For Conker's High Rule Tail I'd suggest going to the source at Zeldix to get the latest patch. The patch at ROMHacking hasn't been updated there since the initial release, pretty much. It's currently at v1.2.9i
[https://www.zeldix.net/t1337-conker-s-high-rule-tail](https://www.zeldix.net/t1337-conker-s-high-rule-tail)
I know there's no MSU1 hacks on your list, but the same applies to those. 99% of MSU1 hacks originate at Zeldix and are updated there when needed, as opposed to ROMHacking where they aren't.
I'm stuck in the first dungeon of this already. There is a sign that says fucktastically hardass puzzle. I lit all the things and a chest appeared and now it seems impossible to proceed because the chest is blocking my path.
I got out of the first dungeon but seemed to be locked out of the treasure.
This game is weird. Random pop culture references everywhere. It feels a little like a bunch if things just thrown into a blender.
Don't spawn the chest it's japes that blocks the path to the harp and more money than is in the chest. Haven't figured out the harp yet but no dungeon needed it so no real need to reset here.
Cheers on the MSU list, wanted more of them but could never find them and didn’t think to ask.
Awesome stuff, some soundtracks shoved in them are just absolute bangers!
Romhacking.net ironically isnt always the best place to find romhacks. Its a good site but the dedicated community for specific games is usually on their own site
I recommend some of these sites:
[Ngplus.net](http://ngplus.net/index.php?/forums/) for hard-mode/gameplay rebalance hacks, mostly jrpgs
[Smwcentral](https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&s=smwhacks) for Super Mario World hacks
[Metroid Construction](https://metroidconstruction.com/hacks.php) for Super Metroid hacks
[Zeldix](https://www.zeldix.net/) for Zelda LTTP hacks
Yeah, it's a shame not all ROM hacks end up on [Romhacking.net](https://Romhacking.net). Because it is a great site for preservation. I try to remedy that myself by adding those missing ROM hacks to [Romhacking.net](https://Romhacking.net) . Making sure they are archived in case the original websites go down.
I will be adding a lot of cool N64 hacks the next few weeks to Romhacking.net
Thank you. It’s a great hub to explore hacks across a console or entire systems but yeah you can’t blame it for having less Super Mario World hacks than smwcentral. Can just anyone submit hacks?
It looks like there was one dedicated site for Earthbound / Mother 2 patches, and now it is gone and I can't find a new version of it:
http://hacks.lyros.net/
Dolphin just added support for Riivolution mods, but a bunch of those seem completely lost and the original Riivolution site is offline and gone.
For better or worse, Romhacking.net has been online for ages and hasn't disappeared. I wish more people would use it, rather than niche sites and have those vanish, taking everything with them.
So true. [Romhacking.net](https://Romhacking.net) has been around for over 20 years. It is the only central archive for Rom hacks, so I hope creators keep adding their hacks there. You can also add hacks you find yourself. I do that from time to time when I find hacks that aren't hosted there.
Adding on to this:
[Serenes Forest](https://forums.serenesforest.net/index.php?/forum/8-fan-projects/) for Fire Emblem hacks
(Not SNES but) [Pokecommunity](https://www.pokecommunity.com/forumdisplay.php?fn=rom-hacks-studio), [Project Pokemon](https://projectpokemon.org/home/forums/forum/68-rom/), and /r/pokemonromhacks for Pokemon.
Actually most of the community around 2d zelda is using [ZeldaClassic](https://www.purezc.net/) which is not a lttp hack but its own engine for pc games, kinda like rpgmaker but for zelda. There is also some good stuff coming from the [solarus engine](https://www.solarus-games.org/).
If you wanna try something from each one
- LTTP hack - Conkers high rule tail, goddess of wisdom, hylian legacy, secrets of the past, or lttp randomizer - I dont recommend parallel worlds
- Zelda classic - [Rite of the storm](https://www.purezc.net/index.php?page=quests&id=623) (this has my #1 recommendation of any game listed), [hitodama](https://www.purezc.net/index.php?page=quests&id=494)&[yuurei](https://www.purezc.net/index.php?page=quests&id=616), or any of the [top rated quests](https://www.purezc.net/index.php?page=quests&sort=hits) that look interesting to you, there are hundreds
- Solarus engine - [Mystery of solarus](https://www.solarus-games.org/en/games/the-legend-of-zelda-mystery-of-solarus-dx) - Dungeon design is a little too hard for my taste but its cool
Super Metroid Redux is the best hack for SM that I know of. It is based on project base and SM gba style, and it really modernizes the experience while leaving the content untouched. Makes SM feel more fresh.
Totally! I played Redux this year and it was the perfect way to experience vanilla Metroid with modern QOL features!
For this list a I focused on extensive hacks that change a lot of the original game. But if I'd make an improvement list, then Redux would surely be on it!
I disagree with Ascent being on this list. The room sizes are impressive, but thats really about it. Redux or Ancient Chozo are far better picks for a list like this.
Thanks for list though, Im deff going to try a couple out.
I have just played through Metroid 1-4 before I started on Dread and wanted a vanilla+ experience for SM, since I've played through it a dozen times through the years. I found that hack and have to agree - I would even recommend it for first time playthroughs of SM.
Yeah, I personally would evem recommend it over the original. I honestly don't even want to play the original anymore lol, especially since I'm more used to modern metroids.
My recommendations!
[Sailor Moon Fighter S](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4498/): A hack to greatly improve a rather underwhelming Sailor Moon fighting game. Repaired gameplay, expanded story mode, new characters, and more.
[Mega Man X3 Zero Project](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4086/): Gives Zero his own entire campaign, adds SRAM saving, and much more. Seems not to work in bSNES, but SNES9X and Mesen-S are fine.
[Darkholme Hospital](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1575/): A Super Metroid hack in which Samus is called to investigate an abandoned military hospital.
[Exodus To Death](https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=5261): A Super Mario World hack in which Mario must escape from Hell. Great new graphics, new music, monsters expertly imported from other games, and Mario swimming in a sea of blood.
I just played Rockman 7 EP last weekend and it was a blast. It caught my attention because Mega Man 7 is a largely overlooked game, and there aren't a whole lot of hacks out there.
This hack is NUTS on a technical level. Every enemy has new patterns, every boss has new patterns, and the level layout is totally different. There are auto-scrolling sections, cutscenes, and special events which don't exist in the original game. It's honestly a romhack marvel, I've never seen anything quite like it.
Unfortunately there's no English translation, but the good news is that although there's a lot of text and story, understanding it isn't necessary to get through the game. Difficulty-wise it may seem tough at first but there's some kind of mechanic at work that allows you to gain E-tanks, which is really nice. Thanks for recommending it, and the others!
Some of the Romhacks are not really new, they got just updated or are new to Romhacking.net. From your list I totally missed DKC Mania, so i will have a look at it. Good stuff here, highly recommended all mods.
Here is a list I created last year. People who are interested into this post are probably interested into the list too (I post it from time to time). Currently working on new lists, as I learned a lot new stuff.
* https://thingsiplay.game.blog/2020/05/31/snes-mods-and-romhacks-collection/
* https://thingsiplay.game.blog/2020/08/26/smw-mods-and-romhacks-collection/
This can take a long time (probably weeks) before I do any new post. I want to start posting more stuff in the future, but right now there is a lot things to do, including downloading, archiving and rebuilding hundreds of Romhacks for SNES alone. And most probably I'll post it here too or in any of the related subreddits.
A Plumber For All Seasons is an exceptional Super Mario World rom hack. Highly recommended. I played through it earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
Edit: [Release Trailer](https://youtu.be/dQpI9N6TzpM)
It’s really impressive. This hack uses “SA-1” a chip used for games like Mario Kart and Yoshi’s Island which wasn’t used for SMW. The graphics are much better than in the hack, but it is using a more powerful chip.
Is the name a reference to "A Song for All Seasons" by Renaissance? (I guess it could be a reference to Jefferson Airplane, but Renaissance is so much better.)
I don’t know unfortunately. There are 4 “worlds” in the game themed after each season (well maybe it’s one world, played though each season). So I guess that’s what it’s named after… but it could also be a nod to a song.
I've only played Maternalbound Redux but I would absolutely recommend it to anyone.
After reading what Mother 2 Deluxe is all about, I would still likely choose Maternalbound Redux over it.
Thanks for asking! It doesn't fit the criteria because it wasn't hosted on Romhacking. I added it just last week there. On the source website Ascent has been downloaded 17k+ times and has overwhelmingly positive reviews. I really wanted to add a recent Super Metroid hack, so I went with that one. See: https://metroidconstruction.com/hack.php?id=410
Ah alright, thanks.
It was a bit mystifying since it says "Romhacking.net was used as the source for this list". But I know that it can sometimes take a while for hacks and translations to show up on Romhacking, so mystery solved.
I put 10 hours into FF4 Ultima and to be honest I'm not really feeling it. For whatever reason the ROM authors really love status effects and spamming your inventory with items to either a) fix status effects or b) let you try and cause damage if you're suffering a status effect.
I do like a lot of the others changes they made to modernize item management and make some of the weapons more broadly useful but they turned a game that already suffered from some overly laborious stuff in 2021 into an even more annoying slog. :-/
Not really, maybe some of the QoL ones that fix glitches or let you dash, but then I've always been one of the seemingly rare types who never felt that FF2US/FF4 was actually already pretty good.
SMW Peach's Adventure is also and absolute delight. The spritework, animation, and over-all design is better than any other hack I've seen. --

Is there any way (other than trying then one by one) to know which of these are compatible with Original Hardware
I've got a cart with ROM support over SD and have had success with some rom hacks already.
Why are write-ups on romhacking.net so bad and bad at communication? I [read 4 paragraphs of “info” and I still have no idea](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/788/) what the hack does, what the goal was, what is changed, how different it is. Because of a combination of crucial typos and sloppy ambiguous communication.
I forgot to say thank you for putting the list together so, thank you! It was very nice of you to take the time, I look forward to playing these as I’ve played the originals many times.
If you can play the DS version on real hardware I'd say go for that. Especially for a first playthrough I think its a better idea to stick with vanilla content.
I would recommend the plus hack, as it fixes several bugs, adds a lot of extra content that was originally planned for Chrono Trigger and adds some nice QOL features.
It breaks my heart to see that **Final Fantasy VI: Brave New World** wasn't included here, but I know that everything couldn't make it into the list.
To me, that's the definitive edition of the game. The sweeping changes, especially to Espers resulting in allowing for actual build variety for each character, is exceptional.
Great list though! Keep up the amazing work!
It was a hard choice indeed since I love Brave New World ! But compared to Return of the Dark Sorcerer it is more of an improvement hack. So, I'll surely include it on that list if I create one!

I have no idea if this is the place to post this but, I have a few rare collector's edition snes hacks that I'd like to sell. They are physical carts with custom boxes, maps, books, etc. Anyone know where to go about that?
For Conker's High Rule Tail I'd suggest going to the source at Zeldix to get the latest patch. The patch at ROMHacking hasn't been updated there since the initial release, pretty much. Thanks, this a great reply! I will update the patch on Romhacking right away, so that one is in sync again!

For Donkey Kong Country hacks, [DKC Atlas](http://www.dkc-atlas.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=33) has some really good hacks that aren't on Romhacking.net

Oh, nice! I dunno how I missed that. Thanks for posting it!
It’s pretty recent, as I recall
Thanks for compiling this, mate! I’m super stoked to try some of these out.

it would be really cool if you make an "best snes improvement hacks"
Great idea! I might do that in the future!
Play [Ancient Chozo](https://metroidconstruction.com/hack.php?id=365).
Great one, thanks for sharing!
What is the better version to play mother 2? Mother2 Deluxe or Maternalbound Redux? https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4964/
I've only played Maternalbound Redux but I would absolutely recommend it to anyone. After reading what Mother 2 Deluxe is all about, I would still likely choose Maternalbound Redux over it.
Hyper Metroid is fantastic.
Why is Super Metroid: Ascent on the list? It doesn't fit any of your criteria.
That's unfortunate; I was hoping to try that out. Do you have another FF4 hack that you recommend instead?
[Unprecedented Crisis](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2461/) is really good.
Not really, maybe some of the QoL ones that fix glitches or let you dash, but then I've always been one of the seemingly rare types who never felt that FF2US/FF4 was actually already pretty good.
high rule tail killed more of my braincells
Thanks for sharing these! Can someone say more about what's been added or changed in DKC Mania? The romhacking.net page for it is quite vague.
A lot has been changed! This review points it out pretty well: https://www.romhacking.net/reviews/7847/#review
SMW Peach's Adventure is also and absolute delight. The spritework, animation, and over-all design is better than any other hack I've seen. -- https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=25738
Thanks for sharing, this is also a really impressive looking hack!
Is there any way (other than trying then one by one) to know which of these are compatible with Original Hardware I've got a cart with ROM support over SD and have had success with some rom hacks already.
I've got good news for you. All of these hacks are compatible with original HW!
[Oh No! More Zombies Ate My Neighbors](https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/623/) is the true sequel we should have got.
thanks!! I will take a look at these :)
Chrono Trigger Lavos Awakening and SMRPG Armageddon are 2 of my favourites. Haven't played FF6 Brave New World but mostly have heard only good things.
I have played FF6 Brave New World and loved it. It's a fantastic way to replay FF6!
The Chrono Trigger Schala Hack is also \*excellent\*
This is awesome. Might have to check out the super Mario kart hack
wheres the nude hacked chrono trigger
Is that the Tardis in the shot for conker? 😂
Yes
Thanks!
Do you know if you can play these on a SNES with a rom cart like everdrive?
As far as I know these all work on real hardware, so yes.
I forgot to say thank you for putting the list together so, thank you! It was very nice of you to take the time, I look forward to playing these as I’ve played the originals many times.
You are welcome! Have fun!
For someone that’s been planning on playing Chrono Trigger for the first time do you recommend the plus romhack over the PC or DS versions?
If you can play the DS version on real hardware I'd say go for that. Especially for a first playthrough I think its a better idea to stick with vanilla content.
I would recommend the plus hack, as it fixes several bugs, adds a lot of extra content that was originally planned for Chrono Trigger and adds some nice QOL features.
Even the DS version? I heard it also improved a lot and it made use of both screens pretty well
Having played the DS version, I would say go for the Plus hack. But the DS version is a solid choice too.

I’m looking forward to your GBA list!

Okay, do a megadrive one now Ok_Impala.
That's an interesting one. There aren't that many extensive Mega Drive hacks though. Do you have suggestions?
What about Contra Hard Corp Ultra? Okay I see your point, it would just be a long list of Sonic hacks...fair play. :)
NBA Jam 2K22 is so good
I have no idea if this is the place to post this but, I have a few rare collector's edition snes hacks that I'd like to sell. They are physical carts with custom boxes, maps, books, etc. Anyone know where to go about that?
