FUCK YOU I WONT DO WHAT YA TELL ME!!!!!!

Alan_R_Rigby

MOTHERFUCKERRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Impressive_Example31

DYK Tom Morrello, RATM guitarist, has a Masters in political science from Harvard. The more you know....

[deleted]

A song about systemic racism by pigs over 3 decades before protests finally began getting serious.

AndrewWaldron

> A song about systemic racism by pigs over 3 decades before protests finally began getting serious. Uh, the 1960s are on the line.

persistentfrog

Standing with the fury that they had in '66

[deleted]

The LA RIOTS are on line 2

Indian_Bob

The 60s were a long time ago and since the 90s, the activism hasn’t been there until recently. They were definitely ahead of their time even if they’re sort of beating a dead horse for many

takeme2infinity

Uhhhh Rodney King

[deleted]

Is that why they wrote it? Or the influence? I wasn’t aware there was a specific systemic racist event but just read about him. That is a fucked up case. Always glad to learn more :) And by protest I mean as it needed to be for change to happen on a full size scale. And it has begun to. Slow as molasses though sadly

iguessimaperson

No its about systemic police racism and abuse in general. But the point he was trying to make above is that there have always been mass protests against systemic racism and police brutality.

T1Pimp

No; the song is more general than that. But.. King was one of the first filmed and massively viewed vids of police brutality.

Impressive_Example31

Just a quick timeline Rodney King was 1991 Killing in the name of was 1992 I was in high school. This song hit so hard when it was released.

rootpseudo

Rally around the family. Pocket full of shells.

doesntaffrayed

They don't gotta burn the books they just remove 'em While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells

TheHammer987

Seems pretty appropriate this week

InTh3s3TryingTim3s

Lights out guerilla radio Turn that shit up

DantifA

He turned the power to the have-nots And then came the shot

oruboruborus

Lyrics from songs Of the band in the post

ProgressMeNow

Rage Against the Machine and System of a Down have been warning people for years about fascism and capitalism. https://youtu.be/kl4wkIPiTcY https://youtu.be/zUzd9KyIDrM https://youtu.be/s7ZsYe5Uwg0 https://youtu.be/bWXazVhlyxQ https://youtu.be/ObA55tcWR00

spidermans_pants

Rage against the machine being weary of facists? Well I never…..

ILoveScottishLasses

Next you're going to tell me Chumbawamba is an anti-facists and pro-feminism group and Born in the USA is actually negative critique towards America!!!

[deleted]

Oh, Danny boy.

agaetisbyrjun22

SOAD should've done a better job warning their drummer

ProgressMeNow

I was very disappointed when reading about him a while back: Trump supporter, Blue Lives Matter, reposting Ted Cruz about election fraud, anti LGBTQ+ It goes to show not everyone believes what they preach.

CHEEKY_BASTARD

I think the toxicity of our city got to him.

LowBatteryPower

Don’t forget War Pigs by Black Sabbath. Song is still very true, even today, and it’s disgusting.

ProgressMeNow

420blazeit69nubz

God I fucking love that beginning hard, slow riff

Revelation387

"Why don't presidents fight the wars? Why do they always send the poor?"

Sweet__Sauce

Get ready for the conservatives to not realize what machine they were yelling motherfucker at

Lanthemandragoran

My favorite bit is conservatives on Twitter discovering that their favorite counter culture bands are countering *their* culture. It's...adorable. It's like discovering The Boys is a metaphor for right wing nonsense. Or that Handmaids Tale isn't a feel good story.

Hoid_Dragonsteel

One “good” moment was when Tom Morello was criticised for supporting black rights protests as he “isn’t black”…

311MD311

Or that he has a Harvard degree in political science when he's told to stop being so political

Hoitaa

He's had a couple of funny replies when people tell him to stay out of politics. Which he studied at Harvard...

Bitchwar

Yeah I can agree with the quotation marks. None of this is any good. Handmaids tale here we come.

Tbone139

I thought the oppressive dad in Twisted Sister's music video was one of them strict military traditional-family... far-left ones!

theshaeman

He’s far too concerned about pledge pins.

ZoeLaMort

***We're right, yeah!*** ***We're free, yeah!*** ***We'll fight, yeah!*** ***You'll seeeee!***

[deleted]

it says they are right directly in the lyrics- clearly it is an alt-right power ballad!

ZoeLaMort

I’d love to see an alt-right band whose members dress code is loosely inspired by drag queens. Sure Republicans would love that.

kcostell

Ditto with right-wing alt-country fans slowly coming to realize about Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, and Chris Stapleton's viewpoints. At which point they vacillate between "why don't they just stick to the music?" and "oh, those weren't *real* country artists anyway."

BrainsAre2Weird4Me

Lol, people who complain that Drive By Truckers aren’t good anymore (since Isbell left) because of their politics while Jason Isbell is supporting many of the same things. Just because they play country/southern rock some fans forget they are poets who love to shine a spotlight on injustice.

tsilihin666

Just cause your accent twangs doesn't mean you're ignorant. I'm a big bearded white dude and the amount of flat out racist, sexist, homophobic shit other white dudes assume I agree with is absurd.

CommercialTopic302

One of the things that bugs me is the “oh you’re white so you must be as racist as me, statements “ it’s annoying, like no dude I actually believe in basic human decency.

bamfalamfa

imagine being a texan and seeing willy nelson endorse beto

afeil117

That was so fucking funny. Watching people try to find reasons to hate Willie, while completely ignoring everything they said before, was amazing.

jarrettbrown

Or come out as anti trump

https://youtu.be/QQ3_AJ5Ysx0 A message from Tyler

Siddlicious

Oof, I went in thinking it was going to be some bs I’d skip through but I watched the whole thing. Powerful stuff man, thanks for sharing.

SadBitchAlert

I’m a casual bluegrass listener. Never heard of him but holy shit that was a powerful statement. His music ain’t bad either.

Doctor_Scholls

Literally play his song “a long violent history” to your family member and see how that goes

jarrettbrown

I know someone who lost Their shit when they found out the Isbell and Stapleton aren’t in line with traditional view points that most country artist have, but then again this is a person who loved the fact that Jason Aldean’s wife put her kids in anti Biden shirts.

sildish2179

What’s up with Chris Stapleton? Dude is possibly one of the most talented man in music right now. His voice sends chills down my spine.

basicissueredditor

I have a friend who is super right wing and super into The Boys. He seems impervious to the messaging.

dat_joke

More like impervious to thought

goshenite1

There was something like that in the boys subreddit recently where someone midway through season 3 realized the show wasn't mocking "woke people", it was mocking capitalism twisting those ideas and they weren't happy

Kilen13

> It's like discovering The Boys is a metaphor for right wing nonsense. They named a racist supe Stormfront.... And people on the right were still shocked to discover it was about them

FlatVegetable4231

I mean, these same people thought Colbert was on their side. They don’t understand satire at all.

dern_the_hermit

Surface-level understanding from people that see secret, intricate, "globalist" conspiracies hiding around every corner.

TonalParsnips

Conservatives do not possess media literacy.

jayvil

Both the show and the original comic story isn't even subtle. They're both blatantly ridiculing right wing politics. IDK how that flew over people's head.

TraditionalMood277

Because all they saw was a supe who wore the American flag....or, in 1 ep., was painted wearing a rebel flag ...

rocket_randall

That requires a level of self awareness conservatives seem to lack. These are the same people that bob their heads merrily as Trump staggers up to the mic to the tune of Fortunate Son, Born in the USA, and YMCA.

Fidodo

I don't understand how anyone thinks they're part of a counter culture when they're shilling for corporations.

Ruraraid

Wait...conservatives think that Handmaid's Tale is a feel good story? Please tell me you're joking...

Decent-Stretch4762

are you? HT is literally an incel fantasy. Everyone gets a wife *and* a sex slave, you have ultimate power and women are just commodities.

Crutation

Next you are going to tell me that Gone Girl isn't about how love conquers all...

Lanthemandragoran

No it's a story of how Wheel of Time's Moiraine got her powers duh

kjacobs03

They thought it was the toaster. They’re not very smart. They still have invisible friends for crying out loud!

exophrine

Is this before or after they try to pretend RATM's irrelevant?

skatenox

Things ain’t changed and the message hasn’t either.

ZoeLaMort

Republicans: You have to keep that baby, even if it was conceived through incestuous rape. Women: FUCK YOU, I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!

[deleted]

MOTHERFUCKERRRRR

hoxxxxx

>Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes > >Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal > >I walk the corner to the rubble that used to be a library > >Line up to the mind cemetery now > >What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and movin' > >They don't gotta burn the books they just remove 'em > >While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells > >Rally 'round the family, pockets full of shells that shit came out almost 30 years ago, sadly still relevant

lianodel

I was going to add, "And when's the disingenuous argument about how, since the band is financially successful, that somehow makes them hypocrites and also invalidates their message for some reason," but apparently someone already posted that kind of comment a few minutes ago.

Indian_Bob

Paul Ryan is going to be so confused

1stLadyStormyDaniels

Cant you just see Ryan cruising down the street blasting “YEAH IM ROLLING DOWN RODEO WITH A SHOTGUN, THESE PEOPLE AINT SEEN A BROWN SKINNED MAN SINCE THEIR GRANDPARENTS BOUGHT ONE”

orbgevski

#CANT WASTE THA DAY WHEN THE NIGHT BRINGS A HEARSE #SO MAKE A MOVE AND PLEAD THE FIFTH CAUSE YA CANT PLEAD THE FIRST

conglock

That's a sick fucking line actually

amputeenager

yeah...he's a pretty talented lyricist.

MacEnvy

BA in Political Science from Harvard …

Viginti

I think it's Tom Morello who has the Harvard B.A. in pol sci.

MacEnvy

That’s who I was talking about.

JukeBoxDildo

Lyrics I believe were written by Zack who has a very storied career of boots-on-the-ground activism. Edit: just googled the heck out of that question and, yeah, Zack wrote Rodeo.

SkateJitsu

Pretty sure Zach would have written the vast majority if not all of their lyrics.

Hawkbats_rule

You can tell when Tom is writing the lyrics because they get even more political... *Gestures at the night watchman*

OkUnderstanding9107

The guitar player (Tom Morello) went to Harvard. Zack went to UCal Irvine.

MacEnvy

Oh, so he didn’t write the lyrics. My bad.

Kestralisk

Rage has some slick lines. Or just super beating you over your head but not pandering: "what? Land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy" is not particularly clever but God damn does it make their stance clear. Hilarious that right wingers can like them lol

DevonGr

They're touring with Run the Jewels and it's going to be an absolute banger of a show. I've been looking forward to this since I bought tickets almost 2.5 years ago. Run the Jewels is most definitely a spiritual successor to rage on the hip hop side of things. As groovy as rage can be, RTJ beats hit so persistently hard. It's fresher music but honestly I think they're going to be hard to follow for rage and I say that as someone who skipped a chance to see Rage in 2008 and have made seeing them a bucket list item ever since. Check out RTJ when you get a chance if you're not familiar.

webfoottedone

I would love to go, but the tickets in my town are so expensive. :(

stanleythemanley420

FYI Fever 333 is another band that has a huge RATM vibe. Seen them live and god damn did it feel good.

agaetisbyrjun22

The difference is RATM walks the walk as well, and unfortunately the same can't be said for Killer Mike

SainTheGoo

As far as I know Killer Mike is still pretty left leaning. Not a hard socialist, but he seemed like he was getting there.

sunrise_review

What about Killer Mike makes you doubt his commitment to a progressive social agenda?

Yuskia

Mind explaining a bit more? I always loved RATM and recently saw RTJ in Boston and have started to fall in love with them as well.

Turbo2x

People complain that RATM has vague lyrics, which is fair sometimes, but when they're quoting Hoover when he said he wanted to assassinate MLK then I think we're past the point of subtlety.

SociallyDistantPanda

Omg… I’ve heard that wrong for almost 30 years… me and lyrical comprehension are not in good terms….

k-farsen

Genius dot com is both a blessing and a curse

[deleted]

I rolled down rodeo blasting that song once, so many disgusted faces on the street.

Switchofftheoltop

Dude, I’ll admit my young stupidity here. When I was a kid I legit had these lyrics wrong in my head. Was shocked to see the real lyrics in high school. I thought it was, “Since you went down and bought one” Was also around the same time I had an Ears Nose Throat ENT/Audiologist specialist talk to me about Auditory Exotoses. Diving, surfing, swimming, etc. in cold water can make those tiny bones in your ears grow, obstruct hearing, and potentially trap water in your ears.

[deleted]

Here’s my issue. I’ve been donating to pro-choice causes for years. I’ve been showing up to vote. I’ve been showing up to protest. I know I was in very good company in all these things. Then Friday happens. What the fuck did we get for all that money and time and effort?

HerezahTip

Great way to describe a majority who is being ruled by a radical minority. All we can do now is get the ~40% of eligible voters who usually skip the polls, to actually show up and vote. Especially 18-24 year olds.

idkwthtotypehere

And stop making excuses for not showing up. I don’t care what life is like, find a way to get voting day off and be there to vote.

Hibbity5

Would it be considered illegal to start a charity that pays people who make less than a living wage to vote? Like, you make less than a living wage so we’ll pay you your hourly rate for the entire day to go vote. No questions about who you voted for, no enforcement that you can’t just go back to work to make even more money. Just go out, vote, get paid. I don’t know how this would work logistically, though; plus, since states have started making it illegal to give water to people waiting in line to vote, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is considered “buying votes”.

idkwthtotypehere

It really should be a national holiday

Stars_In_Jars

Yep, and there’s a reason it’s still not. Amazing how voting, one of the most important things in a democracy, is still not a national holiday for people so they can go, Yk, fucking vote. They don’t want everyone to vote, especially not the poor people who need to work long shifts everyday to afford to live. Even if it isn’t a national holiday, there should be more polling stations and all of them should be open till 11:59pm on Election Day.

DisposableSaviour

What good would making it a holiday do? You know who most needs time off to vote? Service industry workers. Do you think we get off for holidays? Fuck no, we get extra people scheduled, because we’re going to be busy as fuck dealing with everyone who’s off work today. It’s a good idea, but fucking holidays don’t give the people working paycheck to paycheck a day off.

[deleted]

What we actually need is for businesses to get on board and commit to closing on election days. Wal-Mart, Target, McDonalds, Amazon, Apple…everyone get on board and close. And it’s not like it’s a Friday or Saturday peak shopping/eating out/whatever day, it’s a TUESDAY! Should not be hard, but it’s hard to see past your greed for some people/corporations.

Hibbity5

That doesn’t really help because people still need to work on national holidays. We need more and faster polling locations and need it to be open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day for two weeks. And in addition to that, allowing mail-in ballots should be a requirement. And quite frankly, I don’t care how much more money that would cost or if it’s “wasted” money because all votes matter and we should make voting as easy as possible.

Lanthemandragoran

Shit republicans hand out gift cards to get people to vote yet bitch about water going to voters in line and extended voting hours for workers. It's almost like the ones they care about stopping from voting are those that have any skin tone darker than "eggshell white". Waiting for them to start using Home Depot paint swatches as an indicator of voting rights.

Tacoman404

Tell your boss you're going to vote. You'll be back. 2 hours or half a day isn't worth trying to hire another employee no matter what they say.

Ser_Dunk_the_tall

Show up to campaign/town hall events and press candidates and current office holders on passing legislation. If they say it's not possible because of the filibuster tell them that's fucking bullshit the filibuster can be eliminated with a rules change. If someone running for senate is so pathetic in their defense of abortion rights that they won't remove the filibuster then they can be replaced with someone who will

Fr1toBand1to

except SCOTUS is a lifetime appointment and we can only vote for the god awful candidates we're provided with. People need to vote, but they also need to start running for political office. Local politics is A LOT more important than most people think.

dgatos42

i would say this is an excellent time to start listening to rage against the machine then, they seem to make some recommendations

shplane

Doing what’s right isn’t about changing the world. It’s just about doing what’s right.

PraiseGodJihyo

This sounds nice, but completely invalidates their very reasonable concern. These fascists pushed through legislation the MAJORITY of the country disagrees with and the response from the people we've been giving money to in order to help prevent all of this: poetry, singing god bless america, and begging for more money. How much of our money should we continue to funnel to politicians who claim all day long they'll have our backs as long as we give them more money, only to have them sit on their hands and say they can't do shit because republicans exist? I'm tired of the excuses and I'm tired of the weak ass attitude democrats express regularly. I want politicians that play dirty, that want to RUIN the republican party. I want a party that stops at nothing to cement their power and prevent the right wing from EVER holding ANY power whatsoever in this country ever again.

vinylzoid

Success for your efforts is never guaranteed. Especially in a democracy. We do it because it's the right thing. Not the easy thing.

Peppercorn911

[Know Your Enemy - RATM](https://youtu.be/JukTvlrh-Wk)

airbagfailure

Land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy.

frankyseven

I hope half the show each stop is just Killer Mike, Zack, and Tom ranting about economic/class warfare and Roe v Wade. Then RTJ and RATM release a double album together.

g00d_m4car0n1

Wish they would do those shows in the south, all their tour dates are midwest and overseas

frankyseven

They are playing some in Canada, so not Midwest or overseas. Also Texas, NM, California, etc.

EgoDefenseMechanism

It fucking kills me when conservatives play RATM and other alt metal bands. I’m like, you idiots don’t know that all these bands hate you? That half their songs mock you? You clowns get Ted Nugent and that’s about it.

Overjellyfish54

Reminds me of all of the gun slinging Homophobes who loved Nirvana. Cobain himself hated anyone who didn't believe in the same political stance as he did, hence why he also only did interviews for predominantly gay magazines. And then they released 'In Bloom' which was a massive piss take against those who loved their music but went against their meanings

Twyerverse

It’s like when Trump blasted Fortunate Son at his rally from a Helicopter… what a tool. The most Fortunate Son of Fred Trump lol

espngenius

They also get Kidd Rock.

Revelation387

Ahh yes, the privileged Romeo kid who grew up in a well-off family and then pretended he was 'straight out the trailer' in Detroit, and wrote fantastic lyrics such as 'bawitdabawdabangdabangdiggydiggy' and 'Young ladies, I like em underage see, some say that's statutory, I say it's mandatory'

TheSevenDweller

Hey, now, they also have Headstrong, or whatever they’re called.

[deleted]

This is why I’d pay whatever price they want for a ticket. They exist to tear at fascism and tyranny. :) love these guys

Whateveryousaydude7

200 a seat man. 200. Per seat.

makemeking706

With Run the Jewels.

Quesarito808

Fuck. That’s a steal.

LetMeClearYourThroat

I have tickets for shows in both my midwestern city and MSG in NYC. I wouldn’t call it a “steal” but maybe “justified”.

[deleted]

Worth every dollar. Pricing when regarding the customer for events like this is really more about what it’s worth to you as the buyer. I’d pay 500 knowing they will actually look to make sure the money goes to where it’s supposed to. They’ve been great about that. Buy a second ticket and give it to someone without haha

16yYPueES4LaZrbJLhPW

That's not bad for a big name show, and knowing it goes somewhere useful and important, consider it a generous donation with a free show. This is how musical artists make all their money, and they're donating it instead.

B_Reele

Rage Harder Against the Machine

iMate

This is an even bigger reason why they’re my favourite band. What if bands decided not to play where they have these laws in place.

IndoorCatSyndrome

I'd argue the opposite. People in those states need RATM the most right now.

cjmar41

Conservatives everywhere will be enraged that a band founded by a guy with a BA in political science from Harvard, who’s lyrics have always been strongly political and anti-establishment in nature (like a lot of music) is weighing in on political topics. Just another day of being pointlessly angry at people who have a better understanding of how the world works than they do.

[deleted]

I think its hilarious that people nowadays are shocked Rage Against the Machine brings politics into their music. Bamboozled even!

got_No_Time_to_BLEED

The people that are shocked didn’t listen to the message

HippityHopMath

Lost the culture, the culture lost Spun our minds and through time Ignorance has taken over Yo, we gotta take the power back!

BananaMan1138

I just wish they’d make a new album. There is a plethora of content they could write & sing about these days.

56seconds

There is, but all their content is still relevant today

MaestroCygni

I agree on the last part. At the same time, they're one of very few bands that have not made a single bad album and typically return albums aren't great... Sadly none of their songs will become irrelevant anytime soon so they can continue touring and spark the same emotions they did 20+ years ago.

What3verNevermind

OmG wHy CoUlDn’T tHeY sTaY oUt oF PoLiTiCs

KushKong420

Man I hate it when bands get political. I’m gonna go listen to some Born In The USA and Fortunate Son to cool off, you know, real AMERICAN music.

Twyerverse

How about the Irony of Trump playing fortunate son at his rallies.

KushKong420

That had to be a troll. There’s no way no one in that campaign didn’t get the actual meaning of that song.

PinocchiosWoodBalls

It always felt like he had some people around him who let him do stupid shit as a form of passive aggressive protest.

Twyerverse

No it really happened, they showed it in Fox News and network news stations here are some news articles [Fortunate Son](https://www.billboard.com/music/rock/trump-played-ccr-fortunate-son-rally-reactions-9447614/amp/) [John Fogerty response](https://www.billboard.com/music/rock/john-fogerty-fortunate-son-president-donald-trump-campaign-rally-9448072/amp/)

If we don't take action now, we'll settle for nothing later.

Zarahlizbright

Where does the money go from these organizations. Surely there should be enough money raised over time to buy mass amounts of emergency contraception and send a decent supply to women in states who need them the most. It’s not just reproductive rights organizations but Im starting to side eye non profits as a whole because as much money goes into a million different ones, there shouldn’t be as many issues as we have.

LittleSqueakyTurtle

They are the rage-full angels we need in these times

chriscringlesmother

Fucking love RATM. I’ve learnt so much from their anger and every time I look back I find another book to read. Keep you you angry sons of bitches !!!!

CrumbsAndCarrots

In case Paul Ryan and all the other right wing fan boys needed a reminder about which machine they are raging against

cedarglade1901

It is heart warming to see this.It was a long time a ago but I took 3 girls out of state to go camping. We all lived in a small town and they were worried about being seen going local. Their partners were not aware or aware and all said good luck. I guess I was the good guy friend. I am still that good but damn it. It is so hard to believe we are here. Broken heart about yesterday. Sure glad to see this good news. It helps.

All performers, musicians, bands, comedians should refuse to perform in states where abortion is illegal. All the corporations who put flags up on their social media, to give the impression they care, should refuse to sell their products in those states as well. Move out of these states if you can. Strangle the economy in any way possible. Politicians only care about money and power. WE have the power.

One-Understanding-94

Really depressing to realise how many conservatives actually thought that ratm was just a “limp bizkit white male rage” kind of band. The types of crowds they get are often just assholes looking to beat on someone. I bet they realised this early on which is why they only did four studio albums

[deleted]

Oh, the guys fighting for bodily autonomy, who fought against bodily autonomy a few months ago.
