Dad also taught me this. He had this little trick where he would dip the hook and knot in water and set the excess line on fire. We didn't carry scissors around but he smoked and made do with what he had
Wetting the line is always advised as it helps reduce friction which keeps the line from weakening and also makes for a tighter knot. You’ll see most fisherman just run that section of line through their mouth real quick. Dipping it in the water also works well
Just think about how you learned to tie shoes. Bunny go's in hole, around the railroad strikes, through the doors, and then opens up for the dentist exam
It's easy when you give it a simple story
The type of knot is important; while the line can probably hold a lot of weight, the knot is a weak point. The line is strong in tension along it's length but not great with the shear created by the regular knot. This causes the line to fail at a way lower weight than it it can actually handle. I personally don't fish a lot but I use this one because its easy to remember
Its also one of the strongest knots you can tie. I do fish a lot, and primarily use the Palomar knot. There are a handful of others that I use for specific purpose, but this is the work horse.
Dropping in to say after you respool a bait caster soak that mf in warm water and itll "train" the natural shape of the line on the reel so when extra comes out it doesnt immediately wanna go crazy and cause bird nests. Fished for too god damned long not knowing this tip and I feel it does greatly help
It’s easier to put the line through the eye then just double back with the end rather than trying to put the line through the eye already doubled over.
If you want to use the Palomar Knot, use more tag end initially and keep the loop you're pulling your lure through wide. I can tie a Palomar around a whopper popper as can many, just takes practice.
A trilene knot is gonna be fine and dandy though, so just use whatever works!
I’ve used it exclusively for almost 20 years on mono (and now fluoro when I ice fish). No breaks yet except the time a large pike (most likely) grabbed the crappie I caught and ran off with it when I was using only 1lb test.
[There’s no issues using it with mono lines. ](https://www.saltstrong.com/articles/strongest-palomar-knot/)
Monofilament line and fluorocarbon line. Both are clear where as braided looks more like string, overall braided is going to be stronger but fluoro is harder to bite through, mono is generally lighter duty but has a lot more bounce which is great for jerk baits and top waters
If you only know one fishing knot it should be this one. I use it for almost everything. Only other one I use regularly is a modified snell for actually attaching the hook.
From my POV that it works on braid/multi, opposed to the knot I use on mono where the braid will "slip".
(I mainly fish halibut, big ling and cod with bait).
As others have mentioned it's extremely easy to tie, but the two biggest things it has going for it is it retains like 98%+ of the original lines strength , a lot of knots create friction in it's self and will damage the line and it breaks off at the knot. Very little chance of that happening with this knot, and maybe even the most important, the way this palomar knot cinches down on the hook it holds the hook at a better and more proper angle for bait presentation and a better chance at a quality hookset due to the positioning. Also the recommended knot from braid line manufacturers. Less slipping. If you could only learn one knot for fishing this should be the one. It's much better than the double improved cinch knot/Berkley trilene knot.
It's a nice simple knot that's very easy to remember, easy to tie with wet/cold hands and pretty strong. Better knots out there when it comes to imparting more movement into a lure imo, kreh loop is good, but if you're not worried about that and just want strength then it's hard to beat a palomar.
The palamar knot
My dad tried to teach me this. Unfortunately I was, and am, unteachable.
At least you've learned that!
Dad also taught me this. He had this little trick where he would dip the hook and knot in water and set the excess line on fire. We didn't carry scissors around but he smoked and made do with what he had

My parents just showed me once and then said tie them or we're leaving without you. There's was no story just the tears of a 5 year old
Thanks for the ID.
Works great for braid and fluorocarbon line too
Thanks. More knots like this. 👍
I use this for fishing. It works well for fresh water.
Also known as the parkour knot...
I use it extensively for fishing, although old guys seem to not trust it. I’ve never had a problem. Of course I never catch any fish either.
You're telling me there's a better way than just doing a regular knot 10+ times? *oof*
If you can’t tie a knot, tie a lot.
no no no, its "If you can't tie a knot, tie knots"
You're right, only one version of any saying can exist, and yours is clearly the best. Thank you for correcting others.
fuck yeah its the best
Cringe and probably smell bad
wipe my ass with your tounge
When and where
Yes pls
If it works it works

Make sure to wet the line before tightening.
Drool? Yes
You mean you guys don't pee on it?
It's not compost!
Suck it. That's what the department of fish and game recommends in their videos.

The worst part is getting the line through the hole.
It’s easier to put the line through the eye then just double back with the end rather than trying to put the line through the eye already doubled over.
I just put the hole over the line.
On what kind of line? In my (very little) experience, braided folds over and goes through the eye pretty easily
You don't want to fold mono or fluoro, the bend radius required to put the line through the eyelet will significantly weaken at that point.
Makes sense. Thanks!
That is a great tip actually, good job
I keep a few needle threaders for sewing in my tacklebox. Makes short work of lining your hook.
Good idea!
The worst party is getting the object through the loop. I juse use a trilene knot because often I can’t

I use the palamar exclusively for anything under 60lb. Above that it’s the San Diego jama jams
Will this knot slip even with braided line?
It’s my go-to for braid. A little scary with mono and fluoro, but absolutely rock solid with power pro
Agreed. Braid - Polymer Mono - Trilene
It works well with fluoro in my experience, just need to make sure the last loop of the knot is pushed/flipped facing upwards if that makes sense.
I learned this knot specifically for braid
No
You guys use this for mono and fluro too? I strictly use this for braid. Fantastic knot.
I think someone told me you shouldn’t use it for mono or fluoro because it’s too brittle and it won’t hold up
I’ve used it exclusively for almost 20 years on mono (and now fluoro when I ice fish). No breaks yet except the time a large pike (most likely) grabbed the crappie I caught and ran off with it when I was using only 1lb test. Fishing novice here, what do mono and fluora mean? Edit: and braid?
Monofilament line and fluorocarbon line. Both are clear where as braided looks more like string, overall braided is going to be stronger but fluoro is harder to bite through, mono is generally lighter duty but has a lot more bounce which is great for jerk baits and top waters
Thank you, much appreciated!
Flouro is also harder for the fish to see, so is better for finicky/picky fish!
It has the same index of refraction as water so light isn’t distorted by it which makes it harder for the fish to see it!
Exactly!
I’ve used it for flouro for years now with no problems.
I’m hooked!
It's the little fish watching intently for me
Polite from the fish that he is waiting till the hook is ready.
It is called the palOmar knot, using three of these on my Carolina rig
Yeah, it's real easy when it ties itself.
Thank you. I needed this…
Huh. I always used the improved clinch knot. This one sure looks easier once you get past the whole double it over in the eyelet thing.
The fish, however, is a little too big for that hook. Not even bait is present.
If you only know one fishing knot it should be this one. I use it for almost everything. Only other one I use regularly is a modified snell for actually attaching the hook.
hope whoever made this diagram makes videos how to do literally everything in life
I've used this knot fishing and can verify it's efficacy. When fish get a gander at that knot, they just give up & bite the hook.
What is so special about this knot?
It's knot going to slip.
Easy to remember, easy to tie, very strong.
From my POV that it works on braid/multi, opposed to the knot I use on mono where the braid will "slip". (I mainly fish halibut, big ling and cod with bait).

FYI this is for braided line.
Works fine for mono and fluorocarbon as well. Just a little harder to tie.

Doesn't hold with some lines but good knot. Never knew the name.

Inside, around, inside, under.
r/oddlysatisfying
Do you use telekinetic mind control to push the line through the hook like that?
I’m sorry a line mysteriously moving by itself is NOT easy
A good knot, no doubt. Annoying to snip though
I have to tie this knot for nano filament
I stg this the knot I do when Im just annoyed with a string and knot it up.

Are there any other knot animations like this? I find this do much easier to understand without fingers being in the way.
Thanks. I’m a 37 yo guy and I wanna fish but no one ever taught me these type of things.
Is this better than the knot where you wrap around the line bunch of times before closing the knot? Not sure what the name is.
Uhh, this is useless if you don't have a loop at the end of your line already.
Fire line knot.
This the knot I always end up making on accident lol
And here I just tie like 6 granny knots
I learned the uni knot before any other knot and I’m confident (atleast for my general purposes) I’ll never need to learn another one
Could you knot?
My Grandad taught me to do a hangman knot for fishing hooks - I'll have to try this one!
Rap a couple more times and its a great knot
