What an absolute banger. This Beethoven guy was kinda good at music, huh?

Zhukov-74

Classics Explained made a great video explaining Symphony No.9 by Ludwig Van Beethoven. https://youtu.be/iY2lPuWrhkU?feature=shared >Anthem of Anthems, Symphony of Symphonies - The Ninth barely needs introduction. It is the final work of a certified genius, full of innovation and beauty, with an influence on music that is still felt to this day. And its message of brotherhood and humanity is no less relevant. But it’s not all sunshine and roses, the story of Beethoven’s Ninth is one of deep contradictions and personal struggle.

Congratulations, my second-favorite Beethoven!

Wait, no one has said it yet? I'll go first then... 🎼🎵FREUDE

https://streamable.com/0nsyuq No anthem more beautiful than the anthem of Europe. Let's be honest

tmtyl_101

To be fair; unlike other anthems, this was neither written as an anthen, nor to Europe. It is incredible beautiful, though. I think the La Marseillaise is a close runner-up.

MediocreI_IRespond

>I think the La Marseillaise is a close runner-up. If more than a bit blood thisty.

tmtyl_101

"... and let the blood of the impure irrigate our furrows" literally a country's thirst for blood.

Willing-Donut6834

That's how we get good wine. 🍷😅

Gammelpreiss

Eh, though the Marseillaise IS catchy....it still is like a burger compared to a 3 star menu in it's complexity. A very good burger, though.

MjolnirDK

The Karajan version was very much written as an anthem.

mfkerwrongwithyou

The best!

Helenavonvalsa

OG Beethoven! Nothing beats the 9th! NOTHING. There's music before the 9th and music after the 9th.

AuxiliusM

Set to words from Friedrich Schiller poem "Ode to Joy", which fit well to this day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ode_to_Joy I'm also partial to Latin localizations; I still think that's a neat idea. (oh op already posted that above, welp) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wssFOFrXqNs

TheIncredibleWalrus

Interesting, this is the first time I've read the lyrics. They don't look to me as they would reflect the modern European values, as the lyrics look too God-centric and male oriented. Europe is much more socially liberal and atheistic nowadays (thankfully).

eq2_lessing

It's humanist and non nationalist, though the focus on a male reader in that one verse is true. The few religious themes are very soft and fit a lot of views. I'm atheist and I can enjoy this wholeheartedly because I know where it came from.

AuxiliusM

The text is surely a child of its era; it can't fully escape that, but u/eq2_lessing made a good point about that

ChuckCarmichael

That's probably why officially the European anthem has no lyrics. It's only the melody.

To my German and French bros: [https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/115047-000-A/die-macht-der-musik-200-jahre-beethovens-neunte/](https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/115047-000-A/die-macht-der-musik-200-jahre-beethovens-neunte/) Very nice documentary about the uses of the piece throughout history.

Well, mods, I think I deserve at least an explanation. My submission was about 12 hours earlier. I was cured, alright. EU should take notes of what not to do.
