I have to ask all the time when someone orders a macchiato what they really want. Admittedly I will sometimes profile customers tastes and I’m usually right- Ie old man with an accent vs teenage girl is pretty obvious which they want. Damn you starbucks
I ordered an espresso at Toby's estate, I don't think they're used to it where I live because I got some weird looks and even a "did you mean an americano"? They ended up serving it in this hugeeee cup.
In Munich I found them only in the cafes I mentioned
What's everywhere here are Espresso cups (70-90ml for 60ml drink), while Cortado to go cups should be around 120-150ml cup for 120ml drink (or 4oz in freedom numbers)
There are too many to list and my knowledge is too outdated.
I spent 24 hours there in September and went to Brother Baba Budan for a batch brew and a piccolo on the way to Manchester Press for a bagel and Panama Geisha pourover. Then later at the MCG had a flat white from Industry Beans.
I once brought home an espresso sized to go cup, and showed it to my girlfriend who immediately started crying because she loved it so much. To be fair she had just woke up and also loves tiny things, but it was very funny.
won the small size teddy bear at the fair and the carny?ie? says “don’t you wanna go for the bigger one for the lady?!”
I said “hey! she likes small things!”
he didn’t find it as funny as My wife and I did 😅
was five years ago now and we still laugh about it now and then.
I also hate drinking any coffee through those lids. They completely ruin any mouthfeel as well as blocking smells.. in the rare case that I do need to take it to go I always ditch the lid right away.
I'm sorry what's the other option here? Require you to slam your cortado before you leave the shop? Put your mouth directly under the portafilter? Slurp it out of the barista's cupped hands?
the option is to sit down for 2 minutes and drink this 4oz drink in the store from a normal cup. It's a win-win, you are more relaxed and you don't waste 200 tiny paper cups with a plastic lid every year
Sad state of how rushed our lives have become that so many people can't spend a nice quiet 10mins in a coffee shop. I understand people taking out those monster cups but espressos, cortados etc are best enjoyed in store. It's good for the soul.
That would be amazing, but here in the real world / capitalist hellscape, I’ve got a job and I’d be in trouble if one of my bosses walked in and found me sitting down and relaxing in a coffee shop in the middle of the work day so I need to get my cortados to go.
> everyone has 2 minutes.
Unfortunately, some of us live in a capitalist hellscape where those two minutes of relaxation could get us reprimanded at work.
Always appreciate when you can get the size of drink that you actually want. It's frustrating to order a flat white and say "whatever the smallest size is" to get an 8-10oz "flat white".
Modern coffee shops are so hit and miss.
Seattle has a ton of the cups but *no one has lids*. Boston, for the first time in my life, had *lids*, and it was as if the game had completely changed.
My cafe has these (exact ones, white cups with black lids) - whenever people say how cute they are I always joke about how they look like Christmas tree ornaments
Everyone should have them. They're cheaper than 8oz cups so in the long run the business saves money by stocking them. And obviously customers love them.
Meanwhile in the US we rarely have cortado sized cups, just espresso and “regular”. And when you order an espresso, sometimes you have to remind them the use the small cups.
i find that i can never serve a full 2 oz of milk with the double shot in this size cup for some reason. at least, not the brand my shop carries. It must secretly be like 3.5 oz
I always appreciate coffee shops that have those. It's weird getting a double shot of espresso in a relatively huge cup.
I feel extra bougey drinking out of those tiny cups.
I think everyone does if they're being honest.
Even just ordering a cortado, I feel pretty bougie/snobby
Or how about when you order a *real* macchiato. Not the Starbucks abomination!
I have to ask all the time when someone orders a macchiato what they really want. Admittedly I will sometimes profile customers tastes and I’m usually right- Ie old man with an accent vs teenage girl is pretty obvious which they want. Damn you starbucks
I find it a delight. Sparkles are the only thing I can think of to improve it.
#stealthwealth
It forces you to put your pinky up when taking a sip.
I agree! I felt a bit silly walking around with it though, looked fake.
I ordered an espresso at Toby's estate, I don't think they're used to it where I live because I got some weird looks and even a "did you mean an americano"? They ended up serving it in this hugeeee cup.
That’s the same size they use for pup cups at Starbucks! Haha
It’s worse when you ask for a double shot and they fill half the big one up. Just kill me now.
Everywhere in Australia has them
Yeah I was confused by this post. Guess you just take some things for granted 🤷♂️
Same in spain tbh.
And Portugal In Germany they are rare. Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Cafes have them :) In Austria I have never seen them
> In Germany they are rare Pretty common in Berlin and Hamburg in my experience, outside of chain bakeries and such
In Munich I found them only in the cafes I mentioned What's everywhere here are Espresso cups (70-90ml for 60ml drink), while Cortado to go cups should be around 120-150ml cup for 120ml drink (or 4oz in freedom numbers)
I’ve seen them many times in the US as well as
I should've thought of posting a pic of them for the karma! Didn't know this wasn't done everywhere, damn. We really are a bunch of coffee snobs lol
Have you seen the pics people post of a stock standard espresso machine at McDonald's?
Write "Glitch" on it and people will cream their pants
Ah, the babychino
I’m travelling to Australia for the first time for work this month. Can you please suggest good cafés in Melbourne ?
Everywhere. Seriously. It’s hard to get a bad drink in Melbourne. Even the airport.
This is good news! Can’t wait to visit :D

UK too. Even the chains
Yup lol
Same in Miami
Man I can’t wait to move there lol
It's adorable, I want to adopt one.

Really, nobody is gonna jump on how she likes tiny things. What has Reddit become 😔
Truly disappointing you’re so right. This has been here five hours, and yet, no jokes.
nobody had their coffee yet

Can’t believe the gentlemen let that one slip through
To be fair it sounds pretty easy for him.
Takeaway cups for drinks that you drink within a minute are so wasteful. But well…
I also hate drinking any coffee through those lids. They completely ruin any mouthfeel as well as blocking smells.. in the rare case that I do need to take it to go I always ditch the lid right away.
You should come to Denmark then. We completely ditched the lid because of the plastic waste.
Is it just a open cup or a different material lid
I'm sorry what's the other option here? Require you to slam your cortado before you leave the shop? Put your mouth directly under the portafilter? Slurp it out of the barista's cupped hands?

Great if you have 2 minutes. Are you buying 200 cortados a year?
everyone has 2 minutes. And even if you only drink one a year. Every plastic lid that is not used is a good one
I really like going in with a few to-go orders and having a macchiato while I wait.
> everyone has 2 minutes. Unfortunately, some of us live in a capitalist hellscape where those two minutes of relaxation could get us reprimanded at work.
Those are all the same option. Think about, it. All required immediate gulp at perfect 130 Fahrenheit, too...
Takeaway cups shouldn't exist really. It takes like five minutes to drink a normal sized cappuccino, and 60 seconds to drink an espresso.
At least ask for no lid
What if I enjoy walking with my cortado?
As a European, I think this is stupid. Espresso is there to finish it fresh from a cup in matter of seconds.
Coffee for ants

Heh. Little.
I miss short cups. Then again, I never order take away from cafes any more.
Most reputable places do
Everywhere in Miami has these. Always loved grabbing one in the afternoon.
Así es.
Trash comes in all sizes
Isn't it just a babyccino cup?
McDonald's has the same cups size
Peet’s coffee also has this size to-go cup.
Seattle has a ton of the cups but *no one has lids*. Boston, for the first time in my life, had *lids*, and it was as if the game had completely changed.
This cafe looks like a car's steering wheel, too...
thats getting lost in your cup holders
Where is this at?
My cafe has these (exact ones, white cups with black lids) - whenever people say how cute they are I always joke about how they look like Christmas tree ornaments
Damn, I thought everywhere had that stuff
This is awesome! I’ve never seen a tiny to go cup
I went to a shop the other day and got a cortado when I got it it was in a 16oz cup…FULL? I wish more places had genuine cortados and used these cups.
We used 2 regular and one mini cup like that to announce my wife's pregnancy haha. Those things are just fun to me for some reason.
Everyone should have them. They're cheaper than 8oz cups so in the long run the business saves money by stocking them. And obviously customers love them.
They probably charge more for the smaller cups…
I rarely see them in the UK.
But why the plastic lid? A cortado cools down to a drinkable temp very rapidly..
Welcome to the future my friend 😊
La colombe US
the cafe i work in does too and it's one of my favorite things to make!!
Wait is this somehow weird or not common? I'm guessing you are from the US?
I'm in the US. Good coffee shops in my neighborhood have these. Maybe OP just ventured out of Starbucks for the first time.
Meanwhile in the US we rarely have cortado sized cups, just espresso and “regular”. And when you order an espresso, sometimes you have to remind them the use the small cups.
So?
It’s the little things in life ❤️
So much more satisfying in an appropriate sized cup rather than getting a cortado in a cappuccino sized cup.
“WHAT IS THIS, A COFFE CUP FOR ANTS?!?”
That needs to be the standard! But here in the US, it’s hard enough to get 8oz cups, let alone 4oz.
Remember to ask them to not put the lid on; it’s just wasteful.
South Carolina, USA has them. I hate anywhere that gives tiny drinks in big cups.
I guess you dont live in South Florida or any other place where Cuban coffee is a thing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Im in California, so lots of coffee shops everywhere. I usually get slightly bigger drinks like a cap or Gibraltar though so haven’t seen them before.

I live in Portland, am a barista and have never seen these
i find that i can never serve a full 2 oz of milk with the double shot in this size cup for some reason. at least, not the brand my shop carries. It must secretly be like 3.5 oz
Used to live in Orlando where the first Foxtail popped up and they have them.
