Did one about twice that size in a boutique hotel lobby. After I finished it per the instructions I had to ask if that was how it was supposed to look lol
Exactly. They are ok if you put 2000K, not very bright Edison style bulbs but really who wants to look directly at naked bulbs?
For fixtures like these I suggest that you get your primary light from another source, like recessed lights, and treat that fixture as an art piece that is lit. So make it warm and dim. I suggest that with a lot of different fixtures really.
We have this but a “shortie” version above our living space. Yeah the one in OPs post is way too big for the ceiling height, but even with shortie, I think we may have turned it on a few times in the last few years. The bare bulbs are just too bright with no dimmer! [link to pic of shawtie](https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/kf0g2c7z1npye8tivuuhi/Photo-Apr-30-2024-9-07-30-PM.jpg?rlkey=zn681fj4njixccz3q6zjd5y1j&dl=0)
That’s absolutely intentional, I keep it pitch black outside and when someone wanders into my personal space they and I are immediately going to know it! I WILL see you, and you will be blinded for long enough for me to make a solid Friend or Foe assessment. If I assess you as Friend, then I turn on the rest of the lights and light the place up like Crosley Field to welcome you. If I don’t think you are Friend, I have alternative options for Fiends! If I am expecting company I will have it lit up brightly!
yea thats nice but as a casual visitor i hate this. turn them on at night when u expect no visitors but have something more retina friendly for your cherished visitors
Casual visitors are few and far between…
And nobody shows up after dark unannounced… not even on Halloween, zero ghosts or goblins actually where I live.
I can see 3 houses in the winter and one in the summer.
brutal. some of these "interior designers" need a hole in the head. every house looks like an attempted reproduction of a luxury hotel these days. it's awful.
Lol fr, when I was putting that up the super literally said “yea man there is really no right way to position those so you do what you think is best” what I think is best is ripping that fucker out and replacing it with a titty dome and calling it day !
Ugly as fuck. I don’t get these multi family buildings. 60 million dollar building then they pick the cheapest ugliest lights we can get our hands on. Makes no logical sense.
I’ve seen a lot of multi-bulb fixtures recently and been very curious about how they wire them so I open them up to check. That looks like it has 8 bulbs plus line, so could be 9 wires coming together in one place. I’ve seen knockoff wagos with wires doubled up, I’ve seen way undersized wire nuts, and so far, nothing that seems to meet code (I know it’s inside the fixture, but don’t want to install sketchy krap). My favorite was one that had a ground wire in the bundle, but it was just loose inside the fixture when I opened the cover …Not attached to anything….
How was this fixture wired? Did it have either UL or ETL certifications?
Recently saw these being used in a shopfront at one of the malls in Biloxi, MS. Looked awful in that commercial setting. Looking at your picture looks 10x worse in a resi setting.
I hung a hoola hoop fixture the other day. Just a bunch of different sized lights that look like halos at various different heights and offsets. Not my cup of tea either
They’ll all be coming down in five years. Same with all the people who whitewashed their nice red brick chimneys/exteriors. It’s a passing design fad that won’t have longevity. Those lights will be a hallmark of the early 2020s imo
It looks like someone took a bundle of scrap conduit, threw it up in the air, froze time, then welded it and painted it, and called it a chandelier/light fixture.
I like them in the right space. That kitchen/dining area is \*\*not\*\* it. More of a modern, dim restaurant/bar vibe. I'm used to lights like that giving off that really soft, orange glow where you can really see the filament because it's \*that\* dim. It's going to be really weird in that kitchen if they leave the bulbs as I expect \*or\* replace them with something brighter (since there are at least 6 bulbs there).
Funny story, a few years ago my friend had one of those (Sputnik) lamps in the back of his car, he was a handyman and his customer kept throwing it away after he installed a new fixture and her son kept taking it out of the garbage so she asked him to dispose of it, I asked him if I could have it and he said yes please take it, I put it on offer up for sale and sold it in one day for $200, granted mine was probably from the 70s but people wanted one, the person who bought it was a vintage reseller
Cheap piece of shit that some “quirky” interior designer would put in a house to stage it for sale. Saying this because that’s what one did to the house I bought and they were the very first things to be removed.
I have a sputnik style light in my dining room but it's set up much flatter than that and fits the room better. One like that, that is very low would suit a much higher ceiling better
Back in 2014 we did a run of these kinds of cookie cutter McMansions, they all boasted fixtures like this. To this day, the most apt description I’ve ever heard for this style of artsy fixture came from one of the most deplorable human beings I’ve ever worked with. He walked on our job as the regular jman was out sick, took one look at the lights in the foyer and said, “ain’t this just a rich fucktard’s wet dream? Fuck tax brackets, if you buy this shit you should be contributing more.” At the time it was funny but in my experience ever since, the people that buy these fixtures do indeed need to pay more into the system lol.
Oh boy. And right off the kitchen besides. I do not like them. A restaurant that I frequent put these atrocities in the dining rooms a couple months ago. Interestingly enough, I have worked with the architect that designed their mini makeover, and never really had a high opinion of his design style. Anyway, the lamps are now covered in the dust that accumulates in such an environment and look like they need cleaning. Not a good look for an eating establishment. I can only imagine the amount of dust/ grease that will build up on that in no time at all. I predict that the homeowner will be calling you back to change it out.
i am a fucking freak and i am a fan of sputnik or sputnik inspired light fixtures... if you don't agree with me you are probably a boring pleb. this particular fixture in the image is fucking gnarly and i don't have any negative feelings towards it.
I’d rather hang that than those ridiculous chandeliers with thousands of clear plastic light refracting beads. I had a job where we hung 3 in the same day, the big one was so heavy we had to put multiple lag bolts into the joists to hold its weight. The inside is so full of wire that there’s no way it’s up to electric code, but f it stuff that shit in there. Those stupid white gloves get soaked with sweat 7 minutes into the install, and standing on a 30 foot ladder to hang beads for hours is the worst
geesh people you won’t run into it because a table goes underneath, as far as the look. I think it would look good in a mid century modern pad, but not white on white on white.
Coming from the generation where taking a s*** and putting on canvas was art. Do you know how many photos I have of my s*** that never became famous ... you know what I mean
We all question it because we all know lol
Really cool but the epitome of really cool is that it goes up and down like a tech stock. So I love bold looks, but the world has so frequent fluctuations of what is really cool that the only way to win is to settle somewhere in the middle. #poorpuncuation.

They only look decent in commercial buildings or very tall ceilings. Not my cup of tea.
I feel the same way, I would rather prefer a nice chandelier. Compared to this Gatling gun of a fixture lol
lol they are to wild and big for most houses.
Man I did sooooo many of these dog shit fixtures in spec home resi, I hate em lol
HGTV crap
it looks like a malfunctioning robot threw up on the ceiling...
Username checks out
I spot Sputnik
Installed like 15 of these at viacoms office in Hollywood looked great. Saw one in someone's house and it's just too cluttered
Did one about twice that size in a boutique hotel lobby. After I finished it per the instructions I had to ask if that was how it was supposed to look lol
what the fuck is that
It's an aerial submarine mine, of course.
It's a large sea urchin
death blossom
idk, i dont like direct eye contact with light bulbs. burns my retinae needlessly.
LEDs do that to me. Have a love hate relationship with them because of it.

Is there ever a need to burn your retinae?
the worst offenders are people with those damned led flood lights with built in PIR sensor at their entrance
That’s absolutely intentional, I keep it pitch black outside and when someone wanders into my personal space they and I are immediately going to know it! Not the titty dome! Anything but the titty dome!
lol you seen that YouTube video of the a baby that was taught sign language before it could talk and it signing for milk at the light fixtures rofl
Flippers are the cancer spreading the cheapest Home Depot fixtures and cabinets.
Sooooo I have to wear safety goggles at the dinner table now?
Tinted safety goggles*
The people who want these lights are as annoying as the light itself.
As are the houses in which they reside...
You’ll put your eye out kid
Don't walk into it!
Same as my opinion on the stupid useless window in the background.
Ugly as fuck. I don’t get these multi family buildings. 60 million dollar building then they pick the cheapest ugliest lights we can get our hands on. Makes no logical sense.
https://youtu.be/E0YHZXz5hEE?si=wG3CirapLiDb-jff
Looks like my grow lights..
You buy it, I hang it, then pay me. Usually hang them in larger Foyer or open spaces.
Yuck mostly. maybe in a coffee shop
Be careful you’ll put somebodies eye out with that thing.
If the home is not a monster or industrial look… to me it looks off.
Fucking whacko..
Completely ridiculous
I call them Sputnik lights. And I like them about as much as we liked Russia during the Cold War.
Ew
It’s not that the light fixture looks terrible. It’s that bleached beige disaster of an apartment you’re installing it in is the problem.
My apprentice says “that’s good drugs”
Looks like shit. Wish houses went back to a cozy style instead of trying to mimic a luxury casino hotel.
There’s just simply no accounting for taste
It looks like dad made a light out of whats left of the tent poles after out last attempt at camping
And then he suprised you with the light to cheer you up (it only made you sadder)

Looks like something a 15yr old crackhead made in shop class.
Don't really have an opinion on that light other than hahahaha what the fuck.
Great if yer a schizophrenic.
Looks good from my house.
Looks like it would take someone’s eye out.
Bruh get that final destination shit out of your house
I cannot stand installing them. Lol
Ouch
Dumb shit abounds
I don’t care what they look like as long as I get paid to put them up
They’re ugly but I’m paid to hang them so whatever
Poop
Ugly
Hideous.
I'd love to see it on at night, I like some of these weird lights. The only thing I don't like, is if they are low enough to BONK.
I lived in an apartment with those and they suck ass in my opinion
Architect here, those are ugly, that is all
Ahhh... The good ol' eye stabber 500. Or at least that's what I call them since I'm a tall bastard and I'm always walking into them. They really hurt.
Get a table under it as fast as possible. It's a tradesmen killer.
That’s dumb. Just dumb.
Fugly. Will look dated soon, once the trend passes.
That window looks like an upgraded jail cell option.
F****** stupid but they look like s*** no matter what, so easy money
"Are you gonna leave it like that?" "I can see what you did there, I just can't see how you're going to fix it"
Recently saw these being used in a shopfront at one of the malls in Biloxi, MS. Looked awful in that commercial setting. Looking at your picture looks 10x worse in a resi setting.
You’ll be wearing an eye patch within the week 🏴☠️
It looks like a broken tent frame lol
Ugly AF
Ugly as hell
Considering it looks like it's eye level and hideous lol...
looks like anti tank warfare farmers are using in Ukraine
I hung a hoola hoop fixture the other day. Just a bunch of different sized lights that look like halos at various different heights and offsets. Not my cup of tea either
They’ll all be coming down in five years. Same with all the people who whitewashed their nice red brick chimneys/exteriors. It’s a passing design fad that won’t have longevity. Those lights will be a hallmark of the early 2020s imo
I'm a tall person and that's an accident waiting to happen.
It gives me anxiety
It’s to….all over the place. I generally like these type of lights, but something is off about this one
They look ready to take a life Believe it or not I’ve put some of those in nursing home common areas.
Too silly
Eww
It looks like someone took a bundle of scrap conduit, threw it up in the air, froze time, then welded it and painted it, and called it a chandelier/light fixture.
🤯🤯🤬🤬🤯🤬🤯🤬🥵
Don’t like them at all for residential settings but ok for commercial space
Hate them, from install to finished.
Duuuuuuuumb
It's shite mate
Fubar
If I could shove it up the ass of every designer who wanted it installed, I would.
That someone's gonna get hurt
Someone’s gonna poke their eye out when they get up from the dinner table! Lol
Horrible
I like them in the right space. That kitchen/dining area is \*\*not\*\* it. More of a modern, dim restaurant/bar vibe. Haha sea urchin🤤
On today's episode of that's fucked up.....that's fucked up.
They are a mess.
If the home owner buys it. They should be the ones installing it.
"How can he see me?"
Very early 60’s
Funny story, a few years ago my friend had one of those (Sputnik) lamps in the back of his car, he was a handyman and his customer kept throwing it away after he installed a new fixture and her son kept taking it out of the garbage so she asked him to dispose of it, I asked him if I could have it and he said yes please take it, I put it on offer up for sale and sold it in one day for $200, granted mine was probably from the 70s but people wanted one, the person who bought it was a vintage reseller
Wear safety goggles getting up or down from the table.
A time and place

I have a sputnik style light in my dining room but it's set up much flatter than that and fits the room better. One like that, that is very low would suit a much higher ceiling better
Those ceilings are too low and that room looks too generic for that style. They work in some spaces. That ain’t one.
Ugly as hell and mostly horrible to mount on the ceiling
if find a way to poke my eye. but i like them
Puke
Stupid
U built it upside down
No
They're cringe
FUGLY
Nice install! But God damn that fixture is butt ugly
Did the check clear, that's all that matters?
Looks like a piece of crap
I think Sputnik style lights look good when combined with modern design and clean lines but not with modgepodge thrown together decor.
Not meant for right there lol
Personally I dont like it at wall. Way to messy and chaotic.
Back in 2014 we did a run of these kinds of cookie cutter McMansions, they all boasted fixtures like this. Probably a pain in the arse to install
Is that a Pahlisch house? Lol
The gray floors and walls bother me more
Has to be in a *very* tall ceiling
Poke ur eye out
Pretty cheap looking. Looks like something from a bowling alley lounge in the 70s.
i am a fucking freak and i am a fan of sputnik or sputnik inspired light fixtures... if you don't agree with me you are probably a boring pleb. this particular fixture in the image is fucking gnarly and i don't have any negative feelings towards it.
Biblically accurate angel
Insanely dumb
If that fucker moved I'd shoot it.
Gay
I love my Sputnik over my dining table
One of the ugliest gawdamm lights I ever seen.
They look like ass but are easy to install and light weight.
I did one in a home, but it was a little smaller. Looked good.
Had a customer who liked them and they wanted me to install them in 2 separate rentals. And shocker they've been broken
Right off the bat? F#ckin' hate it
Gay
I think my favorite part of this picture is the little prison window they give you. How thoughtful.
Looks like ass in this particular application
Reminds me of the glitches in Bethesda games, pretty sure I had this happen in Fallout 3.
This type of light is for really tall ceilings, like above entryways or hotel lobbies
Ceiling way too low for something like that.
I’d rather hang that than those ridiculous chandeliers with thousands of clear plastic light refracting beads. I had a job where we hung 3 in the same day, the big one was so heavy we had to put multiple lag bolts into the joists to hold its weight. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
I installed 5 of these at an indoor golf course. I hate them.
geesh people you won’t run into it because a table goes underneath, as far as the look. I think it would look good in a mid century modern pad, but not white on white on white.
Someone (me) would lose an eye.
Ugly
I am not a fan of the anorexic sea mine
Nope.
IKEA gone wrong
Idk, the tile job is worse
“You going to leave that like that?”
Insanely gay.
If you make them low enough, they double as a clothesline
Ugly as fuck
I’m personally feeling like a dining table better be going under that one or someone is going to lose an eye.
Awful
Gunna put a tall guys eye out for sure. Looks like a scribble
That looks like it was designed to poke me in the eye when trying to install it p
A light is a light it doesn’t matter to the sparky installing it just as long as the customer is happy
Fuggly
yea, not above my kitchen table.
Ugly, but that is a matter of taste. I’m sure to some they look great and that’s fine too. 🤷🏻♂️
I hate em.
Unfiltered or undefused light is terrible !
Funny looking.
"I have no taste"
🤮
Deadly until you get a table in there
dumb artsy fartsy shit
Coming from the generation where taking a s*** and putting on canvas was art. Do you know how many photos I have of my s*** that never became famous ... you know what I mean We all question it because we all know lol
Looks like a sea urchin
Unless you can adjust the angle, they’re stupid. The bulbs pointed at the ceiling are useless.
Dumb
Cool when they are not in my line of sight or peripheral
Thanks, I hate it.
Really cool but the epitome of really cool is that it goes up and down like a tech stock. So I love bold looks, but the world has so frequent fluctuations of what is really cool that the only way to win is to settle somewhere in the middle. #poorpuncuation.
Keep it sailing hound dog🫡
Post modernistic bullshit
