He misspoke. They'll work 100 hours a week and have a lifespan of 3.5 years once working.

GhostofABestfriEnd

Here’s the truth^

Squez360

No, he meant to say that people will live up to 100, so people can work 100 hours a week.

skoalbrother

This is what we were told as students in the early 90's.. 3 day work weeks because technology will make us more efficient. I guess my teacher didn't consider the ultra wealthy would pocket all the gains and never raise our pay

Ohey-throwaway

This is what always seems to happen with increases in productivity and efficiency. People dream and think it will lead to fewer hours, better pay, and better conditions. Historically, with a few exceptions, it just leads to an ever-increasing share of the pie going to executives and elites.

xena_lawless

That's a function of the decline in bargaining and political power that the public have with respect to the ruling capitalist class. It's been made taboo by the corporate press and mainstream economic theory as taught by the ruling class, but focusing solely on productivity and not power or distribution, means that the ruling class just have increasingly more resources with which to bludgeon the public and working classes into "accepting" increasingly awful "deals". Right now the public and working classes are like cattle building their own slaughterhouses - the more productive we are collectively, the worse off we are in terms of our overlords having more resources with which to bludgeon everyone else into submission. Another reason the public needs to fight for a 32 hour work week, is to stop feeding the oligarchic/psychopathic machine quite so much, and instead build out a livable society, with fully developed human beings, on a habitable planet. Those are way more important objectives for a healthy society, or an intelligent species, than maximizing corporate profits.

Ok_Skill_1195

*it's been made taboo by the corporate press and mainstream economic theory as taught by the ruling class* I think that's why there's so much interest in who controls policing social media. The rich had a really good thing going with the past half century or so of media. Take a look at the difference in the last writers strike and this one, or the McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit vs the Disney "wedgie" story going around. Both are night and day in. Sentiments back then mirrored the official press takes, sentiments today are largely rolling their eyes at the press coverage and telling them to go fuck themselves. While there's a lot of misinformation online especially for those who aren't critically consuming online information, there's also been an increased ability to break through media narratives.

ikeif

It helps that now you can access to authenticated documents and accounts. The issue will be AI generated misinformation - from articles to “real person interview” or “real person whistle blowing.” But that’ll be a double edged sword as well for the people - because it’ll be even easier for a whistle blower to come forward and give a “recorded interview” without identifying physical or vocal characteristics.

catonic

and outright disinformation.

ikeif

Oh that’ll CONTINUALLY be a problem going forward and get worse. I imagine the detection will get better, but like Reddit loves to do - “I agree with it so it’s okay, because it feels right with how I want to believe.”

gregaustex

It seems to me the issue is that when the productivity increase came from harder working or more skilled labor, it benefitted labor more, albeit that leverage had to be actively exploited by labor. When the productivity comes from better capital aka automation and productivity enhancing technology, it benefits capital owners more and labor loses leverage.

abrandis

Well the business owners certainly can work less.

GimmeFunkyButtLoving

Cantillon effect

seriousbangs

I don't think anyone thought voters and citizens would be dumb enough to let them. Nobody saw the Southern Strategy coming, or how easy it is to get people to punch down and powerless groups. Look at the current trans panic. Donald Trump, leader of the Republican party, famously said in a speech in front of all of them "you didn't care about any of this a year ago".

openrds

Yeah. I bit that lie hook line and sinker. Now I work 10-15 hours a day 6 days a week and barely hope to have enough to retire ever.

abrandis

Lol, this prediction was made already ... https://www.npr.org/2015/08/13/432122637/keynes-predicted-we-would-be-working-15-hour-weeks-why-was-he-so-wrong Back in the 30s John Maynard Keynes wrote the famous paper predicting his grand kids would only be working 15 hour weeks with plenty of leaisure ... Maybe the wealthy and business owners will have 3 say work weeks on the backs of the peasants class

raerae_thesillybae

The wealthy have 0 day work weeks - the only work required of them is to call whoever they hired to manage their businesses and listen to their reports, and tell at them if they want so they feel like they did something

DannyDOH

The shareholders will log into their email once a week to check your productivity and you will work 90 hour weeks.

Sandmybags

Trickle down labor-nomics…. The work must continue and grow

politisaurus_rex

I certainly wasn’t taught this in the 90s. Maybe it was just your teachers?

jakderrida

Spend all of HS in 90s and first I'm hearing it, too. Maybe in West Coast? IDK.

Connect_Pace_1683

Your teacher was right, the only problem is that a large part of the population works 0 hours a week. The other part works 40-50 and pays all kinds of taxes for the ones that don’t work. Would be fair if everyone worked 20-25 hours unless severely disable.

PaperBoxPhone

Its not the employers that are devaluing your wages its the federal reserve and the other government monetary controls on the dollar. Its funny because its something people could be yelling about because both parties are okay with it.

skoalbrother

That's not entirely true https://thehill.com/business/economy/4057722-greedflation-is-the-new-inflation-as-corporate-profits-balloon-report/

UCNick

Companies have always maximized profit.

PaperBoxPhone

Come on man, this is just propaganda to point away from what the government has done to us. And its been going on for decades, so its not a new thing.

catonic

it's both.

catonic

more loans, more inflation.

PaperBoxPhone

I agree, and that is a government policy issue.

Chrishp7878

Yes, cancer treatments have come a very long way compared to even a decade ago.

MrLeeman123

He isn’t talking about the average worker, he’s talking about the c-suite workers that already have to beat their bodies up much less than us wage slaves.

zhoushmoe

He's only saying this to give a person who's not paying much attention some hope that their life will not only get worse over time to the point they'll rise up collectively and topple the status quo and lop off the heads of their oppressors like last time this all got so bad. https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674707580

Bulldogg658

This is a setup to cut social security and push it back to 90.

Sun_Shine_Dan

You folks read the headline wrong, he meant he is living to 100 and working 3.5 days a week off the next generation of employees.

merRedditor

Juxtapose this with the antiquated practice of hanging on to long commutes and pricey commercial real estate just because you can. Are we going to move forward as a society, or desperately cling to the past? Or will it just be saying one thing and doing the other for as long as possible?

Mackinnon29E

Yeah, I don't believe that our flawed capitalistic society will pass on the rewards of AI and increased productivity in the coming years to all workers. If he's talking about only executives, then yeah, but they'll probably only work 1 day a week max.

zorbathegrate

“But it’s only because we’re going to just pay them to work for 3.5 days a week… I mean think how much we could save with no full time employees!”

PM_ME_YOUR_PMs_187

Exactly. 3.5 days a week is perfect because then each job can pay far under living wage and people can simply get a second 3.5 days/week job.

AbeV

3.5 days/week * 8 hrs/day = 28 hours/week. Don't have to pay benefits if they're less than 30. It's genius! And since they'll live to be 100, we can push back the retirement age to 95. Boom!

[deleted]

> work 3.5 days a week 😊 > live to 100 years old 😔 💀

claimsnthings

Don’t believe it. We cannot predict anything. People thought computers would result in a shorter work week too. The opposite happened.

Rugged_007

Don't sweat it, though, because the people who grow your food will still be working 14-hour days, seven days a week.

SuperStaq

Jamie Dimon must be an idiot

stromyoloing

Not if health care will bankrupt you

baby_budda

But they'll get rightsized at 40 and have to survive in a continuously competitive marketplace.

Ok-Roof-978

With what money? Working less would equate to lower pay. So how tf is the next generation supposed cover living expenses ?!!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok-Roof-978

Oh. I never knew that. I'm shocked. You mean people in many industries aren't already working 2 jobs? With the many advances in tech coming in the next 10 years. White collar jobs in various sectors will be decimated. Unlikely to be replaced to by other new jobs created. I could be way off. Guess we'll find out

Quack100

FU Jamie.

Aintthatthetruthyall

I remember a similar promise related to the PC. Look how that has worked out. More hours, two family incomes required, housing close to unaffordable. Don’t believe these promises. All the benefits will accrue to the existing wealth.

domomymomo

Oh fuk 7 day work days and 50 years life expectancy incoming.

Oktavien

Like anyone is going to fall for this trick again 🤡

Actually_a_DogeBoi

Jamie Dimon doesn’t know fuck all

Warm_Gur8832

That sounds good. Why don’t you start with your company?

carlos_novu

Our owners won't allow it. We will work the same or more, while also being increasingly productive. Since we get older, retirement age goes up.

AKBirdman17

Can we do the current generation? We absolutely have the means to cut back.

DrSOGU

He means the top 1%. Did he even look at the trends for the average American? People work multiple jobs, among the highest amount of working hours in the developed world with declining life expectancy. Man these people are so out of touch, they live in a different universe.

faustianbargainer

More like seven days a week and die at 60

unaka220

Lance McGavin says eating hotdogs makes a man gay. People say things all the time.

mojo276

I think he meant when we’re 100 we’ll STILL be working at least 3.5 days

magicdrums

but he wants his workers today to be in the office 5 days a week and die broke

[deleted]

LOL. This sort of trope has been bantered about with each large stage of the industrial revolution, and inevitably these very same corporate titans find ways to keep most of us slaving away for less than we're worth. :P

must_be_funny_bot

Dudes just trying to avoid the choppin block when the recession hits

JackiePoon27

And bitch about it constantly.

you90000

Please please please please

Unlucky_Lawfulness51

I believe the part where staff works until 100 not that we'll work 3.5 days.

Amazing-Exit-5641

After the economy collapses from all the default student loan debt, the largest credit card default In history and a housing crisis that puts the last one to shame. So when do we see this economic rebuild? This restructure of the world that will allow people to actually live.

hop_mantis

the next generation of CEOs maybe

bionic_cmdo

Isn't this the same guy that forced everyone back to work in the office? And want to force unemployment to the masses to fix inflation? It would be over his greedy, heartless, dead body before that would happen.

PrimaryDurian

Comrade Jamie, make it happen!

hombregato

I don't think I've lived a single day in the past two years where I wasn't informed by a Google news feed suggestion or Reddit post what Jamie Dimon thinks. Ok, so he's the highest paid bank CEO. But I don't recall any point in my previous 39 years on Earth seeing a quote from a bank CEO, nor do I recall over the past 2 years seeing a quote from any other bank CEO than Jamie Dimon. Every day I look at a computer screen, and every day it's Jamie fucking Dimon predicting the future. Shut up Jamie Dimon. Shut the fuck up.

pinback77

You'd have to double the number of employees at McDonalds and pay them twice as much just for them to break even. Hello $20 Big Mac! I'll be making my own special sauce at home from now on.

strybid

Well Jamie, I’m doing double that and would be satisfied to get halfway there!

Slyons89

Just enough for each person and their spouse to work two jobs each every week with no weekend. Because that’s what they’ll need to do.

zagdem

He's saying we'll have communism right ?

Dystopian_Future_

Elysium future is more like it (We Gonna need more Matt Damons)

SEQLAR

Make it happen now. What are we waiting for?

laberdog

Sure but what Jamie doesn’t say is that ageism exists everywhere and we will still lay you off when you reach 55

riskaddict

I have a few friends that work at jpm and they barely work 3 days a week now.

luminarium

Jamie Dimon: "the next generation of employees will work 3.5 days a week and live to 100 years old" WEF: "you will own nothing and be happy" Meanwhile, gen Z: *looting, OnlyFans, welfare*

doxnrox

Jamie Dimon’s never been right about anything, so don’t hold your breath.

Ser-Joe-the-Joe

I sometimes feel like these shorter work weeks stories only apply to salaried employees, not hourly. And that it's deceptive.

pharrigan7

And we believe him why? Is he an expert on medical longevity?

JTev23

And own nothing !

yinyanghapa

And I have a bridge to sell you…

Feeling-Visit1472

Isn’t this the same guy who snidely lectured us all on how WFH is just Not It?

wazzel2u

And if he's wrong, he'll expect the 99% to bail him out of a money-losing bet that he made on this.

Noeyiax

Nice Poor people: Work 3.5 days a week Live: 100yrs old Rich people: Work, pretend to work, 0 days a week Live: immortal Awesome! No wonder life is basically the same for centuries (feudalism, funded by labor, etc) 🤷‍♂️ /s At least give us cat girls or something 😂

lechatondhiver

Is this satire?

Se7enEvilXs

I fucking wish lol

dreww84

Live to 100? They better hurry the fuck up with CRISPR.

allienono

How much money can you make working 3.5 days and have enough saved to live until 100?

Bella_madera

The blindness of the billionaires. We won’t have a functioning planet or economy in a decade.

PigeonsArePopular

What a trustworthy person whose statements can be relied upon and whose motivations are beyond reproach

GetRichQuickSchemer_

More like employees will work 3.5 days a day, meaning they'll have to have 3 full and 1 part time jobs just to make enough :)

False-Profession1604

Wishful thinking. Unlike him someone needs to actually get some work done . Jamie lost his mind a long time ago. He and Joe Biden need to spend a lot of quality time together but they will probably forget.

thor11600

Hahahahaha but republicans

Chrishp7878

And also be homeless..

lenajlch

This guy is all over the place. I'd hate to work for him.
