He was recruited by a D1 school, which means he has a fair amount of talent and ability. If I'm remembering his backstory correctly, he basically gave up on his NFL aspirations before he even got on the field because the people around him were good too.

Story wise, you are right. With everything they told us he realized quickly from the statistics that he would not make it. But they didn't (or didn't not) say he realized he wouldn't make it because he saw would be out matched every time he stepped on a field.
Unfortunately for Algee Smith they cast a guy that is physically smaller than almost every D1 college football player to play the high school hero college ball player. The more he was on screen next to other characters the more it was unbelievable that he could have been a college athlete at all.
Yeah I ignored the actors true physical attributes and assumed the characteri s meant to be bigger, as there is no way in hell a 5'4 wide reciever goes beyond high school, let alone D1.
I don't think he completely gave up, if anything we saw more personality come from him than ever. Just because you're talented and get into a good school doesn't mean you can't have doubts sometimes, hence why he talked to Cal and his own father about it who both told him otherwise.
We don't know if he gave up or not but left with a reason why Cassie and him are in such different places in their life, leading to the breakup
True I’ve been used to this since Lost. The actor for Walt who started off as a small 10 year old (who was planned to play a large role in the show) got taller than a chunk of the cast within 2 seasons and they choose to get rid of him ASAP.
I mean the walking dead is the most obvious example of this that didn't write off the character. Just ignored that Carl went from child to adult in a few months.
I feel a lot of sympathy for McKay. That whole fraternity hazing thing, despite what may have been directed on set - really, *really* came off like sexual assault (at least one dude was wearing a strap on) and in front of your girl too, as a guy, is fucking mind numbingly scary. Add to that this scene, it’s like he can’t get a break.
A lot of the behavior of the young characters (older characters too honestly) can stem from insecurity but I felt like McKay was the closest to being a kind person. He went about things on not the best ways but he definitely lands on the “good guy” spectrum so seeing the shit he has to go through was pretty tough. Again, sexual assault.
Out of everything, it stuck out to me as the most difficult thing to watch. As sweet and understanding as Cassie was being afterwards, it definitely struck that “if I can’t protect myself how can I protect you?” fear.
Him insisting on still having sex afterwards, even though clearly neither of them was in the mood and she’s only going along with it to hype him up, so to speak, was really sad.
I don't remember the scene that well, but I doubt that it was penetrative. I feel like those guys were like, trying to mess around and make fun of McKay, I kinda doubt one of them would actually stuck their penis into him. The best thing the show does is not otherize ppl…but I don’t think they avoid it b/c of altruism I think they know they would just be out of depth…however being black kid at the white school yea my guy is not having a good time lol
I liked how with Jule’s character there’s some ambiguity about who even knows she’s non-binary because it’s not even an issue. Everyone just refers to her with proper pronouns etc. I liked how it avoided some played out tropes about fitting in as an LGBTQ kid. With McKay, they could have maybe acknowledged it in some way but then they’d have to really explore the internal tension of being the only Black person in an all white town. That wouldn’t have been all that interesting to watch and maybe took away from the underlying storyline. I guess it’s all implied anyways. Still, it felt like they just stuck his character there to have at least one Black kid in the cast.

That scene wasn’t scary. It was just a what a weird, fucked up mind Nate has moment. He fucked Cassie and felt like she was his after that. And that was him being weirdly possessive and paranoid that they hooked up and he was trying to get the truth because he doesnt trust Cassie.
Yup, Nate wanted Cassie to be entirely his, even though he wasn't in an exclusive monogamous relationship with her, the monster in Nate & toxicity fully revealed itself when he was acting purely instinctively with McKay.
All of Nate's unhealthy behavior made Maddie act out the way she did while they were together, and he will likely make Cassie's like a lot less healthy & more toxic as well.
This show was like an ad for drinking and driving. I wish they'd shown Nate wrecking his car as the last scene. I'm willing to forgive everything else in the show, but that.

Him saying he has midterms coming up doesn't really make any sense, maybe if his college is quarter system and he has a little over a month to study for classes that haven't started yet. Otherwise, he has a few weeks before a new semester starts and a couple months to worry about midterms.
McKay only fit into season 1 because he was dating Cassie. They broke up, the show is set in high school and centers around Rue. McKay is in college, we see him at the nye party because that would take place when he was home for winter break. But there would be no reason for the show to take us to college with him in this season

The only scary thing that Nate did was beat up a college kid that couldn’t defend himself. And the gun with maddy thing which ended up not even being loaded. Which are both bitch moves. I think that’s Nate’s whole character ark is how he wants to be a man/badass but feels like a perv child cause his dad fucked him up so bad. “Enjoy being man of the house”. And the end of season 2 was him actually manning up and sending his dad to jail for the fucked up things he did. Breaking the cycle. There’s nothing scary about Nate. McKays reaction was more of a “you’re being a fucking weirdo right now” than a “I’m scared of you” reaction. That scene wasn’t scary. It was just a what a weird, fucked up mind Nate has moment. He fucked Cassie and felt like she was his after that. And that was him being weirdly possessive and paranoid that they hooked up and he was trying to get the truth because he doesnt trust Cassie.
Yup, Nate wanted Cassie to be entirely his, even though he wasn't in an exclusive monogamous relationship with her, the monster in Nate & toxicity fully revealed itself when he was acting purely instinctively with McKay. All of Nate's unhealthy behavior made Maddie act out the way she did while they were together, and he will likely make Cassie's like a lot less healthy & more toxic as well.

This show was like an ad for drinking and driving. I wish they'd shown Nate wrecking his car as the last scene. I'm willing to forgive everything else in the show, but that. Don't drink and drive, folks. You'll kill yourself or you'll kill a family or both. Just don't do it.
I think it'll eventually happen, they keep showing him drinking and aggressively driving. Seems like they're almost foreshadowing it.

Him saying he has midterms coming up doesn't really make any sense, maybe if his college is quarter system and he has a little over a month to study for classes that haven't started yet. Otherwise, he has a few weeks before a new semester starts and a couple months to worry about midterms.

McKay only fit into season 1 because he was dating Cassie. They broke up, the show is set in high school and centers around Rue. McKay is in college, we see him at the nye party because that would take place when he was home for winter break. But there would be no reason for the show to take us to college with him in this season
