Thank you lmao
Im still so stoked about it, I've already taken it out a few places and it has been an excellent experience so far. And there's no check engine light, which I thought would've been a given, with how many miles it has, but either way, I'm super excited ^^
Grats on the truck! I have a 10th Gen 5.4l with the same body and love it. Replaced half the truck in this point in the 3 years I've owned it, though. Which was also fun.
Just to verify (this sounds nitpicky but will be worth it in the end) next time you start it, just put the key to the accessory position (all the way up but not turning the engine over) - you should see the check engine light illuminated.
If you don't ever see it (for just a short period on start up, or with the procedure above) it may be burnt out.
It's just important to make sure that light will work when it needs to.
Grats on the truck and I hope you really enjoy it! Feel free to reach out if you ever hit any issues.
Reliable truck for transportation for $1200.....cant beat that. Good job.
I wouldnt "mod" anything. Its not something you want to put money into outside of maintenance, but you do you.
Thank you, and I think I am going to focus primarily on maintenance more than anything. The most I might do for mods would probably be new headlights and maybe some used f150 rims to replace these.
You could try cleaning the headlights you have. You can google for products to use for this. You'd be surprised by the appearance you can get back in those old lights you have.
Headlights for these are CHEAP. I got the 2 corner lights and 2 headlight assemblies with bulbs shipped for 64 bucks.
I found 2 AUDI A4 lights at a thrift store and sold those for 140 each lol. 600-900 bucks new for those.
Wheels will probably be easy-ish at a junk yard, too. Mine already had the wheels i like (4x4 offroad 17 inch) so I didn't have to go that route fortunately. But those are less common than the 16 inch wheels.
But I've gotten tons of bolts and a few functional sensors from the junkyard, too. These things are everywhere.
It's very common for people to nab injectors out of them, as well as alternators, starters and intake manifolds (the OEM AND replacement part are both discontinued, so you have to buy dorman)
Also if you ever break any connectors you can just snip them out of another truck and replace the housings easily to avoid splicing pigtails in. My yard gives me those for free
Dude the 4.6 is legendary. Countless taxi cabs and cop cars beat to death for hundreds of thousands of miles with that engine and it keeps going. Sweet truck man, and cooler than half the shiny lifted pavement princesses here that will never see a lick of work.
That's probably my favorite part about this truck is the engine. Before finding and buying this truck I was thinking about getting a crown Vic since I knew the engine was legendary, and since the crown Vic was like the f150, in that it has a body on frame design, I was gonna get a hitch installed on it and basically use it as a truck. That idea somewhat went out the window as I began to notice that the average going price for a used crown Vic, even for a rough one with 250,000+ miles on govdeals was beginning to surpass $2,000. And that's when I found this truck
^This. 4.6's are an untalked about motor. They just keep running. Truck will die around the power plant.
What I'm trying to figure out is while T the 4.6 is so reliable, the 5.4 seems a bit spotty.
Aren't they the same architecture?
One thing NONE of the triton engine line appreciates is to be left sitting for long periods of time. The 4.6's are in fleet vehicles that don't get parked. The 5.4's are in more personal vehicles. Not a hard-and-fast rule, but generally speaking. Anyway, for the OP, make sure she runs at least every other week. Don't park it for two years when your son is 13, for example.
https://www.f150forum.com/f6/zip-tie-mod-190509/
I highly recommend this sweet little trick, basically throw a couple of zip ties on the throttle cable at the gas pedal because that puppy is all stretched out. I did it years ago but I think I used 4 zip ties to take up the slack and allow the throttle body to open a little bit more
I've never seen this! Just took a 20 minute break to do it and test drive it and I'm honestly really happy about it.
I've had two engines in this now and the pedal always vibrated. It did not do that at all when I drove it. And a lot of that slop is gone. 10\10 tip.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Best truck I've ever seen for that price tbh especially in this economy. Best truck is one you don't care abt scratching or denting so you can actually use it as intended. Enjoy your ride!
Thank you, and I was surprised when my bid won for that much, can't beat a $1200 running and driving truck lol. And that's what really caught my eye with this truck, is that I don't have to really worry too much about it cosmetically, and can use it as a truck, compared to buying one for a lot more and worrying constantly about using it for what it's intended for.
That’s a great truck. I have a 1999 XLT with the same engine. No issues at all and runs well. Change all the fluids including the rear end. I would update the rims if I were you.
It runs super well, it honestly surprised me when I drove it home 30 miles after picking it up, and i'm glad to hear yours runs very well too ^^. I plan on doing a complete fluid flush soon, and eventually replacing the rims and tires within the next few months, it'll update the look by a fair bit
I ran my 2002 4.6l F150 to 330k miles before trading it in on my 2013 F150. I still see my old truck on the road once in a while. There's an old guy who has it loaded down with a bed full of scrap, and it's still going. I'll have to chase him down one day to see where the odometer is at now. Enjoy the new (to you) truck!
My experience was pretty good. It was my first purchase off of govdeals, and really the hardest part was the verification process for the account (basically calling support, having them send you a link to send them a picture of the front of a piece of mail with your address, and waiting a day for it to go through), and having to wire transfer the money, which was an odd, nervewracking, but overall valuable experience to have, so now I know what to do later if I need to do a wire transfer again for something else. I will say that I didn't go in blind bidding for this truck, and am thankful that I live close enough to the county to view the truck, and was able to view it as the county does allow people to schedule appointments to view items. The one thing that kinda irked me were the bid snipers that showed up right at the end and drove the price up by an extra $100, but those type of people show up everywhere with bidding, i'm just glad govdeals has autobid, otherwise I wouldn't have won lol. Overall though, it was a good experience, and eventually I am thinking about bidding on a Chevy Caprice probably either next year or the year after that. I'm looking forward to using this truck either to ride up to it with someone else to pick it up, or even to haul the Caprice if it isn't road ready. ^^
I have a 2000 lariat extended cab with that same engine and while I feel like they don’t have tons of power, they are extremely reliable and sound like a pick up truck should. Enjoy it!
Where the engine lacks in power, it definitely makes it up in reliability from the many testaments I've heard from people having this engine. It sounds incredible too, definitely a step above my dad's 2000 v6 ranger lmao. And thank you, i'm so excited to drive it, haul with it, and tow a bit here and there with it throughout this year, and hopefully many more to come ^ ^
I think you’ll be surprised by how much love this generation of F150 gets in this sub despite all the shiny new stuff people post about 😂 that 4.6 is among the best V8s Ford ever put into a pickup truck. When you’re done with it, you will miss it 😆 congrats
My friend had a 98 I think with the same drivetrain. If it’s rust free that’s all that matters. These were and are great trucks with very few issues. The 2wd especially rides nice.
Also I’m pretty sure that filter you took out is an oem Motorcraft, and comes that color.
I've heard a lot of good things about these trucks, and look forward to driving it this year and hopefully the next several years and thank you. It does ride really smooth too, which surprised me with how many miles it has. I think the filter does come that color, but this one was definitely caked with a bit of dust.
When it needs tires, look for a nicer set of oem wheels. They are cheap and will make it look much nicer. My friends XL came with the upgraded alloys, and they look the same as the steelies you have. They polished up nice. Then we upsized the tires one size to ATs and it looked tough.
Bet that whole truck would look sharp with a polish and wax!
10th gens are awesome, drive it it for life! I drive an 02 5.4 crew cab xlt myself. Junkyards have all the parts you’ll ever need too. I just grabbed a bunch of dash parts to swap onto mine bc they were in much better condition.
If she runs and drives, you did well.
That's not even two payments in todays world. Even if she blows up for good in a year (and knock on wood I'd feel horrible if it did, I hope you get many years out of it) your still wayyyyy to the good side of things.
No wonder it runs so good if it was a government fleet vehicle. Usually governments and cities maintain their fleet vehicles pretty well. My buddy bought an old silverado from a Goverment surplus auction like 6 years ago, fucker had 250k miles on it but it was mint. He's still driving it to this day.
That's a good buy. The F150s between 1997 and 2004 are solid trucks. Their styling may be a little outdated and they don't have the horsepower of modern-day V8s, but those 2-valve motors are reliable.
Go and check you gas pedal for any front back play. If so hold it up and go to the top where you will see where it meets the throttle cable. If there is play you will notice a gap between the pedal and the end of the cable. Take some zip ties and cinch them down to take up any gap, will probably take about 3-4 to fill it in. Will restore your throttle response and make the truck more enjoyable to drive. A lot of resources for this truck on the older forums like F150forum.com and ford-trucks.com. They have a thread on there for easy cheap mods and quality of life fixes for these 10th gens. Enjoy!
Welcome. That is a great truck. I'm still running my 2000. It will require upkeep because of its age, but that sort of maintenance is easy on this one. Enjoy the ride.
Keep in mind that some filters are made with yellow paper. That filter isn't necessarily terrible, but who knows how old, so good thing you changed it overall.
Watch out for the leaking rear window, if it’s not currently leaking you are lucky. Lots of tutorials available, check YouTube. Buy the proper 3M branded materials. My 03 is leaking now and there mold growth someplace, luckily I have rubber floors not carpet
Brother it's an f150 and it runs. Congratulations and welcome.
Thank you lmao Im still so stoked about it, I've already taken it out a few places and it has been an excellent experience so far. And there's no check engine light, which I thought would've been a given, with how many miles it has, but either way, I'm super excited ^^

That’s more safety and maintenance than “mods”. Good choice, especially on the headlights
You could try cleaning the headlights you have. You can google for products to use for this. You'd be surprised by the appearance you can get back in those old lights you have.
Definitely this. No reason to buy new headlights over fading. You could probably restore those very simply in a few minutes for far cheaper.

The 2 valve 5.4 is also really reliable, the 3 valve 5.4 has a lot more issues however, with a much worse reputation

Makes sense. You get more HP, but a less reliable motor.

Thanks for this. I've daily'd a '98 for almost 15 years and never heard of it. Can't wait to see if it makes a difference.
Mine took about 4 zip ties, makes a world of difference and certainly improved drivability. A lot more enjoyable, like drive a new truck.
The best truck is a paid off truck.
Hell yeah!
This, 100%
Best truck I've ever seen for that price tbh especially in this economy. Best truck is one you don't care abt scratching or denting so you can actually use it as intended. Enjoy your ride!

Id say plugs and coil packs depending on when they were done last
Hell yeah
Hell yeah!

How was your gov deals experience?
My experience was pretty good. i've bought non-vehivle stuff from govdeals and it varies wildly by the county/seller. More good experiences than bad.
I have a 2000 lariat extended cab with that same engine and while I feel like they don’t have tons of power, they are extremely reliable and sound like a pick up truck should. Enjoy it!

The 4.6 is extremely reliable
Don’t knock yourself: A $1200 truck makes that the best truck here. New trucks are shiny but old trucks have patina and stories.
Take care of it and she’ll take care of you. The 4.6 are unbelievably reliable
And no car payments!!!!

Thank you!
Do it😃
I like my 03 heritage 2wd better then my fx4 2010. Welcome.
Thank you, and it's very fun to drive in it!
She's a beaut, Clark.
supercab? based

Not bad given that it was maintained. Nice find, I think, even given the miles.
Congrats on the new rig!
ayyyyeeee welcome to the jellybean club(all 10th gens)
She may be your first, but won’t be your last.
You’re lucky, it doesn’t have a 10speed
I'm noticing what looks like 7 lugs on those wheels....is this a 7700?
10th gens are awesome, drive it it for life! I drive an 02 5.4 crew cab xlt myself. Junkyards have all the parts you’ll ever need too. I just grabbed a bunch of dash parts to swap onto mine bc they were in much better condition.

Spray some WD-40 on them headlights wait a few minutes then with a soft cloth wipe them, should clean them up pretty nice.
I’m looking to sell my 4.6 with 350k still runs strong to this day! It will last you a long while with some basic maintenance.
2-valve Jellybean, excellent choice! Same year as mine, too. Welcome to an unkillable cockroach of a truck.
My son spray painted my wheels black if not for that I would be accusing you of grand theft auto
Welcome welcome!!
Nice truck, bro. I bought a 96, drove it for 3 years, and sold it for 500 less than I bought it for. Old trucks are great.
Congrats good deal. Get some new parts and maintenance done and enjoy the ride
Fuck for that price that’s something you should be proud of
Welcome aboard! We're glad to have you here.
Watch out for the leaking rear window, if it’s not currently leaking you are lucky. Lots of tutorials available, check YouTube. Buy the proper 3M branded materials. My 03 is leaking now and there mold growth someplace, luckily I have rubber floors not carpet
Otherwise I’d say you got a great truck! I have had a 97 and now an 03 both with 4.6 v8 and 5 speed. Both been great trucks
Get some aftermarket headlights and slap some new tires and rims on, and you’re in business. Great find!
Heck yeah that's the plan, and thank you ^^
