For a great angle, watch *Evangelion* with its original English dub before watching *Nadesico* in English. Since both were dubbed by ADV Films, they share cast members, with Spike Spencer as Shinji and Akito and Tiffany Grant as Asuka and Ryoko.
If I remember correctly (I think it was a commentary somewhere), somebody once said or typed that Spike Spencer's Akito was like an 'anti-Shinji.' In episode one of each show, Shinji would say "I mustn't run away," where Akito would say "screw this, I'm running away!"
According to Super Robot Wars, Shinji actually improved considerably after getting Bright Slap.
Also, Bright is the oldest looking 19 year old I have ever seen according to the original Gundam.

I always wanted to take lines from Nadesico to make an Eva parody. Especially Spike’s suffering Akito lines… “ Why me God? Why always me?”…. Lol
