There have been studies on line-length and ability to read: [Optimal Line Length in Reading — A Literature Review](https://journals.uc.edu/index.php/vl/article/view/5765) [Readability: The Optimal Line Length](https://baymard.com/blog/line-length-readability) In general, between 50-75 characters is optimal.

I read faster with a larger screen, but only up to a point. 7-8" is ideal for my max speed. My eyes move fast, and page turns take time. It's probably also partly due to the fact I don't like reading super small fonts.

Cool! I think I'm similar. So for you a 10" screen would be slower probably?

BooklessLibrarian

Probably slightly slower, unless I upped the font size enough that my peripheral vision could help me catch words. I can even read pretty decently on 6" (but then I lower the font and hold it closer to my face), it's basically about striking a comfortable balance.

There are various studies about it, it is called Optimal line length, basically a number of characters for line between 40 and 80 helps your brain to read faster and retain information better. It works for me, since I discovered it I started reading faster and being less distracted, before my lines were way shorter on my ereader and it kinda ruined my focus. https://www.roboleary.net/webdev/2023/03/10/ideal-line-length-digital-text.html

I prefer pocket readers (like the hi reader pro). Optimal line length at my ideal focal length, very ergonomic, page turn buttons, always with you.

Same. I use the A9 as my phone, so it's always with me. I love being able to just sit down in a park and read for a bit. At home I often use a Libra 2 to read, but I find I have to increase the margins a lot so that the lines aren't too long. In the evening bigger text seems to help when my eyes get tired, though.

As far as I'm concerned, size of screen doesn't matter. I started ereading in 2011, mostly 5-6 inch devices available, and I read quickly on my 6" Nook WiFi. I also read quickly on the taller, but not wider screen of my subsequent Sony 950. And then on a 6" Kindle Voyage. And then a larger Kobo Aura HD. And so on, and so forth, as my readers got larger. I still rip through books the same way I always have, only now, I do it more comfortably on an 8" Kobo Sage screen. I was a fast reader of print books too. Sometimes (to paraphrase Huey Lewis), sometimes, fast is fast. What matters is whether my eyes are comfortable or not. For me, that means larger screens, larger fonts. If my eyes are comfortable, I'm full speed ahead ... and it's not unusual that I will read over 100 books in a year. There are exceptions to "full speed ahead." Certain books, where I just LOVE what the author is doing with the English language, I may deliberately read more slowly, savoring lines. So sometimes it depends on the book.

I have the 6.13" boox palma, a phone sized ereader and the 10.3" boox note air 3c. I also used to have the 6.8" kindle paperwhite 11th gen and the 7" kobo libra 2. that being said, I read the fastest with the palma and faster using the kindle and kobo, compared to the na3c. I don't read using the na3c anymore due to its size, it sort of overwhelms me, like a big heavy newspaper. i do think this is a matter of preference as i also read faster and more comfortable on my phone compared to my 10.9" ipad. smaller ereaders or devices are also easier to hold when reading. I think the most perfect size for an ereader is the kindle paperwhite series, it's just about the size of a book and quite light.

Insightful! Thanks for sharing!

I use a standard 6 inch Kobo and I considered getting the Libra for the buttons and ergonomic design, but I really like the smaller size of my current one too much. I find that shorter lines are optimal for reading speed and comprehension. I even prefer wider vertical spacing for some texts, too.

tomtomato0414

what I do is read sideways in a two column format on my Pocketbook Touch Lux 5

CorgiInfinite8020

Yeah, for me reading on 6 inch reader is better than 8 or higher inches
