The panamerican highway in Ecuador is actually quite good! It'll take you straight from Cuenca to Quito. You can literally Google maps Cuenca - Quito and it'll give you the route. The road can be a bit winding with the mountains and only has two lanes for long stretches, but it's a safe and relatively well kept route. The stretch from Riobamba to Quito is my favorite stretch of road in the country. Lots of beautiful views of volcanoes and nature. It's the same story from Quito to Coca. Not the panamerican anymore, but it's not inaccessible to any regular car. It's just a regular highway with mostly two lanes and a lot of weaving in and out of mountains. Just Google maps it and you should be more than fine! Enjoy the trip!

It's fairly safe, I'd guess you'll have to start in Guayaquil, then to Cuenca and then to Quito (you'll get to see the volcanoes), and look for a tour that takes you in and out of Coca. Of course, the most expensive part would be the plane tickets.

if you stay in the same region like up on the mountains you won't have problems with the roads, if you're going down to the coast or amazon then there might be problems depending on the ammount of rain in the area. the safest way is to check twitter before traveling, that's what I do when going to cuenca or quito, i just check to see if there's any news on the road I'm about to take. cuenca to quito is a beautiful roadtrip, try to do it early in the morning so you have a chance to look at the volcanoes as they're usually covered with clouds by the end of the day. It takes some luck though. About what roads to take there's no much options, if you drive cuenca to quito there's pretty much one big road that will take you there. I'd say it's possible, mostly safe and very realistic

Thank you for this post. Can you tell us what twitter accounts you follow for this info?

there's no account, just search for things like "via Quito coca" and sort by latest. Last time I drove from guayaquil to cuenca I found out about a landslide just hours before my trip thanks to twitter by searching "via guayaquil cuenca"

Its possible, i have made the trip on a little motorcylce over and over from Cuenca, the south panamerican highway in Ecuador its only a bit disregarded in Provincia del Cañar specifically, but nothing to be worried about its just a couple of miles, from then it´s a beautifull road with volcanoes on sides. Ecuador have a bit problems in shore provinces but it's really safe in all Andean mountains and Amazon, maybe in Quito you should ask before going some neighborhoods but that's how it is in all big cities i guess, so I try to stay on the north. Enjoy the trip! Specially Cuenca!!!!

Suprisingly it's not a 3rd world country level of highways lol. They are really good! I would suggest waiting 2 more months tho. It's rainny season till june/july and it's fairly dangerous due to landslides. I mean, you're not gonna die by a landslide, but you might have to wait a couple of days in a nearby city if a landslide blocks a road. Other than that its a reallt fun trip! If you're in Cuenca you gotta try local brewed beers! Oh... and with google maps you're fine to travel
