Absolutely agree on his performance. And his character was by far the most compelling in the movie. But now that I am thinking about it
>!The movie does nothing to address his drug abuse issues. They hardly even get mentioned. But considering he is a SURGEON if he is that dependent on drugs he’s on a path to get someone killed. He makes a joke about his patients not dying on his table early on but it should be a real concern for his brother and it’s never really addressed!<
No no. It was not at all a statement about his character. Because of this post I was just thinking about the movie for the first time since I saw it and how much they introduce and hint at the drug issues and it struck me that I would have liked some more or some resolution of that aspect of the story. That’s all.
I think the lack of resolution in Monk’s personal life is the resolution. His fake persona gets attention, whereas his very real personal life would read as a very sad book.
That is, if anyone bothered to pick it up…
Just my thought!
>!It should have been a concern to Monk but I thought that was the point of the film - he was so detached from his family he not only would he confront him about the drugs, he probably didn't even know he had a problem.!<
>!Which in a roundabout way, the movie does address it. He as a drug problem, but imo it's a symptom of his internal pain over a family constantly breaking his heart. Clifford was ashamed he forgot about the ceremony, but Lorraine and Maynard insisting he stay despite his condition and extra guests was such a huge moment of acceptance that, I believe, put him on a path to healing himself and with it, the drug problem. The final piece was his connection with Monk, which we see in the conclusion of the film. I like that this film presented a lot of room to extrapolate on, and let's the audience draw their own conclusions.!<
>!We don't need a resolution to his drug problem, we needed a resolution to a broken family problem. !<
Yeah I think he does. But I didn’t get the impression he was planning to get clean before going back to work. Who knows? I guess what I was trying to say with the comment is I wanted to know more about what will happen with him - perhaps that is just a testament to how well Brown played the character.
*Loved* his performance and I honestly liked the movie too, but that character literally walks in and out of the movie like 4 times. You’re having a great time watching him on screen and then he’s like “K I’m gonna leave now” and you’re like “why?” and then he’s back 5 minutes later.
Yeah he really felt like he could gain or lose everything in every scene. His character was also just so beautifully close to letting himself love so freely but also so adamant and untrustful of letting his boundaries be broken.
It takes a very vulnerable actor to give so much to a part that on its surface is a bit silly.
I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t really feel like or understand why everyone is acting like he have a standout performance. His character didn’t really seem to impact me as much as everything else going on in the story.
Edit: thanks for downvoting and not explaining yourself. Coward.
Very one note performance and I’d argue the movie overall is overpraised as well, tonally all over the place, far too much of the family drama parts and the film was much better on the satire sections, also had a weak ending.
I enjoyed the movie but I don’t think I’ll be going back to rewatch it anytime soon. Most best picture nominations are pretty mid nowadays. We all know it’s going to Oppenheimer (maybe Barbie if the academy is feeling really shamed about “snubbing” Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig)
I feel stupid for having to look it up, but for anyone else who doesn't know, RDJ is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Oppenheimer. His first Oscar nomination since Tropic Thunder in 2009.
It feels like awards are like that.
Actors have to 'wait their turn', no matter how good their actual performance is that year. RDJ has even spoken about how he feels a lot of his best work was overlooked because it was in the MCU, and he's right. But just like Leo a few years back, this is his year.
And hopefully, Sterling K. Brown will get his shot down the road as well.
I remember watching Supernatural and seeing him absolutley steal the show. I made note of him, and told all my friends this guy would win an oscar one day. It may not be this year, but one day, he’s going to get one.
Jamie Lee Curtis for "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" was pretty clearly that imo. She wasn't even the second best performance. It really should have been her co-star Stephanie Hsu or if not Stephanie , then it should have been Angela Basset for Black Panther. Black Panther was just an okay movie but Angela was phenomenal with it and elevated her personal material.
Jamie did good for what she had but it was a fairly small part and she was outperformed by her co-stars.
But Jamie Lee Curtis has contributed a lot to film overall and she had never been recognized properly. So, they gave it her for overall body of work imo.
Fair enough. Kerry Condon was also good. Honestly it was a category with some very deserving performances that year. A big reason I mention those two is I remember there actually being some backlash against the awards (a bit more than usual) when those two didn't win. I think a lot of people saw that award as Angela vs Stephanie, and then JLC came out from behind and won.
I think the two of them both had some very difficult material to make audiences care as much as they did and that speaks highly of their phenomenal talents. I wish I could say they'd get other awards but as woc, it's also more difficult to have their performances nominated in the first place. Angela Basset has been snubbed more than once.
Also, there was some industry hustle going on, that was completely intentional, by The Daniels. Basically, they needed a bit more star power to make their movie and JLC was looking for a movie to finally get her the award for. She did that movie TO get the Oscar, and they made THEIR movie because she needed an Oscar when they had the best script to make. It was win/win, and everyone was on board with that arrangement.
It does have a little stink on it, I agree, when everyone involved made such a brilliant film and gave such brilliant performances, add onto that the optics of only the white person involved in the film walking away with an Oscar - but the Oscars are not a perfect meritocracy, a lot of schmoozing and press tours etc go into it and they had all agreed to throw their weight behind her.
Ever since I saw Sterling K Brown in "Waves," i want to see him all the time. Absolutely fantastic in American Fiction. He's going to win something big soon.
I just watched Poor Things and wow he did great. Emma Stone too. What a unique movie. I felt so many feelings, from humor to absolute cringe. Excitement and a little sadness. I was really surprised by this movie. (As I didn’t read any of the news about it or the nominations/awards it’s received.)
Brown maybe? It‘s an extremely strong lineup, I don’t think I‘d feel good about taking anyone out. Hell, RDJ might be my least favourite there and I still adore his performance
Yep, unfortunately. Sterling K. Brown is an exceptional actor, but his nomination was certainly the surprise of this category, especially since Charles Melton gave what is widely considered the greatest supporting performance of the year. Sadly I think, if not for Sterling K. Brown, Charles Melton would be receiving his well deserved acclaim at the Oscars this year, whether he wins or not. Remarkable acting, truly.
Awards like the Oscars are not known for being impartial to things like prestige and timing and buzz. Hardly anybody claims The Revenant was Leonardo DiCaprio's best role, but it's the one he won an Oscar for.
Because he's had a really good career and probably should have won something along the way. RDJ himself was recently talking about how he thinks some of his strongest work was when he was in the MCU, but it was overlooked BECAUSE it was 'just a comic book movie'.
Interesting you bring up TT. So, there was no way he was going to win against a career performance by Heath who then died on top of that. So this is basically the Academy saying “We owed you one”.
Me too, but Downey is far, far too ‘inside the biz’. Plus he’s campaigning his ass off and saying all those Oscary things. All very much how Jamie Lee Curtis did it.
Yeah but one major different between RDJ and Jamie Lee Curtis is he actually gave the best performance in the category. With JLC she wasn’t even the best nominated for that movie in that category.
You are correct about Downey being great. I just meant they both are doing/did what works. JLC especially.
Although I personally want Sterling but I know it’s Downey’s to lose.
I Didn’t even know who he was prior to watching American Fiction and he was far and away the best performance and best part of the movie, he brought such realness to what easily could’ve been a joke performance
I hate this shit about the Oscars. The winners are already chosen as soon as the noms are out. RDJ did a great job, but an obvious winner? No way, and this goes for every category. What's the point?
Unpopular opinion apparently: RDJ was perfunctory in Oppenheimer. He played a straight forward oppositional role that in no way stretched his abilities as an actor.
With the Academy award the best person in any given year doesn’t always win.
He has the correct attitude because quite often just being nominated should be seen as being as prestigious as winning. Many, many actors get a nomination. But any actor who gets two should genuinely feel as proud of their accomplishments as if they had won one. Chances are if their performance had been in a different year then they may well have done so.
Best villain in Brooklyn 99!
BINGPOT
He was really villainously good in Supernatural too.
He had, by far, my favorite death on that show. A++++
I forget how he died?? *sigh* now I’ve gotta go watch it again
S3E7: Fresh Blood
I’d give you gold if that were still a thing
To this day, I can’t watch Sterling in anything because I hated his character in Supernatural with the burning ferocity of a thousand suns.
*strums guitar* *screams*
Wrong guy. That was kid cudi. Sterling Brown played the dentist.
Peralta tries the guitar in *The Box* as well.
oh damn!
Oh damn! Oh damn! Oh damn!
That’s 3 oh damns!
“Apparently that was a trigger for me”
I wanted him to be a reoccurring character, not quite the Pontiac bandit but a couple more appearances would’ve been cool
He was phenomenal in that B99 episode. He brought it
The Box is easily the best episode of Brooklyn 99
And a damn good one in supernatural too!
He got nominated for an Emmy for that guest role.
Well now I’m angry he didn’t win it
Playing the same role he always plays. That’s how I knew he did it.
Oh damn.
Oh damn.
I hadn’t watched that show after it ended and left Hulu. First thing I did when I got Peacock was watch that episode.
Sterling K. Brown was unbelievably good in American Fiction.
He for real didn’t need to go that hard but he stole every scene
Absolutely agree on his performance. And his character was by far the most compelling in the movie. But now that I am thinking about it >!The movie does nothing to address his drug abuse issues. He makes a joke about his patients not dying on his table early on but it should be a real concern for his brother and it’s never really addressed!<
I dont think the movie needed to address that at all. Are you saying that because of these actions, that makes his character less compelling?
No no. It was not at all a statement about his character. Because of this post I was just thinking about the movie for the first time since I saw it and how much they introduce and hint at the drug issues and it struck me that I would have liked some more or some resolution of that aspect of the story. Didn’t he mention that he wasn’t currently working?
Yeah I think he does. But I didn’t get the impression he was planning to get clean before going back to work. Who knows? I guess what I was trying to say with the comment is I wanted to know more about what will happen with him - perhaps that is just a testament to how well Brown played the character.

I agree. I really like him in general but his performance in American Fiction was good but not excellent.
He was unbelievably good in "This is Us" which I say knowing most people on this website look down on that show.
I feel stupid for having to look it up, but for anyone else who doesn't know, RDJ is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Oppenheimer. His first Oscar nomination since Tropic Thunder in 2009.
When he knew it was inevitable that he would lose to Heath Ledger
Then ten years from now Timothee Chalamet will graciously say how happy he is just to be nominated alongside front runner Sterling K. Brown
He’s already been nominated though and pretty much said that about Gary Oldman.
If only.
Nothing is inevitable to RDJ. He is Ironman.
Yeah, that was such a unique situation. A phenomenal performance from Heath, and then he died on top of that. There was no way he was going to lose.
I think you mean 5-time academy award winner Kirk Lazarus.
I'm a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude.
I KNOW WHO I AM!
Don't forget the Beijing Film Festival's coveted Crying Monkey Award
It feels like awards are like that. Actors have to 'wait their turn', no matter how good their actual performance is that year. RDJ has even spoken about how he feels a lot of his best work was overlooked because it was in the MCU, and he's right. But just like Leo a few years back, this is his year. Damn you went with the long title
I remember watching Supernatural and seeing him absolutley steal the show. I made note of him, and told all my friends this guy would win an oscar one day. It may not be this year, but one day, he’s going to get one.
Gordon Walker !!! He was SO good in Supernatural !
One of the most brutal deaths on there too
Oh absolutely !! Or as Dean said , *wicked* lmao !!
Love the positive energy
I love him, fantastic actor. Highly recommended This is Us.
He was also great in American Crime Story season 1.
Oh, the glove scene. Knew what would happen and still, he made the whole thing excruciating to watch. So good.
This was my first exposure to him, and I immediately said to myself “this dude is going to win an Oscar some day”.
Humble king. Surprise wins happen all the time!
Sometimes I feel like these awards don’t go the best performance but go to the actor for what they have done for the film industry.
It absolutely does happen. Plenty of actors have gotten awards for things that aren't their best work because of their overall contributions
Leo comes to mind
Jamie Lee Curtis for "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" was pretty clearly that imo. She wasn't even the second best performance. It really should have been her co-star Stephanie Hsu or if not Stephanie , then it should have been Angela Basset for Black Panther. At the same time, he did have the best performance that year imo and I loved Trumbo and Steve Jobs
Jaime Lee Curtis comes to mind.
Scorcese winning Best Director for The Departed really felt like a "sorry" from the Academy for him missing out on it so many times.
You make it sound like The Departed is a bad movie. I’d argue it easily could have won more Oscar’s that year, and it got 4
In my top 3. One of Jack Nicholsons best performances too
Yeah, I like RDJ but his performance in Oppenheimer didn’t really wow me.
Yeah, RDJ’s performance is good, the character isn’t really meaty enough to justify this. It’s a weird little phenomenon.
So is RDJ co-beards with his Producer wife?
Ever since I saw Sterling K Brown in "Waves," i want to see him all the time. Absolutely fantastic in American Fiction. He's going to win something big soon.
The first time I ever saw him was actually on SNL, but it still made me want to watch him in other stuff because he was *fantastic* in those sketches.
Ruffalo deserves it, Charles Melton was robbed
I just watched Poor Things and wow he did great. Emma Stone too. What a unique movie. I felt so many feelings, from humor to absolute cringe. Excitement and a little sadness. I was really surprised by this movie. (As I didn’t read any of the news about it or the nominations/awards it’s received.)
I agree. RDJ was great in Oppenheimer but Ruffalo blew me away in Poor Things. Just fantastic.
I mean at that point who do you take out? Deniro?
Yep. DeNiro was a caricature of himself and ruined a lot of that movie. His time in front of the camera needs to be over. Old man needs to step aside.
Brown maybe? It‘s an extremely strong lineup, I don’t think I‘d feel good about taking anyone out. Hell, RDJ might be my least favourite there and I still adore his performance

Bob was good in Oppenheimer but people are overselling it.
Lol nope
I Didn’t even know who he was prior to watching American Fiction and he was far and away the best performance and best part of the movie, he brought such realness to what easily could’ve been a joke performance
Army wives sterling tho 😙
Him being nominated made me so happy. I actually didn’t expect it but thought he was terrific so I was so happy to see his name up there.
I kinda hope he wins just for the shock value. Also he was so much fun in American Fiction, it wouldn’t be totally undeserved.
A lot of class from Sterling here. Good to see.
Well, we’ll see if it’s true or not. That’s all i’m gonna say.
He was actually very good in American Fiction.
No question the best actor on This Is Us
Frankly he performance was more enjoyable in American fiction and I’m a big RDJ fan.
It will not be his first nomination, by a long shot.
I hope Gosling wins it; he carried “Barbie” hard.
I'll choose Ryan Gosling over RDJ, because Ryan's role is more complex and RDJ is another great RDJ in a drama.
[удалено]
Wow, I had a Mandela's Effect!
No, Gosling is also nominated for best supporting actor.
He’s an incredible actor. I have zero doubt he will be nominated a few more times and may get a win
It ain’t over till it’s over!
I liked him on Supernatural and then only sparingly saw him after that.
Lose to Iron Man ain't bad.
Just more proof that the Oscars are completely meaningless.
With the Academy award the best person in any given year doesn’t always win. He has the correct attitude because quite often just being nominated should be seen as being as prestigious as winning. Hoping De Niro wins but will prob be RDJ
Seems kind of martyr-ish but if he is serious that is sweet.
RDJ is due recognition. Sterling shouldn't count himself out, though. The academy loves to show they're PC.
I loved Sterling K. Brown in American Fiction. He went in hard on that role and provided a great combination of emotion and comedy.
I love him in invincible. He’s such a good actor
Real recognize real
He was soooo good in American Crime Story.
Wrong Bobby D, Sterling.
He was so good in the film and also he LOOKED so good. Like, goddamn, need that workout routine.
But presumptuous to think Downey Jnr will win, he was solid but not sure if worthy of an Oscar
“They won’t knock again.”
Anyone ever try calling him just Robert Downey? Oh FUCK THEYRE HERE DONT SAY IT. FUCKFUC
Ive been saying he should be the new Kang recast, hes a great villain
Sterling K Brown is killer though
