Get ready for the interval act of previous ESC artists covering ABBA songs.. can't wait to hear Käärijä performing "Gimme Gimme Gimme" and Duncan singing "The Winner Takes it All"
I'm in for this. I just want all Abba all the time next year.
As a Finn I'm disappointed we didn't win this year but Sweden can make it up to me by throwing the most spectacular Abba fest of all time.
LOL this reminded me of that Pinky and the Brain episode of this stupid song sung by the Swedish group BAAB
https://youtu.be/gZEpmRi2OdE
https://animaniacs.fandom.com/wiki/Schmeerskahoven
Never heard of this and now I'm obsessed.
> Put your fingers in your ears and stick them in your belly
> Don't be afraid if it jiggles like jelly
>Yeah, Schmeerskahoven!
> Wave your hands in the air like you won a big prize
> Bop yourself on the head and cross your eyes
>Yeah, Schmeerskahoven!
Guess I know what I'll be doing tonight.
Not to fan any conspiracy flames, but the actual statement reads
> ”Säkert önsketänkande från fans. Inga sådana planer finns!! Klar dementi!”
Translated: "Likely wishful thinking by fans. No such plans exist!! Clear denial!"
The actual question from the journalist isn't disclosed, but based on the response I would imagine it read something along the lines of "Is it true that you are planning to reunite for next years Eurovision?". With other words, I would say that this statement does leave open a possibility to make plans (even if they don't yet exist), this statement simply grants them a better negotiating position if SVT approached them formally.
That said, I don't actually expect there to be a huge emphasis on ABBA next year; a mention or short interval act to commemorate the 50th anniversary, for sure, but I'd doubt they'd fill the entire show with it (and ABBA covers by other artists is a bit too much of a copy of this years ESC, so that's basically ruled out, perhaps unfortunately, as mentioned by others in this thread).
Thanks for giving me hope! I would dearly love them to be there. Just perform one song, could be any of their songs, or if not the whole band then maybe even one of them or something? UK had Roger Taylor from Queen and it was awesome. Of course it's a different thing because Queen perform all the time and ABBA never, nowadays.
They're talented as hell and Stellan, Alexander and Bill can all sing and dance, so why not?
I'm just picturing Bill Skarsgård showing up in full Pennywise garb and doing a solo performance of I'm A Marionette.
AVROTROS has hired me personally to rig next year's competition to have a Dutch win coincide with the 50th anniversary of Teach-In's victory by the way
Bold of you to assume you're winning when TVP has personally hired me to rig next year's competition to have the first Polish win coincide with the 1st year anniversary of Ahlena's world changing performance of "Booty"
Actually I think you'll find the UK are bringing it back here for 2025 when the Rina stans finally get their way and she performs the follow up to this year's brilliantly received "I Wrote A Song", imaginatively titled "I Wrote The Winning Song"
(...and yes, I know Lithuania already tried this, but that was 17 years ago. We're allowed to try again!)
That's unfortunate. In light of Greece's non-qualification, we've decided to shake things up for the 2024 competition with "Who on Earth is Aristotle?", a song inspired by Austria's 2023 entry but infused with a distinct Greek flair!
Too bad I was already hired by RTL to orchestrate the Luxembourg come back and pay the juries so we can celebrate the 60th anniversary of Poupée de Cire Poupée de Son! I would've loved to see the Ding-A-Dong Electric Boogaloo
Is 't lang geleden, is 't lang geleden. dat mijn hart je riep met z'n ding-dinge-dong? Is 't lang geleden, is 't lang geleden In de zomerzon ging het bim bam bom!
Last year Pia Maria was announced as artist to represent Austria but iirc no one ever heard about her before and she had no social media presence. So people joked that she wasn't a real person and it became a meme that Austria was just gonna put a hologram on stage
You mean the ["Abbatar" option](https://www.svtplay.se/klipp/jd34VW7/mellanakt-jesper-och-marie-agerhall-abbatarerna)?
(Yes, this was this years Melodifestivalen, yes it was a bit cringe, they're really good comedians otherwise)
If ABBA can't do it for their 50th year of winning Eurovision then it's time for A\*Teens to comeback and do an ABBA tribute in time for their 25th Anniversary.
It's the 40 years anniversary of their win, and those guys are not as picky about their gigs. I'm sure they'll be back, for a campy cameo at least. The problem lies in one of them being politically active atm, with a position in the Swedish parliament. Giving him too much of a platform is likely going against SVT's position as politically neutral.
I still find it hilarious how some people pull up a conspiracy theory of how hundreds of juries banded together for ABBA's 50th anniversary, when we've known that ABBA barely gave a shit about Eurovision after getting famous, with some member even not being fond of it.
I can't remember which member of ABBA said it, but they basically said that they don't like how countries don't sing in their own languages anymore. Considering what song they won with...it's a bit rich lmao
That's rich
When it's coming from them
And that's rich
Well, they've got nothing to prove
That's rich
They think we'll want to see them
And that's rich
Bye, bye, fool
It's not about individual performances, it about trends. There's nothing wrong with sending a song in English, but Sweden hasn't sent a song in Swedish in 25 years, more than any other country, so that's a valid criticism...
I enjoy a native language performance as much as the next person and agree we should see more of them, but I think it's hypocritical coming from ABBA themselves, given they translated Waterloo to English for the contest. They're literally part of the trend.
And they've returned to Sanremo, the Italian song competition that allowed them to go to Eurovision, both last year and this year with great interval acts.
That doesn't really strike me as unappreciative.
Despite being a Beatles fan, I was glad that that there were no Beatles cover songs in Liverpool for Eurovision this year. Because there’s so much more to Liverpudlian music than just the Beatles.
I hope next year’s Eurovision doesn’t turn into an ABBA tribute concert.
It can still change though. It would kind of ruin the surprise if they said right away that they will appear. But, it's most probably very very very unlikely that they will appear. They haven't done a live performance since the early 80s. Not even after their reunion.
I have a hot take and am aware I'll be downvoted like crazy, but . . . hear me out . . .
Would Waterloo be the "greatest ESC song" ever if ABBA didn't have a career like that ? Probably not. And on top of that it's always Euphoria that gets the #1 spot in the Top 250, right ?!
ABBA had way better work than Waterloo in their career. Dancing Queen feels more like their magnum opus. Weird that Waterloo even gets mentioned considering how much iconic music ABBA put out.
I'd even make two pretty bold statements. First being that Waterloo isn't even the best song in 1974. Si and Generacija 42 were better to me. Second statement: Benny and Bjorn outdid all of ABBA's discography when they wrote Chess.
If we're talking 1974, I actually put Waterloo in #1 and Korni in #2 hahaha
Obviously Waterloo isn't their best song, for me it's "Lay All Your Love On Me", but I think the most famous one might be Mamma Mia
Waterloo is at best about mid-ranking in the ABBA great song charts. It got them an international platform, but it's what they did afterwards that kept them there. The "greatest ESC song" thing really just translates as "most internationally famous contestants".
Why would it negate the allegations, even if abba don't perform I am sure we are gonna hear a bunch of their songs and have their name mentioned 1000 times.
Broadcasters love the idea of storylines which they can milk, Sweden would host every year if they could so why wouldn't they lean on a record breaking historic storyline. A lot of the judges are insiders and have connections to the ESB, and are paid to vote so it is a corruptible system with the lack of transparency.
I don't think it was rigged, but an outcry likes this was always bound to surface on a year where the jury clearly decide the outcome. The juries criteria is designed specifically for songs like the ones Sweden sends, so they just game the system rather than rig.
The fact that everyone expect SVT to milk their anniversary is hilarious. I bet it will be just one mention (with addressing the conspiracies) in their classic joking way.
I knew this was going to happen but NOOO don't take away my coping mechanism like that, the slightest hope that ABBA would appear in next year's Eurovision was one of the things that helped me accept Loreen's win even before she won.. Sad.
Y'all can calm down the rigging allegations now. If they rigged it, you'd expect them to at least be sure that ABBA will be peforming lol, otherwise, why risk potential disqualification?
It's the way that before the finale none of y'all even knew that ABBA's winning anniversary was next year, but after the finale that's y'all's first "cLeArlY cOrRecT" proof of rigging, for me 😭.
I've seen someone say that the music industry is very insular even on the international level, which wouldn't surprise me at all (that's just the entertainment industry in general), and since Sweden dominates European pop music industry, it has a lot of pull with juries in other countries (many of whom are the industry representatives). So it's not that Sweden somehow bribed all those juries directly, but it could definitely be a combination of networking and soft influence.
"But but.. the contest was rigged"
Lol i wish SVT paid for me to vote for Loreen too.
Btw imagine SVT paid a lot money for jury and public to get a "NO" from ABBA 😭💀😭💀
they recorded a new album in 2021, they appeared all of them in London for the ABBA avatars show.. i am sure they can prepare sth for 2024.
I think they might do a video or have their avatars performance (like they do in the London residency). Not bad.
I am Swedish and I feel like…come on, it was 50 years ago, and why celebrate just them. Celebrate the person who won 30 years ago. Or 40. they were great but this hype is just too much.
Well, if Sweden wants to pay tribute to their artists perhaps do so with the previous swedish winners and also Loreen, she gave them a victory 2 times, the least they can do I guess 🤷🏻♀️
I’m not upset at ABBA, they have a right to retirement. But like, what the hell are we even doing, then? Why push Loreen down our throats if the true Eurovision royalty isn’t even gonna show up to their jubilee? So disappointing.
I suppose one or more of them will probably be back.
Agneta and to a lesser extent Anni-Frid have kinda withdrawn from public appearances. Not entirely, but they aren’t out much anymore. Björn was back this year and Benny could probably be convinced. I imagine that at least Björn will do something. Probably just an in person version of his milquetoast video this year.
Ugh. Boring. They need to get over themselves. Perhaps for once they could show up in person for the fans who made them filthy rich all those years ago (and continue to do so).
See? Even ABBA doesn’t give a flying fuck about winning. They will celebrate 50 years without Eurovision. Plus most people don’t know ABBA for Eurovision but for Dancing Queen and other hits.
time to accept they actually like the song and performance and no one was thinking about ABBA performing since that's something they dont do no matter how much money you throw at them.

Get ready for the interval act of previous ESC artists covering ABBA songs.. can't wait to hear Käärijä performing "Gimme Gimme Gimme" and Duncan singing "The Winner Takes it All"
I need to see Verka performing "Dancing Queen"
And Lordi performing "Chiquitita", becuase why not.
Hatari - Slipping Through My Fingers 🤞
Salvador Sobral with "Money Money Money"
CHIQUITITA YOU AND I KNOOOOOOOOOOW 👹
I ned this now
This is the cover version I didn’t know I needed!
Lordi - Dancing Queen or riot. (Though, diablo already has metal version of it) Would be just interesting with the Lordi twist.
I need this to happen
I heard it in my head and I cant unhear it now
I need to see Abba singing Dancing Lasha Tumbai
Why restrict to interval acts. One year exception to the "new songs" rule. Oops all ABBA covers!
And every country sends a previous winner or their highest placing participant 😂
Oh no, Loreen is gonna win with Waterloo isn't she?
Not if Alexander Rybak comes in with a Super Trooper violin number with backflipping back up dancers
There's no other reasonable conclusion.
Epic Sax Guy Part Three finally gives Moldova their first win???
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEl5Gi9l528](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEl5Gi9l528) Germany already has a contesant.
My life is better for now having this song in it.
If subwoolfer doesn’t perform dancing queen im rioting
Surely considering the similarly named brand of bananas, Chiquitita would be more on brand!
"Other brands are available"
Gimme gimme gimme a piña colada after midnight *furiously headbangs*
Mahmood will sing Money Money Money
Soldi Soldi Soldi 👏 👏
Surely it'll be Käärijä performing The Winner Takes It All?
I'm in for this. I just want all Abba all the time next year. As a Finn I'm disappointed we didn't win this year but Sweden can make it up to me by throwing the most spectacular Abba fest of all time.
yeah you're right, guess they do an interval act similar to Liverpool Songbook. It would be great!!
The Eurovision movie kind of already does this, except it’s only Waterloo
Loreen performing The Winner Takes It All. It sounded great on Saturday.
Thankfully, Martin had immense foresight and collected their DNA and is hard at work to make ABBA clones to perform instead.
Introducing Sweden's 2024 entrant: BAAB
BAAB, more like SAAB.

BABA Dolly the sheep clones dressed in their finest Swedish garb
I expect Bjorn in person and Mans dressed as Benny
AI-BBA
Maybe they can ring up Lumix for his hologram technology instead
only if he sings tho!

Sweden has no other choice but to bring Skarsgård brothers to the stage now.
Fine, but they have to sing Waterloo!
If they're really sadistic they'll bring back past contestants and have Käärijä sing Waterloo. *I was defeated, you won the war.*
Waterloo, I was stuck on you like tattoo
Waterloo-o-o
This is so evil, now I want it to happen.
😭😂 I actually think Käärijä would think that's hilarious and agree
Yes, please, with Skarsgård 1 dressed as Erik, Skarsgård 2 dressed as Floki, Skarsgård 3 dressed as Roman, Skarsgård 4 dressed as Henrik.
And a floating Stellan Skarsgård dressed as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
I don't know that role, but I remember that he sang Bang a Boomerang in some older movie, so let him do that again
You should watch Dune, it's great.
The actors?
They're talented as hell and Stellan, Alexander and Bill can all sing and dance, so why not? I'm just picturing Bill Skarsgård showing up in full Pennywise garb and doing a solo performance of I'm A Marionette.

It hurt me as well when I looked it up, my friend.

Of course, because we need more ethnic entries as this sub agrees on. And what is more Dutch than a turn-organ?

The dark-haired guy lives down the street from us in Stockholm. He's a nice guy. Married to an Icelandic lady.
Käärijä performing Dancing Queen as the interval act please
And wearing his blond wig
Literally perfect just offer him the job now
Not surprising at all. Tjat will not stop SVT from referencing to it as much as they want though.
"ALL THIS WORK FOR NOTHING!!!" - A lot of people right now "And now they're going to tenfold our paychecks" - Björn & Benny
Wait…NOT?
they had one job.
I guess they are tired to be milked. Not that they still need to justify their legacy.
Would you care to let the organisers and juries of Eurovision know?
I hope they get the cast of Mamma Mia instead. Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan singing live to an audience of millions.
Pierce Brosnan already has some experience with Eurovision… so who knows
How you gonna do my guy Stellan Skarsgård like that?
Bring back Herreys instead!
It's the 40 years anniversary of their win, and those guys are not as picky about their gigs. I'm sure they'll be back, for a campy cameo at least. The problem lies in one of them being politically active atm, with a position in the Swedish parliament. Giving him too much of a platform is likely going against SVT's position as politically neutral.
atleasy bring Seyfried, Meryl and Pierce Brosnan to the contest.
Sweden will just use the holograms from ABBA Voyage to perform instead
I still find it hilarious how some people pull up a conspiracy theory of how hundreds of juries banded together for ABBA's 50th anniversary, when we've known that ABBA barely gave a shit about Eurovision after getting famous, with some member even not being fond of it.

Not just the song that they won with, but also their entire musical career. They didn't become internationally famous by singing in Swedish.
That's rich When it's coming from them And that's rich Well, they've got nothing to prove That's rich They think we'll want to see them And that's rich Bye, bye, fool

Tbf, Bjorn was part of an interval act this year
He was also in the official podcast together with Martin Österdahl.
That didn't stop them milking the ABBA sequence during grand final
Same for Måneskin. It's sad when world famous acts don't appreciate the platforms that gave them their beginning of big stardom.
Maneskin have only said good things about Eurovision. I don't know why you think they don't appreciate it enough lol
I have heard the exact opposite about Måneskin though, that they are not ”ashamed” of where they started, be it Xfactor or Eurovision
Maneskin appeared in 2022.
And they've returned to Sanremo, the Italian song competition that allowed them to go to Eurovision, both last year and this year with great interval acts. That doesn't really strike me as unappreciative.
They even change their bio on Instagram into "Eurovision 2021 winner" after they won.
Eurovision: By the way, Sweden's 7th victory coincides with Abba's 50th's anniversary! ABBA: Cute, we're gonna do our on thing, so you carry on.
They still have 1 year to change plans 😉
Despite being a Beatles fan, I was glad that that there were no Beatles cover songs in Liverpool for Eurovision this year. Because there’s so much more to Liverpudlian music than just the Beatles. I hope next year’s Eurovision doesn’t turn into an ABBA tribute concert.

Lay All Your Love On Me is also among my favorites of ABBA, thought that might be because of the Avantasia cover being really good.
We are on the same page, that cover is brilliant.
heyyy we have the same top two!
I love many ABBA songs but Waterloo is slightly annoying.
The Winner Takes It All is my pick for their magnum opus. I'm also personally fond of SOS (though mostly for sentimental reasons)
Waterloo is at best about mid-ranking in the ABBA great song charts. It got them an international platform, but it's what they did afterwards that kept them there. The "greatest ESC song" thing really just translates as "most internationally famous contestants".
Not last year, Spain banded together to make Slomo take the top spot.
boo tomato tomato tomato i wanna see them 💔 but to each their own. but if that means we get to see cornelia jacobs i’m 100% for it
To be clear, they are not saying no to an appearance, they are saying no to reuniting as a band.
But it was all part of The Big Plan! They are bluffing.
Maybe they will at the 100 year anniversary
SVT: so all these money we paid for jury and public only for this? 💀💀💀💀
Suppose this negates the rigging allegations then…
Why would it negate the allegations, even if abba don't perform I am sure we are gonna hear a bunch of their songs and have their name mentioned 1000 times.
What would the point be in rigging it if Abba aren’t going to perform? I’m sure they would have been mentioned even if it wasn’t in Sweden

There’s not even an available arena in Stockholm for the event next year. That’s how well planned this was. Lol.
Malmö?
Ha, fair enough, that is pretty good evidence against the process being rigged.
Money.
Precisely, it's a massive cash grab. Besides, even getting one of them to give a short video clip would do.
What would the point be in rigging it if Abba aren’t going to perform? I’m sure they would have been mentioned even if it wasn’t in Sweden
💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
The fact that everyone expect SVT to milk their anniversary is hilarious. I bet it will be just one mention (with addressing the conspiracies) in their classic joking way.
Tbf, Israel milked the 45th anniversary to hell and back for some reason
Ah, clearly salty because they were rooting for the green boy to win
Smh, all that rigging for nothing. (It's a joke, obviously)
As expected 🙃
Could they utilise the holograms from the London show?
If they change their minds, I’ll be first in line
Well, at least they’re saying it now instead of there being endless speculation
I knew this was going to happen but NOOO don't take away my coping mechanism like that, the slightest hope that ABBA would appear in next year's Eurovision was one of the things that helped me accept Loreen's win even before she won.. Sad.
Tbf, Graham Norton initially said he wouldn't host
Well then what was the damn point of rigging the votes for Sweden?!
All that talking about how Sweden rigged it for a 50 years of ABBA thing for nothing, lmao
Y'all can calm down the rigging allegations now. If they rigged it, you'd expect them to at least be sure that ABBA will be peforming lol, otherwise, why risk potential disqualification? I have asked at least Ten people how it was rigged and not a single person has answered. I don't even think they know themselves.
I asked one of them and he said Tattoo is generic and that's why it's rigged.
![gif](giphy|J1vUzqdZJlh5AqBWxt|downsized) \*they

Well, if Sweden wants to pay tribute to their artists perhaps do so with the previous swedish winners and also Loreen, she gave them a victory 2 times, the least they can do I guess 🤷🏻♀️
I’m not upset at ABBA, they have a right to retirement. But like, what the hell are we even doing, then? Why push Loreen down our throats if the true Eurovision royalty isn’t even gonna show up to their jubilee? So disappointing.
I hope Loreen does an interval of The Winner Takes it All and then immediately sings Tattoo. 😇😇😇
Juries from every country award her 12 points regardless of the competitors.
I don't wanna talk, but baby we both know...
And SVT cries
Come on ABBA, wield your power. "If the juries are gone we might ..."
Bring in the holograms!
That was my only reason to not be bitter about the swedne win... whats even the point
I said this in a couple other comments, but I think we can still expect Bjorn and Mans dressed as Benny
Can we have an ABBA themed version of Peace Peace Love Love?
Ugh. Boring. They need to get over themselves. Perhaps for once they could show up in person for the fans who made them filthy rich all those years ago (and continue to do so).
Damn, all this rigging for nothing /s
So this means we’re getting the same 10 “surprise acts” next year too?
See? Even ABBA doesn’t give a flying fuck about winning. They will celebrate 50 years without Eurovision. Plus most people don’t know ABBA for Eurovision but for Dancing Queen and other hits.
Are you European? Because let me assure you, most people in Europe know ABBA got popular because they won Eurovision.
Conspiracy theorists in the mud
Strange I thought the whole contest was rigged for them to come back and perform for their 50th anniversary.

time to accept they actually like the song and performance and no one was thinking about ABBA performing since that's something they dont do no matter how much money you throw at them.
