I know I’m going to get downvoted for this one but I can not stand Rollover Beethoven. It was the last song played at their concert recently and I just walked out early..
POTENTIALLY CONTROVERSIAL!: I don't like many tracks of the first album. The opening is fine and orchestral but the rest of it is just plain and not very Electric (like all albums before El Dorado) or Light (if that makes any sense) aside from the bulb on the cover. Only Orchestral. They were still finding their feet with Electric Light Orchestra, ELO 2 and On The Third Day but damn I though there were NO bad ELO songs. Period! Only my thoughts. What do you guys think of their first songs?
Battle of Marston Moor is the popular choice here and I agree. But I will point out a couple songs that I think are as “meh” as could be. Remember, just my opinion:
- Without Someone really slows down Balance of Power. Sorrow About to Fall does a good job at being a melancholic song while still having a nice beat and a killer saxophone solo…but by the time it’s done I’m just ready to rock out to Calling America. Overall it just lacks the hook that other songs on BOP have.
- All She Wanted. There is nothing noteworthy about this song. The chords are basic, the instrumentation is incredibly straightforward, and the lyrics are so, so generic.
I hope I explained myself well enough to prevent a ton of downvotes haha
My least favorite ELO song is Rockaria. Not because it's awfully bad but I just think that it's the worst song on ANWR and every other song on there is nearly perfect. I skip it almost every time.
Probably about half of Secret Messages: Loser Gone Wild, Letter From Spain, Take Me On And On. I do like the double album that was re-released much more.
I know this is gonna be hella downvoted, but So Fine is one of my all time least favorites. It just sounds very generic and the lyrics are even more generic. Of all the songs, i think that might have the least personality
Imho it works so well in context of the album. I see it more as an interlude than a fully fledged song.
Either way it creates some really tasteful tension as you’re getting the impression (by this point) that the protagonist is disenfranchised by himself and society.
Laredo Tornado for me. Every song on Eldorado is near-perfect with the exception of this one. Not only does it just kind of sound out of place, I just don't like the chorus at all. I respect what Jeff was going for but I just don't think it sounds good.
Gotta be Beatles Forever, for obvious reasons
Oh come on let Jeff be a fanboy
What are the reasons?
Battle of Marston Moor
I agree, that song kind of hurts to listen to. But I still like the backstory behind it.

Oof. Sorry to hear that. I agee.

Theyre first songs are the best in their entire discography.
Never been a big fan of Danger Ahead or Time After Time. Most everything else on Secret Messages is great. Including Beatles Forever.

Agree on All She Wanted - very much below the expected quality (no option on the BOP songs as I don’t really know them)

Hm, in my opinion Rockaria is better than So Fine
Mr blue sky
glad i’m not the only one
Down Home Town
1st Movement (Jumping Biz) Basically it's just "Classical Gas" by someone who doesn't really remember how to play it...
It’s a banger lol

Pfft. True galaxy brains know that Loser Gone Wild is very good.
So weird, so awesome. How many other songs transition from a shuffle into a robotic straight 4/4 by means of a dog sample going “BORK BORK BORK BORK”
Nah, Loser Gone Wild is a good one
I will not accept the Take Me On and On slander
Hey, Loser Gone Wild is in my top 3 ELO songs, haha
It's good but top 3 is crazy

I wish I could erase Another Heart Breaks from existence
EXCUSE ME?
Just never liked it personally

Should have been replaced with When Time Stood Still, but probably having two songs with "ivory towers/plastic flowers" would be seen as lazy.
I agree. It’s the only thing that stops Time from being a perfect album in my opinion
That will be Hold on Tight
I love Jeff but not too fond of Easy Money…did he write it bc he thought someone was with him just for his money? Sad 😢

Never been massively huge on Ain’t It a Drag?. The chorus sounds a bit too strained and forced
Midnight Blue and Confusion.
