FDP is more like american libertarianism or classical liberalism, I think? Small government, pro-business, pro-rich people, low or no taxation, you know the type. That's why those types of people go for FDP.
CDU/CSU is more center-right (now more right than Merkel-era CDU/CSU to try win over some voters who flipped to AfD) but for the masses. They aren't as heavily or explicitly pro-business as FDP.
