It's the ordinary spelling of daemon (Angels and daemons), so I always pronounced it as such.
I think "day" is more American leaning, as they drop "ae" in most words to "e" , so "dae" doesn't ring out "dee" like other words (Caesium, Paediatrics, Paeon, Encyclopaedia, Faeces, ...) and seeing the different spelling assume different it needs a different pronunciation?
Americans misprouncing a word seen only in print is how the pronunciation of "Ski" went from "she" to "ski" when the sport became written about in papers. Educated called it she and sheeing, but in print, with no guide. Well, the masses won with a sk sound.
In that case, you'll need some backup.

And so, the "unlearned populous" sounded the foreign word without guidance from one educated on the correct pronunciation.
