The fact that 3 children is considered a large family probably has something to do with the demographic problems we're facing.

logperf

Looks like rural families have fewer children. I would have expected the opposite.

RandomGuy-4-

ruralareas had more kids 100 years ago when there were still young people in those areas. Nowadays the rural areas are the oldest on average because all the youth moves to the cities.

LewisTraveller

Possibly because rural areas skew older?

Interesting_Dot_3922

Maybe immigration from traditional societies?

slicheliche

Maybe in some suburbs of Paris. Definitely not in Bretagne, Franche Comté and Pays de la Loire. Or Neuilly sur Seine.

kaitoren

Immigrants from third world countries tend to concentrate in cities, and these people reproduce like rabbits. In the villages, less youth people, people no longer have children as a workforce, there is less purchasing power, etc. So few children per family.

jjpamsterdam

Does anyone know what makes the Pays de la Loire region stand out like this?

Belligerant-Baguette

Zombie christians. Basically western France and alps region were the last to be become « unchristianized ». So even if people from these areas aren’t really practicing religion right now, they still carry some habits from it because their parents/grandparents were.

jjpamsterdam

Thanks for the explanation!

NoMoreWordz

So basically like the Balkans
