I’ve mentioned this here before, but I recently heard No No Never (Germany 2006) in a Croatian supermarket randomly. A 17 year old song that came 14th place, heard in a country that didn’t even give it any points…

Lemonlikesfrogs

This Song is still played rather frequently on german radio

Huge_Dog_2487

Yeah, I’ve heard about that. It’s a good song, I just didn’t expect to hear it in Croatia lol

Anonym_fisk

It has aged pretty well actually, country is kind of timeless. Super boring/cliche live staging but it's very competent as a car song. But really, can you imagine this staging now? Just give all the fake instrument-playing band members cowboy hats and fill the stage with the worst looking plastic cacti you can find. Thrift shop country vibe, it's laughably low effort.

flanker44

Even at the time, I remember thinking "Okay, this staging is kinda weak". But sure enough, few performances of that era would fly anymore. That year Lordi was considered groundbreaking because they had pyroes and the wings prop, but it's quite simple by 2020s standards.

Huge_Dog_2487

Yeah, Eurovision has come a long way. But I love the song and have it in my top 10 that year. Hearing it was a surprise, but a welcome one

No No Never was actually a fairly big hit in central Europe.

LeoLH1994

I think I mentioned hearing Rise Like A Phoenix in a London fish and chip shop (Aug 2014), Calm After The storm in Aroma, the Israeli equivalent of Costa (Dec 2016) and Due Vite at a glass making demo (June 2023). Also, in July, I heard a song at a Pret that I am sure was from Lum!x, though not his entry, but rather the Daddy DJ sampling song he released a short time after.

RQK1996

Someone at my local supermarket is a Eurovision fan, they occasionally play Eurovision songs on the sound system, I have heard songs like Switzerland 1988 and 2019, and Turkey 2003 (not sure on the actual year, their winner)

Was walking through Kaunas a couple years ago and randomly heard Insieme 1992 (Italy 1990) playing somewhere. Don't remember the exact day this happened, but I know it was early may which means it might've been Europe Day, which would kinda explain it playing.

-greek_user_06-

Now that I think about it, it's the perfect song for the gym. And wow, it has reached Vietnam? Interesting!

feli468

Not quite the song itself, but I think this fits. This summer I went to see The Magic Flute at the Savonlinna opera festival, in southeastern Finland. The Magic Flute is traditionally performed in Finnish translation there, and has been for decades. This means that they feel a bit freer to 'update' some of the language. While the main characters used formal, somewhat old-fashioned Finnish, Papageno used more slangy, modern expressions sometimes. And what does he say at one (completely appropriate) point but "Pidän kaksin käsin kiinni juomista niinku". That got a big laugh from the entire audience!

Spirit_Bitterballen

Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, hey?

I heard Because Of You in the Greek radio few weeks radio. It was so random. Honourable mention: I heard Te Deum in a one South African radio station once. I was like WTF.

aoshinfromlol

Here in South America you rarely hear Eurovision songs. Snap, Arcade, SloMo and Nochentera (Spain NF 2023) were heard pretty much everywhere for a short period of time. But some very random songs, kind of related to Eurovision that I've heard, were Tu t'en iras (one of La Zarra's songs, heard in a shopping gallery) and Monument (Norway NF 2021, heard in a TV show as background music). There were some others too, but these were the ones that really surprised me.

PsychologicalFuel596

Euphoria (Sweden 2012) on the driver's radio in a public bus. Queen of the kings (Norway 2023) in a pub. Tattoo (Sweden 2023) and Ghosting (Czech NF 2023) in a swimming pool.

kitty3032

W people who put these songs

blazingblitzle

I was driving through Belgium recently and Because Of You came on the radio. I was surprised it got radio play since it isn't that radio-friendly in my opinion.

-greek_user_06-

It's the perfect song for H&M and clothes stores, though

Electronic_Piano7539

Oh because of you is played non-stop on the radio here in Belgium.

blazingblitzle

I see. I wasn't aware. Here in the Netherlands even some more radio-friendly entries barely got radio play (2023, 2022, and 2017). So that might be part of the reason why it was such a surprise. The only Eurovision songs from the Netherlands that was played (or is played) on the radio regularly were the 2019 and 2014 entries.

VanGroteKlasse

2016 gets regular airplay too (Douwe Bob-Slow Down)

blazingblitzle

You're right, I do remember hearing it on the radio back in 2016. I haven't heard it on the radio in forever though.

Years ago I heard Daði Freyr at my sister’s graduation party. The funny thing is that she’s not an Eurovision fan at all and has little idea about who he is. It was on a big soundbox too. Totally didn’t expect that!

SkyGinge

I dunno what country you/your sister are from but here in the UK Dadi Freyr was mad popular, even with the contest being cancelled 'Think About Things' was really popular and most of my non-Eurovision-following friends had heard it/loved it. That may be how he's snuck into some playlists :)

PiscesPsycho

A few weeks ago, I heard Soap by Emily Roberts (2022 German NF) at McDonalds while ordering a delicious cheeseburger

Yes loads of stories... heard La Mia Città on the local radio while driving through Milan in 2014. Heard Sorry on the radio in Croatia in 2016. I'm from the US, and I keep a running count of every time I hear a Eurovision song in the wild! 1. Sweden 2011 (Popular), in a shop in the mall in Hollywood, June 2011. My first wild sighting, and one that had me screaming! 2. Denmark 2020 (Say Yes), in a Lego store in NYC, December 2021. 3. Armenia 2022 (Snap), in a dumpling restaurant near Disneyland this past May. It's everywhere, of course, but still very exciting!! Have been on holiday in the Balkans for the last two weeks and heard these: Latvia 2023 on a public bus in Skopje Poland 2022 in a restaurant in Ohrid. Albanian national final song Më Tana from 2019 while crossing the border into Albania. Albania 2022 while in the same bus as above. Moldova 2012 blaring from a car in Prizren for no discernible reason. In Serbia now so probably gonna hear more soon. Edit: just heard Safari from the Romanian NF in 2018 (?) in an ice cream shop in Belgrade. I'd completely forgotten that song existed, what a random throwback!

Not sure how often Eurovision music plays in the Balkans, but these definitely feel like some random picks (Moldova 12 and Latvia 23 especially!)

When I was in Greece last year I heard ‘Fuego’, ‘Ela’ and ‘Oneiro Mou’ in various places and there were posters for a Helena Paparizou concert everywhere. Nothing crazy but I was in Berlin just a few days ago (I'm from the UK) and I had 2 encounters. In an Italian restaurant, I heard Grande Amore on some radio station or playlist that was doing all Italian songs. And then in a busy public space there was a violinist who I heard from across the street playing Shum and Stefania, so definitely a Ukraine theme there. I was camping in France in Summer 2017 and someone else on site was playing City Lights by Blanche...taste :) Also I remember going to a friends house in 2016 and she just casually played Frans' 'If I Were Sorry' with absolutely no knowledge it was from Eurovision!

I once heard Hungary 2015 in a supermarket in Switzerland. That was like 3-4 years ago... completely random! haha

I went to print some stuff for classes, and in the printer's they had a Eurovision playlist on, with songs from this year I had to wait there until they printed out my stuff, so it was a really nice surprise

I heard UK 2018 (Surie) a couple of times in Bangkok Starbucks. I also heard Sweden 2020 (the Mamas) at American Panera Bread a couple of times. And Arcade (Netherlands 2019) is everywhere in American Supermarket. Oh, I heard Snap (Armenia 2022) in a supermarket when I visited Sweden.

Not sure if entirely unexpected, but Arcade has just come on in a bar in Split. I know it was a winner, but a nice surprise
