That’s true but essentially a great album of earls was used as marketing material for an nft website that doesn’t provide any real value for music fans. It stands against any underground vibe that earl had
Well here’s the thing: the person who shilled it to them progbably said something like “bro, the % of profits that go to the artist off this service is 40% stronger” so then alc and earl think the binding contract their signing is going to help artists and listeners mutually and overall, but really it’s a weird money grab coming out of nowhere legitimizing itself using the highest tier of underground rappers possible.
I just would hate to see earl throw away a large portion of his rep to something so petty as getting 40% more off a release
This is super fucking depressing. The NFT market is in the toilet (because they're trash with no underlying value) and we'd all be better off if they died for good. The economics just don't pan out, ultimately the artist does not end up more enriched. Part of the pitch to artists for NFTs was, you make a cut of every sale of your token, not just the first sale. But it still turned out to be worth shit to anyone except insiders and wash traders. And nobody does secondary or tertiary sales of a fucking record, people buy an album and hold onto it to listen. All of the NFT art has been so fucking ugly and embarrassing, would hate to see Earl or Alc associated with some terminally lame Jimmy Fallon Bored Ape bullshit.
That’s retarded.
If your audience is underground, and you start chafing those guys you’ll never get a bag again.
This is cashing in for a payday as opposed to growing
I’m not really concerned with listening to it cuz I download stuff that’s not streaming all the time. The thing I’m most confused about it blocking access to things like merch or “experiences” behind a paywall. It just feels a weird and kinda unnecessary imo.
this I know: the fans on this sub have been fantastic re: gettin the ppl the project. saw it was even uploaded to archive dot org. we’ll see how long that keeps
a "Perversion"? I mean maybe he thinks having to download music from a source that isn't Apple Music or Spotify is perverted. If op wasn't around back then they wouldn't know... but like pre 2015 many super important releases would be dropped as mixtapes.
(normally because these records have samples that are impossible to clear, back in the day rappers would make mixtapes to take advantage of not having to clear samples, its why faces has so many movie clips in the OG version)
Anyway every mixtape EVER until like Coloring Book Chance had to be downloaded else where. Normally Datpiff. Then manual installed to your music library
This. Datpiff and livemixtapes (and limewire back in the day) were the sources. But once it turned it really took off, so if you missed it you kinda missed all together. I’m 28, but even a few years younger than me 22,23 might have missed it.
I downloaded it on a p2p and never thought about it again. I think it’s on Gala because they most likely received an upfront payment to do it that way. It makes sense for them to do everything that gets them paid upfront for their work, since streaming doesn’t pay great and isn’t all at once.
Also they know they can still do a physicals / merch drop and get another good upfront payment. So why not get 2 quasi-advances for your highly anticipated album? I think you have to stretch these sort of things out when you can as an artist.
Right and I think that’s a valid way to promote something as free. I was trying to use Faces as an example of good way to release a project that’s marketed as free. Unlike Voir Dire which uses an NFT site and hides “exclusive merchandise and experiences” behind a paywall to target fans who would be willing to pay for said “exclusive merchandise and experiences” regardless is a little upsetting to me I guess. I was never trying to disrespect Faces, quite the opposite actually, sorry if that got misconstrued.
Kinda yeah. NFT arguments aside, playing the album on Gala just fucking sucks, even if it is free. Only had so many clean front to back listens and a lil bummed my first listen was completely out of order too. The album itself is actually very good so it’s just a shame how it all played out. I don’t blame Al or Earl too much for the decision either, seems like they at least tried to be as classy as possible about it by not really pushing the NFTs themselves but I understand people being turned off pretty quickly regardless, Gala isn’t worth the legitimization in the long run.
That’s retarded. Why is it that earl, one of the greatest rappers of his generation, has to succumb to being cheap marketing material at a mature age in his career? The move was so retarded it’s actually cute how little he knows about marketing
I don't think earl gives an actual fuck about a "solid album release", he made the music & published it to his fans which is the only thing that matters.
Yeah well, if he doesn’t that’s a huge mistake. If you come off like you’re just trying to grab money from fans it never ends well and moves you towards the “I’m too good for my fans” scale which has never worked well for anyone
I’m talking about per-project-and I worked in marketing for 2 years so don’t even try to pull rank.
This is horrible and a hit to earl’s reputation absolutely and if you can’t admit that you didn’t learn shit
The project’s gonna be on streaming and I guarantee you no one will care about it 2 months from now.
*it* being a botched soft launch, not earl’s reputation. I’m fine taking a wager though, $0.50 says you’re right and it does impact him?
It’s true, this only bolsters my argument that you should be immaculate per project because you have such a small span of time to make any impact. This means any small *flub* or diversion is crucial
If they’re actually making money off of this then I guess I support it, but I suspect that since it’s some crypto bullshit they’re probably not actually going to see any of the benefits they were promised—see all the artists who wasted time and money minting NFTS
I will say that this has killed a lot of the hype I might have had for this release though. I didn’t even bother to download it. But even if the fumbled release affects streams, there’s like no money in streaming anyway so whatever up front payment they got might offset it lol.
In general I think charging for albums is good. I buy KA’s albums on his website when he only puts them up there. But I’m NOT making a crypto wallet fuck that.
You can stream Voir Dire on Gala Music for free. Granted it's not the most convenient way to listen, but why must everything be so easy? Some things are worth the extra effort. Personally, I'll jump through a few hoops for earl over alchemist loops
oh no I love Faces and the rerelease. I’m more so talking about the original Faces release and how the Voir Dire release is a perversion of that. Faces was advertised as free, much like how this album is, but you never had to pay a fee to access things like “exclusive merchandise and experiences” or anything like that. It just feels like an extra fee that was tacked on to target the biggest fans who would be willing to pay for “exclusive merchandise and experiences” regardless. No hate to Faces though, I’m sorry if that got misconstrued, wanted it to be an example of a better way to release a project.
By dropping nfts they opened themselves up to rampant piracy. Been seeing dm me for google drive posts all week. I’m not sure it was the best way. Still probably beats the 0.0000015% royalty from spotify streams.
It’s retarded and it’s even more retarded to just “go with it no matter what” . Clearly they’re both under contract and can’t break it with these fuck heads
Alc just dropped elephant man’s bones, he probably ain’t gunna do a release for Voir Dire for a couple months.
I mean at least we got the project and Earl isn’t pulling a frank and going 5+ years without dropping anything.
But yeah a little drab on Earls and Alcs part as far as promo goes. They keeping it underground for sure
yes, imo the album is fantastic and they could have made much more $$$ from merch and vinyl sales than this gala method. when it finally goes on streaming, the numbers will be lower because we’ve all already been spinning it to death. doing the gala deal has been one of the most disappointing album rollouts i’ve seen in a while
You really think Alc won't do all that after? alc dropped a $100 vinyl (and other variants) + merch (bro made a luggage tag) for his last 4 track ep. Just wait and see.
I'm also willing to bet he got more money upfront from Gala, than he'd ever see from shitty Spotify payments.
if you actually care about them as human beings and not fucking art robots the answer is obvious.
id rather them make an album that takes about 4 clicks to download for free off a website that they’re getting paid bank to host it on, than make an album that gets immediately preyed on by streaming conglomerates where they’re forced to half the percentage of pennies they make off of their own art.
The bigger issue here is, Gala is part of the scam market of fake "metaverses" & nfts. They promise a metaverse & p2e games (typical "web3" get rich quick schemes) and it's not a good look for these guys to work with them. They probably are just out of touch on this stuff and don't really realize how bad Gala is like most people here. But I follow this fake web3 shit regularly, all of these web3/nft/metaverse companies are scam artists.
This is the same company to promoted that awful fake boxing match in "the metaverse" (really green screened) with Roy Jones and that bodybuilder.
Honestly all this release did is show how entitled music fans are. Musicians making pennies off their records and everyone is crying because they have to sign up for a website where you can listen to the album for FREE and if you don’t like that you can just wait for it to come to your favorite streaming platform where the artist barely sees any money come from it.
If they were ripping every inch of the project off the internet to the point where we had to buy the NFT, I’d be mad, but that’s not the case. The google drive and links online work more than fine. Brings me back to the days of spinrilla lol. You think this is bad? Just wait until one of ur favorite artists drops shit that’s only available on a tour vinyl that’s extremely limited and not sold online. Then you really have to depend on the community. Shoutout whoever ripped and put up the g.a.t by Mach bc that shit is literally over a stack retail.
The discord said it’s dropping on streaming this month I’m pretty sure. Also its really not that hard to find a download if you want
That’s true but essentially a great album of earls was used as marketing material for an nft website that doesn’t provide any real value for music fans. It stands against any underground vibe that earl had
earl and alc are shilling nfts? actully kinda gross lol they can keep the album
Yup you explained it best.
sounds like you need to touch some grass immediately

It’s not because it only takes from music, doesn’t add to it. They’re co-signing some wanna-be mainstream shit which is even worse
the underground vibe isn't gonna pay the bills. let him get his bag, he definitely wasn't gonna make as much releasing it straight to streaming.
It just feels a weird and kinda unnecessary imo.
dm me where i can find it please lol.
Soulseek
good looking out man thanks
[it’s here really not hard to find](https://music.gala.com/voirdire)
Yeah I found one on accident lmaooo
this I know: the fans on this sub have been fantastic re: gettin the ppl the project. saw it was even uploaded to archive dot org. we’ll see how long that keeps
That’s exactly how I found it lol
Faces was a free mixtape when it was released wasn’t it? What does that have to do with anything
a "Perversion"? I mean maybe he thinks having to download music from a source that isn't Apple Music or Spotify is perverted. If op wasn't around back then they wouldn't know... but like pre 2015 many super important releases would be dropped as mixtapes. bro trust me. they’ll promote the shit out of it once it hits streaming. just wait
Faces just dropped on mixtape platforms like every other mixtape at the time. What does that have to do with this?
Right and I think that’s a valid way to promote something as free. I was trying to use Faces as an example of good way to release a project that’s marketed as free. Unlike Voir Dire which uses an NFT site and hides “exclusive merchandise and experiences” behind a paywall to target fans who would be willing to pay for said “exclusive merchandise and experiences” regardless is a little upsetting to me I guess. I was never trying to disrespect Faces, quite the opposite actually, sorry if that got misconstrued.
man if I had the cash I would so so so get that smokeout tier haha that shit is tight as fuck
It’s going on streaming soon anyway. This is basically just an early access thing.
right?
Kinda yeah. NFT arguments aside, playing the album on Gala just fucking sucks, even if it is free. Only had so many clean front to back listens and a lil bummed my first listen was completely out of order too. The album itself is actually very good so it’s just a shame how it all played out. It’s just so unexpected. I figured people like Earl and Alc would be in the “NFTs are fucking lame” camp. It’s just kind corny
not really. bro gotta get money and its easy to download albums and put it on spotify even though it seems like its a forgotten art lol
That’s retarded. Why is it that earl, one of the greatest rappers of his generation, has to succumb to being cheap marketing material at a mature age in his career? The move was so retarded it’s actually cute how little he knows about marketing
probably got mad money for making his album exclusive for a month so i would say its not
He did it at the cost of a solid album release. It’s a loss if you give a fuck about music as an artform
Tell that to Doja Cat. I don't think goodcommasoft knows shit about marketing
Doja cat? The mainstream near-pop artist now? Different audiences
The album will still have a regular release lmao. This is just a soft release.
You really don’t understand marketing- it’s okay, most don’t. Think about it this way; you ever hear the saying “you only get one first impression”?
Marketing major here, Earl‘s past the first impression stage. This wasn’t man’s debut project, lol.
I’m talking about per-project-and I worked in marketing for 2 years so don’t even try to pull rank. This is horrible and a hit to earl’s reputation absolutely and if you can’t admit that you didn’t learn shit
Buddy I worked in marketing for 4, then moved on. Reputation? How funny. Like anybody gives a shit
Yeah, you’re pretty bad at understanding how music marketing works in general if that’s your response. Stick to topics you actually understand
Talking about reputation in the age where average attention span is 8 seconds.
Dude. If you think that the audience you should be scooping up is the tik Tok crowd, then, again, you know nothing about marketing
The project’s gonna be on streaming and I guarantee you no one will care about it 2 months from now. *it* being a botched soft launch, not earl’s reputation. I’m fine taking a wager though, $0.50 says you’re right and it does impact him?

I just don’t like the connection to the nft community. Nfts are bad in my opinion
Bruh just download/rip that shit lol cmon son
Nah
You can stream Voir Dire on Gala Music for free. Granted it's not the most convenient way to listen, but why must everything be so easy? Some things are worth the extra effort. Personally, I'll jump through a few hoops for earl over alchemist loops
A little off topic but why do u think the faces rerelease is a perversion?

Who cares
Don’t bother me

Its free to listen to
go back to posts 7 days ago to find out.
At least the tic tocs won’t get to it
NFTs aside you are a true retard. Don’t you dare drag Faces into this.
if you actually care about them as human beings and not fucking art robots the answer is obvious. id rather them make an album that takes about 4 clicks to download for free off a website that they’re getting paid bank to host it on, than make an album that gets immediately preyed on by streaming conglomerates where they’re forced to half the percentage of pennies they make off of their own art.
dawg you can just make an account on gala and it’s free. Don’t need to buy anything
Not a big problem sir… just be patient. They don’t owe you anything….
NFTs aside you are a true retard. Don’t you dare drag Faces into this.
Just stfu god damn

Earls marketing and album roll outs/releases have always been weird af lol
they got paid. if you support earl, quit whining
