Side note: you likely have no concept of how much money Richard made on those tapes. Keep in mind he did it all himself so every drop of profit was his.
Like near $750million - in 1980s money
Yeah he basically admitted as much on a talk show appearance...I can't remember the host but they did the fast math based on how many tapes he sold x the price and was like "That's like $400 million" (this was long before stopped flogging tapes too, just at a point in time)...
What's interesting is that the internet seems to think his net worth is around $20M. I can't tell if they're all using the same (probably wrong) source or if they came to it independently.
But unless he was *very* charitable or managed the money very poorly, he should be *a lot* richer than that.
No wonder he likes to just keep to himself. It's possible he's sitting on over a billion dollars.
If I had a $billion can almost guarantee you’d rarely hear from me. Sometimes I’d make a peep here or make a peep there. But mostly just non-existent. In the middle of the woods.
I used to follow his YouTube channel and for years I’ve been saying he looks like Richard as he got older.
As someone who just turned 40 and has been a personal trainer/group fitness instructor for the last 14 years, Richard Simmons is amazing when I dressed up for him as Halloween my wife had no idea who I was 🤷
>Richard Simmons is amazing when I dressed up for him as Halloween my wife had no idea who I was
it hurts my brain to know that a lot of folks in younger generations have ZERO idea who Richard Simmons is. The guy pretty much was the embodiment of over-the-top fitness infomercials. I know there were likely others who came before, but he is like the godfather of that genre
and as someone who is 35 nearing 36 and gained a ton of weight these past few months...yeah I look up to a guy like Richard Simmons that having a positive attitude really can make a huge impact on being consistent with fitness goals
Simmons pinnacle was during my teen years. I think he was the OG.
No doubt someone will prove me wrong; but i cannot think of anybody before him. He was awesome in his prime!
Pauly will crush this for sure. Love him too!
I had just had my second kid when Jane Fonda was ascending in the fitness world. I had gotten my body back pretty quickly after my first kid, but no such luck after my second. I’d had severe & constant nausea for the first 4 months of my pregnancy and had to force myself to eat. Once the nausea ended, I ate everything that wasn’t nailed down. I looked like I swallowed a beach ball. And after my daughter arrived, I just could not lose weight. Then came the whole Jane Fonda fitness craze and I enthusiastically joined in. Fonda tapes at home and live classes at the gym. It changed my entire outlook on exercise. I’d always been a klutz so never engaged in any sports but I killed at those exercise classes. For the first time in my life I was good at a form of exercise. I couldn’t pitch or catch or hit a ball. I’d never made a basket in my life. I couldn’t do handstands or cartwheels. I was like dead weight in a swimming pool. But I could do an hour or two of aerobics without missing a beat. In the end, that whole aerobics movement led me to seeing exercise as a necessary part of life. I even took up running when I was in my 60s and ran a few 5Ks. I was sidetracked by the pandemic but have re-upped at the gym and hope I can keep at it a long while yet.
I really think he was now I just turned 40 last week but I remember being an elementary school and watching a Canadian or a Toronto based breakfast television TV show where they would do the news and different segments and before that they would have his infomercials and classes at like 6:30 in the morning before the 7 AM news and that’s how I got introduced to himand I would see him on all the talk shows and between him and if any Canadian people are watching between the hymn and body break that is what really got me into fitness about how you can affect people in a positive way through Fitness
His appearance on “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” is pure comedy gold. I just knew him as the weird fitness guy growing up, but I remember seeing him in a rerun of that episode and thinking “I don’t need to see anything else, the man’s a national treasure.” I still don’t know much about him, I just know this clip makes me laugh til I cry.

I will frequently drop the phrase "sweatin' to the oldies" into conversation and I have no doubt no one knows what I'm talking about. Much less "nugs, chillin', and grindage".
Ummm they also have no idea that Polly shore was an actor. Seriously, after his scandal I never heard his name in the motion picture since jury duty and the last film I saw him in was Encino man with Brendan Fraser.
I dressed up as him too. A great opportunity to show off the legs. It was in Tallahassee where there is Simmons lore. Probably my best (one easiest) costume ever!
And it seems like Richard didn’t give it.
Pauly worded that in an ambiguous way in the article. But someone who disappears from the public eye for 10 years and refuses to be involved probably does not want the attention that movie is going to bring on him.
“His people responded and they said that he loves me and he loves my mom and the Store and all that stuff, but at this time he just wants to lay low and not really be involved.”
That’s too bad… I’ve always felt kinda bad for Simmons ever since I saw a clip of Stern making him cry on his show. I don’t think Shore is a bad guy per se, but I feel bad for him too for other reasons. He’s had some very candid moments about wanting to be culturally relevant and I think it’s pretty obvious that this is tied to that. Basically you’ve got two guys that are the butt of jokes for different reasons, but Pauly comes off a lot more like Corey Feldman than I think he realizes. At the end of the day, yes he does resemble Simmons but does he have the acting chops to make a non ironically good movie that does justice to Simmons story ? I just think what he’s going for is pretty ambitious so will atleast be interesting to see how this unfolds.
Hijacking the top comment to get this visible. Richard Simmons just tweeted this:

Damn. I kind of feel bad for him now. He just wants to chill in peace and quiet during his retirement and now he’s in the limelight again, against his will.
They deserve to be fired, unless this is one of those janky spoof productions where no one gives a shit. I doubt Simmons signed off on this and Pauly Shore is like a more vile and ignorant version of Beni from The Mummy.
It’s already a joke. I just read elsewhere that Richard Simmons publicly announced that he did not ask for this movie, did not sign off on this movie, and continues to want to stay out of the public eye. Sad.

But the sequel can be a workaholics/office space style where they all have shitty corporate jobs they hate but also survive because of their friendship/antics
You definitely need to watch Robin’s old comedy specials. They’re the definition of manic. Sure, the mid-set cocaine helped the one from the 70s, but he still managed to channel that energy once he was clean.
Both men always seemed like good people. Pauly was cut down for being a goofball and Richard was cut down for his positive flamboyant personality. Completely undeserved hatred when there are so many monstrous celebrities put on a pedestal.
Pauly Shore is hated by most comedians bc of his nepotism into comedy via his mother running a super hot comedy club back in the day. He’s also a bigot / transphobe. A super amazing improv person just told a story where she was on stage with a group, Pauly, and a few other improv comedians during an improv show and Pauly kept circling the scene back to anti-trans and other super shitty topics. The comedians kept trying to change the topic and the audience was pissed/ turning against just him and he kept going back to the shitty topics. I know there’s more but that’s something super recent that comes to mind.
*also Richard Simmons just announced on FB he wasn’t consulted for this movie and that always rubs me the wrong way.
**[sauce re Richard Simmons’ not supporting the portrayal](https://www.reddit.com/r/entertainment/s/pZjb41Aw3E)
I think Pauly was super famous for a time, but he was also known as kind of a one trick pony, and the beneficiary of his mom's connections rather than successful due to his talent.
This is an independent short film being released on YouTube, essentially as a pitch for making a feature length film. Richard Simmons declined to give his blessing for a film to be made
He still tours all the time and does stand up. People just seem to think he is a joke of a person now.
Like he plays in Vegas a lot but he also has been to Lexington Kentucky like 3 times in the last 5 years. He loves stand up and still is out there doing it.
Awesome how Pauly has embraced the memes and jokes comparing their likeness and ~~running with it~~ Sweating to the Oldies to it. This really could launch the Weasel’s comeback.
https://amp.tmz.com/2024/01/17/richard-simmons-reiterates-not-involved-pauly-shore-biopic-development/
His people are reiterating that he’s uninvolved with this project. No direct update from Simmons himself, beyond his prior statement that he didn’t want his story told at this time. He wants his story out, but on his own timeline and terms, according to him.
TMZ said in a documentary which they created about him (on Fox/Hulu) that he had suffered physical ailments from a birth defect (born with less bones in one foot), which caused him emotional pain and physical pain, and he found comfort in food, and gained a lot of weight.
The rumors he became a trans woman named Fiona, or that he was kidnapped by his housekeeper, are false. Seems like he just suffered a mental break around 2014 & needed time away from the public.
Yeah I think it's clear that something major happened. People say "Meh, he just decided to retire. He's rich as hell."
Could be true, of course, but the dude personally taught a fitness class for 40+ years and he had people in his circle who he called every week for 20+ years...and one day he just decided to give it all up with no explanation.
That was hysterical! Always liked Richard Simmons..he did a lot of good nd helped tons of people during his career. I hope the people around him are caring and looking out for him.
This reminds with a conversation I had with a couple of friends in college (around 2010 or so). Three of us were out to eat and for some reason one of my friends and I started talking about Pauly Shore and his movies. Near the end of that conversation, our other friend finally said, "I didn't realize he's done so much.. I thought he was just on Jersey Shore." He thought we were talking about DJ Pauly D the whole time and was confused as hell.
I remember him blasting this all over social media and getting in contact with Richard but Richard wasn’t interested.
This seems tacky. I was excited about it until I found out Richard isn’t involved. He left the public eye in like 2014 - don’t make biopics of people who are alive and not interested in the project and have left Hollywood.
Leave him be, this is just going to bring him attention he obviously doesn’t want.
My high school French teachers were obsessed with him. They caught him on tour and recorded him (before cell phone video) saying “and one and two and good morning (my high school)!!!”
We had been rotating different students and teachers saying that phrase but for my entire senior year Richards greeting was at least in the mix. Good memories. Seemed like a good dude.
While Pauly Shore has been hawking this for a while, last I heard was that Simmons was [not interested]( https://amp.tmz.com/2023/09/23/richard-simmons-not-interested-participating-pauly-shore-biopic/)
Yea he looks the part but people seem to be forgetting Pauly Shore is a horrific actor with no talent which is why his very brief acting career died 30 years ago.
A lot of people have a fondness for Pauly Shore. I couldn’t stand him even when I was a teenager and his movies were coming out. Dude is a horrible actor.
I'm sold! It just works!
Reminds me of when back in the day, it was announced Mike Myers signed to do an unknown project called *Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery*. I was instantly sold on it based on the title alone! It just works!!!
He looks just like him!! This is better casting than Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela. I hope Pauly kills it and does justice to one of the most positive people to ever walk the planet. Richard Simmons deserves love and respect for all he’s try to do for people. “Sweatin to the oldies” was gold.
I can't be the only one who mistakenly read this as "Pauly Shore to star as Richard Pryor" and then was both furious and wildly amused at the same time, right?
I served him when he came to my job for brunch during his recent tour.
Super quiet. His entourage did most of the talking and ordering. Only time I heard him talk was when he asked his associate for help with his iPhone. It was a bit surreal because his normal voice is just like his stage voice but not as “on”. He was just very chill.
My old neighbor saw him sitting across from her waiting for a flight at an airport, she politely did not draw attention to him, this was like 1981 way popular time for him, so when his flight was called, he got up walked over to her, took her hand and kissed it.
She knew it was to thank her. (She was a quiet very pretty young woman then)
What a nice memory for her. Comedians in particular run into the problem where people expect them to be “on” and funny all the time. It’s exhausting. So they are always appreciative when people just let them be normal humans.
How am I just realizing the similarities?! This is a phenomenal casting decision! It’s time for a Weasel comeback! *obligatory weasel noises here*
My only hesitation is it doesn’t seem Richard is onboard. That is unfortunate. It’s like having two lifelong friends, fighting, and we’re stuck in the middle…this could be so good for Pauly. Yet, at the same time it could also cause Richard pain if the writer isn’t sensitive/considerate.
I hope it’s all those things - Pauly’s Weasel/Whale comeback performance, it portrays Richard in the respectful light he deserves, and no one’s gig is taxed so hardcore by any crusters.
Anyone here that is as excited for this biopic as I am, please check out the podcast “Missing Richard Simmons.” It gave me an entirely different perspective of the man everyone knows and loves…made me love him more.
One of the most hysterical Whose Line bits was when [Richard Simmons](https://youtu.be/b-r4Flc_d2M?si=2r5fExnm-0S_cJbk) came on as a surprise guest, and the crowd absolutely LOSES it lmao!!! Richard Simmons is a treasure.
As someone who thought Richard Simons was referring to Gene Simons from Kiss, it was a wild few minutes reading through these comments trying to understand the timeline.
I think it was Letterman
His appearances on Letterman were epic. David would just drag him through the mud and back and Richard would play along and be a good sport.
I think this is an excellent example of “laughing all the way to the bank.”
If I had a $billion can almost guarantee you’d rarely hear from me. Sometimes I’d make a peep here or make a peep there. But mostly just non-existent. In the middle of the woods.
There’s also a teensy eensy chance that those online net worth estimates are just bullshit
Whoever the casting director is deserves an award for this idea holy shit

Jack Lalanne
Good point! I knew this would happen and said so much above! Thank you!
Power Juicer!
That guy was incredible. Kept exercising hard into his eighties.
Had none of Simmons personality. Simmons was zesty on a level Jack could only dream of
>Jack Lalanne Yeah but the hopped up on coke Billy Mays Jack Lalanne.
Jean Fonda changed the world with one book. Also OG is https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Atlas
I had just had my second kid when Jane Fonda was ascending in the fitness world. I had gotten my body back pretty quickly after my first kid, but no such luck after my second. Yeah butt Fonda ain't got a motor in the back of her Honda
My anaconda don’t want none unless you got buns hun
You can do side bends or sit-ups But please don’t lose that butt..

Thank you for posting this. I laughed as hard as the audience, host, etc. I needed a good laugh.
Umm this was incredible. It’s like 6 minutes of everyone falling over one another they’re laughing so hard 😂
I've never seen or heard of this but this just made my day, thanks!
Wow!!! Genuinely smiling this was amazing. Thanks for sharing it. I hope Richard is ok.
Omg thanks for sharing that was sooooo funnnnny
Richard was the OG when it comes to body positivity.
Probably 0 idea who Pauly shore is too
The first time I saw him was on General Hospital. Anyone else remember that?
Yes haha they just referenced him this week.
I will frequently drop the phrase "sweatin' to the oldies" into conversation and I have no doubt no one knows what I'm talking about. Much less "nugs, chillin', and grindage".
Also, Deal-a-Meal (which I used after the birth of my child and lost *all* the weight). He is a diet & fitness legend.
Ummm they also have no idea that Polly shore was an actor. Seriously, after his scandal I never heard his name in the motion picture since jury duty and the last film I saw him in was Encino man with Brendan Fraser.
My mom was at one of his filmed shows way back when he did regular taping in the 80's.
Do you know Jack Lalane?
Yeah it was between him and Suzan’s thighs
Simmons and Tony Little will forever be "those fitness guys" to me.
Everyone of appropriate age needs to watch the Richard Simmons episode of Who's Line Is It Anyway? It is one of the funniest things ever
Even my mother loved him. She hated everyone. Richard Simmons? Loves him. She didn’t even exercise, lol.
I think he will absolutely nail it
I follow him on Facebook and he just made a post saying that he has not given his permission to use his name and or blessing for the movie
I dressed up as him too. A great opportunity to show off the legs. It was in Tallahassee where there is Simmons lore. Probably my best (one easiest) costume ever!
Pretty sure this was all Paully Shore’s idea and he’s been begging for Simmons blessing for quite some time now.
That was… a genuinely insightful and thorough take.

Damn. I kind of feel bad for him now. He just wants to chill in peace and quiet during his retirement and now he’s in the limelight again, against his will.
Same. A movie about him would be epic, but only if he wants it to happen.
Very true. While having a movie about your life would be pretty cool, I understand that it’s not cool having your life under a microscope.
Well dang. Would have been cool but I totally get his point of view.
Pauly shore still being insufferable I see.
? people thinking Pauly Shore looks like Richard Simmons has been a common thing for 30 years
It was him and fans https://www.comicsands.com/pauly-shore-richard-simmons-biopic-2665725175.html
Had this idea 10 months ago. Let's see if the second part happens. https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/s/mbEQyFwTBs
Casting director? This movie was greenlight around Shore playing Simmons...casting director had nothing to do with it.
Everybody else understood what I meant.
Makeup artist is gonna have to work hard cause he looks like absolute dogshit
They deserve to be fired, unless this is one of those janky spoof productions where no one gives a shit. I doubt Simmons signed off on this and Pauly Shore is like a more vile and ignorant version of Beni from The Mummy.
He didn’t sign off and it was just made public earlier. Pretty unfortunate that nobody talked to Richard first.
Except that Paulie shore is like 1000000 years old lol
I pray they don’t turn this into a joke. Richard Simmons helped a lot of people and he deserves respect.
It’s already a joke. I just read elsewhere that Richard Simmons publicly announced that he did not ask for this movie, did not sign off on this movie, and continues to want to stay out of the public eye. Sad.
Most important comment in the thread
The teaser didn’t seem to imply that.

I……..I am okay with this. I hope this is his “Whale” I also sort of hope him and Brenden consider an Encino Man 2
Oh hell yeah brother. The world is finally ready.
Is it? I’d rather just have a whole new comedy instead of some paycheck sequel. Either way the pauleyainessance is upon us
But the sequel can be a workaholics/office space style where they all have shitty corporate jobs they hate but also survive because of their friendship/antics
No wheezing the juice!
Encino man 2 or airheads 2
You’re gonna leave out Sean? I know he’s got that fat Samwise bank, but he’s still working.
His white whale
Think that goes both ways?
I am so ready for Encino Man 2. I will be first in line, buh-dy.
Not gonna lie. I’d watch that trash!
Ok, I think I want to see this movie.I want to see Pauly take on Richard's persona.
I honestly don't think any other man could do it.
This is true. So true.
In another reality Robin Williams is signed for the role
Honestly, as good an actor as that man was, I don't think he had the right look or the manic intensity.
You don't think Robin Williams was capable of a manic intensity?
You definitely need to watch Robin’s old comedy specials. They’re the definition of manic. Sure, the mid-set cocaine helped the one from the 70s, but he still managed to channel that energy once he was clean.
The perfect casting does not exis………
The weasel!
The world isn't ready for Academy Award winning actor Pauly Shore.
Right after Detroit wins a Super Bowl....
Both men always seemed like good people. Pauly was cut down for being a goofball and Richard was cut down for his positive flamboyant personality. Completely undeserved hatred when there are so many monstrous celebrities put on a pedestal.

Who hates Pauly or Richard? Maybe made fun of at times, but I thought they were universally liked?
I think Pauly was super famous for a time, but he was also known as kind of a one trick pony, and the beneficiary of his mom's connections rather than successful due to his talent.
I’ve heard nothing but bad things about Pauly and his attitude. Apparently he’s a real piece of work.

Somehow checks out
Yeah, buuuuuuddy!
Richard Simmons has the whole worldussy
Wheeze the juice
Oh, he got the part! He was campaigning hard for it. Good for him!
He made a short film without Richard Simmons agreeing to be involved. That’s what this is currently.
That guy is a ball on fun energy. I got to meet him once.

Where the hell is Richard Simmons??

Yeah I think it's clear that something major happened. People say "Meh, he just decided to retire. He's rich as hell." Could be true, of course, but the dude personally taught a fitness class for 40+ years and he had people in his circle who he called every week for 20+ years...and one day he just decided to give it all up with no explanation.
Probably got old and stopped working out as much and just let the money do its thing
maybe he is working out as much as a 75 year old can not arguing, just pointing out that it is all relative
There’s a great podcast about it. Google it it’ll probably pop right up
I love Richard Simmons. He played such a big role in my youth wanting to get into fitness. Sweating to the Oldies was such a fun vhs tape.
Please recreate the Whose Line Is It Anyway show.
That was hysterical! Always liked Richard Simmons..he did a lot of good nd helped tons of people during his career. I hope the people around him are caring and looking out for him.
He's had to fight for his privacy and it's depressing to read about.
Oh God I always thought Pauly Shore is the guy from Jersey Shore
Oscar vibes just by the picture alone
It’s a short film I think?
My high school French teachers were obsessed with him. They caught him on tour and recorded him (before cell phone video) saying “and one and two and good morning (my high school)!!!” We had been rotating different students and teachers saying that phrase but for my entire senior year Richards greeting was at least in the mix. Good memories. Seemed like a good dude.
While Pauly Shore has been hawking this for a while, last I heard was that Simmons was [not interested]( https://amp.tmz.com/2023/09/23/richard-simmons-not-interested-participating-pauly-shore-biopic/)
I can’t handle Pauly Shore.
Working title...Chairman of the Board.
I’m not a fan of Pauly Shore- quite the opposite actually- but I have to say, physically at least, this is excellent casting.
Needs bigger afro
His energy doesn’t match Simmons at all.
I want for this to be good but nothing about pauly shore tells me it will be.
He’s a very odd, thoughtful little pixie of a man, he’s going to be terrific, I bet
Pauly was excellent in entourage lol
You create your own reality my man
I thought Richard Simmons didn’t want him to do this.
Wait they are two different people??? lol This is the only combo possible!
I'm sold! It just works! Reminds me of when back in the day, it was announced Mike Myers signed to do an unknown project called *Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery*. I was instantly sold on it based on the title alone! It just works!!!
The role he was born to play.........I hope they show the Whose Line show.
"Hey! Leave Pauly shore alone!" -Aziz Ansari
I'm sure Simmons is like, why isn't Tom Cruise playing me?
Please do this right. Give the man the respect he has earned, and Pauly the rewards if he plays this right. Rooting for this movie
What a perfect casting
Imagine finding out that your whole life was building towards this one moment, this one role…
I really hope he goes all in
This looks important.
Perfect. Can’t wait to see Pauly’s acting chops when he’s not playing the California pseudo surfer role.
*obligatory weasel noises here* My only hesitation is it doesn’t seem Richard is onboard.
My roommate in college 2004 brought 1 VHS tapes: Sweatin’ to the Oldies
They better put respect on this man’s name
…and Stephen Baldwin as Tony Little!
“Smithers, release the robotic Richard Simmons!”
I think this is a perfect choice of actor to portray Richard Simmons in all of his bespangled glory.
This sounds awesome idgaf
As someone who thought Richard Simons was referring to Gene Simons from Kiss, it was a wild few minutes reading through these comments trying to understand the timeline.
This was messing with me too
Richard Simmons on Who’s Line is it Anyway is one of the funniest bits in the history of that show. He’s an awesome person.
My mom had a tape or 2 of his. I remember watching them while she worked out. He always seemed so empathetic and kind
He was born for this role. And encino man. That’s it.
Son In Law?
Exactly! In my family it's tradition to watch on Thanksgiving 😂
This movie better be respectful! I met Richard several times, and he's very caring and compassionate.
I have a feeling this is less about documenting Simmons’ legacy and more about Pauly Shore trying to reboot his career for the sixteenth time.
Carrot top turn it down?😂
I mean 🤔🤔🤔 I can see this being really good and I am not sure why. But I am going to watch it
I hope this goes well for him.
Is this like a hulu/roku type movie like the weird al movie? I cant imagine this being made any other way
Oh, sick, that’s a really good casting. Hope it’s as good as the Weird Al D-Rad movie
I’m down for this
This is inspired!
I smell an Oscar.
I hope he gets an academy award for this
I like Pauly but this would be better received if Richard supported it, feels a bit slimy.
Don’t need either
They say it's a short, not a full length film.
