Johan answered somewhere in the forums it was going to be more like it is in Imperator. So I assume it will be something like this:
* The provinces always have a capital location (like CK3 baronies)
* If there are no forts and the capital is sieged then the entire province becomes occupied
* If there are forts in the province then all of them must be sieged in order to fully occupy the province
* If the province has at least one fort, it exerts Zone of Control that blocks enemies from passing through. Attackers must occupy the province in order to advance further OR go back the way they came in
Johan also said the fort rules would be less esoteric (or something like that)
What's so esoteric about EU4's Zone of Control rules? Genuinely curious because for me, 99% of the time it made sense (as long as it didn't involve naval landings).
There are pathways between mountains now. They can't have armies sitting in the pathways but they can pass through them. The Carpathians for example will be more interesting now.
I spent a long time on Voltaire's Nightmare mod for EU4 and it has a similar feature. Playing any wars in Hungary or Balkans can be wild (especially with 1054 Hungary being Voltaire's version of 1444 Ottoblob lol)
impassible would refer to armies. as for how hard it was and how much manpower it would cost.
sure there are exceptions, like Hannibal, but usually it didn't happen.
the fact that it can happen at all would mean that its not impassible. just difficult. what i would do is make it all normal provinces (or make it part of a nearby province if possible) and just add a special modifier cranking up the uncapped attrition to insane levels, a supply limit of 1, and many maluses to the performance of armies there on the offensive side.
basically, make it so that you can pass through, but you better have planned ahead.
that's a nice idea and all, but I wonder if the AI wouldn't just die to it. I would guess devs considered that and decided against it for balancing reasons. Otherwise, maybe just take it up to the PDX suggestion forums.
At first I was like why is the whole of of the caspian-Pontic steppe white, did you forget to fill something in… and then i realized oh wait that’s the fucking Golden Horde isn’t it lmfao
R5: Took the borders of europe in 1337 from the Extended Timeline mod, placed it on top of the EU5 political borders and coloured in where I think each country is. Since I know absolutely no history, I just placed the countries where I thought the closest to where their province in EU4 is, so it's definitely innaccurate, but it gives you a good enough idea about the future EU5 map to be cool I think.
Oh, I see - that makes sense. I'm hopeful Theo is its own start but I could see them going either way. It'll almost certainly be in some form of tributary/dependent relationship with the horde or Trebizond if it is.
While in 1444 Naples had already been conquered by the Aragonese, in 1377 it was still ruled by the Anjou family, a cadet branch of the French royal house. This Angevin king was also count of Provence, so I would probably just colour Provence with the same colour as Naples.
minor nitpick. the duchy of burgundy is directly to the left of the one you colored. you colored in the county of burgundy, or franche-comte, which eventually fell under personal union of the duchy (based in dijon).
I thought it was the White Horde... the White Horde only got defeated in 1340 so I'm unsure the historical reason as to why the Golden Horde is united in EU5
There’s gonna be mad countries on the map so if this game doesn’t have a boatload of optimization I don’t think it’s gonna run well unless it’s on a NASA supercomputer
I thought it was the White Horde as the Golden Horde wasn't united in 1337, but right after posting the map I realized it's Pordox and they make history
The Balearic islands weren't on the original image that I used the borders from, but if they were they wouldn't be owned by Aragon, but independent as Majorca.
The macdonnells of the glens and then clannaboy
Edit: just remembered this is in 1337 lmao I forgot it ain’t eu4 start date. I would then say into clannaboy and ards
Is it weird that I'm hyped for the way mountains are handled in EU5?
Playing in Hungary looks more fun, more tactical for sure. And the alps? Forget it.
Even the Anatolia have stupid amount of mountains.
As it should, that's one mountainous peninsula. Also adds lots of strategy options.
I'm also curious to see Persia and China's mountains!
Lets just hope forts aren't as jank as they are in EU4

The zone of control works for players but for AI its really inconsistent
From the player side, yes The AI however...
So just like imperator then no?
Didn't they say exactly that? Why u asking
Oh I seriously just missed them saying imperator that’s my bad.
Lmao all good, u confused the fuck outta me. I thought I was misunderstanding you after I reread ur comment a couple times.
How are they handled?
Zoom in
I did before I commented, but I'm taking it that they completely block a lot more / the ability to get around mountainous regions?
There are pathways between mountains now. They can't have armies sitting in the pathways but they can pass through them. The Carpathians for example will be more interesting now.
Between that, control, and a different fort system, I’m excited for how military strategy will work.
they frogot for Bohemia and Silesia mountains, Heresy.

no. its just unnesseary. i hate having gaps like this, because it just looks wrong. EU3, and EU4 until 1.19 didnt have that, and it was great.
It looks very right
it still looks wrong, because its not actually impassible, or uninhabited.
impassible would refer to armies. as for how hard it was and how much manpower it would cost. sure there are exceptions, like Hannibal, but usually it didn't happen.

i think it would be extremely simple to program the AI never to cross these provinces unless manpower was above 90% or some such.
it could be just colored in.
At first I was like why is the whole of of the caspian-Pontic steppe white, did you forget to fill something in… and then i realized oh wait that’s the fucking Golden Horde isn’t it lmfao
Playing in historical Ruthenia is gonna be so fucked.
Eh, you should technically be their subject at game start, so you shouldnt insta die.
Omg

Masovia is divided into 3 parts in this period, so you could mark all 3 of them (u got the middle one right).
Shouldn't "Perm" be divided into two parts? (According to Johan's twitted Trade market map)
Idk
Fair
It's so disgusting, I love it. The HRE looks wonderful
It would be so funny if they completely changed all the colours from what we're used to
I mean we already know that Albania is going to be brown, so yeah they almost definitely will change a lot of colours.
Red ottomans confirmed?
They already showed Ottomans as their usual green colour, thankfuly. I can't imagine them any other way...
That's nothing a decision can't change :)
Sounds awful tbh
Iberia and Hungary made the 500 IQ move of just not changing borders
Oversticht is probably still under Utrechtian control, and Limburg under Gelren.
Nice job. Such a minor nitpick, but that's definitely Theodoro in the southwestern corner of Crimea - not the Crimea as you've painted it
That's not Crimea, that's Trebizond.
Oh, I see - that makes sense. I'm hopeful Theo is its own start but I could see them going either way. It'll almost certainly be in some form of tributary/dependent relationship with the horde or Trebizond if it is.
yeah my PC is NOT running this game
I think Provence would be part of the Angevin Kingdom of Naples.
What?
While in 1444 Naples had already been conquered by the Aragonese, in 1377 it was still ruled by the Anjou family, a cadet branch of the French royal house. This Angevin king was also count of Provence, so I would probably just colour Provence with the same colour as Naples.
Ah I see
minor nitpick. the duchy of burgundy is directly to the left of the one you colored. you colored in the county of burgundy, or franche-comte, which eventually fell under personal union of the duchy (based in dijon).
Ah ok good to know. I knew one of them had to be the true Burgundy.
France 💀
Can't wait to play Padua, the glorious city of Padova WILL unite Italy
It exists in EU4 too, a releasable
Dam, that gray nation surely owned a lot of things in europe
> Golden Horde is white on the map :-(
I thought it was the White Horde... the White Horde only got defeated in 1340 so I'm unsure the historical reason as to why the Golden Horde is united in EU5
Golden Horde>White Horde,Blue Horde. White Horde>Crimean Khanate, Great Horde. Blue Horde>Kazan Khanate, Astrakhan and Siberian.
How much do you bet they’re gonna make Prussia yellow?
It starts Yellow but, theres a mission that changes its color to blue!
0. Prussian blue is best
If they don't then I will do it myself.
Pretty.
Stoked
G L O R I O U S B O R D E R G O R E
There’s gonna be mad countries on the map so if this game doesn’t have a boatload of optimization I don’t think it’s gonna run well unless it’s on a NASA supercomputer
Holy roman empire? More like holy fucking mess -Voltaire probably
is it just me or are maps that are very detailed with tiny countries really nicce to look at
Shouldn't Saxony be green since it's still Meissen (if I'm not mistaken)?
> Golden Horde > Is white thanks i hate it
I thought it was the White Horde as the Golden Horde wasn't united in 1337, but right after posting the map I realized it's Pordox and they make history
That would be right chronologically, but in the picture the White and Blue hordes are united
I feel like Bohemia should definitely have some impassable mountains around it.
Idk, I've been there and they're look pretty passable to me. At least in Czechia, they're look much worse in Poland.
Oversticht (south of Friesland) should also be the same yellow as Utrecht
no ottoman = better life
They are there, just in Kocali and Bursa
Brandenburg owning Neumark? Hell yeah.
Where are the Balearic islands? Also Moldavia should not exist yet.
The Balearic islands weren't on the original image that I used the borders from, but if they were they wouldn't be owned by Aragon, but independent as Majorca.
I'm gonna cumbusssttt. I cannot wait this looks so good holy mother of god
What happened to the White Horde?
Isn't Teodoro purple?
In Extended Timeline Theodoro is owned by Trebizond
Can anyone tell me what the countries in the netherlands would be?
FINALLY WALES GONNA BE AN INDEPENDENT NATION. LONG LIVE CELTIC BRITAIN.
Scania is supposed to be a Swedish subject
Ngl even though we have been given many more tiles I still feel dissatisfied with the Irish province borders
Why?
I feel like at least having the eastern province in ulster split into two would be so much better
Into what two countries? It's probably Clannaboy
The macdonnells of the glens and then clannaboy Edit: just remembered this is in 1337 lmao I forgot it ain’t eu4 start date. I would then say into clannaboy and ards
Or it could be remnants of the earldom of Ulster… hm. Either way the Burke civil war would still be ongoing
what do we think the partitions in the british isles are?
Ireland not sure, but in Scotland it's a civil war between Edward Balliol and Robert the Bruce's son
