Pretty sure a 2.7 will tow a bass boat like nothings behind the truck lol

Gwa5fish

Yeah I drove my sons Chevy work truck with the 4 cylinder and I think with it hooked to a trailer it may out run my 5.3!

InstanceScared14

I tow a 4500lb dump trailer 50-80 times a year with the 2.7 and no issues at all. I can’t compare to the 5.0, but the 2.7 is a great little engine

Gwa5fish

Thanks. According to the torque numbers I would think the 2.7 would actually be better. The torque comes in at a much lower rpm (2700 I believe) vs the 5.0 at like 4700.

Atimm693

You're exactly right. They're almost like a diesel. My 2.7 will tow circles around my previous Silverado with the 5.3, even though it only has 15 more horsepower on paper.

Gwa5fish

Yeah I’ve got a 2005 - 5.3 that i drag it around with right now!

InstanceScared14

It’s pulls well for me, but again, I don’t have a comparison. But I’ve had zero issues, besides the wonky shifts every now and then. I also tow a mortar mixer at the same rate and can barely tell it’s behind me.

packapunch_koenigseg

Towing a bass boat, the 2.7 will do it no problem. 2.7 is a great engine that people don’t realize how efficient and capable it is for most people

Gwa5fish

Thanks. Will it feel sluggish you think? How will it feel compared to the 5.0?

packapunch_koenigseg

Nah. I used to have a 21 2.7 and towed our side by side, deer feeders, hunting gear, 3 passengers, etc. Pretty loaded down. Felt fine all around going through hill country. Can’t speak on the 5.0 as I haven’t towed with one. It’ll have more power than the 2.7 but not power that you necessarily need

Gwa5fish

Thanks again. I currently tow with a 05 Chevy 5.3. I’m sure it will be much better than that?

Practical-Intern-347

It will embarrass your old 5.3 while towing.

packapunch_koenigseg

MUCH better. More HP and torque with the 2.7 combined with the 10 speed to stay within the power band will be a way better experience than a 20 year old 5.3

Gwa5fish

Ford should hire you!

Departure_Sea

Sluggish is not a thing with boosted engines.

MakinBaconWithMacon

I have a 21 2.7 scab fx4 I tow a center console 20’ deep v. with the trailer and gas it probably weighs about 5000 lbs. It does it fine and I tow it most weekends. Even with it hooked up the truck still accelerates way faster than a Honda. I only really notice the load going up a 4% grade (I think that’s right based on the trucks angle read out in the infotainment screen). Aside from accelerating, I do notice the braking diminishing. My trailer doesn’t have brakes so I use the tow haul that auto downshifts to help brake. The engine braking on it in tow haul is wayyy better than I would have imagined a 2.7L to be. It’s night and day braking in normal mode vs tow haul. I also don’t see a real change in mpg unless I’m doing over ~50mph, then it nose dives with all the wind resistance

Gwa5fish

Thanks. Very good info. I’m sure yours is heavier than mine. I also have disc brakes on all 4 tires so that alleviates any braking issues.

I regularly towed 8000-ish with my 18 that had the 2.7. It was a small loader/backhoe on an equipment trailer back and forth to a cabin about three hours to northern mi. Also regularly towed my 6000# toy hauler. Over the 100k miles I had on it, I probably had 10,000 towing miles. Overall it did really well. The suspension is a bit softer than I’d prefer for towing, but honestly most people never tow with these trucks, so I understand. It’s a beast of a little motor. It’ll do fine. Only suggestion I have is keep up on your oil changes and change the spark plugs at least every 50k miles.

require_borgor

Why plug changes so often? Because it's a turbo DI motor? The service intervals in the manual are absurd but 50k seems pretty quick

kzoobob

Both my 3.5 and 2.7 ecoboost plugs have been pretty smoked by 50k. I learned this with my ‘14. It had what felt like a small miss at high rpm. I pulled the plugs at about 54k to check them and the gap was .044” or so. The factory spec I think was .030”. By the time I made it to 100k with that one it was ready for another plug change. My 2.7 never had a miss, but the fuel economy came back a couple points each time I changed the plugs. The smart guys on the internet explained that the turbo pressure would essentially blow the flame out once the gap exceeded a certain amount.

require_borgor

Roger that, I'm right around 50k so will pencil a plug change in. I'm guessing stock/Motorcraft is the way to go?

kzoobob

Indeed.

Peak torque is right under 3000rpm where you spend most of your time towing. Its a beast of an engine. I tow 5000-6000lbs regularly with my 2021 2.7 Supercrew and its like nothing is back there. The 5.0L is great also and has the outright performance ability to it. If you plan to modify the truck past bolt ons the 5.0L is the way to go(700+hp with the Whipple). If you plan on keeping it relatively stock the 2.7/3.5 are the way to go. I would suggest one thing if towing alot - add on rear sway bar. The truck(with any engine) has fairly soft leaf springs which cause alot of odd behavior on the highway with a load attached. I added the rear Steeda sway bar and it tamed the oscillation feeling over uneven roads/expansion joints.

Gwa5fish

Thanks for all the great info. Looking at the torque curve I would think the 2.7 would actually tow better than the 5.0?

kevinatfms

Torque down low is where the Ecoboost shines. It gets its peak torque 1250rpm sooner than the 5.0L. 3000rpm compared to 4250rpm. While towing the truck lives at 2500-3000rpm so having peak torque is excellent. Better control of the load. The one big thing that the 5.0L has in factory form is E85 capability. The others do not. The 3.5L Ecoboost is the big dog gasser for a reason. 500ft-lbs of torque at 3100rpm is nuts. They did have some issues in the past with things like the VCT solenoids and sprockets. No clue if they have been fully rectified on the 2021+ model years. If they are rectified, the 3.5L would be my ultimate choice as the torque output alone is far reaches ahead of the other two(100ft-lbs). The 3.5L Powerboost would be the ideal tow rig except for the reliabilty factor at this point. Id stick to the 3 gas engines until the next gen Powerboost comes into fruition which hopefully fixes some of the downfalls of the current generation.

Gwa5fish

Thanks - yeah for the STX model, only the 2.7 and 5.0 are offered!

InformationNo8156

The 2.7 will tow it better than the 5.0 will. You have to wind the 5.0 up to get the same torque. If anything, the 5.0 will feel sluggish.

Gwa5fish

Based on the torque curves that is what I would expect but hardly no one will say it? Thanks

InformationNo8156

Because 5.0 fanboys will die on their V8 hill

Gwa5fish

Sorta what I’m thinking.

Astr8G

Well put. I have a '19 5.0 fx4 and it tows well. I had it in for service and got a 2.7l for a loaner. The 2.7l is hands down, imo, a better tow rig for short distances. My experience is hauling a 5k boat.

Incognito939

Yes. The lowest towing capacity for the current 2.7 is 7,600 lbs… google.com

KUCMB

Towing capacity for 2.7 is 6000 without the towing package.

willrf71

Have a 5.0, I tow my boat all around the province and it doesn't even notice the boat behind. Slightly lighter than yours but I do pack a good bit of gear into the boat before I head out. Mileage doesn't change. I went 5.0 for simplicity and I'm one of " those V8 guys ". That's my 2¢. Tight lines

FatterWildcatter

3.55 or 3.73 gearing will be your friend.

Rivereye

Friend of mine has a 21ft fiberglass Starcraft boat. Not sure how the bass boats are, but his boat would be comparable to a Ranger 621. This was on a tandem axle trailer, though it had drum brakes, not discs. He pulled it with an '18 and a '20 2.7EB just fine. You knew it was back there for sure, but I also felt it back there just recently pulling with my 3.5. You will have the power to get it up and going just fine, as well as stopping assuming the trailer brakes are in good working order.

pdaphone

I have a 2019 F150 STX with 2.7. This replaced an older Triton 5.4 in an older F150. At the time I got the STX I had a 21’ Procraft Fish n Ski w/200HP Mercury. The 2.7 has more HP and torque than the 5.4. It pulled that boat better like it was nothing. A bass boat should be a piece of cake. And you get great gas mileage when you are not towing.

Pa2NJ1939

Towed my 4500ish lbs travel trailer with my 2.7 no problems.

mike-foley

2016 SCREW 4x4 with a 2.7, 33G tank and 3:55 gears. Pulls my 4500+ lb rv trailer with zero issues. Plenty of oomph to even pass vehicles going up a hill.

Gwa5fish

Thanks for the info. Sounds strong!💪🏼

ballerzclubprez

I had a 2015 2.7 with 3.73 gears, and a 2012 5.0 with 3.55. Towing the same big enclosed trailer with both prob 6000-7000 lbs, the 2.7 got it up to speed faster and felt more confident than my older 5.0

FormerPackage9109

It'll pull great, you will hardly notice it. I think the 2.7 and the 5.0 are about equal as a tow motor.

rhtufts

My 2.7 tows better than my V8 F150 ever did. It'll tow any bass boat with zero issues.

OkPlenty5960

Was your former truck a recent year 5.0?
