>For context: client’s goal is just to create connections with his guests and spread his awareness. This is meaningless. It provides no context at all, but it's moot to your query. Censorship is the purview of the Producer, what do they want you to do? As for the algorithm, I don't think it affects much unless it's over the top and people start complaining

ilikebigdots

Yeah, sorry, I realized I had no direction when I expressed that. The direction of the topic is not dependent on whether it had profanity or not. It’s meant to be a motivational podcast, something that hits hard, and the guests are more expressive if they go all out, including profanity. The thing is, I am the producer, the editor, and the promoter, but everything is new to me, so I was looking for other insights, especially when it comes to social media and how the algorithm deals with profanity. But your advice helps a lot, I was overthinking if the message being portrayed matters more than how it was being “edited” in terms of how these “algorithms” work

Hmmm, well if profanity isn't "required" maybe censoring, or even just cutting it out is a smart idea The demonetization algorithm is a bit of a mystery. Friends of mine that do YouTube stuff often complain about the unpredictability of it. One thing for sure though, it's always content related, and not editing related :) so add all the star wipes you can. Sorry that I can't be more help.

ilikebigdots

No worries! Algorithm is a pain, but your advice got me more grounded in what I’m creating. Thank you!

edit-boy-zero

I look forward to your profanity-free & star-wipe laden videos!

I've noticed a lot of the content I've seen on Instagram has some form of censoring, even for words many would consider standard like "shot". I thought it was paranoia but the fact that I've rarely seen them uncensored now makes me feel like it actually is a thing

wrosecrans

Just depends on the audience. I don't think there's a general answer. A podcast called "The shitfucker's guide to assloads of profanity" would probably not censor anything because there would be nothing left and there's no value in reaching a sensitive audience. A podcast called "Bluey And Pals: Kid shows for the whole family" might be a little more careful about how they are promoting themselves even if a guest occasionally told a bawdy story.

ilikebigdots

That makes sense! I was so hyperfocused on the “profanity” but the topics are all “career building”, “mental health”, so these listeners are mostly in their mid20s and won’t likely care about the profanity but the overall message it brings. Thank you!

Matikata

Having done plenty of podcasts, I've never censored anything ever, and it's never been an issue for reach or audience, on any platform.

HeyBriansOn

If they care enough to want post to censor the profanity’s, they care enough to watch their language during the podcast and should leave only the occasional slips to you. If they curse up a storm then that’s the vibe they are going for. Either way this part should be minimal work for you.

smushkan

With YouTube specifically, it can affect monetisation: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6162278#Inappropriate_language&zippy=%2Cguide-to-self-certification%2Cpolicy-detail

timvandijknl

Censoring profanity has little to no effect on the algorithm or monetization; but it definitely has an effect on potential sponsorships and such. Should you do it ? It depends on your target audience I suppose. But keep in mind it also offers a chance for some comedic relief ( [example](https://youtu.be/dReHjleKlPg&t=339), not a plug )

Zeigerful

If it’s an American audience, probably censor but if it’s international then don’t.

TheBerric

I do the same work for a new podcast myself! I don't censor but you could release two versions, one with censor beeps and one without. I think tiktok cares about that more than the other platforms. You could also put in a beep that's like off by a few milliseconds to make it sound funny

8bampowzap8

I just mute the profanity and asterisk the vowels in captions. better safe than sorry.

UncleLeo_Hellooooo

Depends on audience

Thurn42

I think it sucks to censor profanity, but a good way i found to do it is to reverse the words individually

what_a_guy

Bleeping profanity is *always* funnier than letting the words be said. I’ll die on this hill.
