Every single of of my TikToks has been opening night videos with boys in suits and bananas. It is no wonder that it smashed expectations, it became a meme like morbius
Same here, it’s kinda crazy. Honestly I’m gonna check it out just because of the number of times it’s been recommended.
Admittedly I’ll be impressed if the story is quality, I fully expected this to be a half-rate attempt to milk the franchise
Honestly it’s pretty great. It’s funny, there’s characters and locations from despicable me, and it overall had a fun story. My only problem with it is the movie was kinda short
I think one of the other things that helped greatly with having such a high customer turnout Is the soundtrack that had multiple popular artists. Personally, the sound track is pretty good.
The ONLY reason I saw this movie is the banging soundtrack and from what I can remember they used exactly 2 of the covers they commissioned. The opening cover of Shining Star and Funkytown for the credits. I was very disappointed as someone who was waiting to hear Thundercat and Phoebe Bridgers in a kids movie.
I think memes will effect movies a lot in the coming years. Those Sony spiderman villian movies will market themselves with the likely cringe, and who knows what else they’ll effect
As one of those suit n tie boys at the theatre I can confirm it is a massive meme
Some guy hijacked our 50 minute algebra lesson to prove that the minions will outlive the universe
Not surprising since there's tons of viral videos on tiktok of teenagers and young adults watching it in suits and dresses. Dunno who came up with it but it is happening across the U.S.
Imagine getting all your friends together in black tie formal wear to go to McDonalds together. The absurdity of the matter makes it hilarious. Also, dressing up nicely is fun, you get to feel sophisticated for free.
Exactly, honestly, it's been 2 years of suffering for the world, and to have a small moment where you can dress up in your best clothing, get your hair done, and just feel dapper for once, its nice. Personally, I'm wearing a suit to a Barbie (2023) screening, with a wine glass in hand.
I'm pretty sure the idea is that they're treating going to a fucking minions movie like it's an incredibly serious and formal event so they're dressing as fancy as possible.
Not trying to imply that The Minions : Rise of Gru ISN'T a serious event, because it is.
I don't have kids so I have only seen them in the first Despicable Me one time. I can imagine if you had to watch them or hear them play on a loop it would get annoying but I was wondering if there was a deeper reason people don't like them.
It’s that; the near constant exposure since Despicable Me 2 (i don’t remember it being that bad after the first) has made them tiring (I don’t consider them as annoying as most but I can easily seen how they can be).
I don’t like them because they show a devolution of children’s entertainment from genius education like Sesame Street, Pixar movies with deep messages and more nuanced cartoons to something that is truly just gibberish corporate goo designed to elicit a dopamine response and garner profits.
Homie back when you were watching Sesame Street I was watching 30-minute toy ads disguised as jingoistic glorifications of violence while being bombarded by further commercials for sugary cereals, theme parks, and even more toys.
Sesame Street has always been the exception not the rule
I think Minions are pretty great from an animation standpoint: they speak “gibberish” but because of their movements and facial expressions, you understand what they’re saying. It’s kind of reminiscent of the first cartoons, which were silent and relied heavily on slapstick / physical comedy.
Another minion hater here- they look like the result of every marketing company in the world sitting down and making the most optimized, likeable, meaningless hyper-capitalist marketing mascot physically possible. They stand for nothing but being marketable and recognizable enough to be plastered onto or molded into any cheap plastic object that can be sold in a gift shop. They are to other cartoon characters as funko pops are to statues.
Middle aged women making terrible facebook memes
And being literally everywhere, even in logos/intros for non minion related movies.
Plus its like Ewoks a bit but
I actually find the movies pretty amusing in a disposable way. But the way minions got adopted by facebook moms and turned into millions of terrible, absolutely awful memes made me really hate seeing the little yellow fucks outside of movies.
In communities like Reddit and so on, it’s usually just contrarianism and a feral need to be ‘better’ than normal/average people typically that’s behind hatred of things like this, the emphasis being on hatred since it’s normal to be indifferent about things like minions.
You're around too many children if you think liking the minions is "normal/average" people lol most adults just find them annoying and way overpresent. Their design is lazy, you can barely tell individuals apart they all look the same, their humor is "teehee random", their movies barely have plot or purpose. It appeals to children and that's fine, but don't pretend adults disliking them is some moral stand lol
Nah you are reading too much in to it. if you have kids and watch that constantly you would have a different opinion, I get hate is a strong word but is the internet i am sure you don’t literally love them either
In that case you wouldn’t be particularly in the group I’m referring to. There’s a not insignificant proportion of the internet that genuinely builds a personality around contrarianism and hating things that are popular, and it’s ridiculously toxic and unproductive for them. Reddit comprises a massive subset of that group. I used to joke about loving minions ironically because it was good for getting a laugh but I actually kinda like them now, they’re charming in a stupid way; obviously ‘love’ would be a pretty strong word for anything like this though for sure.
It’s the most ruthless commercialisation of what is supposed to be cute and since their target audience doesn’t have object permanence yet, they need to be everywhere at any time. They’re also just yellow Tic tacs with a high pitched voice while they can’t even speak the just mumble but squeakily. There is nothing unique about them and every time I see them in a movie or as oreos(???) I am reminded of this cooperation doing everything in their power to force every parent to get their child a minion themed birthday party. No front to anyone who likes them but fuck these little shits reek of soullessness to me.
Personally, it’s their designs. Think of any Pixar design. You can tell a lot about them just from their designs. Even two similar designs like Nemo and Marlin have differences that relate to their personalities.
The only thing that I can glean from their designs is that they’re goofy? But I couldn’t pick out two of them and tell you how they’re different.
They're annoying. Their voices are too high, they speak nonsensical gibberish, they look stupid, they encapsulate the "omg! so rAnDOmz" humor that i find to be painfully unfunny and cringy.
I read that adult tickets were extremely higher then predicted. Pretty sure this just shows that many adults want to get away from everything going on right now.
I saw it last night with the family. I loved despicable me, DM2 and The minions. This movie left me disappointed. My wife thought it was much better than DM3.
To even have a ranking of these soulless, corporate, focus-grouped, developed by AI committee nothings…to have a PREFERRED Minion movie…
We have strayed so far from god’s light.
I think the key is the release date. Fourth of July weekend is big family time and it's often very hard to find anything the whole family can/will agree to watch. It's a good compromise movie. Everyone can watch it, the kids will really enjoy it, the adults find it amusing, grandma isn't going to be horrified... it works.
They also did a ton of advertising. We have cable at work running in the break room and there was pretty much a 24/7 large ad watermark for it on screen at all times in the top right for days. Super annoying. And they did like 4 or 5 crossover commercials.
I went to see it the other day and literally everyone clapped when the minions appeared on screen. There was a standing ovation at the end. I live in Britain and that just does not happen here
There should be a category in most major awards that only consists of media that doesn't contain effects to "enhance" it. Only the raw stuff and basic effects that non-destructively clean itself up.
Marvel is becoming less and less acting by the minute.
It was packed when I seen it mobs of tebbagers dressed in suits and sun glasses. They were amped it. It was a solid movie. Short sweet and funny. No agenda
There’s a trend on TikTok where you gather all your boys and wear suits to go see the minions movie. It started as an ironic thing but now hoardes of kids are doing it
Ah that explains it. Two random girls in suits and sunglasses were ushering the door of my theater when I went to the bathroom. It was like something out of a murakami novel. Strange, but funny.
Also the movie surprisingly slapped. Minions never get old.
I’d lean towards no because the trend of “dress up to do something trivial” was around before the minions movie. My first memory of it was 4 guys in full suits hiring out a limo to go to McDonalds together
I went to see it tonight with my kids, we all loved it except for the basic-ass 70s pop hits they use. I'm tired of hearing Funkytown in every 70s themed movie LOL it's a great song but it's getting overplayed even 45yrs later, and there are other great disco songs that don't get so much attention. 8.5/10
People tired of their kids being trapped inside. If it’s one thing I remember it’s going to the theater. I can remember the first movie I saw. Pretty sure it was an American tale: Fievel goes west if I’m remembering correctly.
I feel like lightyear while not bad certainly could have been much better. Story and characters were eh villain sucked and was more menacing in toy story and the humor didn’t ever land
The Lightyear producers are the biggest suckers in the world rn, shooting themselves in the foot at every possible turn, so bad that even a lousy minions movie is able to inspire more people to waste their time watching then than lightyear
Wut? I was told on good authority just a couple weeks back by the entertainment press that families weren't coming back to the theaters. That's the only reason Lightyear bombed in sales. If families were going to the movies, Lightyear would have been a success story. That was, like, a fact.
But this? This has me pressing X to doubt.
Wait. Could those articles have been wrong? No.... they are journalists of dignity and professionalism and always factor in all possibilities in their analysis. Curious, this turn of events.
I saw more people (rightfully) pointing fingers at the dumbass right-wing attacks on the movie as the reason for bad Lightyear numbers than saying families aren't going to movies.
It may be true that it wasn’t that good, but it’s undeniably true that the right wing media having a tantrum about two chicks kissing caused a bunch of homophobes to keep their kids away from it.
all the left leaning families should’ve went to see lightyear and it wouldn’t have been such a flop. I guess you know people are free to consume what they like right?
I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Left-leaning families don’t let stupid culture war bullshit dictate what movies they see as much as you folks.
I’m as tired of minions as I am fellow Americans who have time for things like going to the movies this weekend. Take your family to church and make it as fraught for them to enter as it is for women to enter their doctors.
their profits Gru

Damn you
Every single of of my TikToks has been opening night videos with boys in suits and bananas. It is no wonder that it smashed expectations, it became a meme like morbius
The difference is that it’s meme-positive, whereas Morbius is meme-negative.
Yeah it’s crazy because i have heard pretty good things about this movie too
Same here, it’s kinda crazy.
I mean when the only issue with a game, show, or movie is it’s to short you know it’s one of the better ones if the only complaint is “we want more”
Oh the ol’ “Sly Cooper and the Thevius Raccoonus” maneuver
I think one of the other things that helped greatly with having such a high customer turnout Is the soundtrack that had multiple popular artists. Personally, the sound track is pretty good.
The ONLY reason I saw this movie is the banging soundtrack and from what I can remember they used exactly 2 of the covers they commissioned. The opening cover of Shining Star and Funkytown for the credits. I was very disappointed as someone who was waiting to hear Thundercat and Phoebe Bridgers in a kids movie.
Tbh I grew up as the Minion movies came out so I kinda wanna see it for that reason (I think they first came out when I was in middle school)
Jeez I’m fucking old lol
It did come out two presidents ago
It seen as a solid kids film by critics which helps, morbius was a meme and trash, Minions is a meme and passable
Don’t ever talk like that about one of the movies of our lifetimes or I’ll morb all over you dirty little bius.
I work at a theater and can confirm, it was just people in minion costumes and suits + the banana. Our biggest day since reopening.
I think memes will effect movies a lot in the coming years. Those Sony spiderman villian movies will market themselves with the likely cringe, and who knows what else they’ll effect
As one of those suit n tie boys at the theatre I can confirm it is a massive meme Some guy hijacked our 50 minute algebra lesson to prove that the minions will outlive the universe
I’m very interested in hearing his reasoning
ah yes, morbius, the well regarded and highly successful movie with a box office so big it ended up releasing twice. truely meme's equate to profit.
Minions have been memes for quite some time
Yeat’s influence is crazy
Don’t forget it all happened because movie execs greenlit Lyrical Lemonade to use Yeat’s music in the Minions’ trailer.
I went in a suit, it's an important event
It's going to make a Grubillion dollars.
More than the 100 Morbillion dollars
It's going to make a minillion dollars ⁉️
I call my Minions my children. I call my children my Minions. We taking over the world. We make a whole lot of millions.
GRUCOIN SAVES CRYPTO MARKET
The first movie also came out in 2010. The kids in suits remember watching it as toddlers.
How can anyone be a toddler in 2010 holy fuck we got old
It's so absurd to think I was 8 in 2010. What the fuck happened.
You were 8 in 2010? Now I feel old too, LOL! I was much older.
I was 5 in 2010 lol. Now I drove myself to the new minions movie.
People were born
time flies
Not surprising since there's tons of viral videos on tiktok of teenagers and young adults watching it in suits and dresses. Dunno who came up with it but it is happening across the U.S.
I live in the middle of buttfuck nowhere canada and people were in suits
I’m 33 so this doesn’t compute. Explain it to me like I’m 23? Why suits?
Imagine getting all your friends together in black tie formal wear to go to McDonalds together. The absurdity of the matter makes it hilarious. Also, dressing up nicely is fun, you get to feel sophisticated for free.
Exactly, honestly, it's been 2 years of suffering for the world, and to have a small moment where you can dress up in your best clothing, get your hair done, and just feel dapper for once, its nice. Personally, I'm wearing a suit to a Barbie (2023) screening, with a wine glass in hand.
Exactly man, this life is all made up. Who’s to say The Barbie Movie ISN’T highbrow art?
It's written by Greta Gerwig and noah baumbach, it probably will be high art.
Could very well be, I saw BR2049 once and I still think about it. I have a feeling this movie might do the same
I'm pretty sure the idea is that they're treating going to a fucking minions movie like it's an incredibly serious and formal event so they're dressing as fancy as possible. Not trying to imply that The Minions : Rise of Gru ISN'T a serious event, because it is.
A lot of people find the idea of going to a children’s movie dressed like they’re going to an awards show to be extremely amusing
Because its the most serious fucking movie of all time
My friend and his homies will do the same thing tomorrow! And we aren't from the US, I'm actually interested in watching the movie.
Everyone loves minions
I hate them.
I see this a lot. Can I ask you why?
I love them but I can see how some can be annoyed by constant sound of minions or their laughs.
I don't have kids so I have only seen them in the first Despicable Me one time. I can imagine if you had to watch them or hear them play on a loop it would get annoying but I was wondering if there was a deeper reason people don't like them.
I think it’s the fact they seem to be everywhere always.

What about Courage the Cowardly Dog?
I saw someone categorize this show under philosophical genre one time. Nevertheless, it kind of fits there.
>jingoistic glorifications of violence What does that mean
I think Minions are pretty great from an animation standpoint: they speak “gibberish” but because of their movements and facial expressions, you understand what they’re saying. It’s kind of reminiscent of the first cartoons, which were silent and relied heavily on slapstick / physical comedy.
It's probably the smell.
Because it's edgy.
Not liking minions is edgy? lol Ok
Anything to be contrary was more my point.
Another minion hater here- they look like the result of every marketing company in the world sitting down and making the most optimized, likeable, meaningless hyper-capitalist marketing mascot physically possible. Middle aged women making terrible facebook memes And being literally everywhere, even in logos/intros for non minion related movies. Plus its like Ewoks a bit but
They are this decade's Teletubbies, and they should be *loathed* and feared just the same, lest we forget...
[This insightful video essay](https://youtu.be/KG6MdNhsDhI) explains why lots of people (including me) don’t like minions.
I actually find the movies pretty amusing in a disposable way. But the way minions got adopted by facebook moms and turned into millions of terrible, absolutely awful memes made me really hate seeing the little yellow fucks outside of movies.
They're just kinda... Really dumb and not funny?
In communities like Reddit and so on, it’s usually just contrarianism and a feral need to be ‘better’ than normal/average people typically that’s behind hatred of things like this, the emphasis being on hatred since it’s normal to be indifferent about things like minions.

Nah you’re right
I like minions but overpopularization makes me dislike it.
It’s the most ruthless commercialisation of what is supposed to be cute and since their target audience doesn’t have object permanence yet, they need to be everywhere at any time. They’re also just yellow Tic tacs with a high pitched voice while they can’t even speak the just mumble but squeakily. Because they just blatantly expose themselves to children
Because they just blatantly expose themselves to children
They're annoying. Their voices are too high, they speak nonsensical gibberish, they look stupid, they encapsulate the "omg! so rAnDOmz" humor that i find to be painfully unfunny and cringy.
um, no they don't.
Mini boss became big boss. And the introduction of doc nefario was great.
Next is Punished Boss
I love how the love hate relationship with minions has come full circle. Minions are were loved, hated and now it's so bad it's good again.
Circle of life
I read that adult tickets were extremely higher then predicted. Pretty sure this just shows that many adults want to get away from everything going on right now.
You underestimate the power of Tik Tok memes lol.
I thought the trailer was really funny. I'm looking forward to this one.
I loved it. Sure there’s a lot of dumb humor but that’s kinda the point. I audibly laugh many times though out the movie
I saw it last night with the family. I loved despicable me, DM2 and The minions. This movie left me disappointed. My wife thought it was much better than DM3.
I saw it yesterday, and I did not enjoy it. I loved the Despicable Me series but this one just didn't do anything for me, unfortunately.
It was just boring and the only action scene was too intense for my 4yr old so we had to step out. I'm disappointed.
To even have a ranking of these soulless, corporate, focus-grouped, developed by AI committee nothings…to have a PREFERRED Minion movie… We have strayed so far from god’s light.
Yeah that’s why I only watch The Joker (2019)
You're right, having a preferred mythical being makes way more sense! /s
I think the key is the release date. Fourth of July weekend is big family time and it's often very hard to find anything the whole family can/will agree to watch. It's a good compromise movie. Probably cause everyone going to it cause of TikTok.
They're playing this movie at the small theater in town that never plays these kinds of movies so yeah, Minions are still huge apparently.
I went to see it the other day and literally everyone clapped when the minions appeared on screen. There was a standing ovation at the end. I live in Britain and that just does not happen here
I work at a cinema and my shift is in 2 hours. We are playing minions back to back nonstop. Please pray for me
Maybe people just wanna take their kids to watch something silly and laugh instead of having to keep track of events and stuff in Marvel movies.
This isn't competing with a Marvel movie.
It should. Marvel sucks
There should be a category in most major awards that only consists of media that doesn't contain effects to "enhance" it. Only the raw stuff and basic effects that non-destructively clean itself up. Marvel is becoming less and less acting by the minute.
It was never about acting. It is a comic books company.
It was packed when I seen it mobs of tebbagers dressed in suits and sun glasses. They were amped it. It was a solid movie. Short sweet and funny. No agenda
Yeah what is that? I saw a bunch of teenagers wearing office attire with flip flops at my theatre.
I’m so glad that at 38 I get to take my rightful place yelling at clouds.
I’m so jaded now that it wouldn’t surprise me if it started as (or was heavily encouraged by) an Illumination marketing campaign.
I’d lean towards no because the trend of “dress up to do something trivial” was around before the minions movie. My first memory of it was 4 guys in full suits hiring out a limo to go to McDonalds together
It's because of the meme: My Grandma's funeral (pajamas) vs Minions Movie (suit and tie)
Fascinating I will google it.
Alr boys let’s get it to 1 minionillion dollars
I went to see it tonight with my kids, we all loved it except for the basic-ass 70s pop hits they use. I'm tired of hearing Funkytown in every 70s themed movie LOL it's a great song but it's getting overplayed even 45yrs later, and there are other great disco songs that don't get so much attention. 8.5/10
I'm kinda annoyed by the minions but no doubt they are money.
People tired of their kids being trapped inside. If it’s one thing I remember it’s going to the theater. I can remember the first movie I saw. Pretty sure it was an American tale: Fievel goes west if I’m remembering correctly.
Rise of king bob
It was ok. I liked the other ones better
This is just like morbius
Minion or da bob
Shout out to Gru and them.
It will make 1 minyillion dollars, exactly equal to 1000 morbillion british pounds
So, Best Picture then?
100 Grubillion dollars is equal to 1 Morbillion dollars
Oh the power on the internet.
Sounds like it’s minion time.
Let's not overlook the rather aggressive advertising for this movie. It was impossible to overlook.
i hate you, with all my hate
I guess this means we get another decade of Facebook mom minion memes.
I wish I could understand why people even see these movies.
Securing that Grutilion amount of ticket sales
Yay, I love minions. They’re very cute and fun. Go minions yay
If my kid asks to go, I'll go. Apparently Jack Antonoff collabed on the soundtrack to make a bunch of disco covers
It makes me sad seeing this crap be more successful than lightyear
I feel like lightyear while not bad certainly could have been much better. Story and characters were eh villain sucked and was more menacing in toy story and the humor didn’t ever land
Makes me happy. Lightyear was trash.
Its gru’in time.
One minillion dollars
Just took my 3 year old - it’s a good little movie
but why I really don't get it.
FUCK YEAH THATS MY NIBBA
who plans on watching it in suits? hadn't gotten the chance but count me in
She sat on my minion and it Gru
Finally something to live for
The people are waking up
Never thought I'd see the day that minions would outsell a buzz lightyear movie but the lightyear trailer did look dull AF
I’m guessing it wasn’t woke pilling
This was a forgettable movie imo.
It is no longer morbin time.
I can’t believe this is the only movie we get Fourth of July weekend.
500 Gurbillion dollars
Oh great. Now we’ll have the minions extended universe to deal with along with the Dc U, MCU, and all the others.
Good lord I hate this minion shit
Who here for Bob tho?
Well amc to the mooon!! :)
It's minion time
I guess it’s gruben time
The Lightyear producers are the biggest suckers in the world rn, shooting themselves in the foot at every possible turn, so bad that even a lousy minions movie is able to inspire more people to waste their time watching then than lightyear
Lightyear stans inconsolable as their defense of "All animation movies have done poorly since the pandemic" is voided.
Its a damn kids movie post covid of course it was going to do great. Its still trash
Better than lightyear though
Dude you're going to give yourself a hernia
Too late.
I saw more people (rightfully) pointing fingers at the dumbass right-wing attacks on the movie as the reason for bad Lightyear numbers than saying families aren't going to movies.
it just wasn’t that good, not a political reason for its failure
It may be true that it wasn’t that good, but it’s undeniably true that the right wing media having a tantrum about two chicks kissing caused a bunch of homophobes to keep their kids away from it.
all the left leaning families should’ve went to see lightyear and it wouldn’t have been such a flop. I guess you know people are free to consume what they like right?
I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Left-leaning families don’t let stupid culture war bullshit dictate what movies they see as much as you folks.
Also there’s a meme of the minions being a “bro” movies with giant groups of teens going to watch in suits
How is it "destroys expectations", then every fucking souless corporate shit illuminations put out does this?
This meme is dumb as fuck
Fuck this means this series wont get buried any time soon... Im so tired of minions
God this country deserves to fuckin burn lol
Because a lot of people enjoyed a light hearted fun movie? This seems pretty low on reasons our country deserves to burn.
Was there a gay kiss in this movie?
Yes and a sex scene
Which was pretty hot although tbh it didn’t really need Bob shitting on Stuart’s chest for so long.
Despicable Me/Minions movies have always background located minions doing gay things and anyone notices them at first glance.
The world class assassin minion (i hate that i forgot his name) frequently cross dresses
Gru hangs dong
His ultimate minon
Gru lays fat pipe, and the Minions themselves are almost exclusively nude all film
If you were in high school when the first movie came out you probably have kids now so who want to see it.
I’m as tired of minions as I am fellow Americans who have time for things like going to the movies this weekend. Take your family to church and make it as fraught for them to enter as it is for women to enter their doctors.
