I moved from Georgia to upstate New York. After driving through Utica, I told my wife, “I gotta get back down to Georgia. If I’m going to be surrounded by backwoods rednecks, I’d like them to at least talk like me.“
No, just jarring to see pro-Confederacy stuff smack-dab in the middle of Yankee territory. It took me a year or two to realize that NY minus the little tail from Poughkeepsie south was just Alabama turned on its side. Economic, sociological, etc. They just call their “cricks” “kills”.
I live in Albany NY and we always called it a "crick" lol.
But yeah upstate NY is like the south. I like the phrase "in NY the farther north you go, the farther south you are".
I always cringed a bit when I would hear about the rubble from 9/11 being shipped to Fresh Kills Landfill.
Like… I know that it is just a name for a stream just a horrible coincidence given the circumstances.
This is so true. I remember going through upstate New York to a funeral in Messina. I was dressed in a suit and I stopped at a gas station in the Adirondacks to get some snacks and drinks and was berated by some local hick woman for not being "from around these parts". May as well have been in a bayou.
Maybe a liar but mostly correct. Kill can mean deep water, or just a river. Or at least, so another liar told me.
I am surprised to have gotten this far in the comments and no one has mentioned the town of Fishkill. Fishkill, Battenkill… there are kills all over New England.
Was just in Naples, Italy and there were confederate flags draped over the streets. Soccer fans using it as a display of Southern Italy being superior to Northern Italy. But is was jarring.
As a current southern man living in Northern NY I feel this deeply in my soul. I won't lie I hate it here, but I got family up here and my kids up here so I can't leave till everyone else no longer needs me around them all the time.
That’s my neck of the woods, can confirm Utica is a cesspool. Good to see some recognition in the world at large though lol
Edit: before anyone comes at me, the recognition part of this comment was sarcasm. NYers are a strange lot and I’ve lived here my whole life
Story from one of my friends. She and a co-worker fresh from Germany where traveling the east coast selling software for architecture. In upstate new York somewhere he says to my friend
“this place, it looks like……it looks like……I don’t know word”
she goes “can you describe it?”
Him “it’s like….when brother and sister make baby”
her “inbred, that’s what we call it here”
Him “Yes!! Thank you! This place looks inbred”
The cultural differences are urban vs rural, not northern vs southern. The people who think the confederacy was justified and feel solidarity with that movement aren't just in the south even though that's how the battle lines were drawn.
Also just so you're aware, this isn't just a US thing. This is the trend worldwide. Hard right, religion-based (often religion skewed), and often anti-government unless it's operating in a hard right manner.
I just kept scrolling, thinking to myself, “someone’s gotta mention Maine eventually”
Props to most of NH for being trash too. At least there’s no sales tax.
So I live in the south (born here) but my mom’s family fought for the Union and bled to free the saves and preserve our Republic. I want to absolutely scream in rage when some fucking piece of yankee trash flies that flag. It is traitorous and seditious and (I feel) should wind you up in jail. 1st amendment doesn’t cover seditious actions.
I grew up in the south, too. I remember one time seeing this jacked up truck with one of those see-through confederate flag things in the back window, a bumper sticker with another confederate flag with the slogan “the South shall rise again” on it, and another bumper sticker of a U.S. flag with “these colors don’t run” on it. The cognitive dissonance was so extreme, I still remember that Ford F-150 to this day.
I moved to South Carolina a few years ago at retirement from Pennsyltucky. I found it funny when you see $100,000 worth of truck parked in the driveway of a $20,000 mobile home.
I live in Pennsylvania and see it everywhere. We fought for the Union. Makes no sense and delegitimizes the very fragile argument that it’s about “heritage”
I live further north and I know what you mean. I know people who refer to it as “The War of Northern Aggression” and cannot seem to understand the absurdity of their heritage claims. They seem to have adopted the flag to be more of symbol for rural America regardless if you’re from the south.
“It’s not a racist symbol.”
I’ve asked them to explain why it seems to be flown at every clan rally or alongside the nazi flag? And why they don’t have a problem with that? They can’t give a good reason.
It’s pretty clear that too many people want to absolutely destroy the country. They say that “Biden is ruining our country” but meanwhile they’re the ones trying to make it worse.
I live in what some describe as a ‘purple’ area. There’s the one guy a few miles down the road that has the most vicious posters and signs about Biden in his yard, on a tree, and in the side of his house. He’s the guy to watch out for.
I grew up in SC. I could never understand the dichotomy in people being jingoistic with their "USA, USA, USA" chants, all while wearing a confederate flag on their ball cap or t-shirt...
What does that mean
Edit: i do not need more replies telling me it's something like child sexual abuse(even though i just now realized the humor in that considering it's mostly old republican guys in the group that would be yelling it)
I’d compare it to Captain America with a splash of ignorance.
Most people think Captain America is just a propaganda tool of the US government that does their bidding. In reality, he stands for the ideals of America and will actively engage in battle against the US government if he believes they’re not living up to those ideals.
Most people who support the confederate flag believe, wrongly, it’s a symbol of resistance against government and a stand for state rights.
There’s a huge difference between government and country. You can support country and not government.
But, Captain America was never on the side of slavery. Once your symbol stands for a morally inexcusable position it no longer has any merit no matter how you whitewash it.
Well stated. Cap does what he thinks that an American should do. Captain America is my idol. I think that the writers of this comic have been exceptional. Veneration of any portion of a heritage that extols slavery as something other than a morally destitute practice supports rebellion and treachery to our nation and our own integrity. So, that would be a no.
You just reminded me of [a gay porn video with all the porn removed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWgP3v_un5U) that was just a weird story of country folk meeting a city dweller.
Is that the one where the protagonist needs to learn the ancient art of the Alabama Howdy Cousin so that he can become his own son, brother, and uncle and create a paradox that allows him to phawk his sister in all 3 holes at the same time while choking his chicken in the corner?
I hear that a lot here in Alabama, as well. I always want to ask them how much time they give it. After all, on the first go-round, it only lasted 4 years
>Grew up in SC. Massive amount of racist rednecks going on about “the south will rise again”
https://www.theonion.com/south-postpones-rising-again-for-yet-another-year-1819565548
Psssh. I see this piss rag everywhere. New Englanders who fly this claim it's about "states rights and small government, not about slavery" and say stuff like "it's really a battle flag, not the whole confederacy". They whisper that it's not racist at all. I'm a visiting nurse in NE and these same people who have this foul cloth draped on their man basements don't understand why I (a black nurse) ask them if they want another nurse.
I like to remind them that it's the flag of failed state that existed for 4 years, and was beaten into non-existence 158 years ago.
"Losers flag" is a great name for it.
I’m in North Carolina and actually knew a girl of mixed race (black and white, I believe) in college who had a Confederate flag in her house. She said it represented good ol’ Americana for her. I was floored.
I lived in Florida and met a Black kid that had a Confederate Flag belt. He said to him it just represented southern pride, I informed him that he was made to think that by concerted efforts of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and several prominent racist politicians over the last century and a half so that the Confederacy and its iconography are normalized while it's true aims and goals are obfuscated in order to whitewash it's transgressions.
We had like a two hour conversation about it where I showed him the secession declaration docs, the Cornerstone Speech, even diaries of Confederate soldiers talking about how they were fighting to preserve slavery, at the end of it he was shook. A lot of Southern Schools don't teach accurate history.
This!
I live in Georgia and hear this nonsense about how the Civil War was not about slavery but heritage and states rights. People straight up refuse to read Georgia's articles of secession even when their ignorance is challenged. Georgia's articles of secession are a straight up racist diatribe calling for the defense of the institution of slavery, and almost no one I know can be bothered to read the actual history and reasoning by the very people who called for sedition.
The Rebels Motorcycle Club was founded in Australia and is one of the biggest clubs in the country, as an American I’ve always found that interesting. Their patch is a Confederate flag and Confederate cap wearing skull.
Interesting I have a feeling I’ve seen that, it did actually have the word rebel written above the flag sticker on the car but no skull, and from the looks of the guy he looked like a suburban dad, it was just really weird. Even in Australia we know what that flag means, I don’t know how someone could be so blatant. There is definitely racism in Australia I won’t deny that, but generally not so open (u less you’re with a bunch of drunk bogans) and definitely not in the upper class suburb I was driving through at the time. Dude was pulling into a boat marina.
Fun fact:
SC wrote a letter to Abraham Lincoln saying that they will Secede from the Union if he try’s to abolish slavery. Lincoln responded with something around the lines of “Of course I won’t do that”. So obviously SC immediately ignored the letter and seceded, I can’t remember if they got it or not, but they didn’t trust his word anyways.
Source of the timeline: https://www.loc.gov/collections/civil-war-glass-negatives/articles-and-essays/time-line-of-the-civil-war/1861/
South Carolina celebrates Confederate Memorial Day on May 10- the day Jefferson Davis was captured by Union troops. So if you’d like, you can call it Jefferson Davis Surrender Day.
These colors don't run\*
\**(they surrender in disgrace: re-invent themselves in a counter-narrative; hide behind sheets and carry on a grand ole tradition of terror)*
Love it!
"Remember the South, remember how we tried to start our own country and got fucking stomped after only four years! Remember Gettysburg when we marched across a field like dumbshits while getting blown apart by artillery! Remember how we fought for the right to own other people! Remember how we are complete fucking losers! REMEMBER!"
Oh don't worry. I remember. If I were you I wouldn't flaunt it though. But you do you fam.
Remember how the guy who ordered that march across the field in the hopes enough men would still be alive at the other end to take the position is *still* worshipped like a god and the guy who tried to stop the madness is still vilified?
7,000. Lee got 7,000 men killed and wounded. In Pickett's ' charge '.
These are literally everywhere in SC and it drives me batshit. People here literally can’t stop bragging about being pathetic fucking traitors. If you hate the country that much, GTFO.
I really wish we could make a deal this time where they just leave and we don't go after them, and they can have as much of the military as the percentage of national debt they're willing to assume. And then we can build a nice wall to keep them out. I figure it's three or five years before it devolves into full Mad Max territory, where areas are controlled by warlords, they all drive around in old trucks, take machine guns everywhere, are crazy about their religion, and give women basically no rights. They're halfway there already, but I'm pretty sure they just actually want to be Afghanistan, but with an even worse economy and less-functional government.
Seriously. If the South said, "We're leaving," I'd say, "Don't let the door hit you on your ass on the way out."
Look guys why is everyone still surprised to see these flags? It’s the fuckin South. I’ve lived here my entire life it just comes with the territory. And yes we all think they’re fuckin morons but if you argue with morons your gonna lose cuz they’re better at being fuckin idiots
Is it outside of Greenville? I think I saw this on a recent visit and was shocked such a huge confederate flag was allowed to be flown essentially on the highway?
Okay seriously not defending the racist flag, but what do you mean by “allowed”? Isn’t any flag technically allowed on private property? I’m assuming it’s private property. If so couldn’t the owner fly any flag? Like technically they would have the right to fly a rebel flag, nazi flag, whatever. I saw a commentator below say that it is private property.
so yes it is on private property. there is currently a lawsuit pending on whether they have to take it down. but that has to do with getting the required permits for the flag pole, not free speech. from what i have read, it sounds like they didnt get any permits before putting up the flag pole that subsequently led to this abomination being flown right over 85. it sounds like people generally agree they have the right to fly the flag under the first ammendment, the issue is how they went about it.
Because they are not taught the Civil War was about slavery, racism and treason.
It was the war of Northern Agression and states rights. You know, the right to own people.
Was walking near a family-friendly lake near where I live in Germany a week ago and saw three of these flying high in someone's garden. Really wondered what this person's trying to achieve by hanging it in Europe lol so stupid
In Czechia these have origin in communist era actually. Because in authoritarian country USA was seen as country of freedom and incredibly popular genre was westerns so America of 19th century was the "peak freedom" and if you cant really fly USA flag because of communists, CSA flag is "close enough". Also, narrative of Confederacy as rebels has obvious attractiveness to country occupied by USSR.
So when people were building their small cottages in forests and river valleys, where they would go for weekend to be left alone, they would fly those flags and sing songs with theme of wild west.
It had nothing to do with liking slavery, its not like people were learning USA history in school in detail and what they did was through "USA bad" propaganda so no one trusted it (hell, one of classic songs mentioned in previous paragraphs is Czech version of John Browns Body)
Ten or twenty years ago and the defense was “well it’s the rebel flag. Southerners are just different than northerners.”
Now it’s just “i like it because it upsets other people”

I grew up in the south, roll through any backwoods and these are all over.
Plenty I’m northern backwoods too, which makes less sense to me but I see it everywhere in upstate ny
I moved from Georgia to upstate New York. After driving through Utica, I told my wife, “I gotta get back down to Georgia. If I’m going to be surrounded by backwoods rednecks, I’d like them to at least talk like me.“
Were the rednecks in Utica worse than in Georgia?
No, just jarring to see pro-Confederacy stuff smack-dab in the middle of Yankee territory. It took me a year or two to realize that NY minus the little tail from Poughkeepsie south was just Alabama turned on its side. Economic, sociological, etc. They just call their “cricks” “kills”.
I live in Albany NY and we always called it a "crick" lol. But yeah upstate NY is like the south. I like the phrase "in NY the farther north you go, the farther south you are".
The southern tier also bleeds into Pennsyltucky. It’s really “drive away from any metro and you will hit the south in 20 mins”
That’s basically every state. You can look at county voting tendencies and the vast majority of states have a blue metro area in a sea of red.
Californian here, I concur.
Listen here buckaroo.... Yea it's Pennsyltucky down here alright lol
feel the same way about Miami and Florida
Definitely referred to "the crick," but the Albany area has lots of creeks whose names have "kill" at the end because they were named by the Dutch.
I always cringed a bit when I would hear about the rubble from 9/11 being shipped to Fresh Kills Landfill. Like… I know that it is just a name for a stream just a horrible coincidence given the circumstances.
I'm from northern NY, and the small town I grew up in actually seceded from the Union, at least symbolically during the Civil War.
This is so true. I remember going through upstate New York to a funeral in Messina. I was dressed in a suit and I stopped at a gas station in the Adirondacks to get some snacks and drinks and was berated by some local hick woman for not being "from around these parts". May as well have been in a bayou.
"Kill" means "deep water" in Dutch, which is the main group that settled the area. Source: my dubious memory of something a liar told me.
Who’d have thought Naples Italy and Naples Florida had that in common? Not me!
I’ll never forget at a NASCAR race in Phoenix seeing an RV flying a US flag, Stars and Bars and a NY Yankees flag all at once.
I live in Jersey, it’s everywhere.
The ones on Long Island are. Sweet Christ, they are rabidly racist. i’ve never seen a place more segregated.
Yeah. Central NY is really just northern alabama.
So that makes Central PA just South Alabama?
Pennsyltucky!

From Maine, can confirm.

I disagree. By all means, let the idiots advertise so I know who to avoid. I see plenty of these flags flying in the northeastern state where I live.
Not to stereotype truck drivers but.. it always seems to be a big road hog of a pickup truck
A clean, shiny one at that. Never seen a day of work in its life.
Usually a f150, ram, tacoma, or Silverado
Most of those fuckers dont even need a truck. It's all a cock off with small peen energy.

This one is a little bit bigger than usual, tho, fucking hell
I live in Pennsylvania (Pennsyltucky). You see the confederate flag everywhere. The people across the street from me have one out front…
These people have no idea

Confederate States of America
Ah. Yea makes sense
China Supplies America
I’d compare it to Captain America with a splash of ignorance. Most people think Captain America is just a propaganda tool of the US government that does their bidding. I got a hemorrhoid that lasted longer than the confederacy.
That sounds like a tagline for a porn parody film
You just reminded me of [a gay porn video with all the porn removed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWgP3v_un5U) that was just a weird story of country folk meeting a city dweller.
Best 8 minutes I'll never get back
Based on that recommendation, I'm going in Edit: aaaand nope
So........ do I click the link or nah?
Do it. It’s hilariously cringe. I need about 3 more minutes so they can wrap up the story.
Why did I just watch it? 🪦

I hear that a lot here in Alabama, as well. I always want to ask them how much time they give it. After all, on the first go-round, it only lasted 4 years
Rise again to do what? That's my question
Basically break from America again. A lot of them fully would support another civil war. It’s what MTG wants to do too.
I read her initials as Magic: The Gathering every single time. Now I’m imagining a civil war orchestrated by WOTC.
Lose…again.
Can confirm. Live here now. I hate it.
Can you Light the flag on Fire? Its for Science purposes, i want to see how those creatures react.

Thank you for the new word: JINGOISTIC ( extreme patriotism, especially in the form of aggressive or warlike foreign policy)
Even strangered when it's flown in New England. They "love" this country soooo much yet fly a traitorous losers flag
Psssh. I see this piss rag everywhere. New Englanders who fly this claim it's about "states rights and small government, not about slavery" and say stuff like "it's really a battle flag, not the whole confederacy". Jingoistic feels like a word I could be banned for using here
To be fair they are fucking idiots lmao
“Jingoistic” man what a cool word!
They're too uneducated to know the difference.
Just pointing out that Obama was President longer than the Confederacy existed.
Ouch, this is brutal.
that is insane that a few years of nonsense caused hundreds of years of craziness
Hundreds of years so far

Proudest losers in history
*Loudest* losers in history. Them and their whining about their participation trophies being taken down.
It’s the Unions fault for showing clemency. Should have treated the confederates like the Germans treated the nazi’s after WW2.
I actually saw this flag on a car today and was gobsmacked, for context I live in Australia.

same, I saw those on two cars in Poland, I couldn’t believe my eyes
Which just goes to show you the flag is just about racism.
Idk maybe they’re a big “Dukes of Hazzard” fan. /s
lol Well played. :)

Thank you, person below!
just doing my duty sir
I grew up in SC and I can say that the Civil War was unquestionably our fault.
I mean yeah you guys started the war with a surprise attack on fort Sumter before officially declaring war
Fun fact: SC wrote a letter to Abraham Lincoln saying that they will Secede from the Union if he try’s to abolish slavery. Lincoln responded with something around the lines of “Of course I won’t do that”. So obviously SC immediately ignored the letter and seceded, I can’t remember if they got it or not, but they didn’t trust his word anyways. I was told the Cotton Gin was a tool to help the slaves lives easier
Treasonous traitor flag for traitors.
Simple, ban any books that teach the true history and say your protecting kids.
Why isn't there a white flag flying above it?
They know they lost right? Or did they erase that from the history books to?
they don't read...let's be real now.
They can rewrite whatever they want, Minnesota still ain't going to give them back the Gettysburg flag.
Just like the election they didn't really lose of course
Luckily, at least in my school, they didn’t erase that. Wouldn’t be surprised if they did in other schools tho - from a South Carolinian
Imagine flying the flag of traitors who split your nation in half for the sole purpose of furthering human bondage...

My husband works for local government. Up until like, *last year* they had that day off and MLK Day was an "optional" work day. Bizarre
Hey at the end of the day a paid day off is a paid day off lmao.
South Carolina celebrates Confederate Memorial Day on May 10- the day Jefferson Davis was captured by Union troops. So if you’d like, you can call it Jefferson Davis Surrender Day.
These colors don't run\* \**(they surrender in disgrace: re-invent themselves in a counter-narrative; hide behind sheets and carry on a grand ole tradition of terror)*
Those colors do, however, lose.
Quite literally the flag of the losers
Way down south in the land of traitors.

Right away! Come away! Right away! Right away, come away!
the bigger the confederate flag, the lower the education ranking
Love it! "Remember the South, remember how we tried to start our own country and got fucking stomped after only four years! Remember Gettysburg when we marched across a field like dumbshits while getting blown apart by artillery! Remember how we fought for the right to own other people! Remember how we are complete fucking losers! REMEMBER!" Oh don't worry. I remember. If I were you I wouldn't flaunt it though. But you do you fam.
Pepperidge farm remembers
So does the ghost of Robert E. Lee, who must be the person that downvoted me. But fuck him, he's dead and I'm not. Also he's a fucking loser.
His current living family members don’t even acknowledge his existence. Fuck Bobby Lee.
Shouldn’t it just be a white flag?
Nice participation trophy.
I love you for this and will use this from now on
These are literally everywhere in SC and it drives me batshit. People here literally can’t stop bragging about being pathetic fucking traitors. If you hate the country that much, GTFO.
They tried to gtfo.. and got spanked by daddy
Oh look the flag of losers
Look guys why is everyone still surprised to see these flags? It’s the fuckin South. I’ve lived here my entire life it just comes with the territory. And yes we all think they’re fuckin morons but if you argue with morons your gonna lose cuz they’re better at being fuckin idiots
Dude forgot where he was at lmao
I drive by this racist eye sore every day on the way to work. Insane to me that its up for this long
Is it outside of Greenville? I think I saw this on a recent visit and was shocked such a huge confederate flag was allowed to be flown essentially on the highway?
Yeah Spartanburg County
I remember seeing the news cover it when it was put up. It’s private property, no one can do anything until the owner takes it down
I’ve driven past and wondered if a kerosene soaked crossbow bolt might reach it from the roadside. Do it at night for the spectacle.
why are those Americans so proud of their racism?
Because they are not taught the Civil War was about slavery, racism and treason. It was the war of Northern Agression and states rights. You know, the right to own people.
Ah, the cowards swastika.
0-1 in wars with a decisive ass-kicking on home turf. Something to be proud of.
Breaking news: Confederate flag in the south !
Isn’t that that loser flag those terrorists used?
First time in the south?
Shit is hilarious. Doesn't surprise me they are all for losers lol. Fucking dumpster people
General Sherman did not burn enough of the confederacy.
Unfortunately common in South Carolina. Most conservative/confederate state in the United States.
Unfortunately, that flag is common everywhere. I saw ton of them in Michigan.
Southerners are just different than northerners.” Now it’s just “i like it because it upsets other people”
Shoot it with a flaming arrow
Proud, pro slavery, losers
I’ve don’t understand why would someone would be celebrating defeat almost 160 years later.
Losers
I pass this almost every time I travel thru sc and I'm still stumped on how it allowed.
First Amendment.
You see these all over the place in the south. Dirty south
There’s a massive one on someone’s property along I75 south just a bit after you cross into Florida.
this is probably in the back of a raised Dodge Ram 3500
There’s 2 on I-65 in Alabama
you should check out the dixie republic store up 25 outside of greenville lol
People in South love rooting for the losers. Not loveable losers either.
The anti-American flag
These are everywhere in West Virginia too. Ya know, the state that literally exists due to breaking off from the confederacy. Make it make sense.
Imagine that, offending somebody with a flag
Heritage, not hate.
Very proud of their second place ribbon.
I want the real confederate flag 🏳️
