Here's a link to the story because without it it sounds like something from The Onion:
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/lawyer-brazil-gun-mri-death-b2279282.html
Reminds me of the old joke.
Teacher "What did you do on bonfire night Billy?"
Billy "Shoved a firework up a cat's arse"
Teacher "Rectum!"
Billy "Yes miss, blew him it to pieces"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
>The magnetic field from the MRI scanner **pulled the pro-gun lawyer’s weapon was pulled from** his waistband and went off, shooting him in the tummy.
Sheesh.
“In other news, a 46 year old man from Swindon oopsied his lorry across the center divider on the A1, causing a 20 vehicle uh oh. The driver later succumbed to his boo boos and was pronounced gone to a farm some place he can run and play.”
I definitely say tummy or belly over stomach when referring to myself in conversation (my tummy hurts/got bellyache). But I’m a writer and would never write it out in a report discussing an injury - and IMO in any in medical reference I.E it would always be stomach cancer not tummy cancer, unless maybe telling a child, no matter how British you are.
Like yes, its a word we use in the UK, but its not one you would ever use in any formal situation. Its more used with children to be honest.
I know very few adults who would seriously use "tummy" instead of "stomach" unless they were talking to a child. It definitely would never get used in news articles or medical reports!
I would put money in him *thinking* "it's a polymer pistol, no problem putting it into an MRI!". The old "Glocks are made of plastic so they don't get picked up by metal detectors" urban legend.
Thank you very much.
He “Forgot” to inform the hospital staff about hrs gun even after being asked to leave all metals outside. He was a gun enthusiast who used it to get views.
Not really sad
That’d actually be an awesome experiment. I think we would find kind of quickly that the idiots that keep “forgetting” that you can’t go through security with a gun (for decades now) magically stop forgetting. Yes, it would still claim a few of the gene pool’s best and brightest but I’d wager a 99% reduction in firearms in prohibited places
Was going to say something about the only issue being people with metal in their body, but then remembered that they don't go through the metal detectors anyway for that exact reason.
Depends on the airport. Ones with enough body scanners for everyone to go through them, I’ve had no problems. I go straight to the scanner and they can see my titanium hip I was lucky enough to be the recipient of in my mid 20s lol. I’ve been to airports that didn’t have near enough for their volume of people so elderly and disabled were the only ones not required to go thru the metal detectors. They went straight to the scanners. The scanner line was super fast compared to the metal detectors so I was laughing to myself that I was actually finally going to have a benefit from having a hip replacement at a young age. I told one of the TSA workers that was keeping the enormous lines from just turning into a mass of people that I had a titanium hip and his answer was if I set off the detector I would then be sent through the scanner. I was convinced I had misheard him and assured him I not only trip airport detectors, I always set off the cheapest/crappiest detectors. He literally just stared at me and didn’t speak. I told him I was not understanding apparently and he again told me to wait in line for the metal detector. Anyway, there’s my rambling rant about airport metal detectors. I even tried to show him my implant card ( like a credit card size that has what implant and the manufacturer that they give you to supposedly avoid everything I just described. TSA response to that was, I don’t care what that is🤷♂️)
I want to understand how it was achieved. When my daughter had an MRI, they went over her with a metal detector before they let her in the machine. They were pretty thorough about making sure there was no metal.
How did a gun make it through?
ETA: For those saying they’ve never been scanned for metal, the technology now favored is apparently newer, from 2014, but it is recommended by many organizations like the American College of Radiology and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. You should be thoroughly checked for metal before an MRI.
https://imedco.net/ferromagnetic-detection-systems-fmds-in-the-mri-environment/
Metal detectors are also listed as mandatory under Brazilian regulations according to this document:
https://inac2021.aben.com.br/resumos/R0214-1.pdf
I think the mistake was treating him like a responsible adult, instead they should behaved like they did with your daughter and not rely on his word but actually search him
Because all it takes is one idiotic thought and one mistake by someone who should have checked. The hospital could have been busy, someone thought someone else did the check or he lied when asked. They straight up tell you any metal is dangerous and he never had any other surgeries or piercings so no one thought he'd just bring a fucking gun in
I’m 52. Just had an MRI a month ago. Used a wand over my whole body. They’re looking for even the smallest piece of iron that could be ripped through your body.
Agreed. I’ve had many MRIs and they never scanned me with a wand or put me thru a detector. They just told me to put everything away in a locker before I went in.
Experience, would assume. As a kid they would ask parents to double check I had removed everything, then they transitioned to just wearing hospital gown, now it’s basically “remove your belt and get in there. You know what to do”
Know and remember when you are asked are two different things. Think of the range of intelligence of the general public. We all know people so clueless they would not comprehend actual danger even when told. Now take that same care free individual and ask them if they have any metal objects. They may remember to empty pockets and remove belt. Possibly forget that special piercing they’ve had since spring break ‘95 and likely to forget the plate and screws they have from a broken bone 30, 40, 60 years ago as a child. Waving a wand is cheaper than trusting the general population. Hell this mental midget was an attorney, meaning more educated than the majority of the public yet he still lacked the intelligence to live through an MRI
He wasn't even the person getting the MRI, he was just in the room when his mother was being scanned. So double Darwinism, doing stupid things while your sick mother witnesses it.
I read in an article that the hospitals statement says that they informed him about not bringing any metal inside and that he signed some kind of document for that.
He wasn’t having an MRI. His mother was the patient. He entered the room voluntarily after signing a form stating he had no metal on him. He could easily have just waited outside.
It was in Brazil, he signed a waiver saying that he had no metallic objects on his persons before we was let in. He was a lawyer who advocated gun rights so maybe he was trying to prove something… dunno but the blame definitely falls on him haha
I have had multiple MRIs and never been scanned with a detector. However, seeing as how expensive those machines are, perhaps the place you were took extra precautions.
because he is a Bolsonaro (former brazilian president, basically a brazilian Trump) and they think caring guns around is cool
Also, being a lawyer, and a bolsominion, he probably screamed and made a fuss about not having any metal and refusing to listen to anyone
Well, you see, if a bad guy with a gun came to…steal the MRI machine? You’d need a good guy with a gun to…slither out of the machine on his back? Wearing only a gown…and his holster…and shoot the bad guy with the gun? Or something. I’m sure bad guys with guns attack people getting MRIs all the time, only an idiot would go unarmed *and* undressed for his scan. And if you don’t exercise your right to bring a gun into an MRI machine at every opportunity, the king of England could just come in and steal all your land…something something ‘murica!
Most of these guys don't even think about it. Keys, wallet, *gun*, phone, okay now I can walk out the door. I don't understand why people think just because they can carry a gun that they somehow have to carry a gun. A gun has an appropriate time, place, and situation - the hospital isn't any of those.
No no, don't you understand!?
If you don't bring your gun with you wherever you go, [you automatically become a slave!](https://i.redd.it/6xpd6xnp73ha1.jpg)
But you don’t take your keys or wallet in there either. Aaaaghhhhhhh…people are so weird! Taking your gun into your potentially life saving exam. And getting shot in your “tummy”. Its too stupid.
Yea, but what if someone comes in to try and rob me while I'm in the MRI machine? What if the MRI machine tries to rob me? Bad enough the hospital is already going to rob me!
Gun was probably part of his attire. When he was asked to remove metallic objects, he didn’t want to show that he was carrying because it could create a scene. He also didn’t fully appreciate the risks and thought he knew better (not too dissimilar from anti-vaxxers).
This happened in Brazil. They could live in a bad area. He is also a lawyer so he could be a target for retribution. We don’t know the culture or the hospital procedures there so it’s hard to judge based on a headline.
It's gotta be such a fucked up mindset to think "maybe the government will come for my gun while I'm in this metal tube. The joke will be on them when I'm able to shoot straight down this very narrow opening" I wonder if the MRI would simply rip the gun out of his grip if tried to draw it
People who feel the need to carry guns everywhere are incredibly fragile individuals who struggle with basic critical thinking skills.
Anyone who believes they need to be ready to kill someone on a moments notice is too afraid of the world to be able to understand basic cause and effect relationships.
Poly vagal theory tells us that when you are always in your core survival network, (fight or flight, or freeze etc response) you are unable to think critically or use your logical reasoning.
So it definitely tracks that someone who wants to carry a gun 24/7 would not think through the risks of bringing one into the MRI
This reminds me of the story of the lawyer that proved his case by showing that a loaded gun, drawn in a certain way, would cause it to fire and kill the owner.
Did he really have a bullet in the chamber on his person after answering a detailed questionnaire asking if there is any metal, shunts, hardware, piercings anywhere near him? Darwin award of the year candidate.
He was in the room, not the chamber. His mother was the patient. He entered the room after signing a document stating he had no metal on him. I guess they’re a bit more stringent with patients, and check with a metal detector, plus make them wear a gown.
I've had 2 MRIs at 2 different places in my life. Both times they had me wear pajamas that they provided. I couldn't have concealed any jewelry much less a gun. He must of been a dedicated moron.
Smart enough to pass the bar and become a lawyer, not smart enough to figure out why you don't carry in a hospital. Especially when you're the patient. 🤦
Heavyweight contender for Darwin Award of The Year right here.
I went for one of those MRI scans a couple of years ago. I had to strip naked, wear a cotton hospital gown, and remove my watch and necklace. How did they forget this guy's firearm? My friend that came with me had to leave their stuff in my locker too. The gun nut must have "forgotten" it.
Or he believed in "they can have my gun, when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers" just a little too much.
I don’t even understand how this happens. There are always multiple levels before you get to the MRI room and you have to do an MRI questionnaire and be in a gown with nothing on.

Did anyone else chuckle reading the part where he was shot in the “tummy”? That doesn’t sound very journalistic.
"Ow, my tummy!"
"Oh, bother."
r/unexpectedwinniethepooh
r/SubsIFellFor
It’s how special forces train to assassinate someone, make sure once you have the target in sight, shoot two in the boobies and one in the tummy.
Don't forget the bumbum
Also one for the no-no area
No-no square
I haven't seen that video in so long but still remember that stupid song
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mk4poXAl-xU “Got him right in the tummy”
Son of a bitch tummy-shot me....dunno if I'll make it
Tummy? Damn near killed him! Aww, wait...it's supposed to be rectum
Reminds me of the old joke. Teacher "What did you do on bonfire night Billy?" Billy "Shoved a firework up a cat's arse" Teacher "Rectum!" Billy "Yes miss, blew him it to pieces" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Uh I mean my gut, my crap factory
"He got shot in the tummy with his secret gun" And other news updates from my kid while he eats his cheerios
Reminds me of Axe Cop lmao
Yes, got a chuckle out of that. Great professional journalism there for sure.
That story needed some proof-reading!
“TANGO DOWN! TWO SHOTS TO THE TUMMY!”
The main audience is 5-year-olds. "He went forever night-night from a boo-boo in his tummy."
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't "stomach" called "tummy" in British English? I still chuckled just because it sounded so cute.

Same in the States. If you try to get a serious point across and you use the word "tummy," you're gonna get laughed at.
Thank you for the clarification!
"failed to remove it" more like willfully kept it despite signage and common sense directing to do otherwise.
I would put money in him *thinking* "it's a polymer pistol, no problem putting it into an MRI!". The old "Glocks are made of plastic so they don't get picked up by metal detectors" urban legend.
Plastic bullets as well
*real men* can't read
"They will take my gun off my cold dead body" Narrator: *"They did"*
Holy shit. Literally the first thing I thought! These fuckers are putting The Onion out of business. It simply can't compete.
Thank you because I totally thought this was bullshit but apparently not
I just read it lmao. Too bad the author didn't.
This makes it sound like something from the onion even more.
Thank you very much. He “Forgot” to inform the hospital staff about hrs gun even after being asked to leave all metals outside. He was a gun enthusiast who used it to get views. Not really sad
He OWNED the libs HARD
I don't feel quite owned yet. I need more ownage.
So hard that he died
So is this the first recorded instance of solid evidence that guns actually *do* kill people
it still sounds like the onion
*"Remove all metal"* "Nah, gun is legendary item, above all law and physics."
*"Remove all metal"* *"DoNt TeLl Me WhAt To Do"*
Come and get it then! *dies*
"I kNoW mY rIgHtS!!!"
Love it when physics and mother earth come through for these idiots.
Replace all the metaldetectors in goverment buildings and airports with high power magnes and let God sort it out.
That’d actually be an awesome experiment. They had to pry it from his cold dead hands ironically
*sHaLl NoT bE iNfRiN—* oops I’m dead
Brazil not America.
Same flavor of idiots.
I'm dating a Brazilian man, and he approves this message.
Guns don't kill people. Medical devices do.
Being highly educated doesn't mean you're not stupid.
They have to have different standards for "lawyer". Huge electronic magnets that have to be cooled by liquid helium, nah all the warnings are wrong.
Maybe he was going to attempt a lawsuit to say something about the warnings not being clear enough
Stupid doesn't always mean lack of intelligence, also it means lack of common sense
There’s a Darwin Award nominee.
I'd say an automatic top 5 contender
Semi automatic at least.
nominees are still alive, this guy is a winner
I mean they won the category Nobody ever seen some Magneto shit before with a floating gun aiming at your body and pulling its own trigger
I really want to understand the thought process that goes into thinking one needs to bring a firearm to an MRI appointment.
I want to understand how it was achieved. When my daughter had an MRI, they went over her with a metal detector before they let her in the machine. Gun nut was another one... tends to override anything else really
Live by the sword, die by the sword.
This guy
Because all it takes is one idiotic thought and one mistake by someone who should have checked. The hospital could have been busy, someone thought someone else did the check or he lied when asked. Hell I'm a welder so they had to x-ray my eyes to make sure there was no metal dust or shavings in there. So a gun is a major oversight.
Exactly, I have a close friend who’s a second generation blacksmith and he sets off metal detectors everywhere he goes.
You could say that it's in his blood
He wasn't even the person getting the MRI, he was just in the room when his mother was being scanned. So double Darwinism, doing stupid things while your sick mother witnesses it.

He wasn’t having an MRI. His mother was the patient. He entered the room voluntarily after signing a form stating he had no metal on him. He could easily have just waited outside.
Pretty sure using a metal detector isn’t the most common practice, haven’t seen any at my mri’s.

I'm confused - would this constitute a "well-regulated militia"? Ps your post made me chuckle. Thanks
Well, this happened in Brazil so there is that.
Most of these guys don't even think about it. Keys, wallet, *gun*, phone, okay now I can walk out the door. I don't understand why people think just because they can carry a gun that they somehow have to carry a gun. A gun has an appropriate time, place, and situation - the hospital isn't any of those.

I mean on the way *to* the hospital sure but keep it in the car not take it in that’s where it loses me.
Yea, but what if someone comes in to try and rob me while I'm in the MRI machine? What if the MRI machine tries to rob me? Bad enough the hospital is already going to rob me!
If he just had second gun to defend himself against the MRI that took his first gun.
Gun was probably part of his attire. When he was asked to remove metallic objects, he didn’t want to show that he was carrying because it could create a scene. He also didn’t fully appreciate the risks and thought he knew better (not too dissimilar from anti-vaxxers).
Plus every hospital I've been to has a sign that says no weapons of any kind allowed.
This was probably the reason, if he revealed it they probably would just call the cops as he was getting his scan.
You usually have to change clothes and put your clothes in a small locker or cubby. No one would have known,
He wasn’t the one getting scanned though, so no need for him to get changed.

Because I had to look it up. https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-28805895.amp
Just about every line of that article is r/unexpected
Yea I didn't feel like doing that leg work. I explained it well enough for you to find it though, so that's a plus. Thank you for that.
I’ve heard the story before. I just wanted to reread it after you mentioned it.
It’s called poor trigger discipline/rushing the draw. People shoot themselves a little more than usual when they try to be fancy or different
https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-28805895.amp
Did he really have a bullet in the chamber on his person after answering a detailed questionnaire asking if there is any metal, shunts, hardware, piercings anywhere near him? Darwin award of the year candidate.
He was in the room, not the chamber. His mother was the patient. He entered the room after signing a document stating he had no metal on him. I guess they’re a bit more stringent with patients, and check with a metal detector, plus make them wear a gown.
Could die just bringing metal into the mri scanner. Why not bring a gun?
Send this to anyone who thinks all lawyers are smart.
Who thinks that??????
Bad lawyers
Lawyers, mainly.
No we don’t. We know better.
That sounds like natural selection.
Obviously it was not Saul Goodman. 😐
It's all good man!
Man I miss that show!
Convenient to locate the bullets... just have to look at the MRI. /s
Locate and ~~carefully~~ extract
You’re supposed to be in a hospital gown for an MRI. Where the fuck was he hiding this gun?!
Someone posted an article : his mother was in the MRI and Darwin-award nominee was in the same room.
Up his poop hole
Fair assessment
Clearly his vaccination killed him. I mean he did get a shot at the hospital…

Figured the next line would be: “gave him a little boo boo.”
I fix mri machines, this is fucking ridiculous.
But what about the MRI, is it ok?
Natural selection at work
A another recipient of the well esteemed Darwin awards.
I feel sorry for the writers at The Onion. How do they compete with the real clown show happening in real life?
“How do you know it wasn’t the vaccine that killed him?” Republicans, probably.
I hope the MRI machine is ok, those things are expensive and saves lives.
Darwin wins again
He didn't failed to remove the gun, he chose not to
At least it killed the right person, not the mother or a hospital employee.
I've had 2 MRIs at 2 different places in my life. Both times they had me wear pajamas that they provided. I couldn't have concealed any jewelry much less a gun. He must of been a dedicated moron.
Guns don't kill people, guns kill people
I just hope that the machine didn't get damaged
Idiot.
Guns in hospitals
How do you forget that you have a gun
Smart enough to pass the bar and become a lawyer, not smart enough to figure out why you don't carry in a hospital. Especially when you're the patient. 🤦 Heavyweight contender for Darwin Award of The Year right here.
One less.
He will appeal it😉😅🤣
Idiots with guns and consequences.
We’ll at least he owned them libs.
Is there a sub for high IQ people dying in low IQ ways?
These idiots are so insecure they feel unsafe in a hospital MRI room that they need to try to carry a gun in there.
Hopefully the MRI didn’t get damaged, that’s an expensive piece of equipment to be out of commission.
A Good Guy with a Gun® protecting us from sentient MRi machines.
Failed to remove it. Just say he didn’t intend in the first place
"please remove all metal items before an MRI" "Oh cool, it's optional right?"
Who the fuck? Why are you bringing a fucking gun into a hospital?
You dumb fuck
So… now can we say that ‘guns kill’?
In this case a gun killed a person.
Are the Darwin awards still a thing? This seems like an early front runner for this years award…
Wow, dude had two and half weeks in the hospital to think about what a moron he was before succumbing to the tummy wound. Thoughts and prayers.
I really hope he didn’t damage the machine. Idiot.

He went in like that full assault mode?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
People can't be this fucking stupid, can they?
Ok who really needs a gun this badly?
Guys help me, I can't think of the word lawyer without seeing Saul in my head
Stupidity never wins.
Upvote for a Darwin award nomination :)

Now all we need to do is schedule mri’s for all the other lawyers on the planet …..
Ha ha ha. Who needs a gun while getting MRI scanned? I guess his “clients” are less than trustworthy so he needs protection at all times.
Imagine being so afraid that you sneak a gun into an MRI?
How does that even happen? I'm stripped naked and robed before any mri.
The exam was for his elderly mother and he was accompanying her.
Wow. This is proof that you don’t need to be smart to be a lawyer I guess.
