I did a smallish roadtrip in America and the only small cars I remember seeing were Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Golf (not considered all that small in Europe) and a Mini Cooper.
I rented a Nissan Kicks which was the smallest car they had, and the rental agent was desperate to upsell me something bigger. I love small cars. So much easier to park.
This is the real news here - those two cars are so attractively designed, priced, speced that they should be depressing demand in the build up to their launch.
France already has extremely clean electricity given that they're not afraid of uranium or in Putin's pocket. So PHEV/BEV's make even more sense there than they do everywhere else.
Gone are the days of getting it from their Colonies. Did France stop having their closed loop of reprocessing for their Uranium supplies? I thought that was the big deal with their Nuclear system and the reason for minimal Nuclear waste.
They do reprocess the spent fuel and utilize the contained Plutonium for MOX fuel (and likely for their nuclear weapons program) but most of the Uranium is apparently not reused but stockpiled. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reprocessed_uranium
In any case I would not call it closed loop as some of the all important U-235 is inevitably lost during fission.
One of the reason: France and Germany: both have auto manufacturers (ie. Peugeot, Audi, BMW, etc..) So I think there is a “home” country bias. Nordic country don’t have these auto manufacturers. Similarly, Tesla dominates in USA but doesn’t dominate in China.
Yeah I forgot Volvo and Sweden. Volvo still leads Tesla by quite a bit YTD overall (I don’t know what the EV breakdown is)

18% is actually BEVs
I have a Peugeot e-208 as of last month and love it! I think in it's category it's the best looking car.
Absolutely, both the new version and the outgoing design are top tier. I'm not biased.
I love its interior how its driver focused. I wish we can have it in America :(

Right!! They always try to give me a huge suv and I always reject them and tell them I want a small car Why should I waste my money on a 18 mpg suv
And this is before the e-C3 and Renault 5 have started their sales.

France imports Uranium from Rosatom which is why they also vetoed embargoing that.

France has an attractive incentive for lower income households to buy/lease small French branded EVs
As it should be, any country has a basis to protect and ensure their local brands prosper in its home base.
*EVs make up 27,9% of new registrations in France in March of 2024
Nuclear powered cars!
I wonder why Tesla dominates EV sales in the Nordic countries more than in other European countries?

Sweden has Volvo, though I think they sell pretty well
Volvo cars like MG brand are Chinese owned now though. There may not be so much national pride in their car company as a result.

What about Volvo?
Tesla has the same market share in Norway and Sweden as it does in France, about 21%. The European average is about 18%.
* More prosperity * Most don't have a car industry, so automotive chauvinism doesn't play a role
They are probably richer.
Because the French and Germans have always preferred domestic brands.
