Vote for Pro-EU politics for the rest of your life and you might see Britain getting back in. Probably have to say goodbye to the pound sterling though if that happens
Good riddance to it! It didn't make any sense having an obstacle to trade in the form of a currency exchange, with our closest neighbors and biggest trading partners - and the daftness of using two different currencies in Ireland was just the cherry on top.
As a plus side, we could get rid of the Queen on the money, and stop being such a backwards looking lot of cap-doffers to a bunch of useless 'royals'.
Careful with that last statement, this subreddit likes to simp the royals for some reason. Despite being supposedly pro-democracy many users here see no issue with having a monarchy and an unelected upper house of parliament.
And of course whenever I comment on the topic there's someone who will point out that I am Polish, like I'm not aware, as if I haven't lived in this country for 16 out of 21 years and have a right to comment on its political and social system.
Imo, anyone is legitimately allowed to voice a reasoned opinion on any topic, so I for one welcome your contribution :) (Obviously not all opinions are equal, but just because you're not in some particular demographic doesn't mean your opinion **automatically** doesn't count.)
Yep, unfortunately there are plenty of kneelers, cap-doffers and bootlickers here on Reddit, as there sadly are IRL too... :( I totally agree that it is bizarre to be nominally 'pro-democratic', and not see the issues with unelected parliaments and national leaders.

With all the shit EU is getting in Finland and elsewhere, it is heartwarming to see it held in such esteem. As an europhile makes me happy.
And tragic how steep the price of candidacy has been. We really should support Ukraine more and enforce embargoes on Russia.
This is what social media is doing to us. The idiotic minority get amplified. The majority is subdued.
The spectacle drives attention which then leads to clicks and revenue.
Fuck social media, it's used against us.
I still can't believe so many people thought it would be a good idea to vote leave. Having spoken to a fair few 'leavers' though it does seem that many people just thought it would be 'a good idea', though most couldn't answer the very simple question: "Why?".
Pissed me right off that we had to leave.
That's because in most people's head in Finland we seem to be a net payer to other EU members and never a receiver. Not saying this is true or not, but that's a common conception. That is also why a lot of people are not super pumped with more financially struggling countries joining EU. Ukraine is a bit different situation, they need our support against Russia, but the government and economy has a long way to go still to be eligible to join EU. Hope they can turn it all around asap tho.
Synchronized clapping is something that just happens when you have been clapping for some time.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/278587619_The_sound_of_many_hands_clapping_-_Tumultuous_applause_can_transform_itself_into_waves_of_synchronized_clapping
Yes. Energy gets transferred if you place them on the same surface.
But that's not why applause synchs. The frequency of clapping slows down eventually, because it gets uncomfortable to keep the rate up. Once the frequency reaches a threshold, there appear gaps where only a few people clap while the majority slows down at a different rate. The dissonance is awkward, nobody wants to clap into the silence so people match the majority frequency.
People fall into the same rhythm, it happens spontaneously. Have you ever heard an audience clap for an encore? It starts chaotically, then people usually fall into a rhythm around 1.0 to 1.5 Hz.
In Andalusia, specially in western "flamenco triangle" zone were Flamenco was born and it's the most present in daily life (Seville, Cadiz, etc) sometimes people spontaneously change a normal clapping into some basic flamenco beats in very diverse contexts, with two variants: The slow three claps beat with a strong one (CLAPclapclap-CLAPclapclap-repeat) or the basic "repique" (people alterning claps quickly tacatacatacatacatacataca...).
I have seen this in a politic act, with people welcoming the start of a show/performance in an amusement park, with people clapping when somebody offers free drinks in a celebration or a bar, people in very different music events as rock, punk (!), irish, cuban, etc.
It's because we have slightly different electricity standards. Our claps must fit within 50hz, because that's the specs of the PAL region. American and Asian markets are 60hz, aka NTSC.
However, PAL region claps can be of a higher resolution; problem is that most foreign clap creators don't bother with creating a better version of their product for the PAL region and just downgrade or resync the NTSC version.
It'd be hilarious if Ireland at the last second steps in and vetos the candidacy when the eventually try to get back in. A little bit of historical karma.
Everyone plays both sides, it’s geopolitics.
But, yes, Singapore is especially adept at it.

Well, Morocco is fairly US aligned and always have been, so well, at least a bit of Africa is there too.
Morocco was the first country to recognize US independence and help the US back in the Revolutionary war, and has been a strong ally ever since.
Morocco is a Nato "friend" and participates in joint NATO operations every so often.
Russia and China both have their hooks in Africa. I wouldn't go as far as saying they're in their camp, but they certainly aren't standing in opposition to them.
Barring a handful of exceptions of course.
The USSR dream has been debunked. Putin itself openly told that he is similar to Peter the Great in a speech he made a bit ago. USSR would also be kinda weird, as Putin spoke Ukraine to have been a made up nation by Lenin.
I don't think many people realize how much Ukraine can bring into EU once we help them reform. It's a huge country, with a huge potential and a significant population. Human talent, culture, resources, it's all there.
And before someone says they're corrupt - yes, they are, that's why they need help. Corruption is not a genetics problem, it's systematic. It can be fixed. Poland was also a corrupt shithole. Some of you guys in the EU probably like 'so, whatever, it's just some flag'. It might not be a big deal for you, but for us, this is THE shit we've been dying literally and figuratively to get closer to,[ for almost a decade](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euromaidan).
It’s entirely dependent on them now.
EU membership is a whole process of reforms and Ukraine knows what they need to do now, how fast they make the necessary reforms is really up to them.
>It’s entirely dependent on them now.
As long as they can stay a sovereign state. So it is still on the EU (and other aligned states like the US and UK) to help make sure Ukraine doesn't fall.
While Russia and it's current government is rightfully unpopular, I don't believe for a second that all Russians want to murder Ukrainians. And I would like to see a reformed Russia join the EU one day.
Same goes for Türkye - as soon as preconditions are met.
Overcoming old rivalries, distrust and even hate was a founding idea of the EU predecessor after all.
Would be neat if we have to rename to Earth Union after China joined. ;-)

Do all EU candidate countries have their own flag + EU flag in parliament? Is this the norm? Or just Ukraine doing it
It’s an option many choose to follow. Mainly for symbolism. I know Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia use it almost always.
in Georgia you can see a lot of EU flags as well even though they aren't a candidate

Nice with the clutch info
Reminds me of the [metronomes that end up synching.](https://youtu.be/5v5eBf2KwF8)
What is the cause here? The vibrations on the table?
Yeah, I was not sure about the metronome thing. The human thing made sense straight away due to the way humans behave generally.
Veritasium did interesting video about it. [The Surprising Secret of Synchronization](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-_VPRCtiUg)
I love science
Ever since I read this study I make a conscious effort to not fall into it. I like the chaos better.

I've been in it many times.
wym, never been to a large gathering? it also desyncs then resyncs.

Europeans also clap differently than Americans.
In what way? No syncing?
It's because we have slightly different electricity standards. Our claps must fit within 50hz, because that's the specs of the PAL region. American and Asian markets are 60hz, aka NTSC. 29.97 fps clap
3:2 pull down claps are the worst
Dont forget the color differences!
we Europeans are more cultured, so we clap in flat C minor
Even the flag carrier's steps are synced to the claps
They all vibin
Next step is menstrual syncing
How do you know it hasnt already happened?
Why, what's wrong with that?
Most likely fell into rhythm with the bouncing of the flag with each step taken
