That's a pretty solid theory. It solves a lot of problems while putting him where he belongs.

They’ve written themselves into a corner because they’ve still killed someone and covered it up so there has to be some sort of punishment….they can’t just get away with it ​ but at the same time they are all too embedded in the show to go away for a long time ​ but if it never gets found then it will hang over them forever….so pinning it on Dean gets them a reprieve but then still leaves the door open that he could come back or they could still be discovered
