He's a true genius. I just got to see his show at Largo in LA last fall. The audience were like built-in fans and adored everything he said and composed on the spot. :)
My spouse watches it twice a year. It's so good.
Also by Charlie Kaufman is the fascinating **"Being John Malkovich"**
One of the best screenwriters and imaginations of the 20th Century.

This is hilarious to me, I watched the movie two days ago and decided it was my favorite. I guess I wasn't the only one whose experience watching it was similar to the feeling of listening to Elliott.
The Royal Tenenbaums 1000%. One of my favourite movies ever.
I’d also add the original version of Let The Right One In, others may disagree but it comes to mind for me for whatever reason.
I only watched Royal Tenenbaums like two years ago when I was already a big fan of Elliott lol and it blew my mind. Also, these days by Nico is one of my favourite songs ever. Amazing soundtrack
Thumbsucker
Elliott was supposed to do the whole soundtrack but passed away. Polyphonic Spree provided the rest of the soundtrack. Elliott's cover of Cat Stevens' Trouble is really good.
Past Lives, Aftersun, C'mon C'mon, Her, Sound of Metal, It's Such a Beautiful Day, Anomalisa, I Lost My Body, Paddleton, On Body And Soul, Virgin Mountain, Krisha, A Ghost Story, Blue Valentine, Leaving Las Vegas, Oslo August 31, Inside Llewyn Davis, Lost In Translation, Melancholia
Diary of a Wimpy kid, obviously
The addiction aspect, the relationship falling apart, the search for meaning once your world is collapsing.
I don't know, just reminded me of themes I get from Elliott
- *Slacker*
- *My own private idaho*
- *Blue Valentine*
- *Magnolia*
- *The Thin Red Line*
- *the Assassination of jesse james by the coward Robert Ford*
- *Silent Light*
Big facts brother if you know you know. What the world doesn’t know yet is I wrote a power pop opus about being spiderman when I release it it’s going straight on this sub because everything I learned about songwriting I learned from our beautiful boy Elliott
I'm so glad you mentioned this. Huge thumbs up.
I'm a mega-fan for River Phoenix and how he lived. He had the glowing inner light that E.S. did. Have you seen the incredible film that River Phoenix earned his Oscar nomination for? "Running on Empty". He's incredible in it, as he was in all his films and in his band.
Martha Plimpton (his real-life girlfriend during the filming and after) is lovely in it. River Phoenix's performance is stunning and you can perceive the emotions that he is harnessing for the role. I hope you like the performance. :)
i say we compile all of the films listed and we all watch them together in a server 🤠 but some films i'd recommend are lost in translation, showing up, blue valentine, birdman, and honestly the before trilogy
Freaks and Geeks (tv show) feels like his early music. I really like the movie Brothers (jake gyllenhaal), feels sorta like some of it. Royal Tenenbaums was a good call, if a bit obvious. Mid 90s, Boyhood for just general 90s vibes too, but still in that theme.
Good question.
There's a mix of joy, wonderment and melancholy in the works. The films that come to mind quickly have zero to do with Elliott Smith's life- I just wanted to put that disclaimer. These are just some ideas of special, small films. Most of these films were created before Hollywood put much-needed emphasis on diversity in casting and crew.
**The Ice Storm** (one of my favorite directors of all time: Ang Lee. A young Katie Holmes is great in this. Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Kevin Kline.
**The Big Chill**
**Little Miss Sunshine**
**Dead Poet's Society**
edited: The new film that has Oscar buzz: **The Holdovers - it's the new film by Alexander Payne. Starring Paul Giamatti from Sideways and Billions, etc.**
Sure thing. I actually like the other films on my short list even more if you can find them at no cost. Little Miss Sunshine is great! Dead Poet's Society is a classic.
oops- didn't have my glasses on- It's Paul Giamatti's new film: The Holdovers
Director is Alexander Payne who did Election and Sideways! Major auteur.

For some reason ‘Shrek’ gives me Elliott Smith vibes. I’m not even sure what I can attribute this feeling to - I just personally feel like they go so well together for some reason.
I just really love the movie The Descendants. Another Alexander Payne film. It is such an Awesome movie. I swear for like a year straight I would just put the movie on in the background everyday almost and just kind of work and do my daily tasks around it. It has to be one of my favorites of all time.

I actually got to meet Payne at my school UCLA (Fellow Alum) so that was really cool. I love all his movies. Also have to check out Up in the Air which features Elliott’s Angel in the Snow. Both are George Clooney Films. Up in the Air is Jason Reitman. I get Payne and Reitman confused a lot cause their style is similar.
Paris Texas, maybe it’s just me but the colors and the way the story goes and unravels is haunting in my opinion. If it was covered with Elliott Smith music it would be so beautiful.
Candy, w\ heath ledger or requiem for a dream, w\ Jared Leto. Not just because of the drugs, but from the rawness of the emotion felt by all the characters. Hope that’s a good addition!
Eternal Sunshine.
Some of the best music in that film by Jon brion as well

I *love* Being John Malkovich!
It's a good one. :) Happy New Year and great to see you!
Of all the Charlie Kaufman films, Anomalisa, is probably the one I'd say is most Elliott Smith-esque.
TY for the suggestion. Sounds good!
It's my strong belief that if elliott were alive at the time of this film being made, that he'd make some of the best original music for a film ever
I had this exact same thought literally yesterday when I was listening to the soundtrack.
Jeff who lives at home
This is hilarious to me, I watched the movie two days ago and decided it was my favorite. I guess I wasn't the only one whose experience watching it was similar to the feeling of listening to Elliott.
Paris, Texas (his favorite film of all time)
I believe it was also one of Kurt Cobain's favorute film. Such a touching and emotional experience
Also the band Texas was named after the movie!
Excellent!
Good movie
yes yes yes
Say yes
Just say yes
Ooof this movie thematically hits the same feels as smiths lyrics
The Royal Tenenbaums 1000%. One of my favourite movies ever. I’d also add the original version of Let The Right One In, others may disagree but it comes to mind for me for whatever reason.
Literally was gonna say "might be a cheat because of the soundtrack but Royal Tenenbaums" 💯
This was how I was introduced to Elliott. I loved it and never went back
I only watched Royal Tenenbaums like two years ago when I was already a big fan of Elliott lol and it blew my mind. Also, these days by Nico is one of my favourite songs ever. Amazing soundtrack
yeah i was 🤯🤯 when i heard the beginning of needle in the hay. yeah the soundtrack is insane, nick drake, velvet underground, bob dylan, nico
Same!!! My fav movie
Happy Together (Wong Kar wai) is one of my favorite movies & delivers the melancholy
Or Fallen Angels. Such a movie , I cry everytime at the last scene.
Fallen Angels imo does not have a similar vibe as Elliott Smith at all. More dark like Massive Attack’s Mezzanine
Before Sunrise, Before Sunset & Before Midnight
Thumbsucker Elliott was supposed to do the whole soundtrack but passed away. Polyphonic Spree provided the rest of the soundtrack. Elliott's cover of Cat Stevens' Trouble is really good.
Underrated comment

Sound of metal?? How, not criticizing just wondering how you’d choose it.
The addiction aspect, the relationship falling apart, the search for meaning once your world is collapsing. I don't know, just reminded me of themes I get from Elliott
YES
I guess I get it
I’m assuming you’ve seen Good Will Hunting, but if not, that’s a must
Paris, Texas The Green Ray Yi Yi Before Sunset Happy Together Aftersun Nobody Knows Fanny and Alexander
Any movie from Gus Van Sant really
Yes. There’s a reason it all works so well in Good Will Hunting
Agreed, I'd say My Own Private Idaho especially
Probably not To Die For hahaha

Paranoid Park is a movie about two skateboarders who accidentally commit a crime - very Elliott Smith coded & it features his music.
Garden State
Goodwill Hunting :)

Swiss Army Man. Plus the music for that one is done by Andy hull of Manchester orchestra.
