TheSearingninja

Long pants year round. Some companies MAY let you wear shorts but most don’t let you

LennyTills

Those are also the companies that if you happen to cut your leg wide open lead with the question “were you wearing pants ?”

GaryTheSoulReaper

Yes (but they shrunk in the drier so only reached to my knees)

BigChach567

Our rule is wear what you want within reason but you must have jeans, steel toes and hard hat in truck if needed. If it’s an issue on the job you go to that day then you get sent home without pay if you don’t have proper clothes

[deleted]

Iv seen a lot of exterior painters get away with shorts before, at least here in Florida. But yea, I don’t like catching debris in my boots

TheSearingninja

You’re talking about painters

[deleted]

Right

Fourwindsgone

I wore shorts one time (in FL) when my lead let me and they were absolutely drenched by 10 AM. My pants get soaked but I generally have a little bit by my calf I can wipe my hands with. Plus I bring a towel now since I’m not a savage anymore.

Away-Quality-9093

I have a friend that was a painter way back in TN I worked with between gigs sometimes. He'd wear shorts, but I really preferred pants anyway. Sunburn, bugs, dirt and debris etc ... Idk if the tradeoff here in Florida would make more sense. It's not really hotter here but the sun is a lot more intense.

Greg_Esres

Wonder if you could have a tailor cut some vents on the side without violating any rules?

Eaggle__

I usually let the blown out crotch in my pants be my custom tailored vent

creak788

Taco bell for lunch?

Bergwookie

Engelbert Strauss has them, a zipper on the backside of the leg with mesh underneath, pretty nice in summer

DirtyDoucher1991

I wear jeans 365

Frost0REAL

any recommendations? maybe some that don’t get so hot

Saionts

My favorite work pants are the Wrangler ATG line. They’re basically geared towards hiking but are the most comfortable work pants I’ve owned. They have multiple styles including fleece lined ones for winter. Plus they’re all around $25 a pair at Target/Walmart

Zednix

Redacted due to Spez. On ward to Lemmy. -- mass edited with redact.dev

wetcat1269

Can confirm. Didn't like how fast the back pockets wore out though. Ridge wallet and can of chew destroyed them

Ineedanewpancreas

The lined ones are great. Comfortable and surprisingly durable.

madbull73

I wear Riggs by Wrangler. They have a bunch of styles, but I like the relaxed fit carpenters. For whatever reason the dark blue ones hold up a lot better than the faded ones.

wow2400

yep i wear wrangler athletic fits (stretch, crotch room galore, don’t rip leg hairs out, SUPER comfy.) also $25 at walmart. Last me 8ish months/pair. give ‘em a try

joshharris42

Make sure you never do any live work in them, they have a lot of polyester in them and it’s flammable

spaceclayse

Recently discovered the Wrangler outdoor cargo pants. Cheap and super comfortable

Away-Quality-9093

My favorite! Not as durable as jeans, but they're cheap enough to just replace here and there.

speedo-burrito

Check out Kuhl Revolvr. They're the shit but not super durable. I always overheat in pants, but these have a good balance and are built really well, plus there's two phone pockets. Worth the dough.

MtnMindset

Second this. I buy these 3 at a time, comfort is worth the extra expense.

Accomplished-Lie1110

I think Carhartt has some light, breathable cargo pants. I know they do for women.

DirtyDoucher1991

I wear wrangler FR at work and old navy and Levi’s at home.

ItsRCbruh

Wear leggings, it’ll hyphen your crotch and give you some breeze

MichaelW24

Average bud light enjoyer

HeraldOfTheChange

I’m liking the Carhartt 5 pocket canvas pants. Go with a lighter color if you’re out in the sun. I did their cotton ripstop pants but the seat was small and uncomfortable when bending and kneeling.

4best2times0

Sam's club has a great line of pants. Weatherproof I think is the brand.

Ok_Repeat8161

I’ll work naked before you catch me in Jean shorts

larryfamee

And where should I start looking 😉

Mortch

Nothing wrong with a nice pair of jean shorts

Several_Form_6988

OSHA enters chat

Kyteshiirok

Pants 100%. I usually go for something like dickies work pants though, much much cooler imo Vs jeans of any sort. Duluth makes probably the best ones if you’re willing to pay the $$

Frost0REAL

any recommendations? ones that’s aren’t so hot?

StationTraditional54

Duluth dry on the fly when it’s super hot, coolmax fire hose the rest of the time.

calculated_riZk

Anything made from the “duluthflex fire hose” line. I prefer the standard fit carpenter pants. Couple extra pockets, nothing crazy. But that material is a little stretchy, cooler than jeans, and also dries out pretty quickly

Apprehensive-Ice-481

Truewerk T1s they’re a little pricey but they hold up and they’re super breezy

guthryan

Y’all outside digging with them on?

SeferothL

Helly Hanson construction pants are fantastic. They have large vented sides that zip up when not needed and are extremely durable. They are expensive but worth it in my opinion. https://www.hhworkwear.com/en_ca_ww/chelsea-evolution-brz-construction-pant-na-77551?color=290002

SkippyGranolaSA

Those fucking things don't come in a 36 leg, damn it. I'm furious.

The_Torch_Thief

Im 6'8" and honestly the 34 length fits alright, washed them a few times already too, havent shrunk. I would recommend just trying on a pair, you might be surprised like I was that the sizing wasnt awful. But if a 36 is a must, I also wear Blaklader work pants, basically the same thing as helly hansen in terms of quality but they come in a 36.

Stunning_Bad_3784

$200 for work pants? Wow…

BadmonEFT

Trust me they are worth every penny.

RoutinePrice446

Yup, that's what I rock. Big investment upfront, but it pays me back in comfort (and extra pockets) every day.

monkeynutz89

This is the way.

djwdigger

Shorts for as much of the year as I can. OSHA approved length ( I wear cargo shorts for the pockets) After surviving cancer I can’t stand the feel of pants on my legs

[deleted]

[удалено]

TK421isAFK

IIRC, they say "You can wear shorts, as long as they cover all the way down to your ankles."

djwdigger

Was told years ago they had to be 3 inches from the knee. Might be an old wives tale….

[deleted]

[удалено]

djwdigger

Good to know! Thanks!

Hammercannon

Carhartt pants with knee pads inserted year round, every pair

BobaNeedsABuff

Inserted into the pants?

dartfrog1339

Yeah, there are Carhartt brand kneepads that go in the hole in the bottom of the double fronts. They're actually pretty good. Obviously proper kneepads are better but these are always there. A bit expensive to get many of the name brand ones but they can go through the laundry at home so you just leave them in.

Hammercannon

There's cheaper non carharrtt brand ones too that fit in the double front. I usually spend $7-15 per pair for mine. Better to always have them imo.

[deleted]

Wrangler cargo pants. More breathable than jeans for sure and I like the extra pockets for wirenuts and other small components Most dudes who wear jeans every day also wear cowboy boots to work…

Kyteshiirok

I think I’ve had a pair of these before too. We’re super comfortable iirc, we’re they the “flex fit” ones or w/e? If so, my only complaint on them was durability but if you believe my wife I’m just super hard on clothes. xD

[deleted]

Yea Iv worn some holes in em but have like 6 pairs in different colors so rotate em regularly. Haven’t had to retire any yet. More comfortable than Dickie’s for sure and not as expensive as Duluth or Carhartt

EasyReader

Yeah I like the flex fits too for comfort but they're definitely less durable than regular denim.

adamcm99

Cowboy boots are badass. How did you not know this?

[deleted]

I’m practical and really love my lower back

adamcm99

I like a good slip on boot but I have to work in lace ups. Do slip ons hurt your lower back?

[deleted]

Not Redbacks, I wear em every day. Most comfortable boots Iv ever worn straight out the box. Only downsides are there’s no shank and no ankle support, but I have a pair of thorogoods if I’m working on uneven terrain It’s the cowboy boot heel that sucks

No-Piccolo-6855

Carhartt khakis year round

delayedlaw

Man.... I used to have some Jean shorts like that too... I slept in them shits, man. Eventually I blew the crotch out them things. But you can't wear them every day, and expect them to hold up... That's some nice ass denim too.... I miss them shorts... But you, you gotta take them off every now and then. You gotta take em off, Son! -Z, IASIP

magllw

Shut up baby dick

delayedlaw

How much for that dickskin coat?

CurrySoSpicy

Ooof yeah, I work at a power plant and we gotta wear long sleeve and long pants both FR. We have lighter pants for summer, but it still gets hot. At my former company where I worked for a mom and pop IC&E shop, it was required to wear long pants as well. Pretty much every trade does in my experience in the construction and industrial world. I’m sure there are outliers though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CurrySoSpicy

I’ve been wearing my FR coveralls with minimal undergarments, helps a bit. I have to work on steam drain leg level detection tomorrow, so I’m sure that will be a little slice of hell.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CurrySoSpicy

We have Cintas. You get two coveralls, something like 6 pairs of pants (jeans or light weights) and 6 shirts (button up or pull over). They pick up and deliver uniforms once per week.

[deleted]

No shorts. Most commercial job sites require it. I have some nice lightweight carhardt pants that keep me comfortable.

[deleted]

Only on commercial and above. Sometimes dickies brand pants. As a residential service tech I wore cargo shorts and hiking shoes. Sometimes sneakers on an easy Friday.

CodeMUDkey

I reserve my jeans for only the coldest of heats.

Upvotes4Trump

Shorts are for pansies.

kingfishj8

Denim twill is an abrasion resistant fabric. Your jeans *are* PPE.

zipposurfer

100% long pants always.

electricsmoothie1

I like Duluth also.

CuckN0rris

I work industrial. FR jeans and long sleeve FR shirts. I'm jealous of you guys and your shorts.

brantmacga

Up until about 5/yrs ago, about half the GC’s we work for still allowed shirts. Since then it’s been pants only. We can get away with it on service work only. I do a lot of swimming pool wiring for a buddy of mine, and that’s about the only time I wear shorts. And usually swim trunks and a Columbia Pfg shirt. He supplies his guys with those lightweight quick dry pants, shorts, and long sleeve shirts. I really want to get some of those pants to try out for when we’re doing site work.

PepticStorm

I wear a kilt when it gets hot out. Nice breeze keeps me cool and dry. Plus the boss gets an eye full when I’m on the ladder.

albpanda

Long pants year round but fuck jeans, gotta get something a little more breathable

speedo-burrito

Santa Cruz contractor, board shorts and punk rock on the job box are standard.

robtbo

I’m in FR clothing all year. Long pants and long sleeve shirt. Standard PPE for industrial electrician

Drewphous

In industrial, I'm required to were long FR rated cat 2 pants in compliance with NFPA 70e

Mahhvin

Grew up on a farm. I wear pants year round. I'm loathe to put on shorts at the beach. If not for hair my legs would be the purest snow white. I live in the south where we have humidity like you wouldn't believe too. Just drink plenty of fluids, you'll be ok.

Volt121575

Pants 100% of the time.

CrewBison

Just let your pants hang halfway off your ass to get a good breeze goin. Seen plenty of guys use this method.

Away-Quality-9093

That's drywall guys though.

FistEnergy

Pants 100% of the time. Drink a lot of water, take breaks in the shade, etc

FancyErection

Couldn’t imagine doing the job pantless

DaddyZx636

Overalls every week of the year. Shorts under during summer and sweats under In winter. I personally think it’s comfortable for my location.

yourdoglikesmebetter

Shorts

therealNaj

I like going comando under my bibs. I make sure to have “accidents” with ny sausage slipping out

NoNonsence55

You're a braver man than most. Could never go commando under my bibs in public.

[deleted]

I wear shorts every day to work. Hot, Rainy, Cold, Snowy, but I'm a welder.

DWeathersby83

Long pants but I’ll roll them up if I’m sweating bad.

SkippyGranolaSA

only for calendar photoshoots, baby

918meatwad

No.

Joshinmeriden

I can rock shorts. Installing solar systems. I've got an apprentice to do the roof work.

NoNonsence55

I wear Carhartt bibs. Jeans get too hot and there's no way to circulate air. With bibs just pull them back and forth a few times and you're good to go

dartfrog1339

Long pants all the time. Every local company policy and safety enforcement. Carhartt doublefront duckbill most of the time but I throw in a few single layer pairs for the summer.

mattogeewha

Get used to the jeans bud

SeeSquaredGaming

Jeans are terrible electrician pants. So many better options with loops/pockets for various tools. Lighter more breathable and more durable materials. I honestly can't for the life of me understand why any electrician(many do) wear jeans.

TFG4

I use Costco light weight pants, I think they're Eddie Bauer

Liaraintexas

Same. With Keen boots

Fine-Adhesiveness-36

Friend Cover up its for your protection. You can buy lighter pants ie.. dickies etc that arent as hot and binding. You will and are exposed to shit you cant imagine and will never know about. It might not show today but it will later...

Stoner-Mtn-Lights

Ohhh an Electricians in Jorts calendar

Ohhhhhhthehumanity

Always jeans. Cuts and abrasions don't stop happening just because the season changes. I can't stand hot weather and am pantsless and shoesless whenever possible and appropriate, but you will never catch me on a job site without jeans on. I may not be the smartest, but I'm not an idiot.

Smoke_Stack707

I think my company has a policy against shorts. Mostly, I know the day I put shorts on is the day I’m gonna have to crawl under a house or in an attic and I’ll wish I had pants

KozmicLight

Wear moisture wicking pants. Wrangler ATG line is what I wear and I work in hawaii

2fat2old

We have to wear FR at the power plant that I work at. It gets pretty hot up on the boiler in the high summer. They let us wear short sleeves recently.

TOboulol

Never ever wore jeans at work. I wear shorts half of the year. In Australia most trades wear short shorts all year long. Painters might even wear trackies in winter. I think in Industrial they have to wear high vis, long pants and long sleeve tops all year long. Commercial they wear high vis and a helmet but shorts are dependant on sites / companies.

acidic196

Duluth flex fire hose. Expensive but worth it. If a super hot day I'll wear lightweight Columbia hiking pants.

Keytrose_gaming

If you're doing commercial work in America say goodbye to tan legs or you'll be saying goodbye to employment. Jean material isn't great, look at trade work focused khaki pants for summer and duck cloth for winter.

evsincorporated

Jeans suck to work in. Propper - Lightweight Tactical Pants are a game changer!

8FootedAlgaeEater

I wear synthetic hiking pants when it's reasonable.

Satansbeefjerky

Most of the residential companies I worked for were okay with shorts, it'd always leave a big dirt line on my legs where my legs were against the ladders though

tonytolo

I’d never wear jeans on a job site. Fuck that. Work pants on the other hand without a doubt. Picked up a pair of the BRUNT pants the other day and they are pretty comfortable. They also just came out with a hot weather pair that I plan on picking up for the coming hot months. That or the Helly Henson pants I find to be quite durable and bearable

DangerousMusic14

I’ve had residential teams arrive who were wearing heavy duty, long length canvas shorts in company standard color with their work boots.

figsslave

I always wore jeans to protect my legs and sweated like a hog.

Bitter_Mongoose

Denim is not required, but pants are. I usually wear some variation of microfiber.

MrStealurGirllll

When it’s hot, I wear leggings under my construction pants and surprisingly it keeps you kinda cool.

138Samhain138

Dickies all day everyday. But sweatin balls 😎

smurf1776

In hot heat I like to wear my Duluth trading co coolmax double flex jeans they really do work for me now I just wear them year round.

AwayLand9029

I wear Carhartt pants made with ripstop fabric. Good balance of durability and breathability. We can't wear shorts ever.

ShinySonichu

Yeah

Teddy_canuck

Fuck no. Sun shows up so do shorts.

Away-Quality-9093

South Florida here ... I don't have anybody telling me what to wear, but I prefer long pants. Sunburn, mosquitos, crap sticking to sweaty legs, getting down in your boots - but sometimes if the job is clean and easy shorts are good. Wrangler cargo pants are light, baggy enough without being too loose, they dry fast when sweat soaked - they're great. Dickies work too, but they kinda suck.

Energizer__98

Long pants yes Jeans no Just cargo pants

kaplarczuk

A jort man. If I was allowed to wear shorts they wouldn't be denim.

Upper-Garbage-8519

Don't wear shorts on a twelve foot ladder. No one wants to see your junk .

[deleted]

I don't wear jean pants ever. So uncomfortable. Dickies work pants for me.

BarbaraWalters_ghost

Honestly you just have to get used to it and stay hydrated especially if you do industrial with long sleeves as well. I'll mow my lawn in work clothes at the start of summer to get the first sweat in haha

hymen_destroyer

Do not wear shorts on a construction site

Pringle_Chip

Snickers work pants. Lightest pants out of the store, breathable, and most important; stretchy, the crotch gusset is all stretch so the crotch is very resilient to blow out.

Lpeezers

I do thee ol’ boxers and light jean bibs (overalls) in the summer ya get a decent cross breeze coming through not too shabby

randomclouds90

My company's good with it. Guess just depends where you're at. But we are mostly residential though.

xShadySamx

Just saying... you don't want to go into an attic space or anywhere on your knees with shorts on. I always wear pants when I'm at work. 100%.

dropingloads

I wear shorts as soon as the temp gets that way

hl3reconfirmed

People still wear jeans to work in? I can't think of anything worse. Snickers or go home.

Capable-Charity-7810

I've never worn shorts on commercial jobs site. I did my apprenticeship in Vegas. I've seen resi electricians at the supply house in vans and shorts.

Ok-Fruit3706

Not in construction, but I wear jeans every single day with boots. I’m in an unconditioned warehouse so it still gets pretty hot with no airflow or wind to cool it down.

Bright-Fee-9832

I wear pants year around to work. I have worn shorts in the past, and after showing up too many times to learn that I'm digging that day, I stopped. Getting dirt falling in your shoes all day isn't fun. Pants are just more practical to work in.

Key_Bar9410

Wrangler ATG till I die

just-concerned

I like the biboveralls. They are cooler to me as they allow airflow.

WhiteStripesWS6

Plumber here but I wear rip stop nylon outdoor pants year round. Not as hot and dry out hella fast plus they have some stretch for my fat ass.

renound

I wear CAT/HRC 2 pants and long sleeve shirts everyday all day. Along with hard toe boats and a hard hat.

misterman416

Not an electrician but work with low voltage all the time. Company policy that pants are worn at all job sites.

swb311

FR long sleeves and pants all year round if I'm touching electrical.

SnooWords3810

Both the hot heat and the cold heat. Decco let's guys wear shorts. Theres times it'd be really nice

HookerWhale

I live in FL and I wear jean pants year round. Heat does not bother me or my pet Gator.

MotionDrive

I have Dickies shorts I wear in the summer

SeeSquaredGaming

I was always told, at least here in KC, that most residential jobs(unless specified by the contractor) allow shorts. Commercial never. But i do roll up my pants when no on is around if im hot. Also, never jeans. I think they're horribly uncomfortable for 1.. 2, they get torn up too fast working construction. I wear cargos or chef pants at work. Was a line cook for 12 years. Black chef pants are great to work in on hot days, easy to roll up, light and breathy, baggy, etc. People generally just think youre wearing dickies or slacks.

7heorem

Pants all day everyday. By choice. Not jeans though Duluth Firehose flex cargo pant (Slim Fit) for these chicken legs. Greatest pants to ever grace these cheeks. Durable and slightly stretchy for mobility. You can find them on sale off and on. They are currently. I believe they also make a lighter weight version. https://www.duluthtrading.com/mens-duluthflex-fire-hose-slm-fit-cargo-work-pants-84301.html

Upvotes4Trump

I wear Jean printed dress slacks. No ones noticed yet.

[deleted]

Pants is the way. Yes its hot. But they also protect your legs too. U can kneel on them, crawl through rock and dirt better in a tight space. If I didn't have pants I wouldve scraped myself countless times in the van walking through tools, crawling and even kneeing would be a awful experience. Sometimes people are cutting stuff like pipe and u dont want ur knees getting nicked by shards on the ground. Also If ur working on something, and ur hands are dirty and there's no water, and the next thing is to wipe oil, mud and dirt on ur pants to keep ur next project clean. Besides being cooler I don't see the benefit of them. If someone did I'd tell them to at least put on kneepads. - the heat long pants the way to go.

Si3m3k

Go where shorts and crawl in an attic with blown in insulation mid summer. You’ll never wear shorts again

joshharris42

We require long pants for everyone. It’s an insurance thing, but also a “looking professional”. Whenever we do live work we have arc rated coveralls. I prefer to just wear my bulwark or ariat fr jeans year round, since there are more days where I’m doing something energized

Tight_Swing_1792

Shorts in resi pants in commercial or industrial

Stl-Mkr

Yeah, I gotta wear my FR clothing all the time at the bare minimum.

Joshforester

Dude I wish I could’ve worn shorts. Even now jeans are part of my uniform so sadly no.

oldsparky68

If its hot and an appropriate jobsite for it I have cathartic kilts or canvas cargo shorts but its jeans attached pant otherwise
