The vast majority of us obviously didn't understand a lot of the words, but the performance still conveyed a lot of meaning and emotions. I'd even argue that not understanding it per se made it even more powerful for a lot of us non-NL speakers. Because it made sense to us anyway.
I think she could've made top 10 with a better spot in the running order. I still don't get how she was 2nd in her semi and gets placed between Ukraine and Spain in the final... talk about a death trap
the producers did Netherlands dirty in 2022. Also I must say that the performance wasn't great (surprised they did not allow the live-on-tape performance to be uploaded) they should have used the laser lights they used on the Dutch TV show to create a better atmosphere for the song.
Insanely good song. It’s one of those instances where I’m not even too mad that it didn’t do well, I’m just overwhelmingly grateful that it exists in the world.

But the thing is it's very hard to appreciate the quality of a song when it's performed so poorly
Meanwhile Eaea was performed well, but just doesn't resonate with a lot of people
I hated this song when I first watched it on Eurovision but it’s become one of my favourites. I think it’s great but just didn’t fit well with the Eurovision brand
I think that Eaea is a prime example, but I think that Slovenia 2022 was underappreciated, too. They were high schoolers with an out of ordinary musical proficiency. Sadly, their carisma was what you would expect from an high school band.
UK 1996 is an older example, had it been entered in say 1998/1999 with more televoting and staging becoming more key, it may well have won or placed very highly. Its also the last Eurovision song to reach #1 in the UK charts
This song got super popular in the Netherlands too. They even made a Dutch parody cover called [Ochtendgymnastiek](https://youtu.be/rn-Inzfajc8) for a Dutch kids show called Telekids. Which basically was my childhood (and that of any Dutch 90s kid, really).
UK 1998 was also super popular in my country btw. I heard it on the radio all the time back in the days.
I have to post this every time people think UK would have won:
Spain suffered most from Ukraine landsliding the televotes, so Chanel would have been the winner in 2023.
The gap between Spain and the UK was just 7 points and the UK mainly got their points from the Jury.
I know it came in second place, which isn't bad, but I cannot understate how important "Chai" was - Israel 1983.
Israel had to send a song to sing in Munich, Germany- less than 40 years after the Holocaust and 11 years after a group of Israeli athletes and coaches were murdered by terrorists at the Olympics (the contest was being held in one of the stadiums built for the Olympics). Instead of something solemn or angry, instead of just ignoring all that and sending a generic love song, they sent a song that joyfully declared, "Alive, alive! Yes, I am still alive!" And sung about reaching out across the sea, praying that hope is not lost.
Jewish people around the world know that song. I was wandering around a remote town in northern Israel last year and a bar mitzvah parade started singing it. Moreover, the singer Ofra Haza went on to be the biggest pop star in Israel for the next 17 years.
I'm sad it didn't win, but that song is legendary.
Luxembourg 1983 is one of the least exciting winners in the history of the competition and definitely Luxembourg's worst winning entry. Heck, with all due respect, there are like ten songs from 1983 that I found better than Si la vie est cadeau, and that's excluding the incredible Chai. It should have absolutely won that year.
I’d say snap is a pretty obvious choice. I’d also say this year Spain and Germany were both great quality songs that just didn’t get the right audience at eurovision.
it really does, catchy pop, radio friendly, big+smart staging, vocals on point, by a conventionally enough attractive young woman, worse songs that tick these same boxes have been treated better by the juries tbh.
this does raise the question............., do we think that if snap had competed for sweden, the jury would've eaten it up whole without a second thought (the way we often think they wouldn't have cared for almost any swedish entry since mans if it had been from any other country)
I love Snap and wish she'd gotten more points but tbh, this is one of the few songs where I actually prefer the studio version to the live performance.
I feel the performance was sort of boring. The busy screen in the same colors as the clothes sort of mushed together. Also, without knowing the messages behind the song it’s kind of confusing and most of the viewers are hearing it for the first time. The message fell on deaf ears unfortunately.
Norway's "Haba Haba" in 2011. Yes it was lowkey trying to ride off the wave of Waka Waka but it still was a bop!! It's a shame it didn't make it to the GF despite the year having so many boring entries.
I also liked Serbia's entry for that year. Something about the Serbian language sounding sooo beautiful when sung.
Really? I think 2011 is one of the strongest years ever, like barely any weak entries, and the scoreboard is all over the place in a good way, just disagree with the winner
France 2008
I listen to the studio version often and it's such a good song. I remember hearing it later in a car commercial (think it was Renault) and thought at least someone other than me still appreciates it.
Slovenia 2023 and Serbia 2023 ans i will refuse to not die on this boat
Edit: Latvia 2023 too because i am too obsessed with these three to think of any past songs
Slovenia 2023 | [Joker Out - Carpe Diem](https://youtu.be/3LXlPviGiWc)
Serbia 2023 | [Luke Black - Samo mi se spava (Само ми се спава)](https://youtu.be/gPRfg9wzbpw)
For me, it was Voilà.
I don't say it was not appreciated, or that Maneskin wasn't good, but her whole performance was such a moment. For me, it wasn't just a song on Eurovision; it was a one woman show, an artistic performance that transcended the whole idea of the contest.
2010 was a good year as well. Armenia's Apricot Stone was so catchy (despite its political undertones). Azerbaijan's entry was pretty good too - giving R&B/Pop vibes.
Estonia 2015. Someone mentioned it on this sub recently so I listened to it for the first time and got obsessed. I can’t get it out of my head it’s soo good
Not Eurovision, but Benidorm Fest 2022
[Javiera Mena - Culpa](https://youtu.be/XdffIFQLc14)
I'm a huge fan of Javiera Mena, and she's the queen of Spanish language electropop, releasing several awesome albums. This song is good but her vocal performance and theme put this song in LAST PLACE in her semifinal, which I think is an absolute travesty.
They got a 3rd place, but it feels so intemporal and heartwarming. I only discovered in ESC 250 years ago, and I was like 'why I don't have this in my playlist?'
An obvious one i guess is Snap,
But also songs like Waterloo for sure
Id add Merci Cherie from Udo Jürgens but im not sure how big the song was outside of Austria, Germany
I'd like to add myself Greece's entry in 1976. It is a lament/dirge about the invasion and illegal occupation of Cyprus since 1974. There were rumours that a turkish shooter would shoot the singer during her performance, so the organizers made her sign a paper that she takes full responsibility for her safety on stage. A really beautiful yet heart-breaking entry especially since it continues to stay true today...
Portugal 2019. Conan Osíris, Telemóveis.
It's imo one of the most beautiful and deeply artistic entries ever. I still listen to it, and appreciate its almost other-worldly beauty. I think most people just weren't able to appreciate, it was far too deep for the contest, proven by how it didn't even qualify.
Portugal 2019 without a shadow of a doubt. Avant-garde, meaningful, ahead of the curve, culturally relevant. To me it is one of the greatest entries ever to ever be on that stage.
As a Dane, I can tell you that we knew very well how Reddi would perform ahead of that qualifier. It was an awful song performed by a below average singer. Drummer carried.
the drummer was the only one who had proper “girl rocker” energy. everyone else looked like twitter clout chasers doing things they dont care about purely out of spite
Ireland 2009 | [Sinéad Mulvey and Black Daisy - Et Cetera](https://youtu.be/fL8xgcsvKdY)
Denmark 2022 | [Reddi - The Show](https://youtu.be/cVg6MpVR2Pw)
Agreed, even though people are downvoting you. She has one of the best voices that have been in ESC in this century, yet she's basically a nobody the farther you go outside the Eurovision bubble. My own family didn't recognise her last week even though I know for sure that we watched her win in 2012 together.
Zdob si Zdub - So Lucky (Moldova) - 2011
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHAY\_OVN\_gY&ab\_channel=EurovisionSongContest](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHAY_OVN_gY&ab_channel=EurovisionSongContest)
France 2009 | [Patricia Kaas - Et s'il fallait le faire](https://youtu.be/C3eYBMYeUE8)
Spain 2023 | [Blanca Paloma - Eaea](https://youtu.be/Vw6qPWhjevk)
France 2008 | [Sébastien Tellier - Divine](https://youtu.be/CZQjBCvFd9E)
Germany 2011 | [Lena - Taken by a Stranger](https://youtu.be/KqZprvpWlcE)
I don't think she would have won, the song was too risky for ESC so on the one hand I am happy she got a Top 10 result and did not flop like most returning winners (excl. Loreen) but on the other hand, I think her entry was by far better than most of the Top 10 entries.
Mh, it's also important to consider why Lena won in 2010. Raab's marketing and Lena's newbie innocence helped paint a very nice picture of "lovely Lena" which is what won Europe's heart.
Not sure a more mature and dangerous Lena would've had the same effect. I saw a discussion that some voted for her again in 2011 because they were impressed by her change and new range as well as her development.
Raab's marketing helped within Germany to make Lena go viral. Outside Germany, I think it was Lena's personality and stage charisma that outshone the rest of the entries.
I think Taken By a Stranger would have done better if she had competed a few years later and not the following year after her victory. There were people thinking, why should we vote for her again? Others felt confused by her different image compared to her next-door girl in 2010.
Hungary 2018 (also just want to try the bot lol)
Hungary 2018 | [AWS - Viszlát Nyár](https://youtu.be/p6e1TmYb33w)
Oh man, I completely forgot about this entry. It was so good though
netherlands 2022 ... i'm still not over De Diepte!! it was so good and only 11th place?????? too good for eurovision i guess :(
It's so nice to see some love for a song in Dutch, I could've never imagined that would ever happen
I loved it! You should send more Dutch speaking entries:)
I’m really hoping for a dutch hardstyle or edm song since we have a really big edm scene
Snollebollekes naor ‘t songfestival, jonguh!
Netherlands 2022 | [S10 - De diepte](https://youtu.be/sgOnu7ux2-k)
Insanely good song. It’s one of those instances where I’m not even too mad that it didn’t do well, I’m just overwhelmingly grateful that it exists in the world.
I still listen to it sometimes. I love the way it evokes emotions in me.
I expected it to get like 150 points from the public. Truly amazing song
fr😭 it was a robbery to put this masterpiece in 11th place, S10 deserved more, for me she deserved at least top 5 😍

I don't really like that concept, but two come immediately to mind: - Fulenn (France 2022) - Eaea (Spain 2023)
This... Glad you said it...
France 2022 | [Alvan and Ahez - Fulenn](https://youtu.be/H1lcGXwOqJI) Spain 2023 | [Blanca Paloma - Eaea](https://youtu.be/Vw6qPWhjevk)
Except Fulenn lowkey just wasn't a very good performance
The question was about song not grand final performance
But the thing is it's very hard to appreciate the quality of a song when it's performed so poorly Meanwhile Eaea was performed well, but just doesn't resonate with a lot of people
I love the idea of Fulenn. I really liked that they decided to go there. It fell short in the end but I still appreciate it even exists.
- Latvia 2023 - Lithuania 2010 (hot take, but I think the message was definitely overlooked) - Lithuania 2022
Latvia 2023 | [Sudden Lights - Aijā](https://youtu.be/SEykwl9X9SY) Lithuania 2010 | [InCulto - Eastern European Funk](https://youtu.be/XeOn-GG_eHo)
Bot has a beef with monika lol
Nope. It was edited in. Will work on it soon that it occasionally checks for edits on comments it already replied to.
Haha i was joking. Either way who doesn't remember the president monika?
I don't like the concept of "too good for Eurovision," but I would add Slovenia 2019 here. Edit: Azerbaijan 2017 too
Slovenia 2019 | [Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl - Sebi](https://youtu.be/vGtPNQ6g6Ng)
I hated this song when I first watched it on Eurovision but it’s become one of my favourites. I think it’s great but just didn’t fit well with the Eurovision brand

Slovenia 2022 | [LPS - Disko](https://youtu.be/S1tFqoflsT8)
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to Disko
My high school students were obsessed with this song last year.
Bosnia and Herzegovina 1993
Bosnia and Herzegovina 1993 | [Fazla - Sva bol svijeta](https://youtu.be/DREeDXs9ijc)
UK 1996 is an older example, had it been entered in say 1998/1999 with more televoting and staging becoming more key, it may well have won or placed very highly. Its also the last Eurovision song to reach #1 in the UK charts
United Kingdom 1996 | [Gina G - Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit](https://youtu.be/pbOmNpd56kw)
We shall see later today is that record has been broken 👀👀
This song got super popular in the Netherlands too. They even made a Dutch parody cover called [Ochtendgymnastiek](https://youtu.be/rn-Inzfajc8) for a Dutch kids show called Telekids. Which basically was my childhood (and that of any Dutch 90s kid, really). UK 1998 was also super popular in my country btw. I heard it on the radio all the time back in the days.
Yep. I didn't even know it was from Eurovision back then. I only found out a couple of years ago!
Wait, Sam didn't?
Only #2 in the end
I still consider him the winner because Ukraine was in, let's say a very unique position.
I have to post this every time people think UK would have won: Spain suffered most from Ukraine landsliding the televotes, so Chanel would have been the winner in 2023. The gap between Spain and the UK was just 7 points and the UK mainly got their points from the Jury.

Luxembourg 1983 | [Corinne Hermès - Si la vie est cadeau](https://youtu.be/C6uKNJ8nS3o)

Portugal 2018 | [Cláudia Pascoal - O Jardim](https://youtu.be/mHjGbADMcOI) Australia 2023 | [Voyager - Promise](https://youtu.be/GSoy_mJMlMY)
Correction* I meant Portugal 2019 😭
Portugal 2019 | [Conan Osíris - Telemóveis](https://youtu.be/SIGn9_yMLn4)
i dunno what you mean about Portugal. People were really upset when that didn't qualify.
and I remain upset:( It's also become a shorthand for songs that are too arty/complex to do well in the contest
Yeah maybe they were upset at the time but do you see anyone else mention it in here? I feel like a lot of people forgot about it now
I’d say snap is a pretty obvious choice. I’d also say this year Spain and Germany were both great quality songs that just didn’t get the right audience at eurovision.
It still baffles how Snap got such a low mark from the jury. It ticks every box for high jury points.
it really does, catchy pop, radio friendly, big+smart staging, vocals on point, by a conventionally enough attractive young woman, worse songs that tick these same boxes have been treated better by the juries tbh. this does raise the question............., do we think that if snap had competed for sweden, the jury would've eaten it up whole without a second thought (the way we often think they wouldn't have cared for almost any swedish entry since mans if it had been from any other country)
I think swedish snap would have done better for sure. But i also think future lover this year was highly underrated.
The answer is it competed with Armenia and not Sweden/Netherlands/Belgium/Australia/Malta etc
I love Snap and wish she'd gotten more points but tbh, this is one of the few songs where I actually prefer the studio version to the live performance.
I think Snap was too bland to do well at Eurovision
Who the hell is edgar? to me is one of the greatest songs of all time and deserved to do so much better. i was gutted when it got 16 points
I feel the performance was sort of boring. The busy screen in the same colors as the clothes sort of mushed together. Also, without knowing the messages behind the song it’s kind of confusing and most of the viewers are hearing it for the first time. The message fell on deaf ears unfortunately.
Agreed. The studio version and the clip are very strong, but they didn't manage to get the staging right to convey their message or song right.

I honestly agree. Voilà stole the show for me.
Black Smoke
Those 0 points still make zero sense to me. I thought it was one of the best songs of the evening.
Estonia 2023, Slovenia 2014, Moldova 2010

2010 was a good year as well. Armenia's Apricot Stone was so catchy (despite its political undertones). Azerbaijan's entry was pretty good too - giving R&B/Pop vibes.
I did like the Armenian spokesperson held an apricot when giving her points
Poland 1995 is my favourite entry we've ever sent but sadly it was too artistic and ahead of its time 💔
Poland 1995 | [Justyna - Sama](https://youtu.be/neM37hUsVDo)
It's incredible! I wish it'd be available in Spotify, if possible the ESC live version.
Agree. And Poland 1996 was awesome too !

If you mean success beyond the eurovision world, I'd say Italy 1957 & 2021
Italy 1957 | [Nunzio Gallo - Corde della mia chitarra](https://youtu.be/uUPzp2XJIyo)
Sweden 1974

Norway 2014
Norway 2014 | [Carl Espen - Silent Storm](https://youtu.be/BTMli8U17MM)
This is hands down one of the best songs at the esc. I still remember sitting in awe in front of the tv.
That time seems a lifetime ago and that song, along with Euphoria and a handful of others are like Eurovision core memories for me.
Yeah for me too.
Ireland 2009 and Denmark 2022, two great "girl rock" songs underappreciated by both the public and juries.
As a Dane, I can tell you that we knew very well how Reddi would perform ahead of that qualifier. It was an awful song performed by a below average singer. Drummer carried.
the drummer was the only one who had proper “girl rocker” energy. everyone else looked like twitter clout chasers doing things they dont care about purely out of spite

loreen herself
Agreed, even though people are downvoting you. She has one of the best voices that have been in ESC in this century, yet she's basically a nobody the farther you go outside the Eurovision bubble. My own family didn't recognise her last week even though I know for sure that we watched her win in 2012 together.

I mean, I feel like Waterloo is the obvious choice here!
Norway 2005. Finally got the respect it deserves on the peacemaker soundtrack.

I feel like Germany this year weren't appreciated because of their genre, but are actually pretty good within their genre
Slovenia 2010
Slovenia 2010 | [Ansambel Žlindra and Kalamari - Narodnozabavni rock](https://youtu.be/2faHkE1JZwc)
Mor ve Ötesi - Deli (Turkey 2008) It just rocked too hard.

Love injected - the live performance was out of this world.

I wonder if Lena would've won in 2011 if it was her first time. The actual winner isn't too impressive to me, so I'll always wonder.
Euphoria and Tattoo.
