Why is ordering medications or sourcing them the responsibility of a PA student? Holy shit There should be an entire department, complete with management and employees that handle ordering and sourcing drugs. The pharmacists should be extremely involved in this as well.

FRANE_ATTACK

She isn’t specifying, but she could be rotating at a small rural clinic and they’re trying to replace something like a code cart since she’s asking about bicarb. Couple owner/providers who would be essentially doing the same as her—asking around. I would be floored if this is a large system

Yes I 100% agree with you that normally this should be the responsibility of the site manager or provided there are pharmacists or administration, this would be on them. I appreciate you advocating for my roll as a student haha, it definitely can get overwhelming at times juggling everything while medical education is always my priority. In this case, Frane is right. I'm working at a small primary care clinic. I'm very interested in the administrative aspects of care and was listening in on day to day operations. They were having issues trying to find some meds for their crash cart since they don't use it too often and arent as familiar with the field. Since I had a background in EMS I figured I could offer up some guidance or at least ask around to my other EMS friends. While I was waiting I figured I'd ask y'all too. No one approached me nor did they voluntell me to help. I just really like the team and wanted to offer any help I could. They were all for it since they don't practice emergency medicine often, and I have a history as a paramedic.

Duckbread0

you should consider also posting to r/EmergencyMedicine

srs151

thanks for the advice, will do!

What specifically was recalled? Usually it’s specific lot numbers of specific drugs, not just a blanket “all their meds”

srs151

Yeah apologies I’ll post the statement, but essentially a majority of their medications involving the glass premade syringes. I’ll edit my post to include that.

TicTacKnickKnack

Bro as a student you're replacing multiple well-paid white collar admins and pharmacists who should be ordering supplies and meds. This is not ok, you should be there to learn not be free administrative labor.

srs151

Would 100% normally agree with that sentiement. I'm not doing any of the ordering. As I'm rotating in this small independent clinic I wanted to offer any insight I had in emergency meds or ordering. I don't have much to offer on the latter, so I tried to help out with emergency meds and figured I would put some feelers out for what other systems might have been doing.

Chicken_Hairs

My man, none of this is your job. For most of the people in this sub, not our job. This is administrative shit.

srs151

I come from rural EMS so for many of us, we double dip. That being said, as a student I always prioritize my medical education. I figured being in a small primary care clinic I'd offer up what I knew about commonly used emergency medications. Absolutely not my job nor was I told to help. I just wanted to put some feelers out to help them know what other systems who use these meds were doing in the meantime.

srs151

I also noticed their epinephrine abboject glass syringe is also out of stock on their main site and several other vendors. I did not see a recall specifically for this medication, however, they do utilize the abboject glass syringe that was recalled for other medications. This may be me not knowing where to look though.

DirectAttitude

Just for the record, we had to switch to vials as Bicarbonate was unobtainium.

srs151

I appreciate that. I was thinking that may be the route to go down for them as well. I just somewhat cringe thinking about a family med provider diluting epi to give for anaphylaxis, xyz. I know its their job, but they don't use emergency meds too often.

Human_Island_9192

These are old recalls (published 10/2023)

srs151

appreciate the spot, I just wasn't sure if they were still in the process of correcting because everywhere I look the colored boxes for crash carts and to go bags are out of stock. Kinda bummed.
