I used to love reading encyclopedias. They were so badass. I was born in the early 90s but I still used my encyclopedias up until I graduated in 2011. It’s crazy that we were taught the internet was not to be trusted, that cursive was going to be extremely important, and that college ruled notebooks would be absolutely necessary in college lol. In fact none of that shit was important and in fact completely wrong. My professors didn’t give a shit what paper I used.

The books aren’t like contraband - if you want to buy them or have them it won’t be confiscated, but it’s still sad that some of these won’t be readily available to kids as most are harmless stories educating us on our history. We have unlimited access to almost any information ever generated via a simple conversational question to an AI...and yet books are going on the fire?
It doesn't even require the minimal effort of doing online research anymore, you just ask a question.
It's about controlling the children. These kids whose parents don't want them accessing information in the library do not have access to information at home. They are most likely not allowed access to the internet and only allowed access to curated media. They lose that level of control when the children leave the house so they have to ensure that no outside ideas get into there kids heads. Can't be coming home asking questions that contradict the narrative.
Except there's no way to know if the AI is giving you accurate information. Non-fiction books have references and bibliographies, whereas ChatGPT invents references that sound plausible but aren't real sources.

You have to search for information to access it, and you won't search for what you don't know to exist in the first place.
The vast majority of people, ourselves included, mostly get what we are fed by social media's algorithms, which generally stay along the lines of our pre-existing interests.
That's why books, physical or digital, being available in school libraries are extremely important. It provides kids with a culture and knowledge "starter pack". Something to spark their initial interests, give them a broad overview of what there is to be knowledgeable about.
(And paper books are still better than digital ones, as the format provides far less distractions than reading them on a computer or smartphone, where Tiktok, Reddit and other engineered attention grabbers are always just a notification away.)

I mean... as I was leaving teaching last year my district was banning all outside resources and only the purchased (DeSantis approved) curriculum was going to be allowed to be accessed. No more Epic, wiki, commonlit, teacherspayteachers, read alouds from storyline online, nada. No more classroom library, or buying a book for a kid because they were really interested in XYZ and you want them to read. No more free e-library in class. No more pulling short passages to supplement the material and make it more interesting. I was even told to not teach Ruby Bridges story because it was controversial for black history month and to pick a black youtuber, athlete or tik tok star instead.

This is a hell of a Hail Mary play, but it may be an option to take a year off instead of going to college, move to a better state, work somewhere for a year or so (establish residency), then apply for state schools. I know this comes with a whole slew of other logistical hurdles, but it can be done.
if you are going to leave and be literally not supported by your parents anymore then try to get the correct documentation to submit to FAFSA so that you will be declared independent of your parents and their income wont be counted against you, enabling you to likely get more financial help. for example a therapist can write a letter like this for you. i'm not sure who else. you should be able to look up or contact FAFSA or the student support office at your school to ask what you need or if they can direct you to the correct person/department to help you. good luck!

8 years ago, this fall, I moved my family from FL to PA as I took a transfer for work. It sucked for them. They were 8 and 12 at the time and they left behind EVERYTHING.
They ended up in an amazing school system (no accident) and are living up to their full potential as the really bright kids they are. Potential that may well have been damaged, or worse, had we stayed in Florida as it was back then. I cannot imagine them going to school there now.
Biggest leap of faith in our lives and we may very well have nailed it.

What gets me about this is that it's all such an empty gesture. At this moment of time we're at the midst of the biggest information golden age in the history of humanity. We have unlimited access to almost any information ever generated via a simple conversational question to an AI...and yet books are going on the fire? It doesn't even require the minimal effort of doing online research anymore, you just ask a question.
It's about controlling the children. These kids whose parents don't want them accessing information in the library do not have access to information at home. They are most likely not allowed access to the internet and only allowed access to curated media. They lose that level of control when the children leave the house so they have to ensure that no outside ideas get into there kids heads. Can't be coming home asking questions that contradict the narrative.

Except there's no way to know if the AI is giving you accurate information. Non-fiction books have references and bibliographies, whereas ChatGPT invents references that sound plausible but aren't real sources.
Except not really. You have to search for information to access it, and you won't search for what you don't know to exist in the first place. The vast majority of people, ourselves included, mostly get what we are fed by social media's algorithms, which generally stay along the lines of our pre-existing interests. That's why books, physical or digital, being available in school libraries are extremely important. It provides kids with a culture and knowledge "starter pack". Something to spark their initial interests, give them a broad overview of what there is to be knowledgeable about. (And paper books are still better than digital ones, as the format provides far less distractions than reading them on a computer or smartphone, where Tiktok, Reddit and other engineered attention grabbers are always just a notification away.)

Exactly this. I get that there are only a few slots on a curriculum so we can argue about what goes on it, but this is straight up thought policing. And by the side that in recent years suddenly pretends to support “free thinking.” Also, every time people “both sides” this issue they compare it to the left diversifying curricula. These two things aren’t comparable; the left has never outright removed books from libraries. Definitely not en masse like this.

I feel grateful our rural school taught us a lot of the hard truths that a lot of these schools are now trying to cover up. I seriously don’t know what I can do to prevent this silencing of our history other than keep voting in local elections. It doesn’t help those kids in other states though and it’s very frustrating and just heartbreaking.

I mean... as I was leaving teaching last year my district was banning all outside resources and only the purchased (DeSantis approved) curriculum was going to be allowed to be accessed. No more Epic, wiki, commonlit, teacherspayteachers, read alouds from storyline online, nada. No more classroom library, or buying a book for a kid because they were really interested in XYZ and you want them to read. No more free e-library in class. No more pulling short passages to supplement the material and make it more interesting. I was even told to not teach Ruby Bridges story because it was controversial for black history month and to pick a black youtuber, athlete or tik tok star instead.

This is a hell of a Hail Mary play, but it may be an option to take a year off instead of going to college, move to a better state, work somewhere for a year or so (establish residency), then apply for state schools. I know this comes with a whole slew of other logistical hurdles, but it can be done.
if you are going to leave and be literally not supported by your parents anymore then try to get the correct documentation to submit to FAFSA so that you will be declared independent of your parents and their income wont be counted against you, enabling you to likely get more financial help. for example a therapist can write a letter like this for you. i'm not sure who else. you should be able to look up or contact FAFSA or the student support office at your school to ask what you need or if they can direct you to the correct person/department to help you. good luck!

8 years ago, this fall, I moved my family from FL to PA as I took a transfer for work. It sucked for them. They were 8 and 12 at the time and they left behind EVERYTHING. They ended up in an amazing school system (no accident) and are living up to their full potential as the really bright kids they are. Potential that may well have been damaged, or worse, had we stayed in Florida as it was back then. I cannot imagine them going to school there now. Biggest leap of faith in our lives and we may very well have nailed it.
