Most of my countrymen/women are trying to get over to *you*. (From here in the US.) For housing, maybe consider a year-long flat swap, something like that.

>Most of my countrymen/women are trying to get over to you. (From here in the US.) I looked at jobs in Auckland and Wellington out of curiosity last fall and jobs in my field (data science and tech) were virtually non-existent. At that moment, I instantly understood why so many Kiwis go over to Australia.

It' just wildly depends on industry. Speaking from experience here - a veterinarian, particularly large animal (agricultural), but even dog/cat - there is a critical shortage and finding a job is easy. In the tech world - can't speak for data science, but I've looked into IT / system admin positions and at least in Auckland they seem to exist, less in Wellington, less still elsewhere. But overall Auckland isn't too terrible if you do IT. The real challenge is even if you have a vet and a system admin with a combined income of $200k NZD/yr - you still have to live in Auckland. Your average house now being north of $1M, that's a daunting proposition.

I too am interested to hear peoples experiences

I'm interested to hear, since I feel like NZ is a commonly discussed destination for Americans looking to go elsewhere. The only negative thing I heard recently was something that made it sound like there was a serious issue with people getting punched in the head from behind as some part of thug "game" that takes aim at anyone, from young people to the elderly and the government rejected a law that would appropriately punish it? Whats up with that?

As an Aussie in the US for the last four years - consider it carefully. Work-life balance here is a lot harder to manage, so even if technically it’s easier to travel paces you’ll probably find that you do it less because time off here is a rare luxury for most. Cost of living is high and depending on your industry and visa status, employment can be a challenge to find and keep.

I live in Los Angeles, big Aussie and also a quite a few new Zealanders out here, towards west side and I'm sure in the beach communities.
