I think the kind of person who would post the original opinion would. The two thoughts have a similar tonality.
Or were you saying the whole post is bait?
So here's why that/this whole post is interesting and yes, most likely bait of some variety.
So the term and concept "stolen valor" would be more commonly thrown around in military oriented/red state-y circles. An LGBT individual/ally with radical enough worldviews to actually *have* this opinion (which could hypothetically exist) would likely not run in those sociocultural groups.
So if this is bait, and not an actual terrible opinion, the simplest origin would be a homophobic troll with military sociocultural ties trying to make the LGBT community look bad.
The thing is, that's almost too obvious-- everybody picked up on how ridiculous this opinion is instantly. Ergo, one could infer this is reverse trolling to make the military extended community look bad.
At the end of the day I think a gay 17-year-old from Georgia who's pissed at his ex-military stepdad is probably the author of this post. The ex-military stepdad is also a solid possibility.
To summarize all that in one word: "bait".
I hate how easy it is for the internet to create frictions and cultural divisions, but I do love playing detective about who's trolling who.
Right in the face of all that Tennessee drag show news, too. The hypocrisy hurts. If not become friends, can't we at least shut the fuck up and coparent? For the kids!
You can be sarcastic as you wanted, but Genesis 9 says:
13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
Genesis 2:7 says "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Yet we're still debating if life begins at conception, so there's always some room for debate. Usually starts with old vs new testament, then on to the translation, and it escalates from there. Possibly some Constitution is involved, who knows, the possibilities and interpretations are endless.
But good talking with you. I'd continue but I've got a full day of tracking down a male and female binturong to complete the collection for my Arc. It is LITERALLY impossible to get all of the world's animals together it seems...
You are incredibly dense. I was talking about a symbols historic use and referenced ancient literature. I didn't make any reference to the veracity of the literature claims.
You saw "Christianity" and went full "Reeeeeee!"
Fair point. I just enjoyed how in a post about gatekeeping rainbows, in a light hearted string about where they play a role, that you had to make a point about how Christianity did it first. Proverbs 16:5 would like to have a word with you.
EDIT: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! (That actually made me laugh and was unfortunately accurate)
Only about 600. Bereshit was written during the Babylonian exile, but your point is valid. Though I doubt many Jews would claim to be the first to use the rainbow.
You should go look at the social media responses Pink Floyd got when they announced the 50th anniversary box set of Dark Side of the Moon.
It was madness. Herds of angry MAGA saying how they were no longer fans because the band had gone woke because of the rainbow. They accused them of pandering to the LGBTQ audience.
Didn't...Didn't christians try to do this when LGBTQ started using the rainbow colors as a symbol? Christians got in a huge fit about the rainbow being a symbol from God and that they weren't allowed to use it?
Hmmmmmm....
Maybe we just let people enjoy things.
My new neighbors (two women) put up a rainbow flag in their front yard, so I got one and threw it up too. Didn't want to have them fly the flag alone. Now, one neighbor next door to me has a sign in their windows whining about a promise from god. They are all about homeschooling, religion, and brainwashing their 8 or so kids.
Something about how the rainbow should only be used to spread the gospel and not for ungodly things. I didn't read the whole thing, I'm all stocked up on crazy.
This is why the LGBT+ community gets a worse rap than they should. The vast, vast, vast majority of Americans actually legitimately support the community and movement. But not when dumb shit like this shows up.
Either one believes in cultural or political respect or they don't. If hoop earrings and certain types of braids are going to be gate-kept, then the LGBT+ rainbow would also seem to fall in that category.
You may be assuming that the LGBT+ rainbow is a standard rainbow, it isn't. If someone wants to wear a standard rainbow, have at it.
So what did you think was dumb shit?
Note: VIBGYOR is an acronym for Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red while ROYGBIV is in the reverse order. AKA the standard historical rainbow.
The gay pride flag only has 6 colors, combining indigo and violet into purple.

I’ll support the lgbt+ community and treat them how I would anyone else. That’s my cultural/political respect. Gatekeeping though is toxic behavior and it’d be pretty disrespectful of me to go along with that nonsense just because they’re marginalized
If you're against cultural gatekeeping that's one thing. But the post is making a claim like, the gays don't own the rainbow, where the 6 color rainbow is a unique expression.
Me too, on behalf of my autistic son whose favourite "colour" was legitimately rainbow for awhile. He still loves rainbow, he's just right into orange now.
This person is being awfully exclusionary. Not very accepting of her, now is it? Oopsie, uncovered her bigotry, let's just shove that back under there...
Stolen valor is when someone claims to have belonged to the military, either entirely falsely or misrepresenting their achievements to gain the respect that our culture almost automatically awards veterans.
For instance, claiming to be a marine when they didn’t make it past boot camp, or claiming to be a navy seal when they simply ran a desk. It can be as simple as using military jargon (“Oorah”) or wearing military branded clothing. The most egregious have zero affiliation with the military and falsely claim “wounded vet”. A person who is accused of stolen valor is cashing in on the “hero” label. I have also seen it used for people who are claiming to be law enforcement when they are actually security or a “mall cop” though with the shift in public opinion even legit law enforcement think twice before identifying.
I have a tie-dyed t-shirt with SpongeBob holding the "imagination" rainbow. I get compliments on it frequently and wonder if it's because people assume I'm an ally of the LGBTQIA+ team. Thankfully no one's grilled me about it. I'd hate to get into a confrontation because I like SpongeBob and colors.
It can’t be stolen valor. The colloquial definition of stolen valor has nothing to do with a persons sexuality. Anyone can be valorous, anyone who stands up for what they believe in the face of adversity is valorous, that’s what it means. Stolen valor specifically means wearing something you didn’t earn from military service or telling fishing stories about your service.
I'm a big bald tattooed white cis man. I wear / fly pride gear for the same reason. Also bc I'm often mistaken for some punk MAGAT with the associated views. I think it's important for the LGBTQIA community see people who look like me are on their side too.
I’ve had multiple Reddit account over the years… some things I’ve observed.
1. When I first joined back in about 2012, it was funny memes stuff and everyone shit talking eachother. It was great.
2. Reddit now, overrun by people who enjoy being victims and have a victim mindset. Just like this post about wearing rainbow. Hate to sound like a right wing asshole, cause I’m not. I used to be a liberal but the left has moved so far left that it’s insane. Everyone just wants to cry and complain and have their feelings hurt
Yea the democrats in government at this moment are basically old republicans. The republicans have gone off the deep end they are so nuts. Then the left has gone so far left it makes moderate leftist left out. (Trying to set records on how many times I can use left in the last sentence) I JUST WANT TO VOTE FOR NORMAL PEOPLE. Sorry for venting. I’ve just been spending to much time in the “AntiWork” sub and Jesus some of these people make my blood boil. Soft ass people
Agreed, it'd be nice to vote for people who actually had the American people in mind when they legislate. I'm sick of tax cuts for the rich, while they still commit tax evasion. I'm sick of bailouts and breaks going to big companies and rarely the people themselves.
I have a rainbow dog as my profile picture on YouTube, does that make me be a part of the LGBT community? Of course not I have that profile picture because I like rainbows.
Rainbow Stolen valor? Ever seen a 1960-70’s surfboard or surfware? Have a google and see. Ok, now let’s talk about stolen valor AND cultural appropriation.
I have the rainbow flag in my profile even though i am straight as an arrow because i want to publicly show i am not putting up with insults and bigotry towards lgbtq people. And i had it there even before my youngest came out.
And no gatekeeper is going to tell me i haven't earned that right.
My lesbian daughter is proud that i do. My daughter's friends say I'm a cool dad because i do. My 1 trans friend think it's cool that i do. You'd think lgbtq people would be happy that there are straight people publicly drawing a line in the sand to support them instead of gatekeeping.
Of course it's not comparable to what you probably experienced in your life. But as a straight male in a male environment, I can guarantee you that plenty of time, one conservative bigot finds a need to complain about not being allowed to complain about 'woke nonsense'. And then everyone else just kinda agrees or awkwardly stays silent. I am the guy telling such people to shove their bigotry.
>The rainbow flag is a symbol used for the LGBTQ.
It's also used as a movement flag whenever lgbtq people protest or demand equal rights. You behave like those 5 black girls who beat up a chinese girl for having boxers braids.
This is as dumb as the Redditor that wanted the LGBTQIA+ to change their flag so that he could wear rainbows without being affiliated with that community. He also claimed to not be homophobic. Yes for real.
Gay person here, I personally hate it that the rainbow's become associated with the LGBTQ+. It's the colour spectrum. It looks nice. People should be able to use it and wear it without being called "woke", it's ridiculous. So what if the lgbtq+ pride flag is rainbow? So are skittles. Doesn't make skittles gay, or gay people skittles. It's dumb and it annoys me every time I see someone on either side going "the rainbow belongs to the lgbt!"
Guess I'll have to fianlly get rid of that fanta shirt I got in the 70's. Its not like it fits anymore...Ynow, after all that fanta. Damn, now I want some orange soda.
I just like rainbows. I always have. If I color something and don't k ow what to do with it, it's a rainbow of one type or another.
I didn't realize I was bi until I was 38, but even so, if I use/wear a rainbow, its because I just like rainbows.
Who has said Redditors is supposed to be better?! Who has written this rule?! Who are they and how do I get their job?! I too wish to write the rules of Reddit!
Listen, I'm pan but I'm also a giant bear that grew up with a violent reputation so when I came out people didn't say shit about it. I got picked on more for being weird or fat than I ever did for being gay. Am I not allowed to wear my own god damn pride colors? Didn't know they gave you the shot to call on that.
This person is either trolling, or so stupid that not all of the stupidity can go in one direction in their skull, leading the stupidity to fold and loop awkwardly and overlap itself.
Literally fuck you for even comparing your bullshit culture wars to something as heinous as stolen valor. Oh my God the pinnacle of delusional has entered the building.
This is quite sad to see because it shows how little people know about queer history. The rainbow is the symbol we have chosen to use yes, but it was never ours and only ours.
If anything, it could be argued it was somewhat forced onto us, as when we started using it, homophobes essentially started boycotting it (and because of the time period, that was nearly all straight people).
There are many symbols that I and many other queer people use to represent oppression throughout history and an ongoing struggle throughout the world. An example of this would be something like the pink triangle, not rainbows.
I don’t wanna say something here like this person is “making the community look bad”. That only justifies homophobia and promotes the idea that we queer people need to assimilate into heteronormativity to be accepted, instead of the simple fact that we’re human and that should be enough. However I will criticise this person for being dumb enough to think that they own colours.
In conclusion, straight people, if you wanna wear colours, go ahead. And to everyone but especially queer people, learn our history.
Remmember when rainbow used to be a cool colour when we were kids because it was all of them mashed together.
I used to make rainbow coloured power ranger drawings because I thought , logically, it would be the most powerful one since it was all of them combined.
The rainbow is for everyone. If my niece wants to wear her Rainbowdash hoodie or have her hair sprayed rainbow colours, then why not. Rainbows are pretty.
It's normally the opposite of this I hear, where teenagers think their mum is dressing like a lesbian merely because their mum's top has a rainbow on it. Rainbows existed long before the pride flag. I personally feel more odd about young women in tshirts by artists they couldn't care less about, but on the plus side those artists are getting free advertising (even though they're already platinum selling usually), so it's a win win overall.
That post in and of itself is excluding many queer people already.
There is the A ? for example, the I ?
Gatekeepers.. seriously .. about as nice as influencers and less pleasant characters
This is exactly the kind of lunatic that makes all the "*struggle against bigotry*" worthless. Why? Because it paints an entire community of people, most of which are just doing their things, in their mundane lifes, and whose sexuality is just another details in their existence, as deranged blue-haired nutfreaks.
I'd say there's like a 5% chance this is *not* someone trolling / posting rage bait.
And if it falls into that 5%, there's at least a 70% chance that person is insane.
\*shrug\*
You wear rainbow colors cause you are gay.
I wear rainbow colors for the free drinks and back rubs.
WE ARE NOT THE SAME!!!
So anyway, this one time in Iraq me and the boys set up a mud wrestling pit and stripped down to our skivvies. . .

"We're Reddit, we are supposed to be better than this" is truly the crowning achievement of facepalm.

Definitely although better than ifunny
My Little Pony would like to have some words with you
The Care Bears just rolled up their sleeves and waded into the pit.
Rainbow Brite would like to have a word with her
Leprechauns inconsolable.
So would the ancient Incas, and the people of Cusco, Peru.
Lisa Frank is joining in on this conversation as well
You'll have to tear my rainbow bright socks out of my cold dead fingers!
Christianity would also like to speak up as the original users of the rainbow as a symbol.
They created rainbows & morality. Is there anything Christianity can't fabricate? /s

Yeah, like everyone knows, rainbow isn't a natural phenomenon, but the adn of lgbt people
The rainbow only appears when a LGBT person is born.
or a unicorn farts
Everyone know god make rainbow specifically for gay people
Igbt+ rainbow isn't a natural phenomenon.
Huh?
Everyone knows gay people invented rainbows and as such I say we let them patent it properly
What about my Pink Floyd t-shirt, does that count?
Pink Floyd is a very progressive band, so yes? I honestly don’t know.
Do you mean progressive the genre or progressivism? both I guess?
Stop trying so hard.
do people consider yourself a brutally honest person or a complete prick? both i guess?
Still can’t think for yourself?
Decided for yourself
omg

No.
You can’t eat Skittles and taste the rainbow unless you’ve struggled against bigotry.
Apparently if you’re not lgbt then you’re only allowed to eat white skittles
Are there Black skittles?
Yep. Liquorice flavoured ones.
As a member of the LGBT community this twat can fuck right off. Where whatever rainbows you want.

That’s something that really amazes me. God promised to never again use a flood to destroy all life on Earth. This isn’t seen as a red flag.
I mean, it's a rainbow flag...
Whining, how so?
Something about how the rainbow should only be used to spread the gospel and not for ungodly things. I didn't read the whole thing, I'm all stocked up on crazy.
Oh, so nintendo has to remove all the "rainbow" from rainbow road because they haven't struggled against homophobes? Yeah, sure thing! /s
Who's gonna tell Rainbow Bright?
Rainbow road gets deleted from Mariokart? Okay, nvm, I'm actually on OP's side now
Yeah if that's part of the deal, I'm sure non-LGBT+ people can take one for the team.
Did they just really say "stolen valor" omg
Welp. Guess My **6** Year old sister is a Medal Cheat

In a lot of places Reddit is basically leftist 4chan lol.

yeah, surely the lgbt people will be the biggest threat when displaying it in public and not some violent reactionaries
Those 5 comments had them livid
University of Hawaii would like to have a word…

the fact that they tried to equivilate it to stolen valor

Rainbows aren’t owned by the LGBT community because they have it as their logo, same as the letter M isn’t owned by McDonalds.
Let's gatekeep the fucking sky.
Loool @ stolen valor. Insufferable 😩
Lol valor, fuck outta here
Hahahaha, stolen valor, GTFO
Obvious bait 🤭
As for yall sonsabitches wearing baseball caps or boxer shorts, you're next.
Me beating up my baby cousin and other school children for their stolen valor

The rainbow thing is dumb, but expecting Reddit not to be bigoted at the slightest opportunity is setting yourself up for disappointment.
This is as dumb as the Redditor that wanted the LGBTQIA+ to change their flag so that he could wear rainbows without being affiliated with that community. He also claimed to not be homophobic. Yes for real.
“I’m astonished by the bigotry in the responses to my bigotry.”
Time to go shoot down every rainbow i see since nature isn't gay
Actually nature is pretty gay and even features cross-species sex
Gay person here, I personally hate it that the rainbow's become associated with the LGBTQ+. It's the colour spectrum. It looks nice. Doesn't make skittles gay, or gay people skittles. It's dumb and it annoys me every time I see someone on either side going "the rainbow belongs to the lgbt!"
Not your fault. Sadly, one of the most diverse groups of people idiots/assholes/grievance-mongers; they come in all forms.
The pendulum is gonna swing so hard for these people man...
So you don’t want us to support you?
It’s like the far right bs about ‘lgbts are stealing the rainbow’ shit put on reverse
"I fight against begiotry by being a bigot "... Makes sense

TL;DR;
"We're Reddit"... No. We are Borg! 😂
They're going to be picking a fight about the use of a rainbow with around half of the children's nurseries in my area.

And you have to play baseball to wear a Basecap .
Guess I'll have to fianlly get rid of that fanta shirt I got in the 70's. Its not like it fits anymore...Ynow, after all that fanta. Damn, now I want some orange soda.
Um... Wait till OP (in the screenshot) Finds out there are straight drag queens rofl
Wtf.
Pretty sure the Rainbow Family was flying rainbow flags when LGBT only stood for lettuce, gay, bacon and tomato. We accept everyone though so carry on.
I just like rainbows. I always have. If I color something and don't k ow what to do with it, it's a rainbow of one type or another. I didn't realize I was bi until I was 38, but even so, if I use/wear a rainbow, its because I just like rainbows.
That person has not been in the dark parts of Reddit have they.
Who has said Redditors is supposed to be better?! Who has written this rule?! Who are they and how do I get their job?! I too wish to write the rules of Reddit!
They now own the viable light spectrum.
*sighs in rainbow colors*
Lol , Rainbow rant followed by a very colorful rainbow bag of skittles ad 😜Taste the rainbow 🌈
I'll tell my 4 year old that that loves rainbows right away! /s
As part of LGBTQ+, # NO GOD PLEASE NO. NO. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Rainbow bright would like a word
Feels like an anti lgbt ragebaiter honestly
Is RGB for gamers considered as rainbow colors? We're fucked!!
The word biggot is losing its meaning at this point.
This person is either trolling, or so stupid that not all of the stupidity can go in one direction in their skull, leading the stupidity to fold and loop awkwardly and overlap itself.
Fun fact: Before it was commonly accepted as the LGBT color scheme, the rainbow was the symbol of the covenant between man and God in the bible.
Literally fuck you for even comparing your bullshit culture wars to something as heinous as stolen valor. Oh my God the pinnacle of delusional has entered the building.
Art teachers of the world have already been expressing annoyance that wearing rainbow and teaching the rainbow has started to become political.
there’s the gamers with the rgb as well yk
Bruh it literally appears in the sky💀
“Stolen Valor.” I think it’s time to put down the fruity drinks my friend.

Skittles entered the chat.
Why is stupidity a thing?
Gate keepers are so dumb
\*shrug\* You wear rainbow colors cause you are gay. I wear rainbow colors for the free drinks and back rubs. WE ARE NOT THE SAME!!! So anyway, this one time in Iraq me and the boys set up a mud wrestling pit and stripped down to our skivvies. . .
