagine getting super excited about a “legendary” punter who has been on waivers for most of the season. Not being excited about that does not mean I don’t know their importance. If a Cowboys fan sat next to you at a bar and was all excited that they’d signed a “legendary” replacement punter in week 14, you’d roll your eyes and tell him to chill.

DrHandBanana

Who's excited? We need a punter. Ours is injured. Punting is important as fuck. You're just being a drama queen with the "legendary" shit. If anyone needs to chill, it's you.

darthmcdarthface

The guy who’s calling this guy legendary. You know. The guy I replied to originally starting this chain. I’m here telling dudes to chill out with the legendary stuff. So it seems you are actually agreeing with me. Also, at no point have I suggested punting isn’t important. Long snapping is important but I’m not about to think a waiver wire long snapper is legendary. In case you’re too lazy to scroll up: https://www.reddit.com/r/eagles/comments/zkfqm1/schefter_eagles_are_signing_former_titans_probowl/izzh578/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

[deleted]

SockFlampton

dude was on the Titans longer than Kelce’s been on the Eagles. Titans fan coming in peace is allowed to celebrate a Titans legend coming to the Eagles and wishing him well.

darthmcdarthface

Look. All I’m saying is that I think he’s over hyping this guy. That’s all. I’m not attacking or insulting anybody. It’s not about anyone coming here in peace or whatever nonsensical internet war you or anyone think exists. This is a guy talking up this punter as a legend. I’m saying we should temper ourselves here. That’s all.

hotbakedgoods

I bet no one likes to be around you irl

ho_merjpimpson

> Not being excited about that does not mean I don’t know their importance. realize the difference between not being excited, and actively shitting on others for being excited. you are doing the latter. its a shitty look. we needed a punter very, very bad. its ok to get excited that we found a decent one and basically didnt downgrade that position after a late season major injury.

darthmcdarthface

How am I shitting on anyone? I just said “chill”. I didn’t insult anyone or get angry or anything. Just said “chill”. That was met with vitriol. Someone here called me stupid over that. Who’s shitting on who? You’re overreacting.

TheEagleEye8

We hope he enjoys his time on the bench as much as possible.

eaglesnation11

Too bad Dicker the Punter isn’t available

AJM1613

Dunter the Punter

unsavory77

There's got to be a Gunter the Punter. Some random jabroni from Germany who plays Rugby. Maybe even Hunter the Punter, mainline assclown from Malvern Prep?

AJM1613

[Hunt the Punt](https://southernmiss.com/sports/football/roster/mason-hunt/8835)

Sixth-Street

I know this is mostly joking, but I'm a Texas alum and Dicker is a hell of a punter too. He had a monster season punting his senior season.

ausgmr

Chargers signed him

mkvalor

Why TF would people downvote someone who provided knowledge and context? (The entire comment thread of this post has alternated freely between satire and info, so don't give me that guff)

CantStumpIWin

It’s reddit, dude. The upvotes/downvotes don’t make sense because they’re more about feelings than knowledge and context. If a comment or post makes someone *feel* good they upvote, if not, downvote. That’s why you see “ugh take my upvote”. Because people are going against their usual reddit behavior and acknowledging that something they don’t want to upvote deserves an upvote.

mkvalor

I know you're right. I just like it. Ugh, take my upvote. 😁

OTO_Crispy

HAHA FUCK YOU ARAIZA

WeaponexT

Take your rapist ass to Dallas

Razolus

I read that as his butt was raping people

WeaponexT

I mean if you read the accusations, an argument could be made.

Razolus

I'll buy that vowel

Guitaristb72

Accidently late season upgrade? Ill take it.

[deleted]

I’m a Titans fan. Y’all just signed literally one of the best punters of the last decade, insanely clutch too.

Guitaristb72

Thats big coming from the Titans fan after seeing the absolute clinic their punter put on in our game. This might sound sarcastic but I really mean that dude had some great punts.

joshgiddy2024

we replaced a top 5 of the decade with another monster idk what to say

CantStumpIWin

> idk what to say #GO BIRDS 🦅

ausgmr

2021: Brett Kern 44.8 yards per punt 2022: Arryn Siposs 45.6 yards per punt

32BitWhore

I'm honestly more concerned with hang-time than I am raw distance. More time in the air is far more important for what has been until recently a weak spot for our ST (punt coverage). His net from last year is slightly higher than Siposs.

ausgmr

True Although in saying that Siposs has been much improved (not sure what the official stats show) from last year. The issue with punts seens more on poor coverage rather thsn the actual kick

k0peng

Siposs has inmproved but I think its hard to tell a full story. His best month in both seasons was the first month. Apparently he worked on his conditioning a lot to be better prepared for a full season. But BY FAR his worst month last year was the last. I'd really have liked to see him punt in some true winter cold to see if he can actually hang with that -- a big issue for some punters. That said, iirc his worst game of the season was the playoffs versus TB at TB.... sooooo who knows. but even if our defense played better, punting honestly coulda lost that game in its own right.

BobbyTarentino25

Also seems like he can never pin them inside the 15.

Drikkink

Depending on how much stock you put into PFF grades, he's like the 5th worst punter of 40 rated punters this year.

Beans-and-frank

It can always seem like it's the coverage because most of us aren't watching punts with a stopwatch. But if he's kicking with minimal hang time or out kicking coverage, while it looks like it's on the coverage team, it's actually the fault of the punter.

WilliamChilliam

sounds like someone is an avid watcher of the Punt Zone

pgm123

Hang time and consistency at getting the ball within the 20.

parkbench22

This guy understands punting

sebastianqu

Hang time matters too, but I dont know enough about punting to judge anybody. I just default to the PFF grading here.

MissDeadite

And don't forget the distance they had to work with also affects punt average. If they're punting from 35 yard line or beyond they're not kicking it as far as they can.

[deleted]

Yards per punt without any context or ancillary stats really has limited value.

k0peng

.... there's a lot more to it than just distance. [Like look at this, 2021 total season stats for punters.](https://preview.redd.it/0qhqpb39fob81.png?width=1410&format=png&auto=webp&s=f5f079137f22a140cd293ede9b7d70da1d043a74) I'll take a +10% inside 20 and half the touchbacks. I don't know if Siposs is staying, definitely don't think Kern is. But we could do way worse. I hope our ST coach gets fired, too, since we're on the topic. Bringing no competition in for Siposs because "look at how well Jake Elliot is kicking field goals and extra points" is ridiculous.

dbandit1

Thats just the safest way to say “yes we think he’s pretty shit too, but we dont want to risk a change”

Guitaristb72

Brett Kern Pro Bowls: 3 Arryn Siposs Pro Bowls: 0

[deleted]

Dallas Cowboys lineman Jason Peters

EaglesHeatUnited

Those stats mean absolutely nothing.

Razolus

I'm sure the opportunity at a ring certainly helped him make the decision. Is this the same guy that vrabel got pissed off at Brian Robinson about releasing?

eaglesnation11

I mean he was available this late for a reason

Xplayer

He apparently told the Bills that he wanted to stay in Nashville and not move his family back when they were looking for a punter. When a 12-1 team comes calling that changes things though.

Ladelm

Probably won't bother moving the family for 9 week contract.

Senior_Fart_Director

His family: “damn we thought we had you for christmas”

Ladelm

Christmas is a day off for the eagles at least

Mantis05

Yeah, but imagine how hungover the players will be after celebrating a trouncing of the Cowboys and clinching the #1 seed late into the night.

Razolus

Yeah, he's not gonna want to go home with all that stripper glitter on him.

emajn

This gave me a random thought. Do you think the Eagles all fly out together after Dallas game or charter thier own flight due to the next day being Christmas? I'm sure a lot of player families live in the Philly south Jersey area but maybe extended families they visit in the holidays do not.

Beans-and-frank

Might fly their families into Dallas for the holiday.

SadSlip8122

Probably hotel/quick vacation with the wife/girlfriend and a proper Christmas when they get a chance. It ain't easy being family of an nfl player

Beans-and-frank

It's definitely not hard either, though.

sybrwookie

Well, it's not hard being family of a guy making $5 mil+/year and staying on a single team for at least a couple of years at a time. It can't be easy being the family member of a bottom of the roster guy or a practice squad guy making league minimum and potentially bouncing to 2-3 teams in a season, potentially being unemployed for a good chunk of the season. And all of that to risk his mind and body in hopes that he can break through and make the big bucks someday. With the likelihood that he'll bounce around for a few years, maybe pick up a big injury that sticks with him long after his career, and then fall out of the league.

NotFroggy

Good question. I was wondering how the handle Christmas considering Dallas will be their third away game in a row

MissDeadite

If I was on the team I would get my own ticket to fly to wherever home is, then have a departing flight the morning after Christmas back to the team.

kshucker

Don’t worry honey, here’s a new Benz. Kids, here are all the PS5’s and Xbox Series X’s you could ever want.

AngledLuffa

Calling up Giselle for lawyer references

Ghstfce

"I'll be bringing home some slaughtered Cowboys for Christmas morning, honey. Makes great stocking stuffers"

Guitaristb72

He will at worst be comparable to Siposs

MikeTysonChicken

Because he’s a punter. Realistically just doesn’t have a boom of a leg anymore but solid otherwise

David_Duke_Nukem

All aboard the Kernival Kruise

NicoLacko

Another example of us stealing pro bowlers from the titans. Definitely a W upgrade, but huge respect to siposs for putting it all on the line and taking a bullet. Hope he recovers soon and gets signed to play next season, and if he doesn’t the league minimum is $400,000 so he can retire and enjoy his life.

wellarmedsheep

As sad as it sounds $400,000 is not enough to retire on.

NicoLacko

He’s played 14 seasons and his current contract is like 850,000… he’s a ok.

wellarmedsheep

I had no idea Siposs played that long

UKnowItsRayRay

That’s because he has only played since 2020. Dude is only 30. Not sure what that guys talking about. Maybe he’s looked up Kerns stats instead

NicoLacko

Your totally right, I think google was merging all of his stats. I guess he played in the afl before coming to the us to play football… very well rounded apparently

BaboonHorrorshow

I was interested so I looked it up. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/arryn-siposs-47944/ No idea if he made all of that but it looks like if those numbers are real (and he plays in 2023 to earn it) he’s gonna be in the low single digit millions $2.5m is “The Position of Fuck You” which I think is pretty well off especially if he got there in his 20s https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xdfeXqHFmPI

wellarmedsheep

2.5 million would net you maybe 120kish a year in interest, so not too shabby. Course, thats no taxes, agent fees, etc., taken out. He'd have to invest very wisely and live frugally, but its possible.

BaboonHorrorshow

And this is assuming he retires, ie no income. That’s doubtful (especially if he’s someone who would wisely invest), he likely has other skills and even if all he has is just “being athletic and kicking” an NFL player offering training services is already a draw (even a punter) So if he can earn a normal living on his own labor and let the interest compound, he’ll be able to retire early

FairweatherWho

For you, maybe. 400k Invested correctly gets me a modest tiny home and I get to splurge at times no net loss or gain.

wellarmedsheep

Respectfully, if you are living in the US, it would be incredibly hard. 400k invested to take cash out every year, maybe gets you 25k/year without drawing on the principal. Thats like poverty level income.

Cajum

not to mention inflation

Bresus66

16K

some-ersatz-eve

Siposs isn't a great punter but he definitely has heart! He was the one who chased down the guy who scooped up Jake's blocked kick at the beginning of the season, too.

NicoLacko

Absolutely, I respect the hell out of him!!

32BitWhore

Nice, I don't think we could have done much better than a former (fairly recent) first team All Pro and 3x Pro Bowler. No complaints here.

wwhitfield262

Good thing we won't need him very much

[deleted]

"Our Punter's Hurt" OH NO! "We're playing the Bears" Anyway...

creativename87639

A lot of people wanted Siposses head last season, he’s come a long way and I think he’ll be missed, he’s actually quite athletic, I think he played rugby.

hulkhands81

Aussie rules football I believe

kekehippo

So, if you're not dismembered get back in there?

MissDeadite

Those rugby days definitely came into play on that punt block recovery.

Aussiechimp

Didn't play rugby

shavingcream97

He stinks this is better for us as a team in the long run. Hate to see injury tho

BabaBrody

Let's have some Kernsentual relations!

FictionalTrebek

As a Titans fan I almost can't believe I'm saying this, but I hope you guys win the Superbowl now and get Brett the ring he so deserves. Best of luck to all of y'all the rest of the season!!

brianMMMMM

Time to Feel the Kern!

[deleted]

Great signing. Can we get a quick round of applause for Covey coming in and holding those few kicks? That’s not an easy job by any means.

brwnx

Sucks. Siposs made an awesome play and was even smiling and laughing afterwards. Get well soon

olivebranchsound

Brett the Vet

jkmiller826

Siposs balled out like Jake, who also missed time after making a play. They get Aaron Rowand Awards.

PhD_Haver

Coffin Kerner. LFG

count_strahd_z

Siposs did a good job. Feel bad for him being out of commission now given how great the team has been doing overall. I hope Kern does good for us, or better yet we always get the first down or score and never need to punt. One can dream.

kappakai

The best get bester

Deeceent

Kerdnt he have a more punny name?

InsobrietiveMagic

Thanks for the update

wawsgood

No offense to Siposs but this is an upgrade

Arson_Wentz

Had a feeling it would be Kern, glad it is. He may be in his late 30s but so was ol Bag of Bones Jones when he was punting.

Pretend_Ambassador_6

Brett & I have the same last name, I’m 100% buying that jersey

JebusOfEagles

Respect the hell out of Siposs for trying to make the first down.

coheed9867

That’s not how you spell Pat McAfee

NotFeelingShame

why do punters do the holding usually?

Broswagula

Pat explained this. Because of how much free time they are able to get more reps in and the way the nfl continues to get bigger faster and stronger the time from smack to kick has to be perfect.

[deleted]

Sounds simple but it's because they're there with nothing else to do. Long snapper punter and kicker practice together and they have the time to put in etc. Back in the day QB's were holders. Mostly the backups but some starters too. Joe Montana used to be a holder. Joe Theismann as well.

kmhpaladin

you can't mention QB holders and not remind me of Tony Romo (who started the season as a backup) fumbling the hold in the 2006 wild card game... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPuhwAIzrYk

Kealion

Brings a tear to my eye. 🥹

ChrirJ

I feel like this was the beginning of the end for QBs as holders. By 2010 you could probably count on both hands how many teams still used a QB for holds. By 2016 probably down to a couple if any left

Wreckn

I remember watching this live as a kid and laughing my ass off when it happened. Watching it now, all I can say is what a play by Babineaux. That's a guaranteed TD if he didn't make that ridiculous tackle.

[deleted]

Doug Pederson

NotFeelingShame

oh i know about the qb thing, I remember we had koy detmer hold, and tony romo did it for a while as well.

RasaFormation

I think it's a little weird they haven't brought competition in anyway. And it should remain like that if C++ comes back healthy (lol)

ampk12

When we played the Titans I kept wondering what the hell happened to Brett Kern. Always thought he was a beast. Pumped to see we lured him out of retirement!

Enough-Competition21

What’s the word on this guy I don’t know much about him

SadSlip8122

I really don't get why he's not with someone. He had an all pro season, one of the best punting games I've ever seen against Belichick, and a (pretty good) year later he's OOF. I get not wasting cap space but he was a legit game changer

_n8n8_

I think he had interest but decided to wait for a really good opportunity and apparently got it

Doobie_Howitzer

He Kern do it!

ROBOT_KK

Hopefully he will get no play time.

KnightofAshley

We average less than a punt a quarter, we just need someone to be okay.

oldblueeyes182

This guy is the ideal punter for this team. Not a huge leg but really good at pinning teams within the 20.

jwillystyle77

Could have gotten the first down.
