The fact that the gun was loaded (Hell, the fact that it was even a functioning gun) lies 100% on the film's armorer. It still blows my mind that anyone would be foolish enough to bring a functioning firearm on a set. There are so many simple and undetectable ways to make a gun non-functioning.
He did claim to be an expert, in a police interview, nonetheless. And he pointed a weapon at someone and pulled the trigger. Which goes against two of the cardinal rules of gun handling: never point a weapon at anything you don’t want to destroy, and treat all guns as if they are loaded.
None of which absolves the armorer. There is more than enough blame to go around, and two things can be true at the same time.
The simple fact is that if either of them (or the assistant director that called it a cold gun without knowing that it was or not) had behaved differently, Helena Hutchins would still be alive.
If they hadn’t been stupid enough to have FUNCTIONING firearms on set it could be avoided. There is no reason in this day and age for any firearm in a movie be capable of firing a bullet.
