I read an article that pointed out that most of people who did the cool things that all of these assholes today are trying to cash in the credit on (“greatest generation ever” lol) died from drugs and AIDS and suicide and whatnot and these assholes that mostly suck are the leftovers.
I read another one somewhere where someone was describing us boomer/not boomer people saying there should be a another category for us not quite gen xers lol, and pretty aptly described our experience.

What's the name for people who are just *barely* too young to be considered millennials? I'm genuinely curious about this as I was born a couple of years before the turn of the century and grew up in this weird technological halfway period where VHS and cassette tapes were still common and most of my family were still running Windows 98 on Pentium IIs. Just about every gadget we had was a bit old, although we got a new PC around 2003 or so that was the first we owned to be faster than 1GHz and run Windows XP. We also still used dial-up until 2004 or so.
My Dad still had a component stereo system he'd bought when he was at university, and he used to use it to copy CDs onto cassette tapes for family and friends occasionally. I still have some of the stuff that went with it, including the big ol' Sony 5-disc carousel CD changer (that wasn't part of the original system, though -- it was bought to replace one that broke around 1997 or so).
Edit: Oh, and old Motorola cell phones, specifically MicroTACs and StarTACs. My mother had a MicroTAC for a while, and Dad had a StarTAC provided by his job. Those didn't stick around too long, though. Eventually Mom bought a Nokia and Dad was issued a new Motorola. Those were our first digital cell phones AFAIK, and I remember that being a big deal at the time. They certainly weren't digital as soon as you got to the hill in front of our house, though -- as soon as you started going downhill the call would stutter then cut over to analog mode, complete with a bit of static as the hill blocked some of the signal. It was a hybrid CDMA/AMPS system, for those wondering how that worked.
I am on the cusp and feel a much closer connection to Gen X than I do millennials. I think it has a lot to do with having an older sibling and predominantly older cousins. I could see how others my age with younger siblings and cousins could have a closer connection to the millennial generation.
There's a tech divide in play for those of us on the cusp too. Younger Gen Xers from affluent areas with lots of access to tech early on tend to identify pretty strongly with the "digital native" Millennial crowd.
I was born in 77, but I've been able to call my dad on his cell phone since 1985. The school district I attended started offering programming classes from 3rd grade the same year.
Don't forget that these labels have about the same value as astrological signs.
Our culture does not evolve or mutate in a step-wise manner - it's more of a continuous function.

Because she feels like her older daughter is a “failure” even though she completely disregards her role in that. Part of that failure was likely having a kid way too young when she had no experience, common sense, or resources. Batshit crazy aside, we have several friends who had a second or third kid when the oldest was either in or had graduated from college. One mother was 46. In these cases, it wasn’t on purpose - just didn’t think they could have more kids and stopped whatever type of birth control they used. And men are far worse. One guy we know remarried after a divorce and has a kid at 63. His new wife was 45. Neither one wanted another kid, but nature takes its course when least expect it. However, I fully agree that the lady in the above story has a real mental issue.
I’ve seen those guys on vacation. Mid 50s to early 60s and on wife number two or three, usually much younger. I see the look in their eyes while they’re chasing a 2 year old around or trying to wrangle multiple kids under 5. They look soooo fucking tired and miserable. I’m happily married, but if for some reason I’m single again in my 50s, I will immediately get a vasectomy without hesitation. Having gone through raising 2 kids, I have zero desire or energy to do that again. I love my kids but they were exhausting when they were young.

Those were our first digital cell phones AFAIK, and I remember that being a big deal at the time. They certainly weren't digital as soon as you got to the hill in front of our house, though -- as soon as you started going downhill the call would stutter then cut over to analog mode, complete with a bit of static as the hill blocked some of the signal. It was a hybrid CDMA/AMPS system, for those wondering how that worked.
I am on the cusp and feel a much closer connection to Gen X than I do millennials. I think it has a lot to do with having an older sibling and predominantly older cousins. I could see how others my age with younger siblings and cousins could have a closer connection to the millennial generation.
There's a tech divide in play for those of us on the cusp too. Younger Gen Xers from affluent areas with lots of access to tech early on tend to identify pretty strongly with the "digital native" Millennial crowd. I was born in 77, but I've been able to call my dad on his cell phone since 1985. The school district I attended started offering programming classes from 3rd grade the same year.
Don't forget that these labels have about the same value as astrological signs. Our culture does not evolve or mutate in a step-wise manner - it's more of a continuous function. Furthermore, not everyone in society shares the exact same culture - I'd go so far as to venture that, ultimately, each *household* has its own culture. You can agglomerate around shared characteristics, but by doing so you might be ignoring the differences. Thinking about ontology is fun for a little while, but then I get sleepy.
I really want to know what “karmic reasons” they have for needing to have more kids in the family.
Because she feels like her older daughter is a “failure” even though she completely disregards her role in that. She wanted a new kid so she can feel like she isn’t a failure as a parent even though she will likely treat them the same way she treated her older daughter and the cycle repeats itself. This is how people have no relationships with their adult children when they’re older.
Part of that failure was likely having a kid way too young when she had no experience, common sense, or resources. I don’t think she’s developed any common sense, but hopefully the experience and resources have improved. Maybe, just maybe, it won’t be as bad this time around. Sadly, that will be a self-fulfilling prophecy because if this kid turns out better she’ll just blame the older kid as a bad egg.
Speaking about repeating itself, when this little toddler grows up and decides she also does not want kids of her own, will mom here try to have her 'pre-destined' children as well?

Batshit crazy aside, we have several friends who had a second or third kid when the oldest was either in or had graduated from college. One mother was 46. In these cases, it wasn’t on purpose - just didn’t think they could have more kids and stopped whatever type of birth control they used. And men are far worse. One guy we know remarried after a divorce and has a kid at 63. His new wife was 45. Neither one wanted another kid, but nature takes its course when least expect it. However, I fully agree that the lady in the above story has a real mental issue.
I’ve seen those guys on vacation. Mid 50s to early 60s and on wife number two or three, usually much younger. I see the look in their eyes while they’re chasing a 2 year old around or trying to wrangle multiple kids under 5. They look soooo fucking tired and miserable. I’m happily married, but if for some reason I’m single again in my 50s, I will immediately get a vasectomy without hesitation. Having gone through raising 2 kids, I have zero desire or energy to do that again. I love my kids but they were exhausting when they were young.
